| Ep. 229: Reparenting 101: Healing Your Inner Child From Mother Hunger | 29 Aug 2024 | 00:52:41 | |
Have you ever felt like something was missing from your childhood, even if everything seemed fine on the surface? You’re not alone. Many of us carry wounds from our early years, often rooted in what’s called "mother hunger"—the deep, often unfulfilled need for nurturing, protection, and guidance from our mothers. When those needs aren’t met, it can leave us feeling incomplete, even as adults.
I asked Cybele Botran, a Professional Certified Coach, and a Mother Hunger® Trained Facilitator to walk us through the need for protection, nurturance and guidance we all have in childhood and the primary attachment wound that is created when those needs aren't met.
She also shares how to take care of our own emotional needs, as adults, in the way a loving parent would, without placing blame on primary caregivers and practical ways to do reparenting and inner child work in the healing process.

| Ep. 228: How To Enjoy An Awesome Sober Vacation With Friends | 22 Aug 2024 | 01:22:58 | |
What do you want to know about sober travel? I just got back from Provence, where I spent two weeks with 3 sober girlfriends and we’re here to share everything you need to know to plan and enjoy an awesome sober vacation.
Provence is a beautiful area of France known for its small hilltop villages, river valleys, markets, food, lavender and wine. All the wine. They’ve made wine for 2,600 years and have over 600 producers in the region.
But don’t let that scare you off! Even in an area famous for alcohol, you can travel alcohol-free and enjoy your trip so much more than you would if you were drinking.
On this sober vacation I traveled with 3 girlfriends I met in sobriety. My friend Ingrid and I are both 8 years alcohol-free, Margaret is 7 years alcohol-free and Megan is 5 years sober.
The 4 of us all met in sobriety, through various groups and podcasts and retreats and friends and decided to explore a region typically known for wine, alcohol-free and had the most fantastic time together.

| Ep. 219: Should I Take A Break From Drinking? Look For These Signs To Know It’s Time | 20 Jun 2024 | 01:01:44 | |
Have you been thinking about taking a break from drinking, only to decide that you’re “not that bad”?
Most women who wonder if they’re drinking too much can look around and find lots of reasons why it’s not a “real issue”.
We’ve been told that having a problem with alcohol is black or white. Either you fall into the category of someone who is “an alcoholic” or who has a “drinking problem", or you don’t.
But in truth binge drinking among women has become so normalized that it’s easy to dismiss any worries you have about your alcohol consumption by looking at friends and family members who drink like you do.
A lot of women fall into a category known as “gray area drinking” where your drinking falls between the extremes of having negative consequences from alcohol consumption and being able to take it or leave it on occasion.
You don’t have to have a drinking problem to decide that drinking isn’t helping you be your best self. And you don’t need to be an alcoholic to benefit from a longer period of time alcohol-free.

| Ep. 129: Changing An Unhealthy Drinking Culture At Work | 29 Sep 2022 | 01:04:53 | |
What does an unhealthy drinking culture at work look like?
Is drinking a company-organized activity? Are company events centered around alcohol?
Are new employees taken out for drinks, team bonding gatherings hosted at a bar or holiday parties at a winery?
Is drinking normalized as a coping mechanism for stress at work? Do you hear colleagues discussing “needing a drink” after a tough day or being hungover on a Monday morning?
Is alcohol the reward for a job well done? Are champagne bottles left on desks after a big project or alcohol brought in to toast to a big win?
Is alcohol available in the office or brought in for social events during office hours? Is “Beer on Tap” a company perk or is there a weekly happy hour in the office on Fridays?
Are you expected to take clients out drinking as part of the job?
Do you feel pressure to drink at company events or do people throw around the phrase “Work Hard. Play Hard” to describe the company culture?
If you have an unhealthy drinking culture at work, the good news is that there are steps that you can take to change it, navigate drinking events at work alcohol-free and access support if you’re trying to change your relationship with alcohol.
Tessa Lowe is here to help. She’s an ex-wine mom that hit her own personal rock bottom in December of 2020 and now works with both individuals and employers to help create both personal and organizational change.

| Ep. 128: How To Be OK When Things Are Not OK | 22 Sep 2022 | 01:02:30 | |
In the book, Big Feelings: How To Be Okay When Things Are Not Okay, Liz Fosslien and her co-author, Mollie West Duffy, examine the seven emotions that are especially hard to overcome: self-doubt, comparison, and anger, as well as burnout, perfectionism, despair, and regret.
And these are emotions most of us never talk about. Instead, we move through life wondering “What’s wrong with me?” and “Why can’t I handle this like everyone else?”.
The truth is that most women are struggling with these emotions too, quietly and alone, just like you.

