E143: Astrology, Self-Awareness, and Conscious Leadership19 Feb 202600:26:03

Most of us are searching for clarity in a world that feels increasingly uncertain. Not just answers about what to do next, but insight into who we are becoming.

In this episode of The Inner Edge, Janet invites us into a thoughtful and grounded conversation about astrology, not as fortune-telling, but as a powerful tool for self-awareness, meaning, and conscious leadership.

Astrologer Simone Butler joins Janet to explore why ancient wisdom systems like astrology are re-emerging right now, how Carl Jung used astrology in his clinical work, and why understanding our inner patterns can help us make wiser decisions in times of personal and collective change.

This episode is an invitation to stay curious, expand your definition of critical thinking, and reconnect with the deeper intelligence guiding your life.

In this episode:

✅ Why astrology is about self-understanding

✅ Carl Jung’s connection to astrology and the collective unconscious

✅ How unconscious patterns shape most of our behavior

✅ What a birth chart really represents

✅ The role of energy, cycles, and timing in personal growth

✅ Why self-awareness is essential for conscious leadership today

✅ How ancient wisdom supports modern reinvention

✅ Staying open and curious instead of dismissive or fragmented

E142: When Doing More Stops Working12 Feb 202600:09:24

There comes a moment in many leadership journeys when all the behaviors that once drove success—working harder, stepping in faster, proving competence—suddenly stop delivering the same results. You’re still capable. Still committed. Still responsible. And yet, something feels off.

In this episode, Janet explores that often-unspoken turning point and why it’s not a failure, but a call to a deeper kind of leadership.

This conversation is about the inner shift required as leaders move into higher levels of responsibility. Janet unpacks why leadership effectiveness evolves from visible execution to discernment, presence, and judgment, and how learning to pause, sense, and respond intentionally becomes a defining edge.

This is an invitation to outgrow what no longer fits and lead from clarity instead of habit.

In this episode:

✅ Why working harder eventually stops being the answer

✅ The invisible shift from execution to judgment at senior levels

✅ How micromanagement often signals a deeper leadership transition

✅ The power of pausing instead of reacting

✅ Asking “What is needed here?” instead of “What should I do?”

✅ The difference between habitual action and intentional response

✅ How leadership presence deepens through discernment, not control

✅ Why maturity in leadership often feels uncomfortable at first

E133: Accessing Your “Higher Wisdom”11 Dec 202500:19:30

Have you ever noticed that your biggest insights rarely show up when you’re forcing yourself to figure something out? They arrive in the shower, on a walk, in the quiet moments between all the doing. They come when your mind finally slows down enough for something deeper to surface.

In today’s episode of The Inner Edge, Janet explores this “higher wisdom” we all have access to but rarely create space to hear.

Drawing from neuroscience, decades of leadership coaching, and personal stories, Janet reveals why relying solely on rational analysis leaves our decisions incomplete and how integrating intuition, stillness, and embodied awareness leads to truer, more aligned choices.

In a world obsessed with speed and productivity, reconnecting with our inner intelligence is not just helpful, it’s essential.

In this episode:

✅ Why your deepest insights emerge when you stop overthinking

✅ How leaders limit themselves when they rely only on rational analysis

✅ What neuroscience reveals about intuition and the default mode network

✅ How to create stillness to regulate your nervous system and think more clearly

✅ What your body signals before your mind catches up

✅ The power of stepping away to let unconscious processing work for you

E43: Emotional Intelligence, Coaching, & Leadership with Richard Boyatzis30 May 202300:51:00

“When you create relationships where people feel listened to, cared for, a part of something, and they feel like they belong, you're doing something really human. And that's where we unleash our talent.”

In this episode, I talk to Dr. Richard Boyatzis, one of the world's leading experts in leadership development and emotional intelligence.

A senior executive I was working with in 2008 handed out the book “Primal Leadership” to his entire executive leadership team. We then facilitated discussions about emotional intelligence and leadership that greatly impacted leadership expectations and ultimately the culture of the company.

I am thrilled to have one of the co-authors of that book with me today to discuss not only the topic of emotional intelligence, but also leadership development, the importance of emotional intelligence and leadership, and how leaders can help people change through the power of coaching.  We talk about his latest book, “Helping People Change: Coaching With Compassion for Lifelong Learning and Growth” and how trying to “fix” people is a faulty goal. Great leaders are also great coaches, and we discuss how leaders can become better at coaching others.

