355: Is It Just Bad Genes? (What Are The Causes Of Eczema + Psoriasis On Skin) w/ Dr. Ian Myles29 Aug 202400:49:41

Do you have eczema or psoriasis because “you got bad genes”? Doctors often say these conditions are larely genetic—but is that really true?

In this episode, Dr. Ian Myles, head of the Epithelial Therapeutics Unit at the NIH, joins me to unpack why blaming genes oversimplifies what’s really going on on the skin. From environmental triggers and microbiome imbalances to nutrient deficiencies and chemical exposures—there’s far more at play than just your DNA.

We also explore how modern genetics may have misled how doctors approach treating chronic conditions which is detailed in his book Gattaca Has Fallen. If you’ve ever felt dismissed by the “it’s genetic” explanation, this one’s for you.

346: How to Use Zinc for Eczema + Other Itchy, Painful Rashes20 Jun 202400:17:32

Topical zinc might be the missing piece in your skin rash toolkit—especially if you're dealing with eczema, psoriasis, or chronic skin rashes. Many people are deficient in zinc, and oral supplements often aren’t enough.

In this episode, I’ll break down why topical zinc can be so helpful, how to choose the right form, and what to avoid when using it.

257: Itchiness + Histamine Intolerance - Why Am I Itchy?18 Aug 202200:12:52

Most people assume that itchiness means there’s too much histamine in their bodies.

This assumption is often very wrong leading people to take anti-histamine medications that they will admit don’t help much.

If this hits home, you’ll be shocked to know that there are many different reasons (or hidden root causes) that can drive itch that often isn’t explored in conventional dermatology.

So if you’re frustrated that nothing seems to help that awful itch, you’re in the right place!

In this episode:
  • MYTH-BUSTING – itchiness + histamine intolerance
  • Common meds + supplements used to stop itch
  • What happens when these options don’t work?
  • Different itch triggers (that have nothing to do with histamine)
  • What about chronic hives + dermatographia?
Quotes:

If itchiness were solely triggered by histamine, then the medications and even potentially the supplements would help.

Itchiness is associated with higher levels of IL-31 in the body (especially in those with eczema, urticaria, and prurigo nodularis).

256: Understanding Your Skin's Circadian Rhythm w/ Michelle Jeffries, MD11 Aug 202200:35:20

Did you know that your circadian rhythm affects your skin? Are you ready to find out what it means by your skin having its OWN circadian rhythm?

If you've wondered why your skin feels different at different times of the day (super itchy at night, but fine during the day), today's guest will explain why!

My guest today is Michelle Jeffries, D.O., FAAD, FAOCD. Dr. Michelle Jeffries is a board-certified Integrative Dermatologist in private practice in Phoenix, AZ and is the CEO and Founder of The SkinClock Method. She is a triple board-certified osteopathic physician in Dermatology, Pediatric Dermatology and Integrative Medicine. Dr. Jeffries also has a Masters degree in Psychology and is an Institute for Functional Medicine Certified Practitioner. Her unique training and background has led her to a comprehensive "inside AND out" approach to skin health that blends the principles of holistic beauty with the natural health cycles of your body, universal laws of nature, ancient teachings, modern dermatology, functional nutrition, and spiritual consciousness for truly holistic skincare.

Join us as we discuss how clock genes work in alignment with your circadian rhythm and how that can affect skin health.

Have you dealt with poor sleep patterns and aligned your body's circadian rhythm to the betterment of your skin? Share with me in the comments!

In this episode:

  • What exactly is your circadian rhythm?
  • What are clock genes?
  • Why your skin may be actually drier at night along with more itchiness
  • Why is it important to align your clock genes within your body with the rhythm of the world?
  • What ancient civilizations knew that modern tech and research are discovering
  • Thoughts on blue light blockers and red light therapry

Quotes

“Shift workers who actually are awake at night and asleep during the day, they actually have different rhythms that they do throughout the day. And unfortunately they're more at risk for diabetes, heart disease and cancer, psoriasis, other things. So the research has shown when you're not aligning with those rhythms, a lot of the other systems in the body get out of sync.” [7:52]

“If we don't eat during active periods of the day and we're eating at night and we're eating when we're supposed to be resting, then that can just throw that whole gut clock out of lap, too. And then that will send mis-signals to the body because then the body has all these nutrients (to process).” [15:37]

254: Common Nutrient Deficiencies in Kids with Skin Rashes w/ Jennifer Brand MS, MPH, CNS28 Jul 202200:37:40

Ever wonder how it could be possible for little kids to have low levels of nutrients?

Have you thought that they haven't really had “time” to lose nutrients, so they should be OK? We're learning more about this, and it's important to test before deciding on a plan of action. Improving micro AND macronutrients are important when rebuilding skin health!

My guest today is Jennifer Brand, MPH, MS, CNS. She is a clinical nutritionist and the CEO of Jennifer Caryn Brand Nutrition LLC. Jennifer helps children with dry, flaky, weepy, red, itchy, painful rashes navigate the journey to healthy skin and enjoy a childhood free from disruptive skin symptoms.

Instead of managing symptoms with more diet restrictions, environment changes, and prescription creams, Jennifer uses functional testing and a detailed health history to uncover unique imbalances at the heart of the problem and provides a roadmap to restore balance so that your child can eat more foods, feel good in their skin, regain normalcy, and be a child. Jennifer’s own struggle with gut problems and disordered eating made worse with elimination diets, and her father’s, brother’s, and mother’s struggles with psoriasis, eczema, and vitiligo left Jennifer frustrated. Conventional recommendations fell flat and didn’t help her, or her loved ones get relief from these health problems. These experiences inspired her to search for a different approach, one that addresses the root causes of health problems like these.

Jennifer has been a faculty member of LearnSkin, and her work has been featured in peer-reviewed scientific journals, Voyagela, as well as on podcasts, online summits, and in-person presentations at venues such as Casa Colina Hospital in California.

Join us as we discuss how low levels of certain nutrients may contribute to your kid's skin rashes.
Have you identified certain LOW or maybe even HIGH nutrient levels and it made a difference in your little one's skin health? Let me know in the comments!

In this episode:
  • What nutrient imbalances are common with kids that have eczema
  • How kids get so low in critical nutrients
  • How to test for this and what can be done about this from a dietary perspective
  • What role gut health plays in resolving skin rashes
  • What you can do RIGHT NOW to start rebuilding healthy skin
Quotes

“When it comes to the micronutrients, the ones that I'm seeing low levels of are vitamins A, C, E, alpha lipoic acid, CoQ10, glutathione, and plant-based antioxidants. Also B vitamins are commonly low in they're mineral imbalances and also high lipid peroxides. But really, the common thread that I see here with all of these micronutrient findings, is that they can be linked to antioxidant status and oxidative stress.” [4:48]

“Supplements are not benign. And all nutrients work together in the body, so if you supplement with individual ones and it's not necessary, it can throw off other ones and cause other problems. And so it's also why it's important to test and not guess and supplement where it's actually needed.” [16:09]

253: Eczema Expo 2022 Recap21 Jul 202200:15:23

Did you know that there is a huge annual event just for people struggling with Eczema?

