#126: You Don't Have a Sleep Problem — You Have a Hormone Problem20 Apr 202600:12:21

You've tried the sleep tips. You've tried the supplements. You've gone to bed earlier, cut back on screens, downloaded the meditation app.

And you're still not sleeping.

Here's what I want you to understand: you don't have a sleep problem. You have a hormone problem. And that distinction changes everything about how you fix it.

In this episode I share the story of Fiona — a client who came to me completely exhausted, caught in a vicious cycle of hot flushes, night anxiety, afternoon energy crashes and creeping weight gain. And I walk through exactly what we did to break that cycle and get her sleeping again.

Fiona's Story

Fiona was doing everything right. She was smart, capable and had tried every sleep solution she could find.

But she was waking multiple times a night drenched in sweat. Hot flushes pulling her out of sleep just as she'd finally drifted off. Then lying there afterwards with her heart pounding and a low-level anxiety she couldn't explain.

The days were brutal. She'd crash around 2pm and spend the afternoon reaching for sugar and coffee just to function. The weight was creeping on. She was eating less and exercising more, which made her more exhausted, which made her sleep worse.

She was completely stuck.

When she came to me she said: "I feel like my body has completely given up."

This episode is for every woman who has felt exactly that way.

What We Cover In This Episode

🔹 Why hot flushes and night sweats are an oestrogen issue — not a sleep issue When oestrogen fluctuates, your body's internal thermostat becomes unstable. Your brain gets a false signal that you're overheating and triggers a flush to cool you down. This pulls you straight out of deep sleep. Treating this as a sleep problem will never work because it is an oestrogen regulation problem.

🔹 Why night anxiety is a progesterone issue That low-level dread you feel lying awake in the middle of the night — that sense of unease you can't quite explain — is your nervous system without its natural calming buffer. Progesterone is that buffer. When it drops, everything feels bigger and harder to manage after dark.

🔹 The afternoon energy crash and cravings explained Poor sleep keeps cortisol elevated. Elevated cortisol drives sugar and carbohydrate cravings as your body desperately looks for a quick energy hit. So you reach for the chocolate at 3pm, your blood sugar spikes and crashes, you feel worse, and that night the whole cycle repeats.

🔹 Why magnesium alone is never going to be enough Magnesium is a wonderful support tool. But it cannot replace declining progesterone, stabilise fluctuating oestrogen or reset a dysregulated cortisol pattern. If you've been taking magnesium and still not sleeping, this is why.

🔹 What we actually did to fix Fiona's sleep We stopped treating her sleep as a sleep problem and started treating it as a hormone problem. Within the first week her night sweats reduced noticeably. By week three she was sleeping through most nights. The afternoon cravings were almost gone. The weight started shifting. And she said, "I feel like myself again."

The Bottom Line

Most advice out there for perimenopause sleep is aimed at helping you fall asleep faster without ever asking why you're not sleeping in the first place.

The why matters. It matters enormously. Because the why determines the fix.

For most women in perimenopause and menopause, the why is hormonal.

#125 Why You're Not Sleeping, And It's Not Just Stress07 Apr 202600:13:16

If you're waking at 3am, lying there with your brain running laps while the rest of the world sleeps, this episode is for you.

Not because I have another list of sleep tips. But because I want to tell you something that nobody else has probably said to you yet.

This is not stress. This is hormonal. And it is completely fixable.

In this episode of The Hormone Hub Podcast I get really honest about my own sleep struggles — the racing brain, the random 3am worry spiral, the sadness that arrives out of nowhere in the middle of the night — and I explain exactly what is driving all of it from a hormonal perspective.

Because once you understand what's actually going on, everything changes.

What We Cover In This Episode

🔹 Why perimenopause sleep problems are hormonal, not psychological When progesterone declines in your 40s, you lose your body's natural calming buffer. That anxiety, that sadness, those racing thoughts at 3am? This is low progesterone. Not a mental health crisis. A hormone shift.

🔹 The cortisol and blood sugar connection When blood sugar drops overnight, your body releases cortisol and adrenaline to compensate. Those hormones do their job — but they also pull you straight out of sleep. This is one of the most common and most overlooked drivers of 3am waking in women over 40.

🔹 The exhausted but wired cycle Your cortisol rhythm has flipped. High when it should be low. Low when it should be high. So you're dragging through the day and wired the moment your head hits the pillow. This is not a personality trait. It is a hormonal pattern.

🔹 Why alcohol is making things worse It feels like it helps you relax. But biologically, alcohol reduces your REM sleep, raises your body temperature and increases the likelihood of waking in the second half of the night. I share my own experience with this — including the nausea — and what I suggest instead.