| Ep. 127: Why High-Achieving Women Struggle To Set Boundaries | 15 Sep 2022 | 01:08:25 | |
High-achieving women can struggle to set boundaries. If you’re managing an endless to-do list and many responsibilities you likely have a tendency to over-deliver, over-give, people please and ignore your own needs instead of setting strong boundaries.
While you may get positive reinforcement from doing all the things for all the people (especially by those who benefit from your over-giving like your boss, colleagues, spouse, kids, family and friends), having poor boundaries is a recipe for burnout (and over drinking).
In fact, high-achieving women often suffer from perfectionism, imposter syndrome, self-doubt, anxiety and the inability to set healthy boundaries with others.
Creating healthy boundaries is an important skill to master as you’re quitting drinking and yet it’s something that many women who struggle with alcohol find difficult.
So I invited Terri Cole to join me on The Hello Someday Podcast to talk about how you can become a boundary boss and honor your own needs and desires.

| Ep. 126: How Family And Friends Can Support Your Sobriety | 08 Sep 2022 | 01:26:32 | |
Once you’ve decided to stop drinking it is incredibly helpful to get your family and friends on board to support your sobriety.
Your loved ones have the ability to make a number of easy changes and small adjustments to support your sobriety and make it so much easier for you to successfully and happily navigate life alcohol-free.
Your social and physical environment can either be a safe space for you in a boozy world or a source of triggers and temptations.
One problem you may encounter as you start to change your relationship with alcohol is that often your family and friends have no idea how to support your sobriety. They may unknowingly say or do things that undermine your resolve or sabotage your progress.
Or some of your family and friends may not want you to stop drinking at all because they also have a complicated relationship with alcohol and fear that your sobriety might impact their own ability to drink.

| Ep. 125: The Best TV Shows and Movies About Addiction and Recovery | 01 Sep 2022 | 00:58:27 | |
If you’re searching for the best TV shows and movies about addiction and recovery, which realistically depict the nuances, emotions, strengths and struggles of walking away from an addictive substance, they can be hard to find.
When you’re scrolling through broadcast TV, Netflix or Hulu you’ll find that most shows and movies glamorize alcohol and depict it as essential for a good time.
In fact you can find hundreds of powerful, compelling, heartwarming, heartbreaking and funny TV shows and movies about addiction and recovery that will inspire you to change and remind you that you are not alone.
I asked Alysse Bryson, Founder of the Sober Curator, a resource for those seeking content related to recovery or a zero-proof lifestyle, to join me to share the best TV shows and movies about addiction and recovery.

| Ep. 124: Why Is Moderating Alcohol So Hard? | 25 Aug 2022 | 01:05:57 | |
Moderating alcohol is likely your ultimate goal if you’re worried about how much you're drinking on a regular basis.
You probably don’t want to stop drinking completely, but rather you want to cut back, drink less, drink less often or (what I hear most) you want to “drink like a normal person”.
And yet most people who love to drink find it incredibly hard to moderate how much alcohol we consume.
Often we’re able to take a week off, a month off, a few months or not drink at all while pregnant or breastfeeding, but somehow, regardless of how many rules we make, we’ll eventually find ourselves back to consuming more alcohol than we meant to or want to.
The truth is that moderation is an elusive goal that is incredibly hard to achieve for people who have struggled with drinking too much or too often. And it’s because alcohol is an addictive drug. By taking the drug (alcohol) the substance creates the need for another dose (and you drink again).
So let’s talk about moderation and why it’s hard to moderate your alcohol consumption.

| Ep. 123: The Advertising of Alcohol To Women | 18 Aug 2022 | 00:59:48 | |
Alcohol advertising spending is set to hit 6 billion dollars in 2023 with the advertising of alcohol to women as a key industry focus for the last 60 years.
On the podcast today we’re talking about the advertising of alcohol to women with Jean Kilbourne. Jean is internationally recognized for her groundbreaking work on the image of women in advertising and for her critical studies of alcohol and tobacco advertising.
In her film, Deadly Persuasion, Jean exposes the manipulative marketing strategies and tactics used by the tobacco and alcohol industries to keep Americans hooked on their products.
The goal of alcohol advertisers is to sell more than beverages.