There are too many gems of wisdom in this episode to describe. If you are seeking to increase your overall leadership effectiveness, you won’t want to miss this episode.
In this episode:

  • Richard’s journey from astronautics to his role today
  • Coaching people to be open to learning and change
  • Good intentions don’t mean effective change
  • Paying attention to the quality of your relationships as a leader
  • The importance of a shared sense of purpose

Power Presence Academy: Practical Wisdom for Leaders is the go-to podcast for anyone who leads. Your host is Janet Ioli, leadership and human development expert, sought-after coach and advisor to global executives, and former executive with experience in four Fortune 100 companies.

Dr. Richard Boyatzis is a best-selling author and one of the world's leading experts in leadership development and emotional intelligence. His nine books include the international best-seller Primal Leadership, which he co-authored with Daniel Goleman and Annie McKee.

He is the Distinguished University Professor and the HR Horvitz Professor of Family Business at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and a Professor in Human Resources at ESADE in Barcelona, one of the top business schools in the world. He has written over 150 articles on leadership, motivation, behavioral change, emotional intelligence, and managerial competencies. His latest research is the analysis of the neuroscience of effective leadership and coaching.

E42: Reinventing Yourself with Joanne Lipman23 May 202300:37:04

“It is all about being open to where your experiences might take you. I think we all have skills that are transferable. And so you need to open your mind.”

Are you seeking to make a career change, but aren’t sure how to proceed?

In this episode, I talk to Joanne Lipman, best-selling author, speaker, and media executive about the process of reinventing yourself.

A theme in my coaching and advising work with executive clients is a secret desire to find more meaning and fulfillment in their lives.  I often hear confessions of inner longings to reinvent their working lives and in some cases, to change careers and do something entirely different. Yet that longing is often accompanied by fear and ultimately, dismissal.

I frequently talk about this often unexpressed search for meaning and the desire to do something different. When I stumbled upon Joanne Lipman's new book Next!: The Power of Reinvention in Life and Work,  I knew I had to invite her to be a guest on the show.  In this episode full of practical advice, we discuss her research and strategies for those who are looking to make a career change and for what is “next”.

In this episode:

  • The 4 steps to reinventing yourself - search, struggle, stop, and solution
  • Common obstacles that cause people to not reinvent themselves
  • The benefits of reaching out to your wider network
  • The secret to reinventing yourself
  • Common myths people believe about reinventing yourself
  • And more!

E41: Leading with Intuition with Julie Hill16 May 202300:51:16

“You have to get the basics, you have to have the tools, but the heart will lead you into places that you can't necessarily explain linearly that will help guide you. It took a long time for me to realize that was okay.”

Julie has a history of firsts. First female CEO of the US operations of a London-based international development, construction, mining, and engineering company. First woman board member for Anthem. And the first woman chair of the University of California at Irvine’s Board of Trustees.
What was most amazing about this interview was that we started out talking about Julie’s wisdom, experience, and advice, which she is full of. What I didn't anticipate was how our conversation evolved and lit up as we moved into talking about synchronicity, intuition, and energy.

E132: Choose Curiosity Over Judgment to Transform How You Lead and Relate04 Dec 202500:14:59

So often in our daily interactions—at work, at home, and even with strangers—we slip into automatic judgment without even noticing it. In this episode of The Inner Edge, Janet invites you to pause before reacting and explore one of the most quietly transformative leadership practices available to all of us: choosing curiosity instead of judgment.

Drawing from her bicultural upbringing in Greece and the United States, Janet shares how being immersed in multiple cultural worlds from a young age shaped her understanding that there is never just one “right” way to see things.

Through warm storytelling and reflective insight, she explores how our socialization, backgrounds, and lived experiences shape the lenses we carry—and how embracing multiple truths can expand our leadership, deepen our relationships, and open pathways for connection in an increasingly divided world.

In this episode:

✅ Why our brains are wired for snap judgments and how to interrupt them

✅ The power of pausing before labeling someone as difficult or wrong

✅ How curiosity reduces conflict and strengthens trust in teams

✅ How disagreements can become opportunities to learn

✅ Why honoring multiple truths expands both personal growth and leadership

✅ A simple challenge to shift one relationship from judgment to curiosity

E31: How To Be a More Objective Leader07 Mar 202300:19:26

“While many of us describe and see ourselves as objective and non-judgmental, the reality is probably closer to the opposite.”

The assumptions and resulting judgments you make about any given person or situation may be fundamentally flawed and you probably don't realize it. This drives you to take leadership actions that are less impactful than you would like and may lead to significant conflict or communication issues.

Why?

The reasoning process we use to make decisions is fundamentally flawed, and in this episode we’ll discuss why.