🔹 What to do when the 3am brain loop starts Two practical, science-backed strategies you can use tonight to calm your nervous system and get back to sleep without lying there fighting your own brain.

The Real Reason Nothing Has Worked

Most sleep advice is not designed for your body. Not at this stage of life. Not with what your hormones are doing right now.

Sleep hygiene, meditation apps, earlier bedtimes — none of these are bad suggestions. But if your progesterone is low, your cortisol is dysregulated and your blood sugar is crashing overnight, no amount of screen-free evenings is going to fix that.

You are not failing at sleep. You are solving the wrong problem.

This episode will help you start solving the right one.

Episode 26: The Secret to Your Success06 Sep 202200:22:16

"The big secret in life is that there is no secret. Whatever is your goal, you can get there if you are willing to work."

Episode 25: Do you really need to Detox?30 Aug 202200:23:00

Spring time here in the southern hemisphere and back to school in the northern, so we are about to be inundated with detoxes, cleanses, potions, pills and diets to have us feeling younger, skinnier and "cleaner"!

So do we need a radical detox?

The short answer is NO. BUT (hehe I feel I throw in a BUT every week) mindfully cutting back on toxins and overindulging in alcohol and comfort foods can support the physical, mental and emotional (and hormonal!)  imbalances from an unhealthy lifestyle.

Now our body is designed to be in a constant state of detoxification and it does this naturally - through our colon, lungs, kidneys, liver and skin…but if we are feeling a little sluggish and heavy there are a lot of simple steps we can take to give it a helping hand!

In today's episode we have a look at simple steps you can take to choose to eat and consume everything in your life well. Including what you eat, listen to, speak and read.

If you are looking for a circuit breaker that's not too radical, our 10 Day Kickstart starts Monday and might just be the trick to getting you started.

Episode 24: Real results with real women23 Aug 202200:21:41

You might be thinking…yep I want to make some changes BUT…
I'm really busy, how will I have time
I've tried everything and nothing works
How do I know this will work for me?

In the last few episodes I've been talking a lot about the importance of getting your blood sugar under control to switch off your fat storage hormones, reset your metabolism and shift your mindset. Today I bring it together and showcase some of our Well Balanced Woman clients, who are regular women, just like you, with busy lives, limited time and were able to make simple changes and get the results they were after.

It's important to see examples of what real success looks like so that you can ground yourself in the knowing that it's possible for you too…

It's also important to know that my clients are all time poor - busy working women just like you, juggling work, partners, families. If they can do it, you can too and today I'm going to show you how they did it.

You don't want to miss:

  • Sally who got her insulin resistance under control and switched off her fat storing hormone to drop 10 kg, have more energy and sleep better

OR

  • Nadina who overcame her fibromyalgia and chronic IBS because we balanced her hormones and reduced her inflammation by customising the foods she can eat with the Food Sensitivity Test
You can see Nadina's full interview here: https://vimeo.com/554120614/d28bf3502f

Or

  • Maria who realised that she didn't have to go through this alone, and it was OK to let go of the idea that things needed to be perfect.

Episode 23: Mastering Your Energy and Your Appetite16 Aug 202200:20:53

We are all connected to biological rhythms and cycles that influence the natural ebbs and flows of our energy, our nutritional needs and our sleep patterns.

Regardless of whether or not you are still menstruating, on birth control, had a hysterectomy or been through menopause, you can still tap into these rhythms. We aren't robots and we definitely don't have the same levels of energy, appetite, creativity and productivity day in and day out.

By tuning in to these cycles, we can tune into what our body needs.

These biological rhythms influence important functions such as:
Sleep
Metabolism
Heart Rate
Blood Pressure
Body Temperature
Urine production, and
Hormone levels.

Start to notice the similarities…

  • The circadian rhythm is 24 hours long
  • The female cycle is 28 (ish) days long
  • The lunar cycle is 28 (ish) days long (technically 29.5 days long)
  • The lunar cycle has 4 distinct phases
  • The female cycle has 4 distinct phases
  • The 4 seasons all have different qualities; spring, summer, autumn, winter
  • The 4 phases of the female cycle all have different qualities.

Interesting connection!!

Each phase offers a different kind of energy than the last, even coming down to the different food requirements that our body needs during each specific phase.

Once you tap into these trends, you will see powerful shifts in your energy levels, your mood, digestion, sleep, creativity, productivity and overall health.

Moon cycling links our menstrual phases to our lunar cycle. So regardless of whether we are menstruating or not, we can be guided by a cycle.

