| 429: Mafia The Old Country, Lego Batman and Battlefield 6 | 26 Aug 2025 | 01:57:26 | |
This week Austin is out for his birthday (happy birthday Austin) but Jason and Brett are here to dig into the games. We start with our first look of Mafia: The Old Country. This game takes us back to 1900's Sicily where the Italian mob got its start. You play Enzo working your way up in the family led by the Don through the hills of beautiful Sicily. The story is great...but does the gameplay follow suit? We also cover all the highlights from Gamescom 2025 particularly our surprise of the new Lego Batman game coming out in 2026. We were shocked to see Lego take us back to Arkham when Rocksteady couldn't. Additionally, we talk about Resident Evil Requiem, Call of Duty Black Ops 7, Silent Hill f, Ghost of Yotei and more. Battlefield 6 had their second open beta weekend and we continue to talk about it. We loved the second weekend but not everyone did. We talk about this, the changes Battlefield Studios will be making and what the road to Battlefield 6 looks like as it prepares for release in October. Lastly, Ubisoft has been quiet this year. After Assassin's Creed: Shadows, not much has released and they didn't even have an Ubisoft Forward. What's going on and what's coming from their studios this year and beyond? | 428: Wildgate, Grounded 2 and Battlefield 6 | 12 Aug 2025 | 01:47:40
In this episode, we review the new game from Dreamhaven (former Blizzard devs) called Wildgate. It's a PvPvE shooter we're having a blast playing. You and 3 other players pilot a shop through The Reach with other ships in the battle with you. Find the artifact and take it through the Wildgate or destroy all the enemy ships. The moment to moment combat is fantastic and there's a lot of variety to gameplay that keeps us coming back for more. Grounded 2 is out in early access. This is Obsidian Entertainment's sequel to the survival "Honey I Shrunk the Kids" style game. Now we're in a big park with better graphics, simpler mechanics and tougher enemies...did we mention buggies? Battlefield 6 is back! The open beta happened last weekend and we played a ton of it. With this new title in the franchise, we have a return to form with the 4 classes, tighter maps, incredible destruction, fantastic sound and several new mechanics that change the game. This is the Battlefield we've been waiting for! Lastly, Brett is bummed with Tony Hawk Pro Skater's 3+4. It doesn't live up to the memories he had as a kid. Is the game bad? Or is our memory simply remembering the best parts of the games we played? Show Notes: Become a part of the conversation! | 419: Assassin's Creed Shadows, Fragpunk and Nintendo Switch 2 | 08 Apr 2025 | 02:54:18
Assassin's Creed Shadows is here! We really enjoyed Valhalla but it was an incredibly long game that had way too much content. The team behind Shadows recognized this and toned it down and brought us a feudal Japan story that is much more focused with an open world that's vast, but managable. The comparisons to Ghost of Tsushima can't be ignored, but this game does manage to find it's own identity. It's not Tsushima by any means but it is a game that brings through a story and a world that feels surprisingly mature for Ubisoft. Is this a new direction for the franchise? We hope so! We also look at a not-so-good experience with Fragpunk. This is a 5v5 hero shooter akin to Valorant which was inspired by Counter-Strike. The main mode is a plant the bomb style of mode and it's fun, but the game is plagued by predatory microtransactions and gambling style mechanics that it takes away from what is otherwise a good game. We also talk extensively about the Nintendo Switch 2 direct. We first discuss the hardware and what all comes with it as well as our feelings toward the price point and the reveals of how much games may cost on the device. We also talk about the games themselves which honestly look amazing. There's a lot of good stuff happening here and if we can stomach the price point of investment, it could be a worthy console to own. Lastly, Dreamhaven is a studio you may not have heard of, but it's made up of some veteran talent including the former Blizzard CEO and co-founder Mike Morhaime. They had a direct showcasing some new games, one being Wildgate that looks really good and we're wondering...will this bring some of the Blizzard magic back? Only time will tell. | 329: Back 4 Blood Beta, Ghost of Tsushima Legends and The State of Microtransactions | 17 Aug 2021 | 01:57:17
