Chris’ ability to present analogies that make even the hardest concepts easily digestible make this conversation entertaining and thought provoking. Join us on this journey to understand why schools were created, what purpose they serve, and what kids really need to know by age 18.

#10: Online Options for Homeschool- When the School System Is Your Employer and Your Child's Educator, But You've Had Enough15 Apr 202300:53:19

Laura joins us this week from New York where she is a mom of three and a teacher. Laura was employed at the school her children attended, but recently left this position because of the radical agendas being pushed upon both the students and the teachers. Laura's youngest was no longer happy at school, so she pulled him and enrolled him in an online school, The Keystone School, where he has flourished.

The Keystone School offers a flexible online learning environment for grades K-12. Laura explains how her son is able to get his coursework done and still manage to attend snowboarding school in Vermont for the winter season. Programs like this really let us see that kids don't need to be at a desk for 6+ hours a day!

I loved hearing about this schooling option, I think this will be a saving grace for working families who don't want their kids indoctrinated by the school system- but don't have the time to sit with their kids one on one to teach.

As more options for homeschooling arise, we as parents become more empowered. This podcast is meant to empower YOU! Thank you to everyone who tunes in for this week's show! Also- thank you to everyone who listened to my episode of Tin Foil Hat with Sam Tripoli! I loved reading everyone's comments and emails! #9: One Mom's Journey: From Not Fitting In to Pioneering a New Path Forward07 Apr 202300:44:50

Rachel joins us today from New Jersey. She started her son in public school but after he was diagnosed with special needs, she found herself trying to help the teachers more than the teachers were helping her son. Rachel pulled her son from school and began the homeschooling process.

Sadly, Rachel discovered that she and her son felt out of place within the homeschooling community. Playgroups had cliques among the kids and adults and the experience was not as welcoming as she had hoped, especially with her new baby in tow.

So, Rachel started her own group with a focus on making every person feel as though they "fit in".  The group quickly expanded to over 30 families. Rachel leads projects in Art, Science, and Math weekly, with a goal of expanding out to other counties and states in the future. #8: From Unschooling Her Boys to Creating an Online Adventure Education Community- This is Tiya's Story01 Apr 202300:46:05

Tiya joins us from Florida, where she used the unschooling approach with her two boys from the very beginning. Learning through exploration and sensory activities were the main components to the education of Tiya's sons. Once the boys reached high school, they wanted to enroll in a mainstream education through a local private school. Once there, Tiya expanded her love of homeschooling and helped create the Inner Bliss Sanctuary, an online support community for homeschooling families with an emphasis on adventure education.
I loved talking with Tiya because she makes you want to throw your curriculum books out the window and get your hands dirty with some good ol' fashioned fun. She brings a spark to learning that gets you excited about the journey you are embarking on. Talking with someone at the other end of the spectrum, as her boys are 6'4" and driving now- it is a breath of fresh air to know we don't have to worry about worksheets, flash cards and reading by a certain age. Check out Tiya's website and click on Community to find out more!

#6: A Mom Who Was Homeschooled Herself: What She Does Differently When Homeschooling Her Kids and What She Warns Homeschooling Parents About17 Mar 202300:40:51

Keiva joins us today from Vermont. She was homeschooled as a child and is now a mom of six. Her older children attended private school but because of severe bullying, she brought them home to homeschool. Keiva tells us of her experience as a homeschooled student in a small town and gives a warning to other parents currently homeschooling their kids.
We discuss the opportunities allotted to homeschoolers in Vermont, and possibly in your state as well, that are not generally known about. Keiva discusses how she gave up her business to care for her children, but how she has since created another business of her own.
We talk about the lack of students getting into the trades and how places like the career development center are not utilized enough. Keiva explains how her son entered a competition through Skills USA and won many scholarships- another underutilized resource.

Chai joins me, Cheryl, to weave her tale of teaching her kids outside the conventional classroom. Together, we debunk the myth that you need a backyard chicken coop to successfully educate your children at home, and instead, we champion the power of intentionality and the treasure troves of community resources like libraries and museums.

We often hear about the rigidity of school bells and schedules, but what if learning could dance to the rhythm of a child's innate curiosity? Our conversation illuminates the homeschooling landscape where play and spontaneity are as integral to learning as literacy and math. We're not shying away from traditional schools either; we discuss the strategic chess move that is transitioning back to formal education when it best suits a child's journey, proving that education is not a one-way street.

Navigating the homeschooling waters can be tricky, but I'm throwing you a lifeline in our latest episode. Whether you're a seasoned homeschooler or just considering the plunge, join us for an honest look at the flexibility, challenges, and profound rewards that come with taking the helm of your child's education.

#64: A Teacher's Insight to How Funding Affects the Classroom, Who is Really Benefitting, and Why She Left Teaching to Homeschool27 Apr 202400:54:24

Embark on a transformative journey through the world of education with me, Cheryl, as I host a compelling discussion with Kiri Jorgensen, a former public school teacher turned homeschooling enthusiast. Kiri shares her eye-opening experiences and the pivotal moments that led her from the front of a traditional classroom to the heart of her own home's learning environment. We unpack the challenges posed by the public education system, from the limitations of Common Core to the critical need for individualized student attention – a stark contrast to the one-size-fits-all approach that's become all too common.

Our dialogue takes a turn toward the perplexing world of public school funding, where I draw from my government background to reveal the bureaucratic pitfalls that leave teachers and students wanting. We critique the structure that often props up administration at the expense of classroom resources, and touch upon books like the Tuttle Twins series, highlighting their role in guiding our youth with literature that resonates with family values. It's a conversation that brings to light the struggles and the paradoxes faced by educators and families alike, questioning whether the current system truly serves our children's best interests.
