Waterfall Plunge: Jon Cheney's Journey Through Whitewater Kayaking and Life03 Apr 202501:08:58

#154 - Imagine plunging down a 35-foot waterfall strapped inside a kayak, or trying to compose a stunning piano piece that captures the serenity of nature. These are just fragments of Jon Cheney's extraordinary journey as a creator, adventurer, entrepreneur, and man of faith.

From his early years in a musical household where his parents prioritized owning a grand piano before even having proper furniture, to his teenage years in Paraguay learning Spanish, Jon's life has been defined by embracing new challenges. His remarkable ability to master languages – including Mandarin Chinese during his church mission – parallels his approach to music composition, where he sees patterns and structures that most miss.

The heart of our conversation explores Jon's passion for whitewater kayaking and the profound life lessons it's taught him. "You're going to flip over in life," Jon explains with the wisdom of someone who's faced Class 5 rapids and business setbacks alike. "But when you've learned that you can flip over and then get back up and be okay, then the world really opens up." This philosophy has guided him through entrepreneurial ventures, creative pursuits, and personal challenges.

What makes Jon's perspective particularly refreshing is his recent epiphany about pursuing multiple passions. After years of praying for divine guidance on which path to choose – music, adventure, business, or writing – he found peace in Elder Uchtdorf's simple wisdom: "It mattereth not, only be faithful." This liberating principle has energized Jon to embrace all facets of his creative spirit rather than waiting for permission to begin.

Whether you're considering your own adventure into whitewater kayaking, struggling to choose between multiple passions, or simply seeking inspiration from someone who's mastered the art of getting back up after life flips you over, Jon's story will leave you both entertained and equipped with a new perspective on life's rapids. Follow Jon on Instagram @cheneypiano or on his website joncheney.com to continue following his journey of creation and adventure!

The Pure Love of Running with Kate Olson!11 May 202300:52:21

#052 -  I have spoken to quite a few distance runners and they all have a love for running.  It is something that drives them and helps them overcome their challenges.  In this episode I spoke with ultrarunner, Kate Olson, who not only loves running, but she really finds ways to make it fun.

From taking different trails, to exploring different countries or perhaps running to get tacos, Kate finds a way to make it fun.  Part of what makes it fun for Kate is her positive attitude towards every situation.  On her last 100 mile race she encountered a torrential downpour and the rain didn't stop all night.  Did that phase Kate?  Nope!  She kept on running and took first place.  Kate Olson is the epitome of adventurer and explorer.  Runners and non-runners alike will love hearing from Kate.  She also talks about her time on the TV show Wipeout!

Human Powered Travel with Anna and Edo from the Go Far Podcast!04 May 202300:49:10

#051 - I feel like sometimes I get in a rush to get to my destination.  Talking with Anna and Edo from the Go Far Podcast made me realize I need to slow down and practice what I preach about enjoying the journey.

I had a great conversation with Edo and Anna about their podcast which is all about their own adventures and human powered travel.  What is human powered travel?  Cycling, walking, hiking and just being outside and taking things slow.  I was fascinated with the pure enjoyment they get from taking days to cycle along the Danube river.  Not everything is easy and fun, but that is part of the memories and learning these adventures create for us.

Anna spoke about her love for walking including going on pilgrimages.  For both Anna and Edo these walks have provided for them not just in a spiritual sense, but often times in a physical sense as well.  Come walk and cycle with Anna and Edo!

Adventuring With Cattle Dogs with Kirstie and Les Card from @cattledogsandco!16 Mar 202300:44:48

#045 - This was my first time really diving into adventures with pets!  I had the chance to speak with Les and Kirstie Card from Cattle Dogs and Company.  The Cards are from Nova Scotia in Canada and venture all over their Provence and neighboring areas going on adventures with their dogs.

The real stars of the show are Jackson, Memphis, and Mersey the cattle dogs.  Having the dogs has encouraged the Cards to get outdoors and explore.  It was fun to hear some of the experiences they have encountered on Prince Edward Island, The Cabot Trail, Mt. Carleton and many other locations.

I really loved how Les talked about mental health issues and how adventuring can really be a great way to fill up your cup.

