Without grassroots artists and underground scenes, there would be no mainstream, or at least no creativity left in it. Lydia Shute is a singer-songwriter based in Liverpool, with whom we have been working for a few years now. She’s gone from strength to strength and is a real example of how to grow as an artist sustainably and effectively.

This week we are using a brilliant track as a jumping off point to talk about a wider type of song: the protest song. Or, if you will, political songs as a whole.

The aforementioned brilliant track is called Dollar, by I Am Roze, an artist originally from Louisiana. Off their latest EP, Social Commentary, Dollar is an evocative, Soul ballad that is a perfect example of how classic protest song techniques and messages are still, possibly even more, relevant today. Although not a genre, a protest song, is a type of songwriting that spans various styles and can even cross boarders between artists and disciplines.

An impromptu week off from the pod has led us back to us nerding out over songs, and this one is another that we use in our songwriting camps. Chris Stapleton’s Either Way is a masterclass in story telling, doing the simple things well and has a grammy winning performance at its core. 

We delve into the lyrics as usual, some of the story behind the creation of this heartbreakingly beautiful track and chat about how instrumentation and harmony can really affect how that song comes across.

After a month off, we’re back with a bonfire classic. Written by Stevie Nicks, Dreams by Fleetwood Mac is unarguably a classic in the Pop/Rock sphere. A US number 1 single from their 1977 album Rumours, it’s easy to forget, or switch off to, the craft and magic that made songs like this, from this era, so iconic.

A new year is often associated with resolutions, new beginnings, looking back on previous successes and planning out the year ahead. This is obviously a refreshing thing that can bring optimism and vitality, but it can also feel daunting and like too much pressure.
