Yeah, But That's Not Improv, Is It?21 Nov 202300:21:05

Reaching Your Peak In Improv07 Nov 202300:16:28

Why is it that some improvisers avoid playing with an older improviser, or when they do get to play with them, they make them their grandparents? Given some of the most famous, gifted improvisers who sell out shows are over the age of 60, why do peculiar attitudes around age still exist in our art form?

When Should You Walk Into A Scene? 26 Sep 202300:16:40

Whether you are an improviser who hesitates to walk on, or someone who just can’t resist entering a scene, you know a walk-on has the power to change what is happening on stage.

Marcel Blanch-de Wilt is a Sydney-based improviser and he believes there is never a bad time to enter an improv scene. He encourages new improvisers to jump in and have fun. While others argue there are times when entering a scene may disrupt the flow or emotion, Marcel believes overthinking leads to hesitation.

This episode you also hear from Sam Irving and Vera Chok who take slightly divergent views on the how and when of a walk-on in improvised scenes.

That First Show Back13 Jul 202100:17:58

Slowly, gradually, in some parts of the world, live shows are coming back. For some performers it’s their first shows back in front of a live audience in 16 months. That sort of gap between shows is something many improvisers never thought they’d have to face and it’s meant a whole big mix of emotions.

Exploring The Game Of The Scene 06 Apr 202100:20:11

The Game Of The Scene is one of the more debated improv concepts. Part of that debate has simply focused on defining what we mean by ‘the game of the scene’ and part of the debate has been about its usefulness or necessity. This episode we explore definitions of Game and hear from those who use this tool and those who don’t.

Short-form Improv Takes Centre Stage Online12 Jan 202100:18:54

It's nearly ten months since most live improv shows around the world paused. Some improvisers have taken their short form shows online and adapted them, other improvisers have decided to move from long form to short form as they feel it suits the medium. Is short-form better suited to our new online improv world?

Object work - is it just a necessary evil or is the creation and continuity of imaginary objects in scenes vital. What power does object work have when it comes to affecting us, our scene partners and our audiences and where does it fit in the hierarchy of improv techniques and tools?

Life Skills Becoming Improv Skills03 Nov 202000:21:15

Many people advise that to be a good improviser, you need to have an interesting life… so what are the things have people done, what hobbies have they taken up or professions have they worked in or life habits they’ve taken on - that have helped them in their improv.

Scene Hog? Ensuring Everyone Gets Their Moment to Shine23 Apr 202400:16:43

What happens when one artist takes up too much space? This episode, Lloydie dives into the delicate dance of sharing the spotlight.

We hear from Swedish improviser Hjalmar Hardestam who reflects on the fine line between supporting scenes and steamrolling them. As he recounts his experiences from the Robin Hood International Improv Festival, we're offered a glimpse into the self-awareness required to balance personal drive with ensemble harmony.

We also meet Autumn Unwin, who candidly shares her journey from a newbie to a seasoned improviser with a passion for inclusivity. Both guests explore the nuances of stage dynamics, from the pitfalls of hogging the limelight to the challenges of coaxing reluctant performers into joining the fun on stage.

Status - some schools of thought talk about status in improv a lot - but what do we mean when we ask someone to play high or low status and how much do we need it to build characters and on stage dynamics?

Will Podcasts Help Save Improv?05 May 202000:19:43

In the past couple of episodes you’ve heard from people who have moved their improv online using Zoom - all the improv that you’ve heard covered in this podcast has been visually led. But what about podcasts? Unlike Zoom, improv in podcast form was here before Covid-19 led to the doors shutting on improv theatres and performance spaces. Given the medium already existed as a home for improv, what does it have to offer?

Moving Improv Online Part Two21 Apr 202000:17:31

In the second part of this series on online improv, we re-visit some of the voices you heard last episode - improv practitioners who have taken their work onto visual online platforms like Zoom in order to still teach and perform. As the global improv community continues to wrestle with its current inability to do in-person public performances, we hear about the discoveries, the moments of joy and the future of online improv. Will something that has become necessary may end up leading our art form somewhere new?