The lunar cycle is one of the most powerful cycles on the planet. It's part of controlling the four seasons, and it affects the tidal currents in the ocean. The interaction between the sun, the moon and the earth all play a role in this.

Following the lunar cycle and syncing up to its rhythm is simpler than you think!

It may take you a couple of weeks to get the hang of it, but once you do, its pretty easy to follow along with the lunar phases.

Episode 22: How to make your healthy eating even healthier!08 Aug 202200:34:19

Is it a diet…is it a supplement…. NO, it's a different way of looking at the way we eat.

Today I speak with farmer Greg Peterson, from Urban Farm,  who is on a mission to transform our global food system.

It's a sentiment I couldn't agree with more. Our bodies were designed to eat real food - not manufactured and processed "food".

Years ago I ran nutrition talks in kindergartens and the kids came up with this rhyme. It's "real food" if:

If it grew in the ground
Or grew on a tree
If it lived on the earth
Or swam in the sea…

When we are eating locally grown, in season produce it is 100% better for us AND better for the planet. Our current food system is broken. The lack of nutrition, proliferation of environmental toxins and manufactured foods, and the average distance our food travels to our tables, has reduced its nutritional density.

We are opting for convenience over nutrition, and paying for it with our health.

We've lost touch with what real food looks like and in this great conversation, Greg and I drill down into the cracks that are in our current food system and also simple steps you take to make a change to your own health and the health of the planet.

We have a chat about:

  • Food miles - how far food travels from where it is grown to where it is consumed
  • Food nutrition - the farther food travels the less nutrient dense it is
  • The impact shipping food halfway around the world has on the environment
  • The supply chain issues that is causing current ongoing food shortages

We also dip our toes into Greg's passion for permaculture AND how you can get started simply and cheaply to have your own fresh produce - even if you have limited space, money and time!

Episode 21: Is your healthy eating making you sick?02 Aug 202200:19:14

Bloating, gas and hives, oh my!

You've no doubt heard the quote that food can be our medicine… and the flip side is, it can be our poison too. There is no doubt that our hormones change the way our body responds to food and this can bring on a range of inflammatory and very often annoying symptoms.

The fastest way to stop guessing which foods (and products such as toothpastes and deodorants too!) are not right for you right now, is with a food sensitivity test.

Identify exactly which foods aren't working for you - instead of restrictive elimination diets that take out entire food groups unnecessarily, leaving you feeling as though there is nothing left to eat.

In todays episode I explain why I have used this particular test with every single client, for the past 5 years and why it works.

Food sensitivity tests have proven to be effective for the treatment of:

  • Hormonal symptoms and imbalances
  • Bloating, reflux, irritable bowel, diarrhoea, leaky gut, constipation, flatulence and poor digestion
  • Headaches, migraines, joint pain and seasonal allergies such as sinus and hay fever
  • Recurring and unresolved illness and infections
  • Behavioural issues, poor concentration, poor memory, brain fog and low energy levels
  • Food cravings, fatigue and poor sleep
  • Eczema, psoriasis, hives, acne, rashes, itchy, dry and inflamed skin.

Episode 20: Wild and Wise Women Over 5026 Jul 202200:36:54

When we hit 50 (or 40 or 60 for that matter!) we are NOT old ladies. Not even close to it. We have plenty of living left to do and we should be living vibrant and energetic lives! We also come with the benefits of experience, wisdom and hindsight!

In this episode, it is my turn to be interviewed by the vivacious Kip Clarke, host of the Wild and Wise Women Over 50 masterclass series. Kip created the masterclass series for women to reignite your passions and use the wisdom of your decades to unleash a vibrant, sexy new you!

In our interview we talked about how we are living in this body for the next 20, 30, 40, 50 and more years - so we need to pay attention to it, take care of it and we need to learn to love it. If we aren't taking care of it, no one else is going to.

When we think of our pets. How long until we take the dog to the vet if it starts to limp? We're on the phone immediately booking appointments and x rays. How about the kids? Maybe a few days, more of a wait and see but we generally end up erring on the side of caution. Then when it comes to our own body or how we are feeling… It can be months or even YEARS before we actually address what is going on.

Our bodies never lie. Our bodies tell us the truth and we have learned to master the art of ignoring it. Ladies it's time to pay attention to that little tap on the shoulder before it becomes a smack on the head!

Life is to be lived and it's never too late to start loving the body you're in.

Episode 19: The Estrogen Dance - Too much or not enough?19 Jul 202200:27:07

Estrogen plays a big role in our reproductive health, it gives us our boobs and curves, it is critical in helping us create healthy pregnancies and babies.