| Ep. 122: My Diary of Early Sobriety From Day 60 to Day 100 Alcohol-Free | 11 Aug 2022 | 01:33:25 | |
Hitting 100 days of sobriety is a huge milestone to be celebrated.
In your first 30 days sober you might struggle with poor sleep and cravings to drink. It’s common to feel incredibly tired in your first month sober, irritated and rageful. You’re going through physical withdrawal from an addictive substance in a world where it’s all around you.
In your second month of sobriety, you’ll feel much better physically, emotionally and mentally. The days will pass more quickly and you’ll develop other interests and habits that aren’t centered around alcohol. You’ll sleep better and have more energy and feel more optimistic.
Once you pass the 60 Day sobriety milestone and move to 100 Days alcohol-free you’ll be stronger and more confident in your decision to not drink. Talking to people about how you feel now that you’re not drinking will be easier. And people around you will notice the physical changes in your face, skin and body now that you’re not ingesting ethanol on a regular basis.
Today, I'm sharing my diary of early sobriety from Day 60 to Day 100 through the emails I wrote to my sober coach each day.

| Ep. 121: Burnout: To Unlocking The Stress Cycle with Amelia Nagoski | 04 Aug 2022 | 01:18:03 | |
Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle by Amelia and Emily Nagoski is a book for every woman who has felt overwhelmed and exhausted by everything she has to do, and yet is still worried that she’s not doing enough. Which basically describes every woman I know.
As an ex-red wine girl, the first story of a woman experiencing burnout felt all too familiar.
Amelia and Emily describe Julie, a middle school teacher whose “burnout had reached an intensity where merely the anticipation of the start of the first semester had activated a level of dread that left her reaching for the box of Chardonnay by 2pm”. They note, “Nobody likes to think of their kids’ middle school teacher as burned out, embittered, and day-drinking, but she’s not alone.”

| Ep. 120: Rediscovering Creativity in Sobriety | 28 Jul 2022 | 00:59:46 | |
There is a quiet time in early sobriety, after you get through the really hard first weeks, and before alcohol-free life is your new normal. The days and evenings may feel long and you might not know quite what to do with your time.
Over time drinking can become an activity, entertainment and a hobby.
My guest today is Jess Steitzer @decidelydry and she’s here to talk about why rediscovering creativity in sobriety can increase your happiness and strengthen your recovery.

| Ep. 218: How To Transform Your Home To Reduce Triggers To Drink and Support Your Sobriety | 13 Jun 2024 | 01:06:22 | |
Is your home set up to support your sobriety or sabotage your efforts to lead an alcohol-free life?
If you’re used to opening a bottle of wine the minute you walk in the door, having a cocktail on the back deck or curling up on the couch with your laptop or netflix after the kids go to bed, your home environment can be a powerful trigger to drink.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. The way you live and design your environment can make it harder or easier to be alcohol-free. And especially in early sobriety you need to build a sober bubble.
When I quit drinking, in order to build my sober bubble I needed to remove all the wine from my house.
I also needed to create a sober sanctuary where I could retreat to after dinner. A place to support a new evening routine that didn’t include drinking on my couch after the kids went to bed.
So I spent some time making my bedroom a place that sparked joy and supported peace and calm in the evenings.
I created a space that supported my new alcohol-free lifestyle. One in which I took care of my body and myself.
Simple changes can reduce cravings to drink and create a nurturing space for self care and sobriety.
I asked Caroline Thor, a KonMari® Consultant and the host of the Living Clutter Free Forever podcast, to share how you can create a home that supports your ideal alcohol-free lifestyle.

| Ep. 119: Recovery Is The New Black | 21 Jul 2022 | 01:08:17 | |
Is recovery the new black? Is sober becoming the new cool?
With the rise in the sober-curious movement, Dry January and Sober October, sober influencers and the growth in the non-alcoholic drinks movement it seems like sobriety is all the rage.
Articles in the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Forbes and stories on The Today Show and in wellness and fashion magazines are increasingly referencing “the sober curious movement” - the rise of people experimenting with sobriety for mental and physical health reasons and do not consider themselves addicted to a substance.
Michelle Smith of Recovery Is The New Black has joined me to talk about the growth in the “sober curious is cool'' movement.

| Ep. 118: How To Be A Mindful Drinker | 14 Jul 2022 | 01:00:04 | |
What does it mean to be a “mindful drinker”?
Mindful drinking is about becoming more aware of how your body and mind are affected by alcohol, and how you use alcohol to relate to the people around you.
Mindful drinkers notice, learn and ultimately take control of their drinking.
Today I'm welcoming Laura Willoughby, the co-founder of Club Soda, the mindful drinking movement.
Club Soda’s mission is to make mindful drinking widely accepted so that everyone feels confident to change their drinking habits if they want to and to make sure that people who aren’t drinking alcohol are just as comfortable as drinkers who are, especially in social spaces where alcohol is served.