We played the open beta for Back 4 Blood, the new game from Turtle Rock Studios. We're excited to see where this game goes but right now it feels like it's missing something. Listen and find out. We also play Nintendo Labo, the part Lego part game that Nintendo brought out in 2018. Brett spent time building some of these cardboard creations and it's surprisingly a blast to build! Unfortunately, we close out with our disappointment in Sea of Thieves. It's not near as good with the new update as we hoped but at least the Adventure mode is still fun. In the news, Blizzard's President has left, Ghost of Tsushima Legends is going standalone and the Epic Games Store was crazy expensive. We also heard some news that South Park is bringing a new game, a series of new seasons and more. In our discussion, we talk about the state of microtransactions. We used to be big against microtransactions but our idea has since shifted over time as they've developed. With the introduction of Battle Passes and clearer purchases, we've found ourselves investing more in them as they bring out more exciting content. However, the question still remains...are these content packs taking away from our original story content? Check out video clips of our news every week over on YouTube. We invite our friend Travis on to talk about Amazon's new MMO New World. It's a brand new MMORPG from Amazon Game Studios and we're surprised at how good it is! We played well over 10 hours each and got a good in-depth look at the gameplay, leveling system, world building and more. In the news we discuss EA Play, the Annapurna Showcase and Ubisoft's new Tom Clancy Game xDefiant. With all the chaos coming out of Blizzard and their sexual harassment suit, we look back at the fall of Blizzard dating back to 2018. A lot has happened and little of it has been good, can they bring themselves back up and survive in the future? Check out video clips of our news every week over on YouTube. Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart has been beat. Both Austin and Brett have completed it and decided to jump into a spoilercast talking about the deeper beats of the story. NOTE: SPOILER WARNING. We do spoil the ending so if you haven't beat it, skip ahead to the news segment. In the news we talk about the reveal of Windows 11. It has integrations with Game Pass even more, Microsoft Teams integration, a clean UI and much more. We also speculate on the fan-favorite coming from EA at EA Play in July and talk about the seasonal story content for Halo Infinite Multiplayer. Our discussion revisits Apple Arcade. It's been quite lately without many new updates and we're wondering if the service will ever see huge success. It seems to be making Apple some money, but we don't hear of any popular titles on the platform and wonder why. Check out video clips of our news every week over on YouTube. Brett jumps into Knockout City with his EA Play Pro pass. This is a new EA Original featuring 3v3 multiplayer dodgeball, 1v1 and more. It's a fun, action-packed multiplayer experience with some simple controls and a lot of depth. Austin also plays Biomutant which we've been looking forward to for a while. Unfortunately, it's not what we expected and may not be worth the suggestion. In the news, we had a ton of new gameplay reveals this week. Horizon Forbidden West, Far Cry 6 and Dying Light 2 releases new footage. We also talk predictions from Microsoft's press conference and Valve working on a portable PC. We invite our friend Julia to join us on the podcast to talk about Yakuza: Like a Dragon and No Man's Sky! Julia has played a ton of No Man's Sky lately and gives us insight into all the new features. She and Brett also talk about the fun they've been having in Yakuza Like a Dragon. In the news, Playstation has a ton of titles coming to the PS5, Grand Theft Auto next-gen is coming and a new survey shows that women hide their gender online due to harassment. Overwatch 2 also reveals a ton of new changes and one of them is a bit controversial. In our discussion topic, we chat with Julia about females in gaming. However, we kick things off with a little game. We look at gaming characters (both male and female) we'd marry, hook up with and kill based on who they are in the games. This is definitely for mature audiences only. We also explore some of the evolution of female representation in the gaming space. Check out video clips of our news every week over on YouTube. | 418: R.E.P.O., Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii and Joseph Neville Interview | 25 Mar 2025 | 02:29:15