On top of that, estrogen promotes new bone growth - preventing osteoporosis, and also supports our cardiovascular health and plays a role in regulating our insulin response to prevent insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes.

There is however a fine line between too much and not enough estrogen.

Fluctuating and high estrogen, which is common during perimenopause, can trigger a range of inflammatory symptoms.

Similarly low levels of estrogen during and post menopause can be just as problematic in the form of hot flushes, insomnia, anxiety and overwhelm - resulting in a loss of confidence and self esteem.

Today we look at the literal highs and lows and how you can best support your hormones and your body through this transition and come out the other side - feeling more energised and confident than ever.

Episode 18: Stop people pleasing with leadership coach Jo Zulaica11 Jul 202200:35:06

As women many of us are natural people pleasers. We have an extraordinary capacity to take on more to support others - we're honestly all a bit too capable for our own good!  Be it partners, children, parents, friends, family, work, community and we've been doing it most of our lives, so it's ingrained deep into our psyche.

Today I share a great conversation with leadership coach Jo Zulaica.  Jo is an experienced leadership coach who works with women professionally to help them find their voice and step into their full potential.

Jo's work is particularly relevant for all of us in this mid phase of life,  and helps coach women to shut down that negative self chatter, tap into your core values and step into your own identity  - the one that's outside being a partner/ wife/ mother/ daughter / employee and so on.

We talk about the importance of filling your own cup and how having the confidence to put ourselves first  - physically, mentally and emotionally, means we're coming from a very abundant place, a very full up, a very happy, a very fulfilled and satisfied and rich place.

In this episode Jo and I talk about the importance of filling your own cup first and what that looks like for you.

  • What does that look like for you and how each of us can only know that for ourselves
  • How to shut down that negative chatter in our heads that tells us we're too busy, don't have enough time, money etc to value investing back in ourselves
  • The importance of tapping into your core values.

Jo gives us some great questions to think about and the good, sometimes surprising news is, we get to choose!

How do I want to be?
How do I want to eat?
How do I get my energy?
How do I restore?
How do I fill my cup?

Episode 17: The secret to getting a good night's sleep04 Jul 202200:23:34

If you can't sleep at night, then you're not alone.

While sleep is so essential for our health, it can also be so elusive. It's often one of the first signs and symptoms of peri menopause – quickly followed by exhaustion and fatigue, and can last well beyond menopause (really…did it ever come back after kids??!!).

Here we look at why you're struggling to get a decent night's sleep and what you can do about it.

Sleep is one of the fundamental building blocks towards health. Poor sleep has clinically been shown to increase the risk of developing;

  • Weight gain
  • Blood pressure and cardiovascular disease
  • Poor work performance
  • Fatigue
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Accelerated ageing
  • Diabetes
  • Mood swings, anxiety and depression.

Oh the joys!

While sleeping tablets and even antidepressants are commonly prescribed for women struggling to sleep, it might help with short term relief…but to really make a lasting change, we need to get to the underlying causes of why we are waking up in the first place. Otherwise it's going to be a constant struggle!

In today's episode I chat about:

–  Some of the common reasons WHY your sleep might be so disrupted

–  How you can combat this naturally.

115 Surgically Induced Menopause: Coming ready or not!24 Apr 202400:36:04

Welcome to a powerful episode of The Hormone Hub where we are talking about the unexpected journey of surgically induced menopause.

Today, we are joined by my friend and mentor from years ago when I first took my business online. Tammy Guest is a speaker, a helicopter pilot and a freedom seeker who takes people on adventures and reminds them how to live an amazing life.

Tammy is also a naturopath and today she shares her candid journey of her hysterectomy following the discovery of 2 large masses in her abdomen. We talk about the unanticipated immediate onset of hot flushes, the challenges of surgery recovery, and the relief found in bioidentical hormones.

Whether you're facing a similar surgery or supporting someone who is, this episode is a must-listen

☑️ What led to the decision for a hysterectomy and how to prepare mentally and physically.

☑️ An honest discussion about the sudden hot flushes and other symptoms that blindsided our guest.

☑️ Tips and personal insights on recovering from a major surgery like a hysterectomy.

☑️ How bioidentical hormones can be life-changing in managing menopausal symptoms post-surgery.

The biggest take away... you know your body better than anyone. If something doesn't feel right... get it checked. If it still doesn't feel right, get a second opinion.

Episode 16: How unconscious stress can sabotage our behaviours with Karlie McKeand28 Jun 202200:21:57

Why is it that we can have all the best intentions in the world but we just can't get ourselves to the finish line?