| Ep. 117: The Problem With Using Alcohol To Joke About Parenting | 07 Jul 2022 | 00:54:26 | |
It’s time to stop using alcohol to joke about parenting.
If you look up for a minute you’ll see the wine mom humor all around you. On birthday cards at grocery stores, on cute hand towels and wood signs in home decor shops and everywhere on Etsy. “They Whine. I Wine”, “Mom’s Reasons To Drink: My 3 Kids”, “Mommy’s Sippy Cup”, “Mom Juice”, “It takes a village and a vineyard”, “This mom runs on coffee, wine and Amazon Prime”...
Funny, right? Or not so much.
My guest today is Blair Sharp. Blair wrote An Open Letter to Molly Sims: Please Stop Using Alcohol To Joke About Parenting. She’s here to talk about why the wine mom culture and #iwinesohard “drinking while parenting is funny” shtick normalizes binge drinking and relying on alcohol as a coping tool for motherhood to dangerous results.

| Ep. 116: Perimenopause, Burnout & Alcohol | 30 Jun 2022 | 01:09:43 | |
If you’re a woman in your 40s you’re likely both moving into perimenopause hormonally and also navigating one of the busiest times of your life.
If you’re also using alcohol to ease the symptoms of burnout and perimenopause the combination can lead to a vicious cycle of heightened anxiety and physical and emotional exhaustion.
You might notice that the symptoms of perimenopause are similar to those of alcohol withdrawal and burnout.
In fact, alcohol can intensify the more severe symptoms of anxiety and depression experienced in perimenopause. Drinking alcohol also disturbs sleep and women who drink daily are much more likely to experience hot flashes and night sweats.
The good news is that if you’re experiencing perimenopause symptoms you’re not alone and you can tap into better ways to cope than drinking through it.
My guest today is Wendy McCallum, LLB. Wendy is a Burnout and Alcohol Coach & Wellness Expert and the host of the Bite-Sized Balance Podcast. She’s here to share the many different paths to recovery from burnout, recovery from alcohol and for moving through perimenopause with more ease and less stress.

| Ep. 115: Love, Sex, Intimacy, Attachment Styles & Relationships In Recovery | 23 Jun 2022 | 00:50:56 | |
What’s your approach to sex, love and relationships? Do you feel anxiety when you’re in a relationship or avoid intimacy?
Do you trust easily or cling to your partner? Do you struggle to communicate your needs and fear rejection or push yourself to be overly self-reliant?
Many women drink to smooth the edges of our emotions around relationships, love, sex and intimacy.
In today's episode we’re digging into love, sex, intimacy, attachment styles and relationships in recovery.
My guest is Dufflyn Lammers, the go-to relationship expert for women in recovery.
We’re going to talk about the 4 primary attachment styles and strategies as well as how “earned secure attachment” can be developed in recovery.
Your attachment style, developed in childhood, tends to be the primary factor impacting your approach to relationships, love, sex, intimacy, your bodies and yourself.

| Ep. 114: Alcohol, Insomnia + Sleep In Sobriety | 16 Jun 2022 | 00:49:22 | |
What questions do you have about alcohol, insomnia and sleep in sobriety?
You might be wondering…
Does alcohol help you get to sleep?
What contributes to good sleep?
Why am I so tired in early sobriety?
What can I do if I can’t sleep early sobriety?
When will I start sleeping well after I stop drinking?
So here’s the big question: does alcohol help you sleep?
Nope. Alcohol is a sedative that makes you feel sleepy, but it actually significantly decreases your sleep quality (and leads directly to those awful 3am hangxiety wake ups).
In fact, a Sleep Foundation study found that for women less than one drink decreases your sleep quality by 9.3%, one drink decreases your sleep quantity by 24% and more than one drink decreases your sleep quality by 39.2%.

| Ep. 113: 20 NEW Questions To Ask Yourself About Your Drinking | 09 Jun 2022 | 01:16:50 | |
A lot of women who are worried about their drinking start asking themselves one question: “Am I an Alcoholic?”.
The questions that you typically find on an online “Am I An Alcoholic” Quiz are often the wrong questions. Ones that can keep you trapped in the drinking cycle for a long time.
The truth is that you don’t need to ask yourself if you’re an “alcoholic” or if you “really have a problem” or if your drinking is “bad enough” that you have to stop to change your relationship with alcohol.
My guest today is Deb Masner, founder of the Alcohol Tipping Point and host of The Alcohol Tipping Point Podcast.
Deb is going to take us through the 20 questions you should be asking yourself to change your drinking.

| Ep. 112: Create A Better Life Without Alcohol | 02 Jun 2022 | 00:58:39 | |
When you’re stopping drinking it’s pretty normal to focus on what you're giving because alcohol is involved in most of your social activities, hobbies and relationships.
When I was a ‘red wine girl’ alcohol was a part of cooking dinner, evenings on the couch, date nights, girls nights, work happy hours, Sunday brunches, afternoons at the ballpark, vacations and everything in between.
In order to create a better life without alcohol it’s important to add new things to your life that bring you peace, happiness and pleasure when you are removing alcohol.
Lori Massicot, midlife sobriety coach and host of the To 50 And Beyond Podcast, has joined me to talk about how to create a better life without alcohol, how to use your time away from alcohol as a period of discovery, why setting boundaries will help you find time to explore new hobbies, and so much more!

