In this episode of The HR Masterclass, Frédéric sits down with Dave Ulrich, professor at the University of Michigan and one of the most influential thinkers HR has had in decades. The conversation is dense and rigorous, and somehow simple at the same time.
Dave makes one core argument: HR has to stop looking in the mirror and start looking out the window. He calls it Stakeholder HR. The idea is that every HR action should create value for customers, investors and communities, not just for the organization itself.
To get there, he offers a tool that is almost disarmingly simple: the "So That." Behind every HR initiative, ask the question, "So that... what?" I run leadership development so that an investor pays a premium for our stock. I hire so that a customer gets a better product. Two words, and the whole frame shifts from the activity in front of you to the outcome it creates.
You'll also hear his take on AI. Not as a threat, but as a multiplier of capacity. The real question isn't "will AI replace HR?" It's "what do we do with the time it frees up?" That's where what he calls Human Ingenuity comes in: the human ability to turn capacity into real value.
And when Frédéric asks what CHROs really say when the doors are closed, Dave answers in a single word: courage. The courage to tell a CEO that cutting headcount with AI is a good short-term fix and a bad long-term strategy.