Yes!!! It’s called the Eczema Expo and the event is hosted by the National Eczema Association.

Due to my dad’s health declining and then the pandemic, I wasn’t able to attend in prior years, so this was my first time!

I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the entire experience really was incredible. Many of you asked for a recap to see if this might be a good event for you next year.

Just in case you’re wondering – my review of the event is not associated with the hosting organization or the event. I paid for all expenses to travel and attend the event and was not compensated (nor incentivized) to share this information.

It’s my hope that this will answer many of your questions about the event, so let’s dive in!

In this episode:
  • My experience attending the Eczema Expo for the first time
  • Talk highlights from my favorite talks presented at Expo
  • Activities + events that you can enjoy
  • Experience with the hotel hosting Expo
  • What I hope will improve next year
  • Will I attend again? (drumroll, please)
Quotes:

“This event that frankly was very “you do you” without any requirement to show up to anything to allow you the freedom to come and go as you pleased.”

“It seemed impossible to feel alone because you were immersed in this beautiful, welcoming, supportive community.”

252: Heavy Metals + Skin Rashes: What You Need To Know w/ Dr. Sonza Curtis, ND, PA-C, IFMP14 Jul 202200:31:36

Do you feel like the words “heavy metals” are getting a lot of buzz lately? It seems like it's hot topic that you read about on social media where everybody's like, “Maybe I do have mercury poisoning? Maybe I have lead poisoning?” My guest today is going to give you the lowdown on how heavy metals and other toxins affect gut health and what you can do about it.

Today's guest, Dr. Sonza Curtis, ND, PA-C, IFMP, has a doctorate in Naturopathy for Healthcare Professionals and was certified through the Institute of Functional Medicine. She completed her undergraduate and master of Physician Assistant Studies at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She has additional advanced training and specializes in Gut, Autoimmune, and Hormone health.

Dr. Sonza has always been committed to helping people get better naturally and has many techniques built into her practice designed to help patients get back to health better than before they came through her doors. Her ability to listen carefully to her patients, along with the mix of western medicine and naturopathy, make her a top Functional Medicine doctor in the Atlanta metro area.

Join us as we discuss everything surrounding heavy metals.

Have you ever done heavy metal testing or tried a heavy metal detox? What worked or what did you learn? Tell me about it in the comments!

In this episode:
  • What are heavy metals specifically and how do they differ from minerals like zinc, sodium, or potassium
  • What are the most common origins for heavy metal toxicity?
  • Why heavy metal toxicity is higher in women during menopause
  • Important things you should do before a heavy metal detox
  • When to see a Functional Medicine Doctor
Quotes

“We're full of metals, even as we're talking in the EMFs and different things of that nature, if a person is very sensitive sometimes they can't even take that… The two negatives repel. Sometimes even the conductivity in electronics can cause patients issues that can trigger, even intensify their heavy metals.” [7:30]

“If you're not pooping on a regular basis, guess what you're doing with that toxin? You're recirculating the toxins, and it's going to stay in there stronger. You have to make sure all the process of where you're detoxing is optimal before you start pushing things and trying to get it out.” [20:05]

  • Various medications Abby tried with her doctor
  • Her personal advice to get through the mental anguish
  • The ONE thing that has worked so far in helping her eczema
  • How Abby's standard of "what is beauty" has changed
Quotes

“...It's not the fact that you have eczema and then you just put the thing (on) they give you and it goes away. It's this never-ending process of finding out what product works best for you and what truly kills a problem at the core.” [1:16]

“After the steroids, we were like, 'I can't be using cream anymore. There has to be another option.' So we went to the dermatologist and they're like, 'All right, we have this thing called Dupixent,' and listed, gave the whole rundown of it all. And I was like, I'm so desperate, I do not care what I need to do. So I gave it a shot, and it's the only thing that has worked for me so far.” [14:04]

251: Why You Should Balance Iron + Copper w/ Amanda Montalvo, RD30 Jun 202200:35:25

Many of our readers and listeners have heard me talk about the zinc and copper relationship. Have you delved into how copper is involved yet? My guest today shares everything from the importance of minerals to how the iron recycling system works.

Today's guest, Amanda Montalvo, RD, is a women’s health dietitian that helps women get to the root cause of hormone imbalances and have healthy menstrual cycles. Amanda started off her education in nutrition with the traditional route, but after dealing with her own health problems after getting off hormonal birth control she quickly realized the value of functional medicine.   After healing her acne, balancing her hormones, and learning the value of her menstrual cycle, Amanda found her purpose—to help women create a body in balance and not settle for anything less.

Join us as we discuss minerals and WHY so many get iron wrong.

Have you been told you're anemic and want to look into your copper or Vitamin A status? Tell me about it in the comments! In this episode:
  • How mineral imbalances affect the whole body
  • How do copper and Vitamin A regulate iron?
  • Organ meats- should you supplement?
  • Beta-carotene versus retinol
  • Opinions on utilizing hair mineral testing to see the overall picture of stress and mineral levels
  • Different labs to ask your doctor for
Quotes

“Iron is in our tissues. We need to get it into the blood. How do we do that? We have different proteins that are moving it around, but those proteins need enzymes. Those enzymes are just making a reaction happen and that's where the minerals come in, right? Minerals are spark plugs for reactions in the body for enzymes.” [6:56]

“As estrogen goes up, hepcidin will also increase, and then that means we have less iron absorption in the gut. So, you can look anemic when you have high estrogen, but in reality, you're actually storing a lot of iron. So, hormones can definitely impact our iron status as well." [20:06]

250: Progesterone Sensitivity Rash23 Jun 202200:11:19

Did you know that progesterone can trigger rashes?

Usually estrogen is more commonly the “sex hormone problem child” when it comes to skin, but when progesterone is the culprit, it’s causes A LOT of trouble.

If you’ve never heard of progesterone triggering rashes or Progesterone Hypersensitivity, you’ll want to check out this episode.

Now to be clear, this is NOT a common problem as progesterone reactivity like this is considered to be rare (though I’m willing to bet that a lot of cases are left undiagnosed if you don’t know what to even look for).

And if you know someone dealing with progesterone sensitivity rashes, please share this with them because there is a lot of great research linked up in the citations section below that could be helpful for them!

In this episode:
  • What is progesterone hypersensitivity?
  • Is it an autoimmune disease or an allergic reaction?
  • Tips for figuring out if you have progesterone hypersensitivity
  • Fascinating signs + symptoms
  • Potential triggers that prime your body to react to progesterone
  • Treatment options to discuss with your doctor
Quotes:

A consistent flare-up that starts around the progesterone spike in your cycle around day 20 or 21 of a 28-day cycle is an important clue.

Progesterone hypersensitivity may be linked to a higher rate of pregnancy loss.