You've played Lethal Company. You've played Content Warning. But you haven't yet played a game like R.E.P.O. This game is from a Swedish developer called Semiwork. It's an online, co-op horror game that supports up to 6 players. Find and retrieve objects to satisfy your creator. Use your physics hand to pick up things in the world and deliver them to the extraction zone. This game is a blast to play. With a variety of monsters, procedurally generated levels and hilarious talking robot characters, we're having so much fun playing with friends. We also review Like a Dragon Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii. This is a standalone DLC ultimately for Infinite Wealth. It's a shorter experience with real-time combat and a new seafaring mechanic in ships. The game is good, but not quite as good as expected. Despite its flaws, its still fun to play and be a pirate for awhile in Hawaii. We also talk about Xbox and their new initiative to bring AI to games in the form of CoPilot for Gaming. This is meant to guide you in installing games, finding games to play and ultimately making you a better gamer. It sounds neat but is this too much like training wheels for gamers? Isn't part of the fun discovering how to play the game? Lastly, we have a special guest on the podcast again. This time we have Joseph Neville. He's a Fort Worth-based singer/songwriter who you may have seen playing shows around town. His most recent endeavor is Y2K Prom, a concert event where you get to go back in time to the year 2000, drop your phone at the door and enjoy a bit about what life was like 25 years ago with some amazing live music. His current project is a band Crying in the Car which is a mix of TLC and bands like Good Charlotte. In this conversation, we talking about how he got into music, his influences and a lot about the Switch and why it's a perfect console for casual gamers like himself. | 319: The Falconeer, Scavengers and The Division Heartland | 18 May 2021 | 01:23:51
Austin plays The Falconeer, a game on Xbox Game Pass where you play as a falcon in an aerial combat game. It has an interesting story, voice acting and surprisingly was made by one person! We also jump into Scavengers which is a free-to-play survival battle royale game. It's considered PvPvE with both humans and AI characters. It's got an interesting concept but will it keep us engaged? In the news, we talk about more surrounding the PSVR2 headset which likely will include 4K, eye tracking and more. Sony also reveals some new controller colors. Discord rebrands and brings some new features and Destiny 2's new transmog system requires players to go 25 hours to upgrade one armor set. Insane. Ubisoft has announced their next update for The Division is called Heartland and will be free-to-play. Will this be the right call? it sounds like it could be a spin on Scavengers honestly but we're unsure if it will be a good long-term game or if it will fall flat at the end of the day. | 317: Returnal, New Pokemon Snap and The Future Scale in Multiplayer Games | 04 May 2021 | 01:39:09
Returnal is here from Housemarque Games and Austin jumps into this roguelite game to see what it's all about. It's one of the first next-gen games on the PS5 and it's quite the experience. We also play New Pokemon Snap for the Switch. It brings back a lot of old memories with several new features worth exploring. In the news, Sony is partnering with Discord on a new initiative to bring it to the PlayStation. EA is the first in the industry to win an Oscar and Halo Infinite has some actually significant PC Features coming our way and every Activision studio is working on Call of Duty. Our discussion this week is inspired by a game mode in Scavengers that could support up to 9000 players. This got us thinking about the future scale of multiplayer games. Will we see them get bigger than the standard 64 player? We know 128 is coming to Battlefield and Warzone supports 150. But there are so many other options out there we could experience. Brett dives deeper into Yakuza Like a Dragon. He's having a good time despite the majority of it being cutscenes. We also play the new DLC for Vermintide called Chaos Wastes and play the Apple Arcade game The Oregon Trail. In the news, Warzone has a new map, Sony reverts their decision to get rid of PS Vita and PS3 storefronts and we discuss the potential of a Video Pass for PS Plus subscribers. Overwatch Director Jeff Kaplan is leaving and Discord is no longer being bought out. Our discussion revolves around co-op games. We look at recent games like Avenger's, Outriders and more and look towards what they can do in the future to make us enjoy them more. | 315: Outriders, Assassin's Creed: Valhalla and Epic Games Metaverse | 20 Apr 2021 | 01:31:03
