Johnny Dee Returns To Grill The Imbalanced Brothers Like Salmon!02 Sep 202400:50:54
Back in May 2024, in Episode #351, Doro/Tyketto drummer Johnny Dee, our old friend from his Philly days, made the Conshohocken-Frankfurt Connection. During that chat he confided that he, as a listener to the podcast, had questions. This week, he's back with those queries, and more, apparently. This has never happened on this podcast before, so it's exciting to hear what happens! Yo, Johnny! Yer up! Catch this and any older episode on our web site, right here!!! First Flights: The Jefferson Airplane!26 Aug 202401:00:24
Born of psychedelia (when "it" was still good) and the S.F. scene of the mid-1960s, the Imbalanced Boys dig into the formation and early ways of this R&RHOF (class of 1996) band this week! 2400 Fulton Street, their mansion's address, was Golden Gate Park-adjacent, and a short walk to the Grateful Dead's house "in the Haight." In the early daze of the scene, things were "still coming together." Later, Marty, Grace, Jorma, Paul, Jack & Spencer would rock the universe! In that atmosphere Blind Thomas Jefferson Airplane formed and took flight. Prime flying time, festival glory, plus years of commercial success can't prevent major changes, as the story unfolds. Catch the tale in this week's episode, plus some really groooovy tunes! All of our episodes are available where you get podcasts AND on our web site! Learn more about your ad choices. Too Much Too Young: The 2-Tone Records Story24 Jun 202400:50:21
Before our July Summer vacation, a really great talk with author Daniel Rachel (Like Some Forgotten Dream, Don't Look Back In Anger, Walls Come Tumbling Down) to discuss his latest book, Too Much Too Young: The 2-Tone Records Story! The music of Ska was the next big thing in London, and in Coventry, where many of the bands percolated in a vacuum. They were less effected by outside trends, and created their own thing. It's about the way Ska music, back to the early artists of Jamaica, makes you feel! The way it moves you! Daniel and the guys delve into that and what fueled the black & white-checkered trend of the Brits who adopted this music as their own! The Americans got into the act, too, as both Ray and Markus indicate in this episode. If you don't know much about Ska, dig in and start to learn right here! Albums Turning Fifty In 2023!27 Mar 202301:06:09
1973 was one helluva year! Behind the good, the bad AND the ugly of the world, there was music, an incredible motherlode of creativity exploding from all genres, changing our musical culture. Markus and Ray hop in the Imbalanced Time Machine to help paint the picture of their experiences that year. That includes a deep dive into the rabbit hole as they run down the full list of albums released in '73. The music frames the whole episode, and will evoke some strong memories! This is a recurring exercise, and given the impact of 1971 and 1972, can you expect '73 to be any less a part of your life experience? Riot Grrrl! Punk's Feminist Revolution!20 Mar 202300:37:46
In reaction to poor treatment in the scene, the Riot Grrrl! movement started with Bikini KIll's Kathleen Hanna's manifesto. Taking the form of a band pamphlet, it spawned a sub-genre in the Punk world, and gave voice to women who liked to kick ass on stage! Markus and Ray dig into the bands, the fans, and this new branch of politics. The long-unsolved murder of Mia Zapata of The Gits only underlined the need for Grrrls to unite! The music was punky, and raw. The politics struck a chord, spawned a better outlook on Rock/Punk made by women, and inspired other bands. We love our sponsors!!! Game Changers: Songs In The Key Of Life13 Mar 202300:45:47
You could say that everything he'd done prior to 1976's Songs In The Key Of Life was leading up to the musical cornucopia that became this landmark double album! The Imbalanced Brothers both hold this record, and Stevie Wonder, in the highest regard, and it shows in their dissection of the songs and the players who helped fulfill this musical vision! Profiles In The Blues: Memphis Minnie & Blind Lemon Jefferson06 Mar 202300:46:00
A progenitor is a person without whom the path of the topic being discussed might be very different. That's the case with Memphis Minnie (not her real name), and Blind Lemon Jefferson (his real name) both of whom laid foundation stones for so much of what Rock & Roll drew upon when it came around. Starting in the 1890s, we follow both artists and their path of influence on future players! Both were superstars in their time, creating the pathways for those to come, some of which are part of our story this week. We love our sponsors!!! The Midnight Special At 50!27 Feb 202300:48:39