“About three years into having vitiligo, I began to get depressed because the skin, my pigment was changing aggressively. I was losing my color, it seemed like every day, spots were appearing on my skin, and it was really devastating. I felt like I'd been given a death sentence. 248: Is Eczema Related To Histamine Intolerance?09 Jun 202200:10:02

If you’ve heard or read that eczema is a “histamine intolerance” problem, I’ve got news for you…

That’s actually not always true.

In fact, itchy skin doesn’t mean you have histamine intolerance either.

This might fly in the face of what you’ve come to believe about what your “root causes” are, but it’s really important.

It can help you if you find that antihistamines aren’t really working!

OR if you’ve been doing a low histamine diet without noticing much improvement.

So let’s talk about how atopic dermatitis is (or is not) connected to histamine overload while answering a listener’s question on how certain foods (like berries) could be good or bad for rashes!

In this episode:

  • Are berries high in histamine (and a problem for eczema)?
  • Eczema + Histamine Intolerance – Are they connected?
  • FODMAP foods + histamine issues
  • Percentage of eczema cases that are histamine driven (in my practice)

Quotes:

Blueberries are actually low in histamine while strawberries are high in histamine.

It’s erroneous to assume that eczema automatically means you have a histamine problem because that’s simply not true.

247: Helping Kids With Rashes To Thrive w/ Dr. Nicole Beurkens, PhD, CNS02 Jun 202200:40:23

Dealing with chronic skin conditions can take their toll mentally on anyone, but put yourself in the shoes of a child who may not have the same life experience as you do to cope. Stick in the dreaded school bullying, and you can have a major storm on your hands as parents or caregivers. My guest today covers specific things to look for and DO when tackling mental health for children with skin rashes.

Today's guest, Dr. Nicole Beurkens, is a licensed clinical psychologist with advanced degrees in psychology, education, and nutrition. She is a leading holistic child psychologist and has dedicated her 25-year career to providing parents with research-based strategies that get to the root of children’s attention, anxiety, mood, and behavior challenges so they can reach their highest potential. She runs a multi-disciplinary evaluation and treatment clinic and is a best-selling author, published researcher, award-winning therapist, media expert, and experienced mother of four.

Join us as we discuss how to best SUPPORT mental health holistically for children and teens with chronic skin conditions.

If you've found that counseling or at-home therapy work has helped your family in dealing with a chronic condition, what specifically helped the most? Let me know in the comments! In this episode:
  • Why it's a BIG mistake to NOT talk about skin conditions with your kid (especially if it makes your child feel "different")
  • Steps to empower your child if they have a skin condition
  • Criteria of red flags to know that there's something wrong or signs that there could be an issue at school
  • How to get your child talking (without feeling ashamed) about bullying or other problems they face
  • Benefits of having your child talk to someone other than you (or another parent or caregiver)
Quotes

“A lot of times kids are bringing those things to us not because they want us to in and play superhero and call everybody's mom, and fix it... they're telling us because they need us to be with them in how they're feeling about it. They need to not be alone in how they're feeling.” [17:30]

“...The reality is that most children, the vast majority will not initiate telling a parent or teacher or caregiver that it's going on because they are ashamed, because they're embarrassed because they don't know how to talk about that. So it is up to US as the adults in these kids' lives to raise these issues and to watch for the signs.” [10:16]

246: Everything You Need To Know About Skin Tests (Done By Your Dermotologist) w/ Dr. Peter Lio26 May 202200:31:40

Have you ever heard to just put honey or aloe on your rash? I URGE you to think twice on treating an angry rash at home before knowing what it is. Sometimes, it can be life threatening as you will hear from my guest today who had a patient have sepsis!

Not to mention, it could be tiny microscopic bugs, which gives the shivers just thinking about it.

My guest today is Dr. Peter Lio, a Clinical Assistant Professor of Dermatology & Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

He received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School, completed his internship in Pediatrics at Boston Children’s Hospital, and his Dermatology training at Harvard where he served as Chief Resident in Dermatology. While at Harvard, he received formal training in acupuncture.

Dr. Lio has written a textbook on Integrative Dermatology and has published over 100 papers.

Join us as we discuss all the different types of skin testing for various conditions, which your doctor could run.

Have you ever had any of skin testing done and it helped tremendously? Tell me about it in the comments!

In this episode:
  • Why you need a dermatologist on your team to help rule out infections + more serious issues (even if you want to do things more naturally)
  • Different testing types and when you do each one (AND for which condition)
  • What are scabies and Demodex mites, and why could Ivermectin help?
  • How does patch testing work?
  • Thoughts on supplementing with B12 if you have a cobalt allergy
  • Hidden sneaky source of benzoyl peroxide (if you have this allergy)
Quotes

“Scabies are these little, teeny-tiny mites, they're invisible to the naked eye, but not to the microscope. So what we do is we'll scrape the little parts of the skin or even better is we can scrape under your nails because if you're itchy, you're collecting little scabies mites under your fingernails.” [08:51]

“The biggest thing I think for bacterial infection is skin pain or tenderness. If it's just itchy, I'm not as worried, but if a patient calls me and says, it hurts, it's sore. Then I'm like, whoa, that's a super four-alarm fire.” [11:04]

In this episode:
  • Butyrate- its effect on barrier function and how it connects the gut to the skin
  • Why EVERYONE needs to be sprouting and a secret hack to getting more DAO enzyme from pea sprouts
  • How fiber is food for the microbes in your gut and how that feeds them, which helps you
  • What's the science behind FODMAPS?
  • What may be the healthiest food on the planet
Quotes

“If I walk out on the street right now and I find a random sample of 20 Americans, 19 out of 20 are deficient in fiber. And not like mildly deficient, but like severely deficient.” [5:05]

“FODMAPS are actually really good for us. So we want the FODMAPS, we just want them in the right amount. And we want to train our gut, make it stronger and make it capable of processing these foods for us.” [21:25]

244: How Do Biologic Drugs For Chronic Skin Conditions Work? w/ Heather Zwickey, PhD12 May 202200:33:43

Are you trying to weigh the pros and cons of possibly using a biologic like Dupixent for your skin condition? Your immune system has such a complex relationship with one another, so it's important to have complete informed consent when starting one. Look into all the side effects- they could be actually helpful, but they could also lead to cancer!

My guest today, Heather Zwickey, earned a Ph.D. in Immunology and Microbiology from the University of Colorado and completed a postdoctoral fellowship and taught at Yale University School of Medicine.

Dr. Zwickey is recognized internationally as an expert and educator in the fields of integrative medicine, natural therapies and the immune system and has been leading natural medicine research for 20 years. Heather speaks at conferences world-wide, sharing her enthusiasm for naturopathic medicine and science. She currently serves as the Director of Communication and Innovation at Thaena Inc., a microbiome-based company.

Join us as we talk about how biologic drugs for chronic skin conditions work.

Did you know about the relationship between your immune system and your skin? Let me know in the comments!