We return to Outriders after they patched the server issues. Things are much better technically but could still use some work. Regardless, the game is a blast to play and the story is getting interesting. People Can Fly definitely delivers in the areas that matter with this game. Brett also finally finishes Assassin's Creed: Valhalla 87 hours later and shares his thoughts on the full campaign experience. In the news, PS5 finally answered our call and fixed a lot of the issues we complained about with the PS5. It doesn't solve anything but at least it's a step in the right direction. Age of Empires 4 finally reveals gameplay with an announcement of 4 full-length campaigns and 8 playable civilizations. Amazon Game Studios also cancels another game with their Lord of the Rings MMO. In our discussion, we explore the future metaverse that Epic Games is betting big on. Tim Sweeney and his team want to build another world interconnected digitally. Think Ready Player One. They got a huge investment with 1 billion dollars and more to come. Will this change our future for the better or worse? Check out video clips of our news every week over on YouTube. | 314: Outriders, Virtual E3 and the Good, Bad and Ugly of the PS5 | 13 Apr 2021 | 01:28:51
We've spent some time with Outriders and tried to wait out on our first impressions for the bug fixes on the servers, but they still exist. This is our first impression of the game after 5-6 hours of time with it. We talk about the gameplay, loot system, story and more from the creators of Bulletstorm. In the news, E3 is going virtual and officially returns this year. Streamer Valkyrae officially becomes the first female co-owner of an eSports team and The Last of Us is supposedly getting remade again. Oh and did we mention a Super Smash Bros. sold for over $600k? Our discussion this week stemmed from Brett wanting to bitch about the PS5. Why? Because it has some major flaws. Underneath the amazing speed, gorgeous design and beautiful graphics is a user interface that leaves much to be desired. From party management to downloading and switching from games, there are a lot of things PlayStation still needs to work on. If you don't have one yet...this may make you happy they are still sold out... Check out video clips of our news every week over on YouTube. Show Notes: Become a part of the conversation! In our news, E3 and San Diego Comic-Con are confirmed not in person, Need for Speed is postponed and Epic Games buys Fall Guys developer Mediatonic. | 308: Outriders, Pokemon Legends and Virtual Reality in 2021 | 02 Mar 2021 | 01:49:12
Outriders is a brand new third-person looter shooter from People Can Fly. They're most known for Bulletstorm but also worked as a support studio for several Gears of War games. This is an ambitious looter shooter in the style of Borderlands meets Diablo where you play with friends through a full scripted story campaign set in the future. There are special abilities for 4 different classes, tons of gear and more. Is it something worth getting in full release? Listen and find out. In our news, we talk about Pokemon's 25th Anniversary and how they revealed Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl coming out as remasters to the 2007 titles. They're also releasing Pokemon Legends: Arceus which is their first-ever entry into the open world. Sony had a big State of Play, Watch Dogs Legions MP is revealed, Call of Duty has an open-world zombie mode and Anthem Next is dead. Our discussion this week is on the future of virtual reality. PSVR2 was announced coming next year but we look to this year and see what is there to look forward to? There aren't any big titles in the pipeline but there is a lot that could be done to really push the medium forward with Oculus Quest 2 and more. | 307: Valheim, Mario Golf: Super Rush and Overwatch 2 | 23 Feb 2021 | 01:32:36
We're back in the addiction that is Valheim this week. We've now opened more biomes, entered new ages and beat more bosses and have some stories to share. This game is insane how good it is for early access and we can't stop talking about it. Viking survival at it's finest. In the news, Nintendo had their first direct in over a year and it was good but lacking a lot of excitement. We got announcements for Mario Golf: Super Rush, Splatoon 3 and a new game from the Octopath team but no news of Breath of the Wild 2 or any other huge surprises. Marvel's Avengers however is getting it's Hawkeye DLC coming soon, so that's fun for at least one of us. In the discussion, we talk about whether or not we still have hype for Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 after the BlizzCon 2021 Online takes place. They released a ton of new details from the PVP modes, the hero missions and the campaign. Is it enough to keep us coming back or does it actually warrant the number "2" at the end of it? It's a deep, procedurally generated world with a done of PvE elements to keep you busy for months to come. We also talk about the cast of The Last of Us TV show, CD Projekt Red having their source code stolen and Post Malone headline a virtual Pokemon Concert for the 25th anniversary. | 305: Destruction: Allstars, Diablo 4 and Most Anticipated Indie Games of 2021 | 09 Feb 2021 | 01:37:54