In this episode I speak with my good friend, Karlie McKeand who is a naturopath and the creator of NER - Naturopathic Emotional Release. We look at the unconscious stresses that lead us to sabotaging our goals, stemming from underlying emotions or underlying stress patterns that throw us off track from what we set out to achieve.

This can be due to certain belief systems, or things that happened in our past, that we may or may not be aware of, where our brain has created a particular pattern designed to keep us safe.

This can be really helpful in certain situations - for example unconsciously slamming on the brakes if a car stops in front of us. Then other times it creates that self-sabotaging pattern and the result is that sometimes we don't do the things that we really want to.

Karlie has created a protocol called NER  - Naturopathic Emotional Release, can be used to assess underlying emotional drivers on clients of all ages.

NER has successfully been used to treat:

  • Anxiety
  • Bed-wetting
  • Chronic conditions
  • Digestive conditions
  • Food aversions
  • Headaches
  • Hormonal imbalances and fertility challenges
  • Mental health issues
  • Pain
  • PMS
  • Self-sabotaging behaviours
  • Sleep issues
  • Stress
  • Trauma and grief
  • Weight loss

Episode 15: The #1 hormone driving weight gain in our 40's and 50's20 Jun 202200:22:27

Once you hit your 40s and 50s, your body is undergoing the biggest change since puberty which can leave you feeling exhausted, waking up in the night, cranky and reaching for sugar, chocolate, wine and cheese just to keep you going through a busy day.

And how your body burns fat (or not…) has completely changed.

To say the least, once you hit your 40's and 50s, regaining your energy and shifting that belly fat requires you to work WITH your hormones.

As your estrogen and progesterone levels fluctuate wildly from your early 40s and and naturally produce less around 50, your body becomes more sensitive to signal a key fat storage hormone  - namely insulin.

Naturally declining levels of estrogen puts you at risk of weight gain and having insulin resistance worsens the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause - but the news isn't all bad!

In this episode I cover:

  • The signs of insulin resistance and what to be tested for
  • Why conventional recommendation of "lose weight" isn't helpful
  • How to overcome cravings
  • Diet and lifestyle considerations

No woman should be left to silently suffer the potentially debilitating symptoms of perimenopause and menopause. I want to give you the facts so you can make informed decisions about what is right for YOU and YOUR body. No one knows your body better than you do and you also have your own personal threshold of what symptoms you're prepared to put up with.

We talk about the different types of Hormone Therapy, what type of Hormone Therapy is appropriate for the different stages of perimenopause and menopause - the benefits and also the downsides or risks associated.

In this episode we talk about:

  • Diet and lifestyle considerations, whether you're choosing to use MHT or not
  • Who MHT is suitable for and when it's appropriate to use it

Episode 11: Cheers to that... One woman's story of giving up daily drinking.24 May 202200:28:31

It likely comes as no surprise that alcohol, health, hormones and weight loss goals generally don't mix, and if we're being honest, there really are many valid reasons to have a serious look at our drinking habits and drastically reduce or even give up the booze.

Certainly having a glass of wine, or whatever your drink of choice, is also a cherished pastime, a form of self-medication, a conduit for connecting with friends and is infused into most of our social gatherings - if you've been hanging around me long enough, you'll know that I'm not adverse to a cheeky glass of wine.

So what does it take to stop drinking? Today we have a special guest Nicole Layton, the Director of Insight Talent Solutions - Recruiter, career and mindfulness coach, who openly and honestly shares her decision to give up alcohol for close to two years.

Nicole shares how she came to this decision, the process and benefits that came from it and also the resistance of other people when you are trying to navigate a social life without alcohol.

This is a must listen episode for anyone who has ever questioned their own alcohol consumption, or woken up and vowed to stop drinking, or starts most Mondays with a "no alcohol until the weekend" vow and makes it until Wednesday…

In this episode our guest Nicole shares her story of giving up alcohol for close to 2 years.

  • How she came to decide to quit, and even then it was just going to be midweek
  • The unexpected benefits to her health, her relationship, hormones and her weight
  • How the hardest part has been navigating her "new social life" and the resistance of friends and her social circle.

Episode 10: Heart attacks can happen to younger women too...16 May 202200:26:09

Today we're getting serious… Heart disease is the #1 cause of death of women worldwide, and 1 woman every hour in Australia aged 45-65 dies as a result of heart disease. That's around 3 x more than breast cancer!

The good news is, it's also largely preventable!!

While so much of my work and what I talk about is focused on hormone health - by managing this with dietary and lifestyle changes we are actually also reducing your risk of heart disease at the same time… it's very much a holistic approach.

