Explore every episode of the podcast The Intelligent Machine Guild

In the debut episode of the Intelligent Machine Guild Podcast, we explore a major development shaping the future of robotics and embodied AI: Daniel Theobald’s appointment as Head of Standards Development at MassRobotics. This milestone sets the stage for a deeper conversation about the urgent need for interoperability, governance, and communication standards in a rapidly expanding ecosystem of intelligent machines.

We unpack the rise of physical AI—where software intelligence meets the real world—and examine both its massive economic potential and the risks that come with scaling autonomous systems across industries like logistics, healthcare, agriculture, and retail. With global IoT growth accelerating and predictions that up to 50% of warehouses could become human-optional by 2030, the stakes have never been higher.

Drawing on Theobald’s work, including the development of the MassRobotics Interop Framework (ISO 21423), this episode highlights the push toward a universal “language” for machines—enabling robots from different manufacturers to collaborate seamlessly. We also dive into the mission and rapid rise of the Intelligent Machine Guild (IMG), a Silicon Valley-based network driving innovation through standards, education, and cross-industry collaboration.

Finally, we zoom out to explore the broader transformation underway: how organizations like IMG and MassRobotics are not just supporting startups, but actively reshaping the robotics ecosystem—bridging gaps between academia, industry, and government, and redefining how intelligent machines integrate into society.

This episode sets the foundation for the series, offering both context and vision for the future of robotics—and the people building it.