This month on PS Plus, Destruction: Allstars is free for all PS5 owners. It's a game that was supposed to launch with the console but got delayed due to some complications. This is a destruction derby kind of game where players select a hero and jump into cars to crash into each other and cause a lot of damage. It's a ton of fun for some of us and others aren't enjoying it as much. Does it have enough to keep us coming back? In the news, Gearbox was bought out, Google Stadia closes internal studios and Amazon Game Studios is having some trouble. Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2 also aren't coming out this year. It's a rough year for studios already! Our discussion is on a brighter note as we look at our top 10 most anticipated indie games for 2021. From 12 Minutes to Warhammer: Darktide, we have quite a range of games to discuss with you! What are some of your favorite indie games supposedly releasing this year? | 304: Demon's Souls, Gamestop vs. Reddit and Adam Davis Interview with Game to Grow | 02 Feb 2021 | 02:17:47
This week Austin plays Demon's Souls on the PS5. This is one of two console exclusives that came out at launch. It's from Bluepoint Games and is the remake of the original from From Software. How does it hold up in the modern-day? We also talk about our return to Star Wars: Battlefront 2. In the news, Kevin Hart will play Roland in the new Borderlands film, Bleeding Edge development shuts down and a group in Reddit literally sends Gamestop stock to the moon. Our discussion today is a special one. We invite Adam Davis from Game to Grow back onto the podcast to talk about what they've been up to with their incredible mission for using games in therapeutic ways and help them overcome social anxiety and much more. It's a fantastic cause and they even have a tabletop RPG called Critical Core coming soon! From their website: "Game to Grow is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the use of games of all kinds for therapeutic, educational, and community growth. Our therapeutic social skills groups help youth and adults become more confident, creative, and socially capable through the intentional facilitation of customized, collaborative gaming experiences. We’re most well known for our use of tabletop role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons, though we use many different games in our therapeutic social skills groups. Many of the kids, teens, and adults in our groups struggle with social confidence and building community. Our groups help build social competence, reduce isolation, and form friendships that last. Though a diagnosis isn’t required, commonly supported populations include autism, ADHD, anxiety, depression, and more. We also provide training, consultation, and support to other therapeutic and gaming professionals, educators, parents, and advocates, so that even more individuals can benefit from the life-enriching power of games." | 303: The Last of Us Part 2 (SPOILERS), Resident Evil Village and Deserted Islands | 26 Jan 2021 | 01:45:25
This week we dive deep into The Last of Us Part 2. Brett beat it over the holidays and we wanted to do a spoilercast about why it wasn't our Game of the Year, but also why we think it deserves more credit than it got. It's an incredible game, with a few wrong decisions that resulted in a weaker story than what could've been and gameplay not much improved upon the first game. THERE WILL BE SPOILERS. Skip ahead to 41:37 to skip past the spoilers. In the news, we talk about Battlefield 6 being inspired by Battlefield 3, the new on Resident Evil Village now coming in May and the price hikes from Microsoft. Our discussion this week revolves around deserted islands. We ask the question, what is the one game you would want to play if stuck on a deserted island? We also have some community picks as well. NOTE: Brett says Episode 301, but we actually mean Episode 302! This week Austin picks up Gears Tactics from the Xbox Game Pass. This is one we missed when it dropped last year in April, but he's glad he finally got into it. It's got a lot of XCOM with all the grit of Gears. We also dive into the multiplayer of Star Wars: Squadrons. After several dogfights, some fleet battles and lots of deaths, we have some highs and lows from playing this $40 game from EA. In the news, Nvidia reveals their 3060 card, Bethesda and Machine Games are making a Indiana Jones game and more details drop on the struggles of development with Cyberpunk 2077. Our discussion this week is about Ubisoft's announcement that they're working on an open-world Star Wars game developed by the Ubisoft Massive team. They're best known for the Division series. We made it to 300! Shout out to all the people who have supported us over