Don't let those little whispers turn into screams. Get checked and start making some positive changes today. If you're waiting for a sign - this is it!

In this episode I talk about the risk factors that are specific to women.

  • The lesser known signs and symptoms that you're having a heart attack, which could save your life (and it's NOT clutching your chest and dropping to the ground!)
  • 4 simple steps you can start making today to reduce your risk of heart disease and heart attack
  • A few common myths busted.

Are you trying to do all the "right" things and not getting any results when it comes to your weight loss efforts? Maybe you're feeling ripped off because you've been good all week, nothing's changed, so come Friday you face plant into a cheese platter and a bottle of wine… that's if you made it until Friday!

Certainly what may have worked in our 20's and 30's is not working so well now.

In this episode you don't want to miss:

  • Why stress can be sabotaging your weight loss efforts - and other ways it can affect your health.
  • We can't always change the amount of stress (or perceived stress) we have going on, but we can learn to change the way we respond to it.

Episode 7: Anxiety, overwhelm and rage - feeling and dealing with big emotions25 Apr 202200:35:11

"I feel weird" - it's not right or wrong, it's how you feel.

Anxiety, anger, rage, depression - these are some of the big emotions that are exacerbated by fluctuating hormones during our 40' s and 50's. Today's guest Nic Topp is a respected mental health naturopath, specialising in mental health and mindset.

We chat about mindset, emotions, confidence and how to navigate this as we deal with our own changing hormones, the mental and emotional loads we carry for others - all while there is still a heaviness in the world.

It's essential we find the space to take care of ourselves and Nic gives us steps to actually find the pieces of ourselves again - the things that light us up and bring us joy. These are the things that calm our nervous systems and benefit our mental health. It's OK for us to embrace our wisdom, knowledge and experience and stop people pleasing. The people will be OK!

You don't want to miss:

  • How to stop, take a breath to get back into your body
  • Why you need to stop carrying the load for everyone else

Episode 5: Thyroid Health With Missy Beavers11 Apr 202200:39:53
Today I'm joined by an amazing guest, Missy Beavers. Missy is the founder of The Healthy Solution, helping women end the exhausting thyroid battle.

Anyone who has experienced a chronic health condition knows how hopeless it can feel. Missy was diagnosed with Hashimoto Thyroiditis as a child and was made to believe by doctors that she'd be on medication for the rest of her life. As an adult, with a Masters in Nutrition, she created a program that reversed the condition and allowed her to step away from medication.

In this episode, Missy and I dig deeper into why the thyroid is so crucial to your health. We talk about the different signs and symptoms and why you shouldn't settle for "normal" thyroid results when you know something isn't right.

You don't want to miss:

  • Why your thyroid is a BIG deal (Hint… You have thyroid receptors in every single cell in your body!)
  • Signs and symptoms that something is off with your thyroid
  • Different presentations of thyroid disorders and Missy's incredible story - weighing in as a high school student at 125kg, despite having a healthy diet
  • Why your blood tests might come back as "normal". What tests you need to have done and why we need to look at the optimal range - the "normal" range is too wide. And the need to push for a full thyroid panel test.
  • What your thyroid does.

Thyroid Blood Tests...

If you're off to your GP, here's a list of thyroid tests that give you a full picture of what's going on… Always ask for a copy of your results!

  • Remember to stop taking any supplements 48 hours before your blood tests to give a true reading
  • Continue with any prescribed medications unless advised otherwise by your GP....

- TSH, T3, T4

- Anti thyroglobulin (anti-Tg) antibodies

- Antithyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO)

** GP's don't like to order a full thyroid panel, but this is the simplest way of detecting autoimmune thyroid conditions. If you are showing signs and symptoms, or have a family history, it's certainly worth pushing for!

Now if you think menopause isn't even on your horizon yet, stay with me!

My goal is to break these stigmas down, so we can embrace this new chapter and be in the best shape of our lives!

Episode 3: It's not you, it's your hormones! Perimenopause symptoms explained...30 Mar 202200:12:13

We don't just wake up one day and find ourselves in menopause. It's a natural sequence of hormonal events that happen in the 5-10 years BEFORE menopause.  Some of us won't even know,  most of us will find some subtle changes and for others it will impact their day to day life. All women have a different experience and the good news is, it does NOT last forever.  As our hormones change, so do our symptoms.