Starting with the vision of Burt Sugarman, the Imbalanced Boys discuss the first late, late night TV show, which also happened to be groundbreaking in its presentation of live music! Thanks to the show's uncredited documentarians, we get the word on how it got started from Burt himself. We'll dig into the music, the artists, and of course, the great Wolfman Jack! What might be hard to get your head around is the idea of 1970's TV, and how it all went to a test pattern, after The Tonight Show! Groundbreaking not only in that regard, but in the way that television presented live music to its viewers! The guys say that if they did this episode once a month, it'd be different every time! From his family roots to his dual career paths, taken simultaneously, Markus and Ray take the ride with you, musically, and historically! From London to L.A., we talk about his musical life, and all the twists and turns it took. Due to the risk of a 2+ hourlong episode, much of Rod Stewart's personal story is pretty much left out. So, it's football and booze, and The Faces, and an amazing solo career that recently marked 55 years! Berry & Smokey! MusiCares Persons Of The Year!28 Jan 202300:42:05
Berry may have given Smokey his start in the business, but since they met they've been best friends, their lives and fates interwoven through the decades. From the early days of the Motown Era, Hitsville's prime in Detroit, the artists, the music, the writers, working together...what a life!!! The changes inside the music, and the move to L.A. are all discussed. Through everything life can throw at you over 60+ years, they've lived with kindness and a clear view of the bigger picture. All You Need Is Love, A Candid Conversation With Author Steven Gaines10 Jun 202401:02:49
Sometimes when you do interviews, the discussion expands beyond the movie or book the subject came to promote. That's what happened when Markus & Ray talked with author Steven Gaines. But Gaines isn't just any Rock author, having been Alice Cooper's biographer & regular golf partner, writing books and penning columns, and interviewing all of The Beatles for his book, The Love You Make. All You Need Is Love, his new book, builds a POV telling of the tale, introducing new information and perspective. Gaines also shares many previously unknown details about his experiences interviewing Fabs. He also tells his own story in the midst of it (next book, Steve?). All are reasons for reading this book. As Steven details his experience with Philadelphia, our hometown, his interaction with local TV icon Gene London comes into play. One of a ton of great tales about the writing of the book inside our interview! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Electric Light Orchestra...In The Beginning16 Jan 202300:46:40
As often happens when the Imbalanced Brothers dig into a topic, they experienced wonder and discovery, only one of which is an ELO album title! Sure, they're both huge fans, sure they listened to Electric Light Orchestra a lot, but there's always a story inside the story that surprises, or even amazes. In this case, the reminder of just how great their music was, is part of the experience. The soundtrack for this episode is extra lush! We love our sponsors!!! Back To The Shoals; a Coda to our previous visit!09 Jan 202300:40:23
Time to get "Back To The Shoals," as in Muscle Shoals, one of the most fertile musical regions of the U.S., especially in the '60s and '70s, but even through the decades since. So many great sessions becoming an amazing list of incredible records for one studio! In this episode, Markus says that maybe the boys should do a series of episodes about this amazing musical place where the feels come from the mud! This return underlines the need to do more episodes about this amazing place!  So, kick back and enjoy a little more from The Shoals! We love our sponsors!!! To Those We've Lost In 202219 Dec 202200:50:49
This is a deep look at the creative forces that have left the world in the past year. We've included figures from all sorts of creative pursuits! Whether aged and iconic, after long illness or suddenly shocking, we feel the loss of those with whom we've shared something. In this case...it's music, something so integral to our lives.  2022 not only continued a dreary trend that we noticed a few years back, this year took it an unreal level. This is also an exercise in remembering what we had in those who've died. Their spirit and their music... So grab some Kleenex, and join us for as inclusive a memoriam as we can compose... Hangin' With Dave & Kenny!12 Dec 202201:01:28
So much has changed since David Uosikkinen & Kenny Aaronson were guests on the podcast, separately back in 2019!  Their musical friendship has grown, even during the pandemic. We talk about each of their own activities (The Hooters for David, and The Yardbirds for Kenny), and, no spoilers, but Ken uncorks a fun surprise, amidst his stories. We get an update on In The Pocket, Dave's Philly-centric collective, with the latest news on that project. Plus, they both discuss their involvement in the Lest We Forget recorded tribute organization, and their part in honoring Charlie Watts! But the episode starts with, and centers around, the recent passing of Robert Gordon, and what he meant to both of them. If you're a fan, it can help serve as a bit of grieving. Just remember, they knew him well... So, get set for a fun, high-paced listen with 4 friends "in the quad!" Oldest Artists Still At It!!!03 Jun 202400:33:00