In this episode, I am going to discuss ways to become a more objective leader. I’ll offer a framework that highlights the flaws in the way we reason, make assumptions, and draw conclusions. I will also share some ways to minimize our natural tendency to jump to conclusions, assumptions, and judgments that may be more subjective than we think.

In this episode:

  • An example of flawed assumptions in action
  • The Ladder of Inference: the 7 steps of our reasoning process
  • How conflict and communication issues can easily arise from this reasoning process
  • Questions to ask yourself to become more objective
  • Why it is important to strive to be more open and curious instead of being right
  • And more!

E30: 5 Tips to Help You Connect And Build Rapport with Your Remote Team28 Feb 202300:21:25

“Becoming more intentional about building rapport and deeper relationships when people are not in front of you takes a bit more thoughtful planning on your part. I'm here to tell you the potential results are worth the effort.”

With the growing acceptance of flexible working outside of the office, leaders have to learn to lead a remote workforce effectively.

As leaders, we traditionally emphasized connecting with teams by walking around or impromptu meetings in the office. These leadership habits work best when you're co-located and in-person. But how can leaders build rapport and connection when all or part of the team is working remotely and they're not all together in the office?

In this episode, I share five practical tips to help you connect and build rapport with your remote team. The fundamentals of connecting with people are essentially the same whether you are in person or not.  With a bit more effort and intention you can become better at building rapport and connection and leading others without being face-to-face.

In this episode:

  • #1 Be more deliberate and intentional about making connections
  • #2 Schedule and conduct regular check-ins with your team
  • #3  Note and acknowledge birthdays, special occasions, and other personal milestones
  • #4 Send weekly emails with updates and personal anecdotes
  • #5 Pay attention, authentically notice and acknowledge what others bring to the table
  • And more!

E27: The Impostor Phenomenon and 3 Strategies to Overcome It 07 Feb 202300:27:54

“Even people at the highest levels of authority and success experience self-doubt, feelings of inadequacy, and feeling like a fraud.”

These feelings can serve as obstacles to grounded self-confidence and continuous learning for many of my executive coaching clients. These feelings and thoughts often show up as flickering internal power outages where insecurity, questioning your own worthiness to be in a role, and fear of looking incompetent, run rampant inside your own head.  I hear about these feelings and ruminating thoughts from powerful, confident people every single day in my one-on-one coaching and advising work. I have noticed that they tend to run most rampant when a leader moves into a new role or starts something new. I too am not exempt– I have experienced these feelings myself.

Today’s episode is all about this “impostor phenomenon”.

We often hear the term “impostor syndrome” describing these feelings, and we use this terminology like a pop culture word without really understanding it. Today we’ll clarify what it is,  give you the information you need to assess if this is something you’re experiencing and provide you with 3 strategies to help you overcome it.

In this episode:

  • What is the impostor phenomenon?
  • The ways the impostor phenomenon can show up
  • The origin of the Impostor Phenomenon
  • Debunking the female impostor myth (HINT: It’s not unique to women)
  • 3 strategies to conquer your negative self-talk and feelings of inadequacy
  • And more!

E131: Leadership Lessons from the Special Somebodies We’ve Lost27 Nov 202500:18:45

What can the people we’ve lost teach us about who we become? And how do their everyday choices—often unnoticed in the moment—shape our leadership, our values, and the way we show up in the world?

In this heartfelt conversation, Ian Ziskin returns to The Inner Edge to share the deeply personal journey that inspired his new collaborative book, Lives Lost and Leadership Found: Lessons from Special Somebodies. After losing both his brother and his mother only months apart, Ian began reflecting on the lessons they left behind.

As we talk, you’ll likely find your own “special somebodies” coming to mind—the people who shaped you, guided you, or quietly modeled who you wanted to become. Some may be gone. Some may still be here. And all of them leave imprints that matter.

This episode is a warm, reflective invitation to pause, honor, and acknowledge the leadership lessons that come from everyday human beings—not just from CEOs or experts, but from the people who taught us through the way they lived.

In this episode:

✅ How the loss of loved ones sparked Ian’s collaborative book project

✅ Why facing reality is essential for personal and organizational growth

✅ How advocacy, values, and “showing you care” become quiet but powerful forms of leadership

✅ Why the people who shaped us often never knew the impact they had

✅ The cathartic process of writing about a special somebody

✅ How to reflect on your own life lessons and why you should share them with the people who matter now

E23: The Authenticity Trap: How to Really Become a More Authentic Leader10 Jan 202300:26:31

“If the word authentic means being the real you, who are you?”

While many of us have the noble intention of being authentic, I'm not so sure we really know what it means to be our authentic selves.  There's a lot more work that we need to do if we indeed want to be more authentic.