You don't want to miss:

  • Why perimenopause isn't diagnosed by a blood test and what signs and symptoms will tell you
  • How you can still going through perimenopause, even if you're not having periods due to a hysterectomy or an ablation, or have a mirena or you're on the pill

I am on this hormonal journey with you! With half a thyroid and my own experience of burnout or adrenal fatigue means that I get it! Not that my experience is the same as yours, but I understand the frustrations of trying to figure out what is going on and not being heard by medical professionals because I didn't fit into the box!

I am pleased to say at 50, my energy is fantastic, I'm back to the same weight I was at 40. My thyroid is manageable and while my adrenals can be a little cranky from time to time, I recognise the signs and know I need to listen to those whispers… because ladies, if you don't listen to the whispers, eventually they will turn into screams!

In this episode, you don't want to miss:

  • My personal hormonal rollercoaster – which will be different from yours, but I know what it feels like to be told everything's "normal" when I knew it really wasn't!

112: What Should I Wear?02 Apr 202400:28:36

When you feel confident, you emit a positive energy that people are naturally drawn to. Feeling confident in yourself is NOT about having the perfect body or putting your life on hold until after you get around to losing that 10kg.

Our guest today firmly believes you don't have to have the perfect body to have STYLE.

Ohh YESSS!

This episode is for every one of us who has had a "moment" standing in front of our wardrobes wondering what on earth we are going to wear.

Our guest is the fabulous Jane Mow, a Personal Brand Stylist and Style Coach for women.

Jane's ethos is what you wear is your business card. When you dress in a way that aligns with your personal style, you feel confident and self assured, which shines through in the way you show up in the world.

Our bodies change across the different seasons of our life but this doesn't mean our personal style has to change. Short. Curvy. Tall. Wide. Narrow. Broad Shoulders. Stubborn tummy. Mummy-weight. Menopause.

Jane's belief is that everyone has the potential to be stylish. So if you're done hiding under the baggy clothes, you can't miss this episode!

Jane's years of experience helps women take the stress out of getting dressed each day by helping you create a wardrobe filled only with pieces aligned with your unique Personal Style and Lifestyle.

The result? There's none of this, "ugh, what should I wear?" every time you get dressed.

Instead, it sounds like "OOOoh, which items should I wear today?"

Who's ready to feel fabulous??!!

111: Signs and Symptoms of Perimenopause26 Mar 202400:13:18

I'm constantly being asked a LOT of questions about perimenopause... so if you're experiencing changes in your body that leave you feeling confused and overwhelmed, you aren't alone.

Perimenopause isn't a sudden occurrence; it's more like a reverse puberty, spanning anywhere from two to ten years. During this time, hormonal fluctuations can lead to various symptoms, including anxiety, disrupted sleep, heavier periods, allergies, hot flashes, and brain fog.

In today's episode of The Hormone Hub we look at why blood tests are not the best indicator of where your hormones are at, and why you need to pay attention to the signs and symptoms - even if you don't have a regular period!

We look at…

🍷 The Sobering Truth
Alcohol Use Disorder in women in their 40s and 50s has skyrocketed by over 80% in the past 30 years. These aren't necessarily women pouring vodka on their Cornflakes. Often these are high functioning women, who are self medicating as a coping strategy.

🚺 Age, Alcohol, and Menopause
As we age, our body's ability to metabolise alcohol changes, impacting our menopause journey more than we realise. Women in their 40s and 50s are hitting the bottle more than ever, and it's time we talk about the real effects this has on our health.

🥂 The Culture of Cheers
Regular drinking has become a norm, but at what cost? We're discussing the specific health risks women face from significant alcohol consumption and why it's time for a cultural shift.

💡 Creating a Life You Adore, Sans Alcohol
Imagine a life where you wake up every day feeling clear, focused, and energised. We're demolishing the myth that life without alcohol is dull and shining a light on the vibrant reality that awaits.

👯 Navigating Social Waters
The pressure to partake in a drink can be overwhelming. We're arming you with strategies to stand your ground and stay true to your sober journey, without losing connections.

🎉 The Sober Glow
Hear Lauren's experience of saying goodbye to alcohol. The benefits are boundless, from enhanced energy to deeper sleep and beyond.

This episode is more than just a podcast; it's a lifeline for anyone feeling alone in their struggle with alcohol, a celebration of the sober curious, and encouragement for those thinking of an alcohol-free future.

#124 When Your Body Sends You Messages (And You're Not Sure You Want to Listen)27 Mar 202600:10:08

I had one of those "right… okay then" moments this week.

Within 24 hours:
• Skin cancer check revealed a barnacle
• Prescribed bifocal glasses
• Bowel screening test arrived in the mail

And I just sat there thinking…
Is this what we're doing now?