In this episode:
  • Biologic drugs - what are they, how are they prescribed, and what do they do?
  • Real side effects of biologics - the bad and even the good
  • Breaking down what cytokines are (in layman's terms)
  • Cytokines and the JAK/STAT pathway
  • Discussion of JAK inhibitors (the newest version of biologic drugs for skin issues)
Quotes

“Back when we used things like methotrexate for skin disorders, we would see that the entire immune system was blocked and as a result, there would be side effects of things like cancer. When we're only blocking one protein, we have much less severe side effects.” [2:59]

If your skin is not in balance with its microbes, it will affect your gut. We really got to address that. That is the root cause, and usually the way that we're going to address that is with eating more plant-based foods and getting some of the toxins out of our system, and letting those microbes grow the way that they were supposed to grow in normal ecosystems.” [17:47]

243: Functional Approach to Alopecia Areata w/ Dr. Julie Greenberg05 May 202200:39:29

Alopecia has been a hot topic in the media lately, but for others who have been dealing with hair loss for some time, it can be triggering and even devastating.

My guest today, Dr. Julie Greenberg, is a licensed ND who specializes in integrative dermatology and works with hair loss in her practice.

She is the founder of the Center for Integrative Dermatology, a holistic dermatology clinic that approaches skin problems by finding and treating the root cause.

Dr. Greenberg holds degrees from Northwestern University, Stanford University and Bastyr University, and received advanced clinical training at the Dermatology Clinic at the University of Washington Medical School and at the Pediatric Dermatology Center at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

She is also the Program Chair of the Naturopathic & Integrative Dermatology series on LearnSkin.com, a learning platform for integrative health care professionals.

Join us as we discuss what a functional approach to alopecia areata is and learn about the many types of alopecia there are.

I'd love to know if you have tried any of the tips that Dr. Greenberg has shared in this episode -- Let me know in the comments!

In this episode:
  • Different types of alopecia
  • Patterns in stool testing that Dr. Greenberg tends to see in hair loss cases
  • What vitamins are actually important for hair health (hint - it's not biotin!)
  • Why autoimmunity is more than just gut dysbiosis
  • Are biologics or topical minoxidil worth trying if you want to deal with alopecia holistically?
  • Why it's important to catch hair thinning early rather than waiting it out
Quotes

“Biotin always comes up and it's another one of those things where, absolutely, if someone is deficient in biotin, it can cause hair loss and we would supplement, but biotin's got a really great PR person and it's out there in every supplement, and every patient who's losing their hair comes to me just taking tons of biotin. And there's no evidence to prove, unfortunately, that if you're not deficient in biotin, that biotin supplementation is going to help, and it can throw off a lot of labs, so a lot of my patients, I have to take off of biotin." [14:51]

“When we think about an autoimmune disease, we have to stop for a minute and think like, wow, things have really gone awry in the body when the body can't identify self, right, because that's its number one job, is we have to know, what's self and what's an invader? We don't want to be attacking self. That's a self-defeating purpose. And so, for the body to get that far off, it usually takes both the microbiome gut dysfunction, leaky gut picture, and a toxic element where it's just so overwhelmed, it's under so much attack, it's just so confused that it's just firing at everything." [17:10]

242: When A Liver Detox Can Help Your Skin (And When It Can’t)28 Apr 202200:10:39

As you might already know – I’m not a fan of liver detoxes or liver cleanses when you’re struggling with chronic skin rashes.

But there are some exceptions to this which I think are worthwhile to share.

Especially given the massive amount of marketing online constantly telling you that you need to detox your liver, understanding the nuance can be really helpful.

There are instances where a liver detox makes sense, and other times where it absolutely does not (and could make your skin worse).

So let’s dive into this so you can make a more educated decision about what is and is not right for your liver and skin!

In this episode:
  • My thoughts on liver detoxes versus liver nutrient support
  • What skin issues could benefit from a liver detox
  • Histamine Overload + liver detoxes
  • Lab suggestions to help you identify liver dysfunction
Quotes:

Liver detoxes can cause major flareups and reactions that you probably didn’t intend, especially if your liver is already struggling.

Psoriasis is one instance where a liver detox can sometimes be really helpful if there is a lot of liver dysfunction.

241: How I Dealt With Scalp Rashes (PERSONAL JOURNEY) w/ Sheradyn Dekker21 Apr 202200:35:09

Sharing a very emotional healing journey can be intimidating for many people. Most people don't want to talk about bowel movements and skin flaking off publicly, right? My guest today gets very personal on how she figured out her root causes for her skin rashes and scalp dermatitis in hopes it might help someone else.

My guest today, Sheradyn Dekker, is a qualified Gut Health Nutritionist, with a Masters in Nutrition and Postgraduate studies in Functional Diagnostic Nutrition. Sheradyn not only has the “head” knowledge but has also experienced symptoms first hand. Having spent years battling chronic gut pain (IBS), bloating, missing periods & scalp dermatitis, she is passionate about helping others get to the ROOT cause of their symptoms!

When dieting, supplements & medications didn't work for her symptoms, Sheradyn went on to study Functional Diagnostic Nutrition, and now uses a “root cause” approach, which incorporates nutrition, herbs and functional testing to heal those struggling with gut symptoms. Her goal is to educate and empower women to listen to their bodies, acknowledge stress and to stop using a band aid approach to their health!

Join us as we discuss Sheradyn's personal journey to healing, and why it will inspire you if you, too, are dealing with chronic skin conditions that you cannot figure out. It may not be one "cause" such as only parasites or infections, but many issues affecting your gut!

Do you have a chronic condition that you suspect may be caused by a gut imbalance?  Let me know in the comments!

In this episode:
  • Does international travel matter with skin rashes?
  • Why internal and external stressors matter and are such an overlooked role for your immune system
  • How eating “too little” or having a restrictive diet itself can be a hurdle when healing
  • All the different lab tests you can run, whether you live in the U.S. or not
  • Digging into why supplements may be crucial when the underlying problem aren't diet-fixable
Quotes

“It was purely that gut stuff, getting that right, stress reduction, and actually sorting out my hormones as well and going, "Oh right, there's actually bigger picture stuff," than going, "Yeah, it's just the parasites," because that's what I kind of got told at the time from someone. So understanding there's a whole process to it. Like you said, just DIY-ing it, in a sense, it just wasn't working." [13:40]

"I know some people do a lot of food allergy testing and other things as well. It's not my forte. I don't do it straight off the bat. I usually start with something like stool testing because I want to get sort of down to the nitty gritty on those sides of things." [23:49]

240: How To Wash Your Face (PART 2) w/ Rachael Pontillo14 Apr 202200:30:48

This is a two-part interview! Check out part 1 by clicking HERE!

Today I continue my conversation with Rachael Pontillo all about holistic skincare and yes, why order matters when it comes to layering on products.

My guest today, Rachael Pontillo, is a holistic skincare innovator, author, and educator. She is the bestselling author of the book Love Your Skin, Love Yourself, and co-author of The Sauce Code.

