| Your Internal Baseline | 10 Nov 2025 | 01:09:28 | |
In today’s episode, we’re flipping the lens inward. You’ve heard us talk about reading the world around you — the external baseline — but what about reading yourself? What It Is (Street Definition) Your internal baseline is your mental operating system. It’s the framework that shapes how you see, think, and react under stress. It’s built from everything you’ve lived, learned, and believed:
The core question: “Where do I think I am — and where am I actually?” Website: https://thehumanbehaviorpodcast.buzzsprout.com/share Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/ArcadiaCognerati More about Greg and Brian: https://arcadiacognerati.com/arcadia-cognerati-leadership-team/

| Baseline + Anomaly = Decision | 22 Oct 2025 | 01:03:52 | |
In this powerful and highly practical episode, we unpack one of the most important (and misunderstood) aspects of human behavior analysis: the concept of baseline plus anomaly equals decision (B + A = D). During the episode, we dive deep into why our cultural obsession with "red flags" and anomalies often leads us astray, and why everything starts with understanding normal. We also challenge the reactive approach to behavior analysis that seeks checklists for “bad actors” and instead, we show how developing a high-fidelity, context-rich baseline is the real key to situational awareness and predictive analysis. We briefly explore the origins of the Combat Hunter program, and provide real-world examples (from garbage day confusion to gas station parking lots), and illustrate how unconscious pattern recognition drives both correct and incorrect decisions. Here's what you'll learn:
This episode is a must-listen for anyone in high-stakes roles, parents, educators, or anyone who wants to improve their ability to "read the room" (and their world) with greater clarity and confidence. | #185: It's The Little Things | 16 Nov 2022 | 00:56:31
Today Greg and I are explaining what we mean when we say, “it’s the little things that matter.” We start the episode by defining what we mean when WE use that phrase, and we also explain why humans are so susceptible to missing the “little things” in their environment. During the episode we give some street definitions to the limitations in cognitive performance that affect our attention including things like adaptation, change blindness, channel capacity, and sequencing. We also give some examples of how you can help counter the effects of these natural processes. | #180: Check In The Box Training | 21 Sep 2022 | 01:02:49
On todays episode we are talking about a topic that many of you are familiar with and is often called “check in the box training.” This conversation centers around a recent Army Times article where the Sergeant Major of the Army as well as the Army Chief of Staff talked about how much time is wasted doing online training and they even went as far as to say not to do it! During the episode we get into a number of areas including the difference between training and education and our over reliance on online platforms. We also give a number of examples on how to use these systems in an effective manner as well as plenty of examples of how NOT to use online education. | #178: The Street View | 24 Aug 2022 | 01:10:03
On todays episode we are taking some of the issues that we’ve discussed in the past regarding the sociological implications of major social events and bringing them down to the street level to show how a poor decision made by someone you’ve never met before can have a major impact on your life. For this discussion we brought on Police Officer, CEO, and host of the 3 cops talk podcast, Chris Sherwin. After serving for 20 years on a police department in a major metropolitan area, Chris packed up his family and moved across the country to continue doing what he loves, serving his community as a law enforcement officer. During the episode, Chris shares some amazing street-level insight from his decades of experience and he talks about how some of the major social issues of the last few years has affected his profession and his personal life. So for this episode we had the Braid Babes be the hosts and ask us a number of questions based on the concerns that they have so that Greg and I could give them some free advice on how to improve their security posture while still maintaining great customer service. | #175: Texas Association of School Psychologists | 03 Aug 2022 | 01:52:51
This week we are releasing a podcast we did with Christopher Ponce, Brook Roberts and Dr Rachel Team from the Texas Association of School Psychologists, who have their own podcast called TASP Talks. We recorded this episode back in April and they released it on their show back in June and due to the overwhelming amount of feedback we received, we wanted to release it as a Left Of Greg episode as well. This was originally released as two separate episodes so there’s a small transition halfway through the show but it’s hardly noticeable and you’ll be able to follow along easily. We would also recommend listening to the episode in its entirety because it gets even better as the conversation progresses. We want to thank Chris Ponce and his team not only for having us on the show but we also want to thank them for their service to the children of the state of Texas. They have an incredibly difficult job and they do not get the recognition that they deserve. | #173: The Illusion of Choice | 20 Jul 2022 | 01:18:48