the last several years. We never thought we'd make it to 300 episodes but here we are. We had a stream playing Among Us with some of the regulars in our Discord and it was a ton of fun! We dive back into Cyberpunk 2077 and talk about what life is like after Act 1, the side quests, some of the cool random encounters, the choice-driven gameplay and much more. Brett also plays the DLC for Marvel's Avengers featuring Kate Bishop. It's a fun, free experience that's well worth diving into if you own the game already. In the news, we talk about all the issues that faced Cyberpunk 2077 during launch week. EA also bought Codemasters for a huge sum of money, Riot Games is making a MMO and Ghost of Tsushima has some new skins coming to Legends. Our discussion is all about the upcoming year which will hopefully be a better year than this one. We look at our top 5 most anticipated games of 2021 as well as some of our honorable mentions. | 290: Baldur's Gate 3, Fall Guys Season 2 and Genre-Defining Games | 13 Oct 2020 | 02:00:21
Larian Studios has finally released Baldur's Gate 3 in Early Access. This features Act 1 of the game in a buggy, yet fun take on Baldur's Gate from the team that brought us Divinity Original Sin 2. It's an incredible start with a ton of nods to Dungeons & Dragons. We also talk about the medieval-themed Fall Guys Season 2 which is a ton of fun with a lot of new cosmetics. In the news, Sucker Punch has unveiled the date for their new co-op, free DLC called Legends. It comes out this Friday! We also talk about the teardown of the PS5 and their awesome cooling system plus the backwards compatibility. Finally, we talk about Crystal Dynamics response to players getting bored of content in Marvel's Avengers. This week our discussion is inspired by a question on the MinnMax podcast about genre-defining games. We ask the question "what are the game or games that got you into a genre you otherwise you wouldn't have played?" We cover everything from CRPG's to Metroidvania games and talk about that one game (or two) that got us to try a genre that we otherwise looked past. | 415: Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Dicefolk and Battlefield 6 | 11 Feb 2025 | 02:01:23
Brett reviews Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. This game has been a struggle as one part of it feels amazing and another part feels like it missed the mark. The game is beautiful, has some great cutscenes, interesting puzzles and worlds to explore but the combat leaves something to be desired. Is it worth buying into it or holding off for something else? We also review Dicefolk, a dice-building roguelike creature game. You control Chimera's in battle, rolling dice to determine your attack and your opponents attacks. Fight through waves of bad guys, level up your party and see how far you can last before dying and starting over. Some analysts predict that GTA6 will be $100 and other game companies will follow suit. Should games be $100? What will make us gamers shell out that higher price? Is it worth games to increase their prices? Veilguard was called a failure by EA. We liked the game but the people of the world did not. What is next for Bioware and can they redeem themselves or is this it? Lastly, we've played some more Delta Force and find it doesn't quite capture the magic that Battlefield does. It's fun and it does a lot of the right things but there's something missing that gives us hope for Battlefield 6 now that they've revealed some more details and launched Battlefield Labs, their early access playtesting program. This week we revisit the past with a special dive into Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2. Vicarious Visions does what they did before with Spyro and Crash Bandicoot by bringing this classic series back the right way this time. It features both 1 and 2 with all the maps we grew up loving. From Warehouse to Roswell, it's all here! In the news, we take a first look at the Oculus Quest 2. Facebook returns not long after with a higher resolution and a lighter formfactor than ever before. We also look at the Night City Wire event for Cyberpunk 2077 showcasing the gangs, districts and more in the game. Monster Hunter Rise is coming to the Switch and Apple Arcade is merging with other subscriptions to create Apple One. In the discussion, PlayStation reveals the pricing and date for the new PlayStation 5. We now have details for both consoles and we explore all that's coming with each. It's an exciting time for next-gen. Xbox has a lower budget $299 console with 1440p gaming at 60FPS. They also have their flagship Series X at $499 with 4K gaming at 60FPS. On the other hand, Playstation 5 has one set of games that can likely push 4K with 60FPS but their differentiator is the disc drive.