She’s a functional nutrition practitioner, AADP and IAHC Board Certified International Health Coach, licensed aesthetician; and natural skincare formulator and educator. She’s the president and co-founder of the Nutritional Aesthetics™ Alliance, the creator of the popular skincare and healthy lifestyle blog, Holistically Haute™, as well as the much-loved online course, Create Your Skincare.

She’s an avid herbalist, skincare ingredient aficionado, and lifelong learner.

Join us as we continue the discussion on what to look for when choosing a holistic and herbal skincare regime along with HOW to use it.

What's your favorite skincare ingredient? Let me know in the comments!

In this episode:
  • Issues with exfoliants + anti-aging skincare products (that no one tells you)
  • Why hydration is important for your products to even work
  • What order should you put your products on
  • Different DIY at-home face masks that are single-ingredient + simple
  • Opinions on the gold-standard of vitamin C, retinol, and hyaluronic acid
Quotes

“It's a tricky thing because vitamin C can also help the skin repair after sun damage. But depending on the type of vitamin C you get, which you might not know just from looking at the label, not all of it is the kind that actually can absorb into the deeper layers. Some of it stays on the surface where it oxidizes. And then if it comes into contact with the sun, you get a magnified sun response, which can be problematic. [36:11]

So, I have an unpopular opinion about hyaluronic acid. I'm not a fan... And for those of you who don't know, hyaluronic acid is something that does naturally occur in the skin. However, there's no evidence that shows that if you apply it topically that you're increasing the skin level of hyaluronic acid." [42:24]

"I always say that your skincare routine is as personalized, needs to be as personalized as your diet. Every person needs different things at different times of life. So, you've got to figure out what works for you. It usually really does help by just stripping it back, simplifying it to almost nothing. [53:45]

In this episode:
  • What should you look for when choosing skincare?
  • Why fancy cleansers are a WASTE of your money
  • Why some preservatives aren't necessarily bad
Quotes

“Unfortunately, a lot of the products that are in big cosmetics are intended to create some sort of a temporary visual effect so that you think you're getting results, but in the long run, it's not doing you any good because they want you to keep buying products.” [5:26]

"It's not uncommon to see a preservative in a hydrosol. Not all preservatives are bad. It is a water. So, anytime you have a product with water, that means that the potential for microbial growth is there. So, I don't want people getting caught up in this notion that their skincare has to be preservative free, and then get something that hasn't been preserved properly. [29:31]

Quotes

“Genital psoriasis is something that it even leads to lower quality of life, and even more sensation of stigma. These patients do not want to have sexual intercourse with their partners, or they stop seeking out for partners because they're embarrassed or because they feel that they're going to be judged because of that rash.” [5:26]

237: How Chronic Inflammation (Even With Chronic Skin Issues) Can Drive Bio Aging w/ Dr. Kara Fitzgerald17 Mar 202200:44:58

I find anti-aging to be this awful marketing device that oftentimes makes us feel bad about ourselves, but that's not what this interview is about! My guest today will discuss what exactly is bio-aging and how genetic expression plays a big role.

My guest today, Dr. Kara Fitzgerald, ND, IFMCP, is the first-ever recipient of the 2018 Emerging Leadership Award from the Personalized Lifestyle Medicine Institute in recognition of her work on DNA methylation. As a leading voice in the intersection of nutrition, epigenetics, and aging, Dr. Fitzgerald’s work has been featured in media outlets such as Prevention, Fast Company, MSN, Everyday Health , and many more. Receiving her doctorate from National University of Natural Medicine, she is on the faculty at the Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM) and is an IFM Certified Practitioner with a clinical practice in Newtown, Connecticut.

Join us as we discuss all things bio-aging (NOT anti-aging skincare) and what you can do to influence your bio-age.

Did you know that the chronic inflammation of skin conditions could drive aging forward? Let me know in the comments!

In this episode:
  • Why skin issues are systemic and how the inflammation is being driven from the inside out
  • How gene expression influences quality of life and lifespan, health span, and diseases
  • How you can turn genes on and off
  • What are epinutrients?
  • What is the sweet spot for exercise to reduce aging?
  • A trick to help you turn the volume of stress down, which is a huge driver of bioaging
Quotes

“If we could improve biological age by a year, there is one estimate that it would save the country $38 trillion. And given that biological age is the biggest risk factor for all these chronic diseases, rather than siloing all illnesses separately, if we put our energy towards helping people age younger, keeping them healthier, we could by extension reduce risk for all of these illnesses. ” [8:01]

“Epinutrients are nutrients that influence epigenetics and specifically DNA methylation, because that's where we just really hung our hat. So all of these epinutrients have some evidence of favorably helping with gene expression, specifically through DNA methylation. So we want... to bathe ourselves in sufficient methylation. ” [25:36]

236: How Sleep Impacts Your Skin (Tips + Strategies) PT 3 w/ Michelle Nilan, MS, CNS10 Mar 202200:41:10

Poor sleep quality can affect the skin in a number of ways. Sleep is a time for our bodies to repair, and poor sleep does not allow that to happen efficiently. Today, my guest and I will discuss exactly how sleep and skin health are linked, as well as ways to improve your sleep quality.

THIS IS THE FINAL SEGMENT OF A 3-PART INTERVIEW.

My guest today is my colleague, Michelle Nilan, CNS. Michelle is a clinical nutritionist, yoga teacher, and ACSM-certified personal trainer. She is the associate clinical nutritionist in my private practice and has been working with me since June 2020!

She has a master's in human nutrition from the University of Bridgeport and a bachelor's in philosophy from Humboldt State University.

Through her work with me, Michelle has developed an extensive understanding of the complex relationship between the skin, gut, and overall health, and values being able to turn this into practical, actionable guidance to help others become well. She is additionally well-versed in metabolic conditions, insulin resistance and diabetes, and nutrition for high-risk pregnancies.

Michelle also has a history of her own skin struggles with severe cystic acne, fungal acne, and tinea versicolor, as well as with managing thyroid, hormone, and autoimmunity issues, and knows all too well what it feels like to have significant life-impacting symptoms completely dismissed and be told by doctors that she’d “just have to live with it.”

She is grateful for the opportunity to help others avoid the years of suffering she had to endure while trying to find and address the root causes on her own. Due to her work in philosophy, as well as her personal history of childhood trauma, she has a deep appreciation for the invisible mental and emotional suffering of skin and health issues that aren't obvious from the outside, and allows this to guide her approach of seeing a whole person rather than merely a collection of symptoms or a problem to fix.

When she’s not working with clients, Michelle enjoys staying updated with the latest nutrition research, lifting weights, reading, going to museums, spending time in nature, drinking coffee while people-watching, and playing with her cat Daoshi.

Join us for the final part of a 3-part interview all about sleep and the skin. In this series, we've been discussing circadian rhythm, sleep hygiene, why sleep is important, and so much more! Today, we'll focus on how sleep affects skin health.

233: Should You Go Gluten-Free to Stop Eczema, Psoriasis or Other Rashes?17 Feb 202200:10:54

Have you tried a gluten-free diet for eczema, psoriasis, rosacea or some other type of chronic skin problem?