Today we are talking to our friends and former guests on the show, Andy Riise and Jon Macaskill. Both of these gentlemen, which is a term I use lightly in this case, bring a wealth of knowledge and experience they have gained as graduates of rival service academies and members of the Special Operations community. We invited Andy and Jon to come back on the show together because they are in the middle of training for a half ironman competition. One of the reasons they are competing in this competition is to raise money for an organization called Warrior Rising which helps support veterans who have started their own business. In the episode Jon and Andy talk about how they use their knowledge of human behavior and human performance to set themselves up for success when facing the many challenges that come with this competition. Today we are talking to RaSheed Lemon. RaSheed has an incredible amount of experience as a Marine, Soldier, State Trooper and now as a supervisor at a federal law enforcement agency. RaSheed first met Greg in Afghanistan when Greg was implementing the Insider Threat program for coalition forces. RaSheed was then tasked by the U.S. Army to continue that program and to build more insider threat programs for the Army. | #168: Chasing Symptoms | 08 Jun 2022 | 02:05:31
Today we are going to be talking about mass shooting events, and specifically school shootings, through the lenses of HBPR&A. We are doing this in order to explain, as best as we can, how and why these events occur in the first place, how and why we react the way that we do, and how and why we think the right training can PREVENT the next school attack. Greg and Brian are experts on human behavior, not on school shootings. Greg and Brian are experts in pattern recognition, not on partisan politics. Greg and Brian have a deep, fundamental understanding of how to build and implement training and education programs that are specifically designed to determine a persons likely intent, and we have a long history of creating a very real “Left Of Bang” culture at many organizations. So for this 3-part series, we will be using a different format than our typical episodes. Think of this as more of a guided discussion rather than a conversation we would have while driving to the airport. Our goal with this discussion is to allow anyone who listens to have a better understanding of these events so that they can make a more informed decision about how to solve this problem at a local level. | #166: Perceptions & Consequences | 25 May 2022 | 01:04:07
This week we are talking about perception, second and third order effects, and how ideological analysis causes us to misinterpret events. We explain these concepts by using two recent police officer involved shootings that have a lot more to the story than most people realize. During the episode we also give a general statement on the recent Buffalo supermarket shooting and I try my best to explain why these mass shootings continue to happen even though the pre- event indicators are not only glaringly obvious, but often the exact same in every case. This conversation was originally recorded last year for Brian’s Excellence in Training Academy so if you’re not a Patreon subscriber, this is the first time you have heard the conversation. In this episode we talk specifically about police pursuits and the use of “stop sticks” but the conversation really revolves around human performance and human behavior. During the discussion we talk about the physiological, psychological and sociological affects of police pursuits as well as the Tactical, Operational, and Strategic implications of them. In this weeks episode we are once again talking about the importance of understanding a persons INTENT rather than focusing on their motive. Although we start the discussion talking about school shootings, we also bring up cases that are much more common to what happens in schools on a daily basis. | #156: Challenging Your Assumptions | 23 Feb 2022 | 00:51:18
In this weeks episode we are talking about challenging our assumptions, specifically when it comes training and education. Due to the fact that we all fall victim to confirmation bias, we tend to assume that some events or outcomes are inevitable when in fact we have the ability to influence a situation far more than we realize. We discuss three different cases in the episode that we us as examples of how our own habits of thought and action can lead to poor decisions and we talk about small changes that can be made to help counter this problem. | Hardwired For Outrage | 04 Feb 2025 | 01:09:56