What should you expect after 30 days of sobriety? I recorded my diary of my first 30-Days alcohol-free (you can listen to it here), but what happens after that first month?
You probably have a lot of questions about what happens in your second month without alcohol. I know I did.
So I’ve recorded my diary of exactly how I felt, what I did, what was hard and what helped me keep going in my second month of sobriety. I hope it helps you.

| Ep. 108: Sober Awkward | 05 May 2022 | 01:02:18 | |
Is the fear of feeling awkward in social situations keeping you from trying sober life?
I get it. When I was stopped drinking I felt awkward in every part of my life - going to a bar and ordering a non-alcoholic drink, turning down a glass of wine at a friend house, making small talk at a work event without my social lubricant, telling people I wasn’t drinking and let’s not even talk about sober sex!
When you stop drinking it can be surprising to realize just how much you’ve relied on alcohol to navigate uncomfortable moments, conversations and social interactions (even with people you love and have known for years)!
But you can navigate sober life without feeling awkward - it just takes a bit of practice.
Today I'm talking with Victoria Vanstone, co-host of Australia's most popular sobriety podcast, Sober Awkward.
Vic is an alcohol free living advocate and passionate about helping others stuck in a pattern of normalized social binge drinking.

| Ep. 107: Living With A Partner Who Drinks When You’re Sober | 28 Apr 2022 | 01:17:23 | |
Today we're talking about living with a partner who drinks when you're sober.
Maybe your husband or partner is your drinking buddy and going to a bar or sharing drinks at the end of the day is the way you connect and celebrate.
Maybe your partner loves drinking too and is resistant to getting the alcohol out of the house.
Or perhaps your partner tells you that you “don’t really have a problem”, “are being too hard on yourself” or “should just cut back a bit”.
Maybe you don’t want your partner to know how worried you are about your drinking so you want to do this on your own and under the radar.
Or perhaps you’ve told your partner that you’re going to take a break from drinking before and then thrown in the towel on Day 5 or Week 2. You might be afraid to tell them you’re trying again because you’re worried you’re just going to fail.
Whatever your relationship with your partner is like, if you both drink it’s often deeply intertwined with alcohol.

| Ep. 106: Growing Pains: Releasing Your Past Identity As A Drinker | 21 Apr 2022 | 00:59:23 | |
What we drink and how we drink is often deeply intertwined with the image and personality we present to the world, and can also be a part of our own internal identity.
As Kristi Coulter wrote in her essay Enjoli, what we drink can be a shorthand for who we are…
“A woman with a single-malt scotch is bold and discerning and might fire you from her life if you fuck with her. A woman with a PBR is a Cool Girl who will not be shamed for belching. A woman drinking MommyJuice wine is saying she’s more than the unpaid labor she gave birth to.”
Drinking influences our relationships and interactions. It colors what we do, who we spend time with, what we tolerate and the types of boundaries we set (and often the ones we don’t set).
And, when you’re ready to stop drinking, there are growing pains related to releasing your past identity as a drinker, as well as relationships and behaviors that may no longer be serving you.
My guest today is Hailey Magee. She’s a Codependency Recovery Coach who helps individuals of all ages break the people-pleasing pattern, set empowered boundaries, and master the art of speaking their truth.

| Ep. 105: Midlife Evolution - Embrace Who You Are With The Work of Brené Brown | 14 Apr 2022 | 01:19:22 | |
Many women look up in midlife to realize that while their lives look really good on the outside they don’t feel that good on the inside.
They’re smart, capable, and productive and work hard everyday to accomplish a lot.
They take care of people, managing work deadlines and finances, business trips and family vacations, school conferences and day care pickups.
But they’re not as happy as they thought they would be.
They’re tired, pulled in a million directions, anxious, overwhelmed, accomplished but unfulfilled.
And often women in midlife are drinking too much to reward themselves for getting through it all at the end of the day.
The midlife unraveling can also be a time for transformation and evolution.
I asked Libby Nelson, a Professional Certified Coach who has trained in the work of Dr. Brené Brown and is a Certified Daring Way™ Facilitator, to join me to dive into how to let go of who you think you’re supposed to be and embrace who you really are through the work of Brené Brown.