Whether you noticed an improvement or not, you might wonder if it’s worthwhile to continue avoiding gluten…

And if so, for how long?

I want to share with you my thoughts based on research as well as my clinical experience as to why I recommend to clients to avoid gluten.

AND why I don’t really care about whether it’s an actual food trigger that flares your rashes.

Gluten is a much bigger problem for chronic skin issues than it simply being a potential “food sensitivity”.

No matter what you decide, I hope that this different perspective on gluten and skin rashes helps you decide for yourself whether to stay gluten-free or not!

In this episode:
  • Why I ask my clients to remove gluten (even if it’s not a food trigger + skin issues don’t improve)
  • Research connecting gluten to eczema, psoriasis + rosacea
  • Gluten’s distinct role in increasing leaky gut
  • Do you have to avoid gluten forever if you have skin rashes?
Quotes:

One study found that women with rosacea had “twice the odds of having type 1 diabetes, celiac disease, multiple sclerosis or Rheumatoid Arthritis.”

Gluten increases leaky gut every time it’s consumed whether you are sensitive to gluten, have celiac or are non-reactive.

  • Does hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) progress?
  • Yeast and HS - should you try a yeast-free diet?
  • Diseases associated with HS
  • How zinc could be helpful (RESEARCH)
  • Antibiotics for HS
  • Laser hair removal + HS
Quotes

“For the majority of patients, it does progress. Once in a while, there are some people where it doesn't really get past Stage 1. But even in Stage 1, you're still having these recurrent boils in your armpit, and your groin, under the breasts, and the buttocks.” [1:41]

“We've done a lot of studies to see what other diseases are associated with HS, and unfortunately, there's quite a long list.” [8:13]

231: Are Biologic Drugs Bad For You? (OPINION)03 Feb 202200:13:06

Have you ever wondered if biologic drugs are bad for you?

It’s a question that I frequently answer on my Instagram profile, but I also find that clients share similar concerns.

So I figured that I’d take this moment to explain my feelings on biologic drugs which is not a black + white answer.

It is complicated and it’s also highly personal for every single person considering this route.

I hope that my approach is helpful on your journey so that you can ultimately decide what is best for you.

In this episode:
  • My non-medical practitioner opinion about whether biologic drugs are bad for you
  • My personal belief system about informed consent (and where it came from)

A simple analogy to understand how biologic drugs work

  • Do biologic drugs cure your condition?
  • Suggested steps before agreeing to a biologic (or any other type of serious medication)
  • Can you still do root cause work if you’re taking a biologic?
Quotes:

There’s too much shaming and fear-mongering that can make it difficult for you to advocate for and trust in the decisions that you make.

My opinion about how using or not using medication was instilled in me by my father who was a very staunch advocate for informed consent.

230: {RESEARCH} Mindfulness Stress Reduction Benefits For Chronic Skin Problems Like Eczema + Psoriasis w/ Jessica Maloh27 Jan 202200:33:44

Have you ever heard of MBSR (Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction)? My guest today is going to tell us all about it, as well as research into why a mindfulness practice could be beneficial for those with chronic skin issues (such as eczema, psoriasis, and alopecia areata).

Jessica completed her BSc at York University in Toronto, ON and has completed her Doctor of Naturopathy degree from the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. Her passion for integrative medicine and research led her to a postdoc position at UC Davis’ Department of Dermatology and now more recently, to work with Integrative Skin Science and Research.

Her research interests include nutrition, the microbiome, mindfulness, and quality of life in various dermatological conditions.

Join us as we discuss research surrounding the benefits of mindfulness for chronic skin rashes.

Do you have a regular stress reduction and mindfulness practice? Let me know in the comments!

In this episode:
  • Can our state of mind affect our skin?
  • What do the terms "itch intensity" and "itch catastrophizing" mean?
  • Can a mindfulness practice help people with alopecia areata?
  • What is MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction)?
Quotes

“You can think of mindfulness as the practice of paying attention on purpose to the present moment without judgment.” [5:40]

“Itch catastrophization could be thoughts along the lines of this itch is only going to continue to get worse and worse and it's never going to go away. And so seeing maybe the extremes of the negatives and the anticipation of it becoming gradually worse. And itch intensity is more so about the physical sensation of it really increasing and how you feel the itch.” [7:51]

229: Lanolin Allergy + Vitamin D20 Jan 202200:10:52

I have to be honest – lanolin can be a real pain for anyone who’s allergic to it.

If you’ve never heard of lanolin and you’re struggling with mystery “contact” dermatitis, it could be worthwhile asking your dermatologist or allergist to do a patch test.

While lanolin allergies aren’t that common, they are tricky to navigate since lanolin is not required to be labeled and can hide quite sneakily in products you probably take daily (and would never suspect).

Since I’m all about helping people connect the dots, this seems like the perfect opportunity to discuss lanolin and its connection with vitamin D.

I know you’ll find this fascinating, so get ready to do a quick dive into lanolin – a commonly used ingredient used in popular skincare products and daily supplements.

In this episode:
  • What is lanolin (and where does it come from)?
  • How would you find out if you are allergic to it?
  • Where it is found in skincare
  • Lanolin + vitamin D issue
  • Other names for lanolin
  • Extensive (but not complete) list of products containing lanolin
Quotes:

Research shows an increase in sensitization between 2004 and 2015 with data from 2019 showing that a lanolin allergy impacted up to 1.2% of those in the test group.

Lanolin isn’t a required allergen to be listed on labels which is why it hides in so many products!

228: Tips For Adding The Anti-inflammatory Mediterranean Diet Into Your Routine w/ Suzy Karadsheh13 Jan 202200:45:55

The Mediterranean Diet is one of the world's healthiest ways of eating, and for good reason! There's a large body of research touting its benefits which is why I think it's a great place to start from if you're looking to make smart shifts in your diet for the benefit of your skin.

This does not mean that other traditional cuisines aren't as good for your skin, by the way. After careful consideration, it seems like a great place to start if you're looking to make changes that could be gradual rather than some sort of change that many find unsustainable.

While it focuses heavily on plant-based foods with lots of healthy fats, it also balances everything with lean sources of protein -- which you must recall, protein intake is crucial to helping your skin and your health!

If you're not sure where to start, my guest today is an absolute expert to help inspire you to try some new recipes and encourage you to get back in the kitchen to start cooking!

Suzy Karadsheh is the founder of TheMediterraneanDish.com, the leading site for modern Mediterranean cooking and lifestyle.

She has been featured on ACCESS, Barron’s, Today, HuffPost, as well as Good Housekeeping, Well and Good, Food Network’s Delish, Shape, Pure Wow, The Kitchn, and more.

Suzy was born and raised by the shores of the Mediterranean in Port Said, Egypt, and now and lives in Atlanta, Georgia, with her husband, their two daughters, and dog Max. .

Join us as we discuss the basics of the Mediterranean Diet, and some practical tips for incorporating it.