What if fear, rather than fairness or loyalty, is the ultimate compass guiding our moral judgments? On this episode of the Human Behavior Podcast, we explore this provocative question inspired by Elizabeth Colbert's article in the New Yorker. Joining us is moral psychologist Kirk Gray, whose compelling theory suggests our ethical decisions are deeply rooted in the fear of harm, a vestige of our evolutionary history. We contrast this with Jonathan Haidt's Moral Foundations Theory, which posits that multiple moral modules influence our judgments. Our discussion navigates through these contrasting theories, shedding light on how emotional storytelling often overshadows raw data in debates around polarizing issues like abortion and immigration. Venturing further, we unravel how fear, an evolutionary advantage, impacts our perceptions of existential threats and moral discourse. We draw parallels between ancient survival instincts and modern challenges, such as artificial intelligence and political polarization. Using allegories like the cave, we highlight the tension between perceived safety and the unknown, illustrating how comfort zones can hinder groundbreaking achievements. As we dissect the media's role in amplifying fear, we caution against the oversimplification of complex issues, likening it to the tale of horses with fangs—a narrative that distorts scientific truths and manipulates public perception. Turning our focus to decision-making, we probe the intricate interplay of instincts, ethics, and survival decisions. We discuss the role of training and adaptability in high-pressure situations, emphasizing how experience shapes our responses to unpredictable scenarios. By examining real-life examples, such as a controversial self-defense case, we illuminate the complexities of aligning personal instincts with societal and legal standards. Throughout, we underscore the timeless nature of human concerns and the importance of collective learning and adaptability in tackling both historical and contemporary issues. Join us for this thought-provoking exploration of the forces shaping our ethical landscape. Thank you so much for tuning in! We hope you enjoy the episode. In this weeks episode we are answering a question that was sent to us by one of our long time listeners. Brian reads out the entire question at the beginning of the episode but in general terms, the question has to do with how humans learn and understand consequences at a psychological and physiological level, and how that influences our behavior at a sociological level. | #152: Use a THINK, not a THING | 19 Jan 2022 | 01:02:10
Today’s episode is about our approach to solving really hard problems using a THINK instead of a THING. If you’ve been listening to the podcast for a while you will understand what we mean by this but if you’re new to the show, don’t worry because we give an explanation of what we mean by a THINK instead of a THING right up front at the beginning of the show. | #150: Ten Rules of Human Behavior | 29 Dec 2021 | 01:18:19
Today we are going through a list of ten general rules of human behavior that we discuss in many of our episodes either implicitly or explicitly. This is not meant to be some exhaustive, definitive, or all-encompassing list of everything that you need to know about human behavior, it’s simply meant to be used as a guideline from which you can make sense of the daily observations you make as well as better understand the behavior you personally demonstrate. Some of the topics we discuss include things like memory and how bad it really is, divided attention and how it affects our behavior and how all humans betray their affiliations and telegraph their intent which is what makes us so predictable! You can find a list of the topics discussed in the order in which we discussed them below, but I would recommend pulling out a notepad and jotting them down as we go because at the end we give a great example of how you can use the information we discussed during the episode. | #149: The Trouble With Narcissists | 22 Dec 2021 | 01:01:09
For this weeks episode about narcissists, we wanted to talk to someone who brings an entirely different perspective to the show. So, today Greg and I are talking to high conflict divorce expert Alana Sharps. Alana has a very niche area of expertise that she fell into after surviving an abusive relationship with her narcissistic ex-husband. After her experience, she began helping other women who were also dealing with emotionally and psychologically abusive people. This was an amazing conversation and it was even surprising to me just how many similarities there were in the different examples we discuss, even down to the exact words that a narcissist uses. I highly recommend listening to the entire episode because there are some great takeaways on how to identify and deal with someone who is displaying narcissistic personality traits. Today we are talking about how your behavior will change when you are in a crowd of people as opposed to when you are by yourself. There is a lot of research that has been conducted on crowd behavior, crowd psychology, and crowd dynamics but as most of our listeners already know, we take an “intent-based” approach rather than a motivation or ideological based approach.
