| Between The Lines - Messy by Lola Young | 30 Apr 2025 | 00:49:00 | |
In this debut episode of Between The Lines we’re diving into Messy by Lola Young. You can check out the track here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k-k2_Liofy8 We mainly focus on the lyrics and vocals from this upcoming Pop Pioneer, but also touch on production and structure, including the controversial choice to scrap the MIDDLE EIGHT! When running our songwriting camps we often use our favourite songs as jumping off points to talk about music theory, songwriting as a craft and as inspiration, to show our artists that what they’re engaging with is as accessible to them, as it is to the original artist. So, that’s exactly what we’re doing here! Stay tuned for more songs, alternating with guests, and feel free to send us over any recommendations! This week on the podcast we are joined by a veteran of our recorded chats, Ben Gladwin, and his partner, Ella Clarke, who joins us for the first time. Ella has what we would call “a real job”, as well as having taken up pottery, and we thought this balance was an interesting subject for the pod, as well as a good opportunity to just have a good chinwag. | Episode 1 | 30 Mar 2023 | 00:18:35
Welcome to The Inscape! For those of you who are used to hearing our voices on the Who The Fuck Is Deliah? podcast, then this is going to seem very familiar to you. For any newcomers, here’s a quick brief. We are hear to discuss the music, and general creative, industries from the perspective of those working in it who might not be massive names. Commercial success doesn’t always tell the full story. Without grassroots artists and underground scenes, there would be no mainstream, or at least no creativity left in it. We’ve pivoted from doing this from a band’s perspective, to now doing it from our own music studio/production business, encompassing much more than just stuff that is relative to us as a band. On this weeks episode we talk about mental health in creativity and how important it is to look after it. We touch on burn out, damaging stereotypes and masterclasses that can do more harm than good. This is just a snippet of our whole conversation, so if you would like to find the full episode, please head over to our Patreon and become a subscriber for full length episodes and much more. If not, NO WORRIES, we thank you for listening and hope that you willl engage with us via our social media or by leaving us a review. We sit down together to discuss some breaking, important news from the industry: Spotify and their new royalty model. This could, potentially, be the start of another big shift in music and, although Spotify have been very nonchalant and vague about the whole thing, it could have massive impacts on various levels of the creative industries, including podcasting and audiobooks. We discuss the news in depth, pondering possibilities and you can refer to the articles mentioned below. We also talk about lighter stuff, such as forgetting about fear and competition since getting to Anglesey and how that benefits us creatively and just in our every day life. This week it’s just the two of us, taking stock. We’re getting married this week and it felt like a good time to sit back and reflect on some of the nuances, and glaringly obvious topics, associated with working with your partner, especially in a creative way. Since we have the big day coming up, we haven’t had the bandwidth to get in a guest, as usual, but we didn’t want to leave you empty handed, especially as the reality of working with your partner can be such a deep well to drink from, and can effect many people in many walks of life. We have a fairly rumbly chat about relationship dynamics, money and a few more tangents. Thanks for your support and let us know if you have any questions.

| Sami Fitz | 22 May 2025 | 01:03:36 | |
I like to call her a Neo-Folk artist, even if that may not be a real thing. She fuses ambient music, such as gong baths and meditation inspired drones, with a classic Pop arrangements and Folk melodies, all of which makes for a beautiful and unique sound. A sound that you can hear on her album ‘Some Hills Were Once Islands’, co-produced by us here at The Inscape. You can listen everywhere now or even purchase a vinyl and print to support Sami. She is a mature, insightful artist who lives what David Lynch would call “The Art Life”. She’s as candid as she is romantic about the journey that many of us creatives undergo and offers a great example for many artists to follow. We delve into what it means to be an artist, the creative process and touch on Ralph Wiggum’s heart breaking infant of our eyes. | Between The Lines - The Alien by Manchester Orchestra | 15 May 2025 | 01:02:14
This week, Alex brings the song, and it’s predictably depressing! Andy Hull is the lead songwriter and singer for US band, Manchester Orchestra. He has a knack for distilling the complex into something accessible, simple yet soul crushingly effective. We take a look at that part of his craft, as well as his ability to tell us a s story, regardless of whether it’s something he has experienced himself. This track also doesn’t have a usual chorus, and we look at how to walk that line. Check out the track, and watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71U_qjHLM58

