Mastering English intelligibility in Business with Eisha Karol #5909 Jun 202200:28:30

Nick Day is joined on The HR L&D Podcast sofa by Eisha Karol, who is founder of PronounceMe, an award-winning business which provides highly tailored level of pronunciation training to address every aspect of language learning.

Eisha explains why HR personnel need to consider intelligibility when attracting and developing talent.

PronounceMe is an Oxford University Innovation business that began as a scribble on the back of an envelope in an Italian classroom and has now become a startup at Oxford University Innovation, working across several industries, with delegates from 11 different language backgrounds.

With inclusivity and diversity at the heart of most HR agendas, it is surprising how often language is overlooked. However, Language is an expression of a person's culture, and learning a new language is a process of cultural interchange. Here in the UK, English-speaking teams form the backbone of almost every company. And yet, not everyone can hear and create the sounds of the English language, because they don’t exist in other languages.

Having supported leading brands including AXA, Amundi Asset Management and Rabobank (among others), I have invited Eisha to join me today to tell us more about her unique methodology which combines both academic research with theatre-based skills to deliver transformational training with lasting results for businesses.

In this “Mastering English intelligibility in Business” episode with Eisha Karol on The HR L&D Podcast, we also explore:

  1. What do the words Human Resources mean to you?
  2. I never knew that English as a language was difficult to learn for others due to its many complex sounds, which are not found in other languages – can you tell us more about these?
  3. Can you tell us about the often-overlooked issue of intelligibility, especially in larger organisations and why a faster way to clear communication is important for business performance?
  4. So How is PronounceMe's training different from conventional language training such as IELTS (International English Language Testing System)?
  5. How did you come to develop the training programme in the way that you have?
  6. Why do you think HR personnel need to consider intelligibility in international staff?
  7. What other issues might international/relocated staff need support with apart from spoken English language training?
  8. Can you tell us more about your new PronounceMe signature programme – called "English Mastery for Global Professionals"?

How a Cancel Culture is Silencing Us at Work with Simon Fanshawe #5505 Apr 202200:59:51

Nick Day is joined on The HR L&D Podcast sofa by Simon Fanshawe, OBE, who is a former Perrier Award-winning stand-up comedian and co-founder of Stonewall.

Simon was referred to in the 1980s as the UK’s ‘first openly gay comedian’ and he now works with businesses and organisations to encourage honest conversations about diversity to achieve real change.

Simon has been listed as one of the UK’s Most Influential Thinkers by HR Magazine and he was called ‘Inclusion Royalty’ by The Sunday Times.

Now, after becoming increasingly frustrated by the silencing of views and the impact of cancel culture in the workplace, Simon wrote a ‘manifesto for change’ which has just been published as a book titled – ‘The Power of Difference’.

The book is a timely call to action in response to a growing intolerance of different political and social views in the wider world and the negative impact this is having on how we behave at work – evidenced by a recent YouGov poll which stated that 40% of the Britons at the end of 2021 said they had stopped themselves from expressing political or social views for fear of judgement or negative responses from others at work.

Topics people were reluctant to talk about included race relations and discrimination, sexuality, women’s and gay rights and transgender issues.

So today, stay with me as we discover how a Cancel Culture is Silencing us at work and what we can do collectively, to support real progress.  We’ll also find out more about The Power of Difference!

In this “How a Cancel Culture is Silencing Us at Work” episode with Simon Fanshawe on The HR L&D Podcast, we also explore:

  1. What do the words Human Resources mean to you?
  2. What strategies can companies follow if they want to develop an inspiring and inclusive culture?
  3. Why has HR become one of the hardest jobs in a high-growth company?
  4. What are the common issues that HR leaders encounter?
  5. What strategies from your book can help some of our listeners?
  6. What approach would you recommend an HR professional takes to ensure they are able to deliver an effective HR service?
  7. In your 25 years of experience, what have you found have been the biggest challenges or obstacles in achieving rapid growth or change?
  8. Can you tell us more about your The People Leader Accelerator programme?
  9. If you could reduce all your HR experience into one piece of advice to help an HR leader scale for success, what would it be and why?

10 Strategies to Improve Recruitment Diversity Post-Pandemic with Margaret Ochieng #4622 Nov 202100:56:49

Nick Day from JGA HR Recruitment is joined on the HR L&D Podcast by Margaret Ochieng who is a Business Psychologist, a Diversity & Inclusion consultant and founder at “The Inclusive Village”, where she designs workplace solutions that enable people and organisations to adopt “a village culture approach to inclusion”.