Has changing the way you eat helped your skin? Let me know in the comments!

In this episode:
  • What is the Mediterranean Diet?
  • How to get started eating the Mediterranean way
  • How to choose extra virgin olive oil
  • What is za'atar?
  • Tips for making fresh parsley last longer in the fridge
Quotes

“We eat more of the vegetables, fruits, legumes, grains. We focus a lot on healthy fats. So my fat of choice to cook with is extra virgin olive oil. We do more fish than most other cultures do.” [2:46]

“Eat with the season, use whole foods and above all, share.” [8:30]

343: How To Use Black Seed Oil (Benefits + Top Tips For Soothing Inflamed Skin + Scalp) w/ Rachael Pontillo30 May 202400:43:32

After a recent episode on black seed oil, I was flooded with questions—so we’re diving deeper into its benefits for rashes, itchy skin, and even hair shedding.

Black cumin seed oil is rich in thymoquinone, known for its antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal properties. It's also packed with skin-supportive nutrients and is typically well-tolerated, even for sensitive skin—one reason it’s featured in all our DermaQuell creams.

Joining me is skincare formulator and holistic expert Rachael Pontillo to break down how to safely use black seed oil, what to look for in products, and its potential for skin relief.

227: Using Habits To Better Care For Your Skin06 Jan 202200:11:17

If you’re one of those people who can’t stick to changes that you want to make to help your skin, this episode is for you!

One of the biggest reasons people fail at making changes is that habits that you already have are VERY strong.

Motivation simply isn’t a good driver for habit change (because that’s actually what you want to do).

Your skin needs you as a partner on this journey called life, so becoming skilled at changing routines and taking actions that support your skin are huge!

So let’s talk about how you can start to make changes that will actually stick without feeling like it’s such a hard uphill battle to “stay on the wagon”.

In this episode:
  • Why depending on “feeling motivated” will not help you long-term with changes
  • The power of habits (and why they’re more important to focus on)
  • My #1 book recommendation to learn more about habits
  • Tips to help you start breaking out of habit loops that aren’t in alignment with changes you want to make
Quotes:

Habits are patterns that allow your brain to go on autopilot so that it doesn’t have to think its way through every moment of your day.

To change or break a habit, something must change in your environment to keep your mind from going on autopilot.

226: Best Mindset Shifts For Chronic Skin Issues For 202230 Dec 202100:13:12

If you have hit some really tough patches this past year with your skin or you’re struggling now to stay positive, this episode is for you.

Mindset is one of the greatest tools that you have to help you in the darkest of moments.

It’s what honestly can keep you staying the path or throwing in the towel.

We talk a lot about research and all sorts of physical things that can go wrong, but the truth is that some tools – like your mindset – are intangible.

It’s my hope that these ideas that I’ll share with you will help you see how to use mindset and my own personal “mindset of choice” that I’ve found to build the most resiliency.

In this episode:
  • One thing to get your mindset in the best place possible
  • Why I’m such a fan of being “relentlessly persistent”
  • What to do if you start to have an intense flare
  • Why seeking THE ONE THING that could be wrecking your skin is a bad idea
Quotes:

My experience coaching clients has taught me that if you do not feel hopeful or believe that you can be helped, you’ll likely throw in the towel at the slightest inconvenience or issue.

Focus on what you can control and what actions you can take no matter how small on any given day so that you don’t get stuck.

225: Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW)- Is It Just A Waiting Game? w/ Dr. Julie Greenberg16 Dec 202100:49:02

Have you heard that if you're going through Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW), that you just have to wait it out?

"Just give it time... time is what heals."

But when you say that to someone who's years (3 or 5 or even 8 years) into TSW, that statement starts feeling like a bitter pill with no hope in sight.

Some practitioners (like myself) are finding that there are things you can do to better support your body as it goes on this journey. There's certainly no silver bullet solution as we still do not have enough research to know the best way forward.

But if you could help your system not be as reactive, that may be a win to make things more manageable for you.

My guest today, Dr. Julie Greenberg, is a licensed ND who specializes in integrative dermatology.

Join us as we discuss whether TSW really is just a "waiting game" or if there are other things you can do that can help.

I'd love to know if you have tried any of the tips that Dr. Greenberg has shared in this episode -- Let me know in the comments!

In this episode:
  • What is happening to someone going through Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW)?
  • Testing that could be helpful for TSW
  • Concerns over vastly different potencies of different types of steroid creams
  • Is TSW the ONLY thing you need to worry about at the moment (if you're experiencing it)?
  • Collagen supplementation for TSW
  • Thoughts on adaptogenic herbs -- do they have a place to support your body through TSW?
Quotes

“You have to think if you put that hydrocortisone on 600 times, that's equivalent to one dose of betamethasone or clobetasol. Some of them are 150 times, so it depends on the strength of the steroids. The surface area that you're using on, how frequently and how long have you used it. And of course, one thing that we forget to mention is that we have higher systemic absorption of these topical steroids on compromised or broken skin.”

“We know that that red, inflamed skin is vasodilation. The vessels have been constricted for so long artificially with the topical whatever you're using and now they're also bouncing back. So we get vasodilation, which means that the blood vessels are over-expanded, over dilated. We get this blood influx, which is why they have that red, inflamed skin and moisture leaking out of their skin and they're oozing.”

223: Can Eating Healthy Make My Skin Rashes Worse?02 Dec 202100:10:03

Are you one of those people whose skin gets WORSE the cleaner and healthier your diet becomes?

This is one of those things people don’t talk about that can really get someone down because diet changes are so heavily pushed as a one-stop solution to clear up your skin.

So if you’ve ever felt like you just didn’t “try hard enough” or “eat clean enough” because your skin got worse, know that you’re not alone.

Though I don’t have an exact reason WHY this happens, I do have clinical observations that I can share.

My hope is that you’ll stop blaming yourself (or thinking that you’re just doomed) and encourage you to dig deeper than food to address triggers to your skin rashes.

In this episode:
  • Answering the question: Can eating clean make your skin rashes worse?
  • What it means if your skin gets worse the cleaner + healthier your diet gets
  • Diets I’ve seen clinically cause skin rashes to get worse in some individuals
  • Connection between skin flare-ups and diet shifts
Quotes:

You are not a failure if eating “clean” or making healthy diet changes actually makes your skin rashes worse!

Those with rashes that are “diet-resistant” or worsen with a healthier diet often have gut dysbiosis.

222: Food Allergies + Skin Rashes in Kids w/ Jennifer Brand, MS, MPH, CNS23 Nov 202100:31:58

Did you know that it is possible for children to become sensitized (and even allergic) to food through the skin?

Yep... *mind blown*!

This is something that we're learning more about and that blows a hole in the concept that the only way to become sensitized to food is through the gut.

My guest today, Jennifer Brand, MPH (Master's degree in public health), MS (Master's degree in nutrition), CNS (Certified Nutrition Specialist) is an integrative and clinical nutritionist and the founder of Jennifer Caryn Brand Nutrition. She specializes in childhood skin rashes (eczema in particular, as well as psoriasis, tinea versicolor, hives, acne, vitiligo, and others), food allergies and sensitivities, and gut problems.