Lydia Shute is a singer-songwriter based in Liverpool, with whom we have been working for a few years now. It’s Alex’s turn to bring the track this week and at a time where world politics are very prescient, he’s taking us back to 2015 for World War Free, a protest/political song by Thabo. It’s Michelle’s turn to bring the track this week and she’s brought in a modern classic. My Mind by Yebba is literally a track that we use in our songwriting camps to show off some of the techniques that we’re teaching and trying to implement. | Between The Lines: Deliah - Habit Special | 27 Nov 2025 | 00:48:34
This week we’re shamelessly plugging our new single, Habit. We did a bit of a production deep dive on our last single, Scorpion, and some of you eagled eyed listeners (as it were) realised that we were yet to do one for Habit, so this one is for you.
We go in to the production of the track more so than the lyrics and melody, because nobody likes hearing people talk about the meaning of their own work, but hopefully you can find some interest and usefulness in how we brought those ideas to life.

| Between The Lines: Jai Paul - BTSTU | 03 Jul 2025 | 00:47:02 | |
We use some of our favourite songs, and submissions from our lovely listenership, as jumping off points to show you our interpretation of the art and craft that has gone in to bringing it to life.
This week we are using a rather unorthodox tracks as a jumping off point to discuss some of the wider topics that this artist’s journey brings up. Jai Paul’s story is one that really captured Michelle’s heart, and she wanted to share it with our listenership. Jai Paul is a British songwriter/producer whose early career exploded, leading to an album leak, a long hiatus and a comeback. This story touches upon what art means to fans, an artist’s ownership over their art, mental health and questions of what could have been.

| Between The Lines: I Am Roze - Dollar | 25 Sep 2025 | 00:49:15 | |
This week we are using a brilliant track as a jumping off point to talk about a wider type of song: the protest song. Or, if you will, political songs as a whole. The aforementioned brilliant track is called Dollar, by I Am Roze, an artist originally from Louisiana. Off their latest EP, Social Commentary, Dollar is an evocative, Soul ballad that is a perfect example of how classic protest song techniques and messages are still, possibly even more, relevant today. Although not a genre, a protest song, is a type of songwriting that spans various styles and can even cross boarders between artists and disciplines. And, let it be said, Nazi Punks...fuck off. | Between The Lines: Justin Bieber - Daisies | 11 Sep 2025 | 00:51:51
After a great week with our guest, Lorenzo, we’re back to discuss Justin Bieber and his new albums, using the single Daisies as our main focus.
It’s generally considered amongst industry folk that if you want to know what’s going on in Pop Music right now, then listen to Justin Bieber’s latest release. And whilst that has seemingly been true for most of his career, is it still the case? | Between The Lines: Chris Stapleton - Either Way | 21 Aug 2025 | 00:53:40
An impromptu week off from the pod has led us back to us nerding out over songs, and this one is another that we use in our songwriting camps. Chris Stapleton’s Either Way is a masterclass in story telling, doing the simple things well and has a grammy winning performance at its core. We delve into the lyrics as usual, some of the story behind the creation of this heartbreakingly beautiful track and chat about how instrumentation and harmony can really affect how that song comes across. | Between The Lines: Fleetwood Mac - Dreams | 07 Aug 2025 | 00:53:06
After a month off, we’re back with a bonfire classic. Written by Stevie Nicks, Dreams by Fleetwood Mac is unarguably a classic in the Pop/Rock sphere. A US number 1 single from their 1977 album Rumours, it’s easy to forget, or switch off to, the craft and magic that made songs like this, from this era, so iconic.