In this episode, I talk about authenticity and what it means to be an authentic leader.  I provoke you to think about what I call the authenticity trap and direct you to some resources and questions that can help you start to figure out who your authentic self really is.

In this episode:

  • The trap we fall into when we use the word authentic
  • A definition of Authentic Leadership and what it means for leaders
  • How our upbringing and cultural conditioning shape who we are
  • What we need to do to get closer to being authentic
  • The importance of pausing and choosing your responses
  • Some questions to help you start thinking about who you authentically are as a person and as a leader
  • And more!

Noteworthy Quotes from This Episode

“I can be a more authentic leader, but not an authentic leader, who [...] is just being me [and] just saying whatever comes to my mind, but is actually really much more intentional about my choices. And I'm more the person I've created myself to be versus a product of my upbringing and my emotional wiring.”

“Authentic Leadership is not just being whoever you think you are. But it also includes a series of traits that include connecting with other people.”

“If we are looking for more authentic connection, then we've got to do some deeper work on ourselves to become more grounded and to become more secure in who we are, what we stand for, and how we interact and connect with others.”

“In my view, the challenge for us in 2023 is not “how do I be more authentic?”.  It's really, “how do I create a more authentic version of myself?”

Noteworthy Quotes from This Episode

“There have been moments where I've had to look at myself and say: ‘you know what? I'm not even sure what my authentic self is, because I've been trying to fit this particular mold and trying to be this particular thing, because that's what society says I should do, or how I should act.”

“It's too much work to try to be someone else or to try to fit into a mold. I've just learned, and I'm seeing that the more authentic I am, the more authentic I see other people. I think that's a better formula for success.”

“In my opinion, there's no reason why extraordinarily competent women, experienced women, accomplished women, should walk around feeling as if they don't belong.”

“I think that the roles that we are in as leaders are just conduits for bigger things for us to have an impact on the world, or even to what our true purpose is in life.”

In this deeply personal solo episode, Janet shares a childhood story that shaped her lifelong perspective on inclusion, empathy, and what it really means to lead with humanity.

✅ How neuroscience explains our instinctive reactions to “otherness”

Noteworthy Quotes from This Episode

“Leadership skills are not something that you're born with. You really have to learn and grow into that field.”

“It's really about knowing yourself and your own strengths, your own weaknesses, your values, and your beliefs. That's really foundational into becoming a strong leader. Because if you can't understand yourself and what you're good at, it's really hard to serve others.”

“I think some of my best advice is, you know, really, just to be yourself, don't try to be one of the men, it's okay to be different than your male counterparts. And honestly, that's the value that you bring to the table because what makes you different is really what sets you apart from the rest of the team.”

“Your brand has got to be something that's authentic to you.”

“Have fun. Life is too short to be in a career that doesn't energize you or jazz you every day or to work with people that don't respect you [...] life is really too short. You spend too many waking hours working. That should be fun. And if it's not, find something else.”

E12: Leadership Presence Starts With Being Fully Present Everywhere You Are09 Aug 202200:13:05

Do you aspire to be more fully present, but find it a challenge to actually do so?

You may try your best to be a better listener, but find yourself talking to someone in your office distractedly thinking about the next meeting on your calendar. You may even acknowledge the person with the words, “I'm listening” as you continue to type on your computer. You divide your attention and half-participate in meetings or events while you think about your to-do list. You look down at your phone while having a meal. And the list goes on…

We tend to take pride in multitasking, yet the problem is… We are never fully present where we are in each moment.  And this distraction prevents us from fully experiencing anything.  It also causes us to miss so much.

What are you missing when you're scattered, distracted, and never fully present?

In this episode, I talk about the power of being fully present and share:

  • The true meaning of being fully present
  • A real-life example of how not being present can affect your effectiveness as a leader and as a human being
  • A mantra to use to reground yourself to the present moment when you find yourself becoming distracted

Noteworthy Quotes from This Episode

“Some of us wear it as a badge of honor that we're able to do all these different things and multitask [...].”

“You are the embodiment of every single interaction you're having.”

“We talk about having a powerful leadership presence but… It's not about how you stand. It's not about how you look. It's about how you are and how you're being with others.”

“The reality is that you're providing an experience of what it's like to be in your presence to others every single moment.  In every single interaction.”

“Companies who want to be relevant need to pay closer attention to women as direct consumers of goods and services.”

“50/50 Women on Boards also has training programs with different levels of readiness that can provide you with the initial steps of finding out what being on a board is about and where you fit."