| Ep. 104: How To Take Break From Drinking | 07 Apr 2022 | 01:05:01 | |
Taking a break from drinking can be as simple as unlearning a conditioned and ingrained behavior and approached and addressed without shame, blame or labels.
In fact, the social learning model suggests that drug and alcohol use are learned behaviors and that such behaviors persist because of reinforcement from others, your environment, your thoughts and feelings, and from the direct consequences of drug or alcohol use.
If you’re struggling to break the habit of drinking you are not required to describe yourself as an “alcoholic”, join a 12-Step program or attend AA meetings. Alcoholics Anonymous programs are one approach to stopping drinking, but not the only one.

| Ep. 103: Dialing Back Pandemic Drinking | 31 Mar 2022 | 00:54:23 | |
During the coronavirus pandemic, adults started reaching for the bottle more than ever. An increasing number of Americans responded to the stress, anxiety, isolation, loss and boredom of the pandemic by turning to alcohol. According to a Nielsen study, consumption of alcohol grew amongst adults over the age of 30 by 14% during the pandemic.
In 2020 there was a 41 percent increase in the number of days on which women drank heavily, and the rate of adults who reported drinking more to manage pandemic stress was more than twice as high for parents with children between the ages of 5 and 7 .
Excessive drinking and alcohol use is proven to negatively impact us in many ways: it can affect our ability to concentrate and get quality sleep. It can also exacerbate depression and anxiety (which is ironically why many people drink – to cope with these issues).
Today, we are talking about the backlash against the pandemic fueled surge in alcohol consumption.

| Ep. 102: Anger Management In Sobriety | 24 Mar 2022 | 01:03:15 | |
Anger (and the suppression of anger) can be a big trigger for women to drink in sobriety.
There’s a reason that people tell you to remember “HALT” when you’re removing alcohol from your life. HALT is an acronym for Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired, which are four of the most common stressors in recovery.
One of the most helpful skills you can learn when you’re quitting drinking is how to manage anger in a healthy way. Both navigating the intensity and effect anger has upon you, as well as how to understand and express your anger without stuffing it down.
Michelle Farris, a licensed Psychotherapist and Anger Management Specialist will help you develop tools and coping skills to understand and manage anger in sobriety. Michelle helps codependent people create healthy relationships without sacrificing their big hearts.

| Ep. 101: ADHD, Women & Alcohol | 17 Mar 2022 | 01:08:01 | |
Women with ADHD are creative, spontaneous, problem solvers, energetic and have the ability to focus intensely on a project or task. They are also more likely to drink heavily, become reliant on alcohol and are more sensitive to the effects of alcohol on their brains and bodies.
In fact, 25% of adults being treated for alcohol and substance use disorders are diagnosed with ADHD and alcohol abuse among people with ADHD is 5 to 10 times more common than it is in people without the condition.
As a woman with ADHD you may struggle to focus, be easily distracted, act impulsively, feel restless and have trouble relaxing and unwinding, and because of that the immediate effect of alcohol, you may feel the pull to drink heavily and have a more difficult time moderating alcohol.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a Neurodevelopmental disorder that impacts the brain which controls emotions, learning, self-control and memory.
Because of the link between women, ADHD and alcohol abuse I invited Hanna Forrest, an ADHD Specialist who works with neurodiverse adults and children, on the podcast to talk about why women with ADHD often struggle with alcohol and practical tools to manage ADHD while quitting drinking.

Annie Grace, the author of The Alcohol Experiment and This Naked Mind, has joined me on my 100th episode to shift your perspective on drinking so that you can gain control of alcohol and find freedom.
Her work has helped thousands of people understand the impact of alcohol on their lives and dispel widely held beliefs and misconceptions about the benefits of drinking, including that it helps you relax, sleep and connect.
Annie’s goal is to help you decide that alcohol is a substance that isn’t making your life better so that you’re able to walk away from alcohol painlessly, genuinely feeling that you no longer want or need to drink.

| Ep. 216: Why Emotional Sobriety Is Key to Navigating an Alcohol-Free Life | 30 May 2024 | 01:13:16 | |
When I was drinking I used alcohol to check out after a hard day, numb out from irritation and resentment, make the monotony of adulting less boring and as a reward to look forward to for getting through another week.
And when drinking left me with too many hangovers, sleepless nights and crushing anxiety I finally decided that I didn’t want to feel that way anymore and (slowly) pieced together 30, 60, 100, 180+ days alcohol-free.
It’s not easy, but it is pretty clear how to do the “sobriety” thing. When you don’t drink, you’re sober!
But in order to “stay” sober, learning how to practice emotional sobriety can keep you balanced and happy in an alcohol-free life.
Emotional sobriety is all about handling your emotions in a healthy, balanced way without turning to alcohol to cope with life’s challenges.
It’s really important for long-term recovery because ignoring your mental and emotional health can get you in a place where it’s really attractive to escape with alcohol.