Someone had the idea to start a meme, in tribute if you will, to the elders. All genres, all artists, all that matters! Healthy discussions (lookin' at you, Facebook friends!) are a good thing, but try to be kind! What's cool is the variety of amazing artists, well past full retirement age, who've decided that playing on the back porch is "for old folks!" So they go on: recording albums, playing live tours, recording albums of live tours, and more! Soooo, The Imbalanced Boys SALUTE them all in this week's episode. There are a few fun realizations along the way... Have someone you think should have been included, email us at: imbalancedhistory@gmail.com Find all of our episodes on our web site! Redux: The Night John Lennon Died05 Dec 202200:23:50
John meant the world, to most people, and definitely to all of us. His music, his message, and his fun way of spreading it, attracted so many to him. One wicked soul saw things differently than most. He took John's life on 12/8/80... Forgiveness is a virtue, but forgive us for being less than virtuous in our disdain for this man, may he rot for eternity when his life ends. For us, the living, we have found ways to move forward for decades now. This episode can help those who still mourn... Markus and Ray had two very different evenings on December 8th, 1980. Thin Lizzy: Romeo vs. Johnny The Fox!28 Nov 202200:47:52
Thin Lizzy's Phil Lynott, and his friend, and cohort, Gary Moore worked together from their youth, on and off. They recorded in a band called Skid Row, and would associate through the decades, until Phil's death in 1986 at age 36. That included stints in Thin Lizzy, the band Phil led, which we explore this week. Their songs had their own legend, and broke them worldwide, but it was the live shows that sealed their reputation, badass as it was. Markus and Ray try to detail as much as possible about the formation and evolution of Thin Lizzy, and the varied factors that worked for, and against, the band. Hope you find some good stuff in this one. Music, history, or something else... We love our sponsors!!! Island Music: The History Of AIR Studios Montserrat with Brian Sallerson21 Nov 202201:00:26
Author Brian Sallerson leads Ray and Markus through the path he took to writing his first book, Island Music: The History Of AIR Studios Montserrat, an essential history of an important recording environment in paradise! A unique jewel in its time, AIR Montserrat, built and run by Sir George Martin, as part of the era of destination studios, has fascinated many, including Markus and Ray. How and why Brian came to the project via an epiphany of sorts is discussed, and he explains how he went from looking into Martin's Caribbean recording oasis to visiting it in its current state. Beyond the glitz and glamour, he found the deeper stories of the studio; it's equipment and construction challenges, and most importantly, the people.  Whether they worked at the studio or not, the people of the island made every artist's journey a better experience. Brian also explains how the island and its people became the main character of his book.  Find Brian's book in whichever format you need, using the links below: Color paperback: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BGNCDKSQ?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_S7986K4ZBP6J3HJXA1JM Black & white paperback: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BGNDTM9N?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_1FCHT93VDTXJC4YHH7SP Kindle: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BGJMJPT9?ref_=cm_sw_r_cp_ud_dp_B2D97E64M189VWP0Q43F We suggest that you also visit Brian's web site for more on him, and his amazing adventure! Gregor Gall is well-known and respected for his written work, his views on geopolitics, and he happens to be a huge fan of The Clash. He separated his fandom from this look into the effects of Strummer's politics, and informs us of some of Joe's late-in-life changed points of view.  The underlying theme is the music, which was Joe's (and the band's) way of speaking out. Inside his left-leaning views you can feel Gall's incredible admiration for Strummer. He informs deeply on the many facets of Joe and his life, which our previous episodes about "the only band that matters" could not.  We highly recommend his book, the punk rock politics of Joe Strummer! Also available at other outlets (just don't go to the "A place"!) The Magic Of Muscle Shoals17 Oct 202200:55:14