“Network. Network. Network. Your personal network will serve you well in your search. Just like with your other jobs, especially for your first board position, the more people who know that you are interested in serving on a board, the greater your chances are of getting there.”

“Finding your first board position is like looking for a high-level job. It takes the same discipline, planning, systematic approach, and a whole lot of networking.”

“Regardless of where you are in your life, taking on any additional roles will require the mindset and the honesty to ask yourself these three important questions. Is this really what I want? Is this the right time for me? Will my family support my choice?”

“How many times in your lifetime will you have the opportunity to be part of history in the making? Why not be part of the change?”

E8: Didn't Get the Big Promotion? How to Rebound Gracefully14 Jun 202200:18:51

You've paid your dues and you've worked grueling 60-hour weeks. You have all the skills and qualifications for the next level job you were up for but you still didn’t get that promotion.

This unexpected disappointment happens to many of us sometime in our careers.  When it does, you may feel angry and betrayed. Understandably, your immediate gut reaction might be to polish your resume and start looking for a new job where you feel appreciated and valued.

As a coach to executives, I’ve seen this script play out more times than I can count.

What I know for sure is that how you behave immediately following such a blow is critical.   Others are watching your reaction and that reaction creates a story about your resilience as a leader and how you handle setbacks.  Your reputation and personal leadership brand are not only created by how you act when you feel in control or succeed but also when you experience failure.

In this episode, I’ll share 4 steps to rebound gracefully and move on after not getting that promotion you expected.

In this episode I’ll talk candidly about:

  • Why the way you react to not getting the promotion you feel you deserved says a lot about who you are as a leader
  • 4 steps to rebound gracefully after not getting the promotion you’ve been preparing for
  • My perspective as an executive coach about what to think about as you move forward

Power Presence Academy: Practical Wisdom for Leaders is the go-to podcast for anyone who leads. Your host is Janet Ioli, a leadership and human development expert, sought-after coach and advisor to global executives, and former executive .

Noteworthy Quotes from this episode
“How you act when you don't get the job is just as important as how you act as a leader day in and day out."
“Moving on: Express your disappointment. solicit feedback, and pledge support.”
“Think about the disappointment like a wave. The key is to feel it, acknowledge it, process it, recover from it, and then start swimming forward - not to just wallow in it.”
“Were you so attached to the thought of this promotion that you lost sight of its real importance in the bigger scheme of things?”
“You are not defined by a job title or a job, period.”
“Rebounding with grace takes you out of the victim role. It empowers you to move on. And it also creates new possibilities for the future that you may have not considered.”

E2: What To Ask Yourself NOW to Create Real Change in The Way You Lead22 Mar 202200:15:04

I had a leadership interview ready to post for this episode of Power Presence Academy. Instead, I decided to use the episode to offer you a leadership challenge.

In light of everything that's going on right now in Russia and Ukraine, I think it's time to pause, step back, and have a different type of conversation. A somber, reflective one.

I wanted to share some of my thoughts about what I see as our presenting leadership challenge and a turning point in these unsettling times. If we want to create a different leadership story in an organization, how we lead has to be different.

Join me in this episode not for the usual tips or advice, but for deeper self-reflection.

In this episode, I’ll share:

  • The question I believe we as leaders need to ask ourselves now to create real change in how we lead
  • A challenge to make one change in how you show up as a leader

Power Presence Academy: Practical Wisdom for Leaders is the go-to podcast for anyone who leads. Your host is Janet Ioli, a leadership and human development expert, sought-after coach and advisor to global executives, and former executive with experience in four Fortune 100 companies.

Noteworthy Quotes from this episode

“Now more than ever, I think we're being called to step up and lead.”

“The reality is we want to change, we want things to be better. We all want that. We're all trying the best we can and despite our best intentions, I think ‘What do I do?’ is the wrong question we're asking.”

“What if the question we should really be asking ourselves isn’t about doing at all? And the question is, what type of leader do I need to be in these times?”

“What we think, say, and do, and how we make people feel every moment as a leader has an enormous impact on everything and everyone around us.”

“We want to be loved. We want to be seen as good and worthy. And we want to feel safe. So, that creates reactive impulses. And those impulses are, I want to please people, I want to please the organization, I want to prove my worthiness, I want to protect myself from criticism and rejection.”

“This fear of not measuring up puts us in this reactive place of pleasing, pushing, protecting, and doing whatever is necessary to meet these external standards of approval and success.”

“Leadership involves intentionally creating the future, not just reacting to our present circumstances to get by.“

“I really believe that change starts with each one of us making the decision to create the positive future we envision rather than just reacting to the circumstances around us, and that starts with our choices every single moment.”