| Ep. 99: Sober Celebrities | 03 Mar 2022 | 00:42:41 | |
Wondering which celebrities are sober and whether any of your favorite actors, musicians and models live alcohol-free?
You might be surprised by how many famous people have decided to quit drinking.
Personally, I love it when a celebrity comes out to say they've stopped drinking or are questioning the role that alcohol is playing in their lives because it normalizes living alcohol-free and disrupts the narrative that you have to drink to live an exciting, fun and glamorous life.
Sober celebrities who talk about their decision to stop drinking can start a larger conversation about alcohol and its role in our lives.
When you stop drinking it can feel lonely at times, especially in the early days when you might not know a lot of sober people, so knowing that cool, glamorous, famous people have also decided to ditch the booze can help you feel less alone.

| Ep. 98: Parenting Teens and Tweens Without The Drama | 24 Feb 2022 | 01:14:10 | |
Parenting teens and tweens can be a messy time that can bring joy, satisfaction, frustration, worry and a desire to drink to tune it all out.
It’s a time when kids are moving out of childhood and into adulthood, but they’re not there yet.
Kids in adolescence experience intense emotions, are wired for novelty seeking and start to prioritize peer relationships over parental ones.
Because of all of this parenting teenagers can be a personal growth and development workshop for the adults in their lives.
The behavior of teenagers can trigger strong emotional reactions in adults, often related more to something unhealed or not processed inside of us. We are triggered by the meaning we are assigning to the behavior, rather than the behavior itself.
My guest today, Casey O’Roarty, is here to give you the tools you need to navigate the rollercoaster of parenting your teen or tween without the drama.
Casey is a personal growth and development junkie, parent coach, and a positive discipline trainer specialized in working with adolescents.

| Ep. 97: Diary Of My First 30 Days Sober | 17 Feb 2022 | 01:19:04 | |
What are your first 30 days without alcohol like? What parts are hard and when do you start feeling good? Here's my diary of my first 30 days sober, which turned into 6 years alcohol-free.
Tomorrow, February 18, I am hitting 6 years alcohol-free! I can’t believe I haven’t had a sip of alcohol but it's also just another day because not drinking isn't hard anymore. It's the way I live my life. It's my new normal. And it has actually been that way for a long time.
The truth is, without alcohol I have met some of the most incredible people and I have had some amazing experiences. It's made me more grounded, more content, less anxious, more brave and more secure in my life.
I thought I'd share with you my side of my story through the emails I wrote Belle because I want you to hear the shaky early days of what turned into six years alcohol-free. And at the time, I didn't think I could make it 100 days without drinking.

| Ep. 96: Alcohol-Free Life: How To Live Happy, Healthy And Sober | 10 Feb 2022 | 00:55:37 | |
There are a lot of benefits to choosing an alcohol-free life, but how do you make it a positive choice that you can maintain once the novelty has worn off?
Janey Lee Grace, the host of the Alcohol-Free Life podcast, is here to share the secrets of why to ditch the booze and live happy, healthy and sober.
As a former gray-area drinker, Janey used to wake up at 3 am hating herself for drinking too much, until the ‘wine witch’ came calling at 6 pm the next day and it started all over again.
In 2018 she ditched the booze for ‘Dry January’ and never looked back.
Now Janey is a leading voice in changing the conversation around alcohol. She’s the host of the Alcohol-Free Life podcast, founder of The Sober Club, a UK-based BBC presenter, and author of the book, Happy Healthy Sober: Ditch the booze and take control of your life.
If you've quit the booze, are sober curious, or thinking about reducing your alcohol intake, tune in as Casey and Janey take a look at the issues around alcohol to inspire you to be happy, healthy and sober!

| Ep. 95: Making Marriage Work After Quitting Drinking | 03 Feb 2022 | 01:16:12 | |
How do you make marriage work after quitting drinking?
Most marriages have some common patterns and habits that can make or break the relationship. Problematic patterns can be exacerbated when you’re in the drinking cycle and new habits can be helpful once you stop drinking and your relationship is adjusting to a new normal.
Because we use alcohol as a coping mechanism, a way to suppress negative emotions, and a tool to connect with the people around us, there is a learning curve to making marriage work after quitting drinking.
Even if you have a strong and happy relationship it’s common to feel defensive, resentful, misunderstood, unappreciated, isolated, secretive or lonely when you’re struggling to moderate your drinking.
And once you’ve stopped drinking it’s normal to go through a phase where you wonder if you and your spouse know how to communicate or have anything in common.