Be sure and follow Les and Kirstie along with their dogs on Instagram @cattledogsandco .  They also have some great videos you will want to watch on YouTube.

Ultra Trail Running and Endurance with Michael Whiteside!09 Mar 202300:50:30

#044 - I love talking to Ultra Runners.  They have such a determination and grit that is hard to describe.  My guest this week, Michael Whiteside, is someone who I would describe as someone with both grit and determination.

Michael is from my home state of Utah and is fairly new on the Ultra Running scene.  Michael has dealt with a tough past, but uses ultra running as another way to battle past addictions and self-doubt.  It was fun talking to Michael about the beauty he sees when he runs and the community of trail runners that make up such a tight knight group.  I also love how much Michael's family and in-laws mean to him and the support they give him.

This episode was inspiring and entertaining.  I really loved getting to know who Michael is a person.  To follow along a little closer to Michael give him a follow on Instagram @michael_dean82 .

Thank for listening to Journey with Jake.  If you feel so inclined please think about leaving a review on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to podcasts.  If you are an adventurer or know somebody who is send me an email to jake@journeywithjake.net and let's talk to them!!!

Adventuring as Friends with Julie and Sara from @folkloreadventures!02 Mar 202300:43:48

#043 - Part of what makes going on adventures memorable is the time we spend with others doing the things we love.  My conversation with Julie and Sara from @folkloreadventures really showcased how much fun it is to share an experience with a friend.

Julie and Sara started their adventures together by taking a 2 week trip not really knowing each other that well.  It turns out they clicked really well together and now try to take advantage of their friendship to experience hiking, camping, backpacking, and road tripping together.  From a 7 to 8 hour drive to Yosemite National Park on a weekend all the way to Patagonia in Chile and Argentina they find the fun and enjoyment of creating memories together.

This episode is a lot of fun.  There were conversations about a close bear encounter as well as frolicking in a field with cows while wearing a dairy cow onesie.  This is an episode that will bring a smile to your face!

Feel free to follow along with Sara and Julie on their adventures by giving them a follow on Instagram @folkloreadventures .

Thanks for listening to Journey with Jake.  I would love to hear from you and know about your adventures.  Send me an email to jake@journeywithjake.net or message me on Instagram @journeywithjakepodcast .

Adventures in Morocco with Andrew Dean!16 Feb 202300:58:56

#042 - Do you remember seeing the animated version of Aladdin back in the 90s and watching Aladdin run around Agrabah?  I felt like I was in Agrabah as my guest, Andrew Dean, took me on his adventures through Morocco.

I have always been fascinated with the country of Morocco.  Morocco sits close to Europe, but is it's own unique place.  From the Blue Pearl of Morocco, the bustling souks of Marrakech, and the beautiful sand of the Sahara desert this was a fun and inspiring adventure.

Andrew tells some great stories and I learned the importance of not dwelling too much on outside factors when deciding to travel and pursue your adventures.  He also taught me the importance of appreciating the culture you are in while on your adventures.  If you have not done so put Morocco on your list of places to visit and have your own Moroccan adventure!

Ultramarathon Running with The Ultramarathon Man, Dean Karnazes!02 Feb 202300:46:01

#041 - I sometimes hear about things people accomplish and it is hard to fathom or imagine what they do.  My guest today is the Ultramarathon Man, Dean Karnazes.

Dean has done things that I can only imagine.  He has run long  distances all the over the world in some of the most unforgiving climates and temperatures including Antarctica and Death Valley.  Through all of this the biggest takeaway I came away with is how Dean has found himself.  There are so many parallels to life that we can take away from what Dean shares.  I am nowhere close to  running the distances that Dean runs, but I was able to learn more about myself and how to take things one step at a time!

Be sure and check out Dean Karnazes on social media and the web.  You can follow him on Instagram @ultramarathon or check out his website www.ultramarathonman.com .  I am sure you will be inspired as much as I am.

Remote Work and Travel with Jackie from Bon Voyage Jackie!19 Jan 202300:36:28

I loved my conversation with Jackie as we touched on some of her favorite places to visit which include Central America.  Spending the night watching an erupting volcano will surely be at the top of anyone's lists of amazing experiences.