Nick and Margaret team up to provide expert guidance on the importance of a diverse recruitment strategy, in addition to the benefits of having one.

Margaret’s approach to D&I helps individuals and organisations to identify and remove barriers to inclusion, performance and creativity posed by silos, “clans” and “tribes” that often emerge explicitly or implicitly in social groups including workplaces.

Movements such as the #MeToo movement, the more recent #BlackLivesMatter movement and repeated reports of entrenched diversity shortcomings at the top levels of business have highlighted that considerable work still needs to be done when it comes to developing work environments that are fit for purpose in relation to encouraging and promoting diversity and inclusion.

Many studies behind current recruitment strategies highlight weaknesses that need to be addressed if businesses want to improve their processes for attracting and retaining diverse talent.  Many of these processes are embedded in the cultural values, strategies, and behaviours of organisations.  Margaret Ochieng and Nick Day discuss 10 Strategies to Improve Recruitment Diversity Post-Pandemic and explore why it is essential businesses and talent leaders recognise the value behind building a robust diversity recruitment strategy.

By publishing this podcast, we hope we can help businesses and talent leaders to recognise the value behind building a robust recruitment diversity strategy.

In this "10 Strategies to Improve Recruitment Diversity Post-Pandemic" episode of the HR L&D Podcast with Margaret Ochieng we discuss:
  1. Biases
  2. War on Talent
  3. Diversifying Talent Pools
  4. Realignment and Evolution
  5. Visionary Leadership
  6. Be Vulnerable
  7. Reap the Benefits
  8. Opportunities
  9. Be Non-Performative
  10. Transparency and Accountability

Later that year same year, my guest also de-anonymized the highly valued mobile app, Secret, which put him on the front page of Wired.com, CNNMoney, CNET, Forbes, and the Washington Post — all in the same day!

Seriously!

That is because Bryan is a world-famous Security Keynote Speaker, Ethical Hacker, Author and Former US Marine who is joining us today to talk about the importance of cyber security.

Bryan is passionate about fighting for consumers rights, privacy and educating the public about how to stay safe in a constantly changing technology landscape. He currently lives in Seattle with his 2 children and he now freelances as a cybersecurity consultant and advises John McAfee and his company MGT.

Now with 81% of UK SMEs confirming that they had suffered a data breach or cyber-attack, with a considerable two in five (37%) admitting they had suffered multiple breaches – I was compelled to invite Bryan to the show – because Payroll in particular, is a department that is extremely vulnerable to cyber-attacks.

In this “Protecting employees from Cyber Attacks  & Cyber Fraud” episode with Bryan Seely on The HR L&D Podcast, we also explore:
  1. Bryan, you became one of the world’s most famous hackers in 2014 – can you tell our listeners why?
  2. I understand the Secret Service called you a hero and praised your courage and integrity – What's the story?
  3. In the world of HR, why are we seeing increases in phishing scams, ransomware attacks, cyber fraud, recruitment scams and corporate espionage?
  4. For HR leaders, cyber and data security is a critical concern. With departments so vulnerable to attack, what can be done to better protect data?
  5. How likely is it that one of our listeners suffers a ransomware attack (spoiler alert: it is higher than you think)!
  6. What is going on inside the mind of a potential hacker or Cybercriminal?
  7. How do hackers decide who to attack and when?
  8. What are the key questions you would want to ask your software provider to give you the confidence that the employee data is secure?
  9. What advice would you give to help HR departments protect themselves and their employees from scam and phishing attempts?
  10. Why should HR and Talent Leaders be wary of fake LinkedIn profiles and how they can identify one?
  11. Cyber Fraud: The Web of Lies (available on Amazon) - we find out more about this best-selling book (and why everyone should read it)!

In this “The Speed of Trust & HR Leadership” episode with Stephen M. R. Covey on The HR L&D Podcast, questions asked include:

* Developing trust is going to be the key subject for today’s podcast and I think it is especially relevant for those working in senior leadership or HR-related positions right now as organisations strive to maintain engagement, relevancy and stay ahead of the digital curve. So is trust a learnable skill?

* You say in your book that “Trust is a hard-edged, economic driver” – what do you mean by this?

* What HR initiatives do you see trust impacting the most?

* Is trust earned or is trust given?

* You say in your book that “Trust is the new currency of our interdependent, collaborative world” – is it possible then to restore trust when it has been lost?

* You have a chapter in the book which talks about how “Families are organisations too” – I love this concept. We spend more time at work than with our own families, so can you bring this concept to life for our listeners in relation to Trust?