From the Tennessee River mud that flows through The Shoals, to the studios, to the records, and the world, helped to forge that Muscle Shoals Sound, created by The Swampers. They were rural Alabama's answer to The Wrecking Crew and became bigger than most big city studio players, achieving so much, without leaving home. Well, there were a few trips to record in places like New York, and opening for The Beatles, when the situation required it. Those will be discussed, as well as the growth of a recording empire that was truly unique.  From Rick Hall and Fame Studios forming, to the Swampers getting their nickname, their own place, and making amazing records, Markus & Ray wade through it all, and deliver a Shotgun 5 Faves of this amazing music! Genesis To Exodus: The Gabriel Era10 Oct 202200:39:16
Artists making music without rules or limits set the tone for the advent of the Progressive Rock era! Genesis didn't set the world on fire at the start (not unlike other progressive pioneers), but their influence grew and changed through their early phase, even after Peter's solo departure. Like some of their contemporaries, the lineup that made the band's mark isn't the one they start out with.  The Imbalanced Boys dig into that aspect, among other things related to the days from inception through Peter Gabriel's answering of his solo calling. Hopefully it will inform newer fans of this band, and set the table for what's next in their amazing history. Intersection: Traffic & Blind Faith20 May 202400:37:52
When Markus told Ray about his love of Traffic, it sparked a conversation that spills into this episode. Proving we all have our own path, Markus notes When The Eagle Flies as his favorite, while Ray prefers Low Spark... That led to discussion of Blind Faith, a 1969 side project, which the Boys discuss as well. It's a different-angle perspective and an exploration of an amazing musical trek that draws in a number interesting characters beyond the core characters! 5 Favorites: First Ten Concerts12 Sep 202200:39:38
Two guys in different phases of life, half a continent apart, experiencing music in a parallel manner is just one of the oddities inside this episode of the podcast. Musically, it's a wild all-over-the-road van ride with friends to a festival! The mission to recall their first ten concerts was challenge enough for the Imbalanced Ones, but aligning them in an episode of 5 Faves? Well, the results are right here! There's so much to tell about those early days of Metallica! Markus and Ray dig into the tunes, the tones, and the surrounding history at the time of the album. They also discuss Jon and Marsha Zazula, Megaforce co-founders, who were also one of the greatest couples in Metal music! Birthday Twins: Rob Halford & Bob Mayo22 Aug 202200:27:47
The Imbalanced Brothers discuss the arrival of two players in Rock history on the same day: August 25, 1951, making them Birthday Twins! Judas Priest singer Rob Halford (aka The Metal God), born in the UK, and keyboard wizard Bob Mayo (aka "Mr. Bob Mayo, Bob Mayo please,") born in New York City, each took different paths along their way to Rock & Roll! But they started on the same day, an ocean apart! Halford breaks out as lead singer in a groundbreaking Metal band, while Mayo "comes alive" in Peter Frampton's band. Two different figures sharing the same date of origin. A bit sad to remember because of Bob's passing , too young, in 2004. Let's rock with Rob and Bob! #BornIn51! Albums Turning Fifty In 2022!18 Jul 202200:46:30
The only task more daunting in recent memory than this week's expedition to 1972, is LAST year's trip back to 1971, and that year's massive release of music! Some of the names are the same, but many are new, or renewed. More bands, still bound to the old school record label release schedules, make two appearances in '72. Other years would continue to make major impact, but 1971/1972 back-to-back? Tough to top! So, strap into The Imbalanced Time Machine, and let's go!!! The Rolling Stones' Unholy Trio11 Jul 202200:53:54
Coming out of 1967, The Rolling Stones were about to turn the corner on their career and become the band they were meant to be. Their next three albums: Beggar's Banquet, Let It Bleed and Sticky Fingers saw their evolution hit overdrive, marked the band's departure from Decca/London Records, and sparked their long-time association with Atlantic Records via their own Rolling Stones Records label! This is also the part of their journey where founding member Brian Jones departs, and then dies suddenly. This episode delves into that chapter, and shows the band emerging on the other side. Rarely does a band, already established, rip off a series of three albums this good, in the middle of their career. Enjoy the ride! Bob Marley & The Wailers: Kingston To The World27 Jun 202200:57:57
Realizing fully that any exploration of Bob Marley & The Wailers is bound to be woefully incomplete, Markus and Ray undertook this musical journey with love and a keen interest to learn, and share... The story of Bob, Peter, Bunny, and Junior Braithwaite, whom the guys refer to as "the lost Wailer" is an amazing story in music history.
