Stopping in each of the cities of the northern mahla coast, Radulf expands on the region and his plans for the future. Traveling north east from the Wetwood, tended by the Woods Witch Gudrun, Red finds himself at Nistrad keep, a strategic linchpin for the Northern Orthodox nation of Kemovek. Here Red learns of a strange custom among the nobility: intentional self infection with a mutagenic virus to prolong their lives, however it would seem the Lord's son's genetics carry with them a curious reaction to this otherwise lifesaving panacea.