| Ep. 94: Sobriety, Growth & Personal Development | 27 Jan 2022 | 00:54:24 | |
What if drinking isn’t the problem but rather a symptom of the problem?
What if it’s masking the deeper personal development work you need to do?
What if instead of being a solution, alcohol is sapping your confidence, exacerbating your anxiety and making it harder to connect with others?
What if you’re drinking because of fear, limiting beliefs, not feeling good enough, an inability to set healthy boundaries, needing to heal past trauma or break unhealthy patterns?
What if removing alcohol could be the first step in growing, changing and returning to yourself?
My guest today is Veronica Valli. She’s an author and co-host of the popular podcast, Soberful. With 20 years of experience as a recovery coach and psychotherapist, Veronica has helped thousands of women stop drinking alcohol and transform their lives.

| Ep.93: Diet Culture, Disordered Eating + How To Stop Fighting Food | 20 Jan 2022 | 01:23:06 | |
Diet culture is everywhere.
NPR reported that in 2021, 50% of all New Year's resolutions in the U.S. were based on fitness, 48% were resolutions to lose weight and 39% of resolutions were to improve one’s diet. We spend over $30 billion on diet products annually and an estimated 45 million Americans diet every year.
85% of women have, at one point in their life, been on some kind of a diet, struggled with body image, or both.
And many women who struggle with alcohol also have a complicated relationship with food and their bodies.
Our universal immersion in diet culture can also unconsciously sabotage our efforts to stop drinking. When removing alcohol many women worry that they’ll ‘transfer their addiction to food or sugar’ or try to diet at the same time they are working to stop drinking.
I invited Isabel Foxen to come on the podcast to talk about diet culture, the socialization of women to believe that being thin equals being healthy, attractive, disciplined and worthy, and the impact of it all.
Isabel is a thought leader in intuitive eating and body positive movement and the creator of Stop Fighting Food, a video training series and masterclass for women who want to stop feeling crazy around food.
After years of trying to overcome binge eating disorder through weight normative approaches, Isabel discovered the critical role of acceptance, surrender, and social inquiry into binge eating and the recovery process, and has been sharing her insights with clients and professionals ever since.

| Ep. 92: Are You Sober Curious? | 13 Jan 2022 | 01:06:51 | |
What does it mean to be “sober curious”?
If you’re “sober curious” you likely aren’t sure that you want to give up alcohol forever, but you might wonder if your life would be better without alcohol. Maybe you recognize that alcohol is taking up a significant amount of your time, energy and focus. You wish you were more intentional about your drinking. Or your intuition might be telling you that alcohol isn’t serving you.
If you’re sober curious, you’re far from alone. In 2021 23% of Americans who drink regularly participated in Dry January, a month when you abstain from consuming any alcohol for 31 days.
To learn more about the sober curious movement I invited Ruby Warrington to join me on the podcast. She’s the author of the books Sober Curious and The Sober Curious Reset and coined the term sober curious.
Ruby’s honest and non-judgemental approach to reevaluating our relationship with alcohol has spearheaded a larger movement of people taking a closer look at their drinking.

Her new book, Not Drinking Tonight, is a guide to understanding why you drink, and how to stop drinking and create a sober life you love.
In our conversation, you’ll learn so much about drinking, not drinking, how to figure out whether your relationship with alcohol is working for you and when to take a break.

| Ep. 90: Dry January: Start The New Year Alcohol-Free | 29 Dec 2021 | 00:58:38 | |
Are you ready to rock Dry January alcohol-free?
I want to give you all the tips to make your Dry January fun, exciting, easy and (most importantly) a success.
Dry January is the act of giving up all forms of alcohol for the entirety of the first month of the year. That means no beer, spirits, wine, cocktails, or any other alcohol for 31 days.
Dry January began in 2012 as an initiative by Alcohol Change UK to “ditch the hangover, reduce the waistline and save some serious money by giving up alcohol for 31 days.” Millions of people now take part in the challenge each year.
To get the most out of Dry January, treat it like an experiment and not a reset.
You’re removing alcohol from your life in January to see how good you can feel without it. How does your sleep change? Your thought patterns, habits, interests and relationships?
If you are approaching January 31st and you’re feeling happier and healthier without alcohol - stay open to seeing what 60 days without drinking feels like. Keep ongoing.
Dry January is the perfect time to take a look at the role alcohol plays in your daily life, in your health choices, and how it makes you feel.