It was a bit of a wake-up call.
Not in a dramatic way.
Just that quiet realisation that things are shifting.

And if I'm honest… I know so many of you are feeling the same.

You're doing all the right things.

But:
You're waking exhausted
Your sleep is off
Your energy isn't what it used to be
Your body just feels different

So in this podcast episode, I talk about:
• Why your body starts sending these signals
• Why sleep is often the first thing to unravel
• What actually helps (without overhauling your life)
• And what I'm working on next to help you fix it

This is just the beginning of a deeper conversation we need to have.
Because this isn't random.
And it's not something you just have to "put up with."

106: Healing from Trauma22 Feb 202400:26:03

Some conversations are hard. They are crucial but often swept under the rug. Joining me today is Tina from the Blue Butterfly Institute, a true survivor and beacon of strength.

Tina has spent the last seven years consciously healing from childhood sexual trauma and domestic violence. It's a subject we tend to shy away from, but it's time to change that.

At the Blue Butterfly Institute, Tina and her team provide invaluable resources and support for survivors of sexual trauma, regardless of age or gender. From support groups to individual counselling, they offer a safe haven for healing and growth.

In our conversation, Tina sheds light on the common struggles survivors face, from weight struggles through to autoimmune disorders. Through her own experiences and those of her clients, Tina emphasizes the importance of acknowledging trauma and finding support.

If you're looking for a safe space to explore healing and connect with others who understand, I encourage you to check out The Cocoon Podcast and the Blue Butterfly Institute. Tina's dedication to supporting survivors is truly commendable, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to share her story with you.

Thank you for tuning in, and remember, you're never alone on your journey to healing.

Big love,
Kylie x

Did you know that up to 8% of women have their final period by age 45?

We also discuss the challenges of diagnosing menopause in younger women, the nuances of conditions like premature ovarian insufficiency (POI), and the various factors that can influence whether you'll experience menopause earlier than expected.

For those navigating POI or early menopause and hoping to start a family, we touch on options such as hormone therapies and alternative pathways to parenthood, such as IVF and surrogacy.

We also highlight the importance of mental and emotional health during this transition and offer practical advice for self-care and seeking support. Discover how menopause can be both a challenging journey and an empowering new chapter in your life.

Episode 102: Viva La Vulva09 Feb 202400:24:37

Gynaecological cancers include cervical, ovarian, uterine, vaginal, vulvar, fallopian tube and placental cancers.

As with any cancer, early detection and awareness is the key to a better health outcome.

Today on The Hormone Hub, we speak with Kath Mazzella OAM, who is a 30year vulvar cancer survivor. Kath shares her experience and the work she has tirelessly been doing to bring awareness and break down the stigmas of gynaecological health.

Starting with... using the anatomically correct terminology.
There's more to it than a vagina.

The vulva is the global term that describes all the structures that make external female genitalia. Which includes the mons pubis, labia majora, labia minora, clitoris, vestibular bulbs, vulva vestibule, Bartholin's glands, Skene's glands, urethra, and vaginal opening.

You know your body better than anyone, so if you're experiencing symptoms that are unusual, please get it medically checked...

What's NOT normal...

Abnormal or persistent vaginal bleeding – such as bleeding after menopause, bleeding that is not part of menstrual periods, or bleeding after sex

Unusual vaginal discharge (if it's ongoing ask for a swab!)
Pain, pressure or discomfort in the abdomen
Swelling of the abdomen
Change in bowel or bladder habits
Pain during sex
Weight loss
Itching, burning or soreness in the vulva
Lumps, sores or wart-like growths

There are a number of conditions that may cause these symptoms, but please see your doctor as early detection is always best.

Viva La Vulva!

#123 The Hormone Hub Podcast Is Back: Why I Took a Break and What's Coming Next25 Mar 202600:12:07

The Hormone Hub Podcast Is Back!

After recording more than 120 episodes, I stepped away from the podcast for nearly two years.

And today… we're officially back.

In this first episode, I wanted to start with an honest conversation about why I took a break, what's changed, and why these conversations matter now more than ever.

The Problem Women Are Facing Right Now

When I first started working in this space back in 2017, hardly anyone was talking about perimenopause.

Now?

It's everywhere.

And while that's a good thing… it's also created a new problem:
Information overload.

Women are being told to:
Eat massive amounts of protein
Try the latest menopause supplement
Train harder
Follow extreme protocols
Completely overhaul their lifestyle

And when those things don't work, women often assume they're the problem.

But the truth is much simpler.

There's nothing "wrong" with you, you're evolving.

If nutrition feels confusing right now, I've created something to help.