* Right now as many businesses evolve to working from home models of management, which requires trust for them to work optimally, what are the four questions you like to ask organisations that you state in your book, often result in “A-Ha” moments as a result!

* Where is leadership going?

* What’s the next “big thing?” in the world of HR and Learning & Development?

Why Aligning HR with Marketing is Critical with Neil Bedwell #32

Nick Day is joined on The HR L&D Podcast sofa by Neil Bedwell, Founding Partner and President at LOCAL, a Change Marketing consultancy.

Prior to starting LOCAL Neil led global digital marketing at Coca-Cola and ran the brand’s digital program for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.

Now, Neil and his team use consumer marketing techniques inside some of the world's biggest and best companies (including Capital One, Kaiser Permanente, South West Airlines, Chick-fil-A, P&G, UPS) to engage with and build belief amongst companies’ most valuable assets — their people.

Neil knows that it is the companies that put People First that will survive and thrive post-pandemic which is why HR and Marketing need to be more aligned if businesses want to truly fuel future growth.

Neil wants to inspire HR practitioners to think and work like marketers to build belief, fuel adoption, and create opportunities for all employees to become owners of change. Why? Because the future of work depends on it.

Neil is a regular speaker, Forbes writer, and media guest, where he offers a transparent, engaging deep dive into current research, practical examples, and burning questions around the new space of Change Marketing that is disrupting and improving how HR and people leaders approach employee engagement, company culture, and the employee experience.

In this “Why Aligning HR with Marketing is Critical” episode with Neil Bedwell on The HR L&D Podcast, we also explore:

* In these times of turbulence and rapid change, focusing on employees is more critical, and more challenging, than ever before. Can you tell us more about why this harmony between Marketing and HR is so important?

* The correlation between engaged employees and company performance is increasingly well documented (with some recent studies claiming that highly engaged employees outperform those with low engagement by 250%). So why do so many companies STILL treat their employees like an afterthought?

* What is LOCAL's unique approach to this macro problem, and how did you land it?

* What the biggest mistake most companies make when thinking about employee engagement?

* Why do you think the future of work depends on HR and Marketing being closely aligned?

* If I'm an HR leader listening to this, where should I start?

* Something that has been disrupting how HR and people leaders approach employee engagement, company culture, and the employee experience – is Change Marketing - can you tell us more about this?

* How can HR practitioners listening to this start to create opportunities for their employees to become owners of change?

Diversity & Inclusion Thought Leadership with Margaret Ochieng #017

Nick Day from JGA HR Recruitment is joined on the HR L&D Podcast by Margaret Ochieng who is a Business Psychologist, a Diversity & Inclusion consultant and founder at “The Inclusive Village”, where she designs workplace solutions that enable people and organisations to adopt “a village culture approach to inclusion”.

I met with Margaret at a recent Recruitment and Diversity event hosted by CIPD London where both Margaret and I were invited to form part of the expert panel.  I loved her thought leadership approach to diversity and inclusion, which is why I was delighted that she was happy to join me for a more detailed conversation on this podcast.

Margaret’s approach to D&I helps individuals and organisations to identify and remove barriers to inclusion, performance and creativity posed by silos, “clans” and “tribes” that often emerge explicitly or implicitly in social groups including workplaces.

As part of the "village spirit", Margaret is also organising a fantastic event for women who want to be game-changers in March!  Stay tuned to find out more about that later on in the podcast…

In this "Diversity & Inclusion Thought Leadership" episode of the HR L&D Podcast with Margaret Ochieng we discover:

* What led Margaret to become a champion for encouraging businesses to deliver more inclusive talent assessment, selection and leadership processes

* How can organisations create inclusive and human-centric work environments where everyone has a fair chance to thrive?

* Why organisations should not be looking or candidates that are a "culture fit".   Let's evolve organisational cultures!

* Are getting better or worse from a D&I front perspective?

* What does D&I Research tell us

* How can we build resilience against "diversity fatigue" and why building a village approach can help.

* Why we must eliminate corporate checkbox systems and replace them with a way of life in the workplace that promotes inclusion

* The most important insights in relation to D&I as it is now within businesses

* The three pioneering and inspiring people Margaret would love to share a dinner party with - and why!

* Some immediately implementable D&I actions you can immediately implement after listening to this podcast?

* Why it is important to be curious about the status quo in your organisation

* How you can ask questions that will keep the D&I conversation open

* The journey that led Margaret to remove the "impossible" from her vocabulary!

* Why you should attend the “A Million Dreams Game Changers Event" being hosted by Margaret in March, which has been designed to help women to make big leaps in 2020 and beyond!