Jennifer’s own struggle with gut problems and disordered eating, her father’s battle with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, her brother’s diagnosis of psoriasis, and her mother’s diagnosis of vitiligo left her frustrated and stirred her search for a different approach as conventional means fell flat:

- An approach that doesn’t remove more foods from the diet. Food is not the root cause of the problem. Your body runs off of nutrients from foods you eat. When they are missing, imbalances develop, and symptoms and health problems follow, even skin rashes.
- An approach that doesn’t include stronger prescription steroid creams, and immune-modulating prescriptions that might manage symptoms but don’t address the root cause of the problem, and can cause additional problems long term.

Jennifer is a relentless detective putting her strong knowledge of nutritional biochemistry to work for you, to identify what’s driving symptoms and health problems in order to address the root cause of them.

In 2013 she opened her private, clinical nutrition practice. Jennifer left her corporate healthcare career in 2017 to focus full time on helping clients get relief.

Jennifer is a faculty member of LearnSkin, and her work has been featured in peer-reviewed scientific journals, Voyagela, as well as on podcasts, online summits, and in-person presentations at venues such as Casa Colina Hospital in California.

Join us as we discuss how food allergies can affect skin rashes in children.

Has identifying food allergies helped your little one's skin health? Let me know in the comments!

In this episode:
  • How a baby can potentially develop a food allergy at such a young age
  • Is it possible to become sensitized to a particular food through the skin barrier?
  • Connection between gut bacteria + food allergies
  • Foods that feed friendly gut bacteria
  • Problems that might come along with moisturizing rashy skin
Quotes

“When we're talking about skin allergies, that includes things like skin inflammation, eczema, hives, and contact type allergies. So when we get to the statistics here, 9.2 million children had skin allergies in 2018.” [1:33]

“One of the most interesting statistics I've come across in the literature is that two out of three kids with rashes do not have food allergies.” [2:17]

221: Do Rashes In Certain Areas Mean Something?18 Nov 202100:12:26

Have you ever wondered if the placement of your rashes actually was an important clue to your case?

I’ve been asked this A LOT!

So today I thought I’d share some clinical pearls that I’ve picked up along the way to help you become a better skin rash detective!

This observation can also help you by looking back to rash placement in the past (even when you were a child) or before the onset of Topical Steroid Withdrawal (TSW).

Especially because we know that skin rash conditions are often driven by internal inflammation.

But you have to look for those underlying (and often hidden) root causes along the way so that you can actually address them.

So let’s dive into this interesting discussion on what rashes in certain areas of the body actually mean!

In this episode:
  • What do rashes in certain areas mean?
  • Do rashes on the abdomen mean I have gut problems?
  • Rashes around your eyes and under the nose
  • Fungal hotspots (check out the graphic!)
Quotes:

In certain areas such as the armpits or groin, the skin microbiome is considered to be a damp environment making it more prone to fungal rashes.

Don’t assume that rashes around the mid-section automatically mean that you have a gut problem simply due to rash placement.

220: The Gut Microbiome Of Acne [NEW RESEARCH] w/ Dr. Julie Greenberg11 Nov 202100:43:05

If you are struggling with adult acne, today's episode is for you! This episode is celebrating new published research by Dr. Julie Greenberg on the make-up of the gut microbiome of someone whose primary complaint is acne!

These findings can help us all better know what steps can be taken to support someone struggling with acne, but it also underscores that other skin issues (like eczema) may have a very different gut microbiome diversity. Time will tell as that research eventually becomes available.

For now, let's dive into the distinct gut microbiome that tends to show up in acne!

My guest today, Dr. Julie Greenberg, is a licensed ND who specializes in integrative dermatology.

She is the founder of the Center for Integrative Dermatology, a holistic dermatology clinic that approaches skin problems by finding and treating the root cause.

Dr. Greenberg hold degrees from Northwestern University, Stanford University and Bastyr University, and received advanced clinical training at the Dermatology Clinic at the University of Washington Medical School and at the Pediatric Dermatology Center at Seattle Children’s Hospital.

She is also the Program Chair of the Naturopathic & Integrative Dermatology series on LearnSkin.com, a learning platform for integrative health care professionals.

Join us as we discuss some exciting new research into the gut microbiome and acne.

Has working on your gut health improved your acne? Let me know in the comments!

In this episode:
  • How prevalent of a problem is acne?
  • Why does acne occur?
  • The difference between a trigger and a root cause
  • Three things that typify the acne gut based on her published research
  • How much fiber do you REALLY need to eat to help with acne?
  • The problem with eating too much meat
  • Why dairy can be problematic for acne
Quotes

“Acne occurs within a hair follicle. Every acne zit or pimple that is one somebody's face, chest, back, is happening in a hair follicle.” [3:22]

“What I found was three things that kind of typify the acne gut. One is H Pylori (Helicobacter pylori)  is present. One is candida. Candida is elevated or high. And the third thing is protozoa.” [11:46]

219: Dupixent Red Face + Neck Rash Associated With Fungal Overgrowth04 Nov 202100:11:57

Did you know that about 10% of people using Dupixent develop awful face and neck dermatitis?

This issue (more officially called Dupilumab Facial Redness (DFR)) wasn’t flagged during the randomized FDA trials, but has some dermatologists concerned because DFR can be incredibly severe, just as it was for one of my clients.

Since Dupixent is a biologic drug used by some with Eczema and Topical Steroid Withdrawal to ease symptoms, this new problem isn’t ideal.

Rather than just assume that the person has a sensitivity to Dupixent, new research is showing that this may be a different problem — Malasezzia hypersensitivity.

If you recall, Malasezzia is a fungal organism that normally lives in your skin’s microbiome.

It really shouldn’t be causing an issue like this, but something about the way that Dupixent interacts with your immune system along with a compromised skin barrier could play a role.

Here are the current papers discussing this topic so you have something to bring to your prescribing dermatologist so you can get the help you need if you are experiencing this!

In this episode:

  • Facial + neck redness that occurs in about 10% of Dupixent users
  • What current research on what may be driving this weird “side effect”
  • Treatment options listed in currently published articles
  • The blood test marker that could be helpful in getting a clear diagnosis
  • What to do if YOU have face + neck redness from Dupixent

Quotes:

Approximately 10% of Dupixent users develop red, inflamed, dry, scaly and itchy face + neck rashes requiring antifungal medication treatment.

Dupixent Facial Redness was never described or mentioned in the Dupixent clinical trials for the FDA (which is surprising considering that it impacts approximately 10% of patients).

218: TCM Diet To Support Skin Rashes w/ Dr. Olivia Hsu Friedman, DACM28 Oct 202100:36:56

I often talk about how nutrition and digestion can play a role in our skin health. And there are many different dietary theories out there that have been used over the decades (and even centuries) that could be beneficial.

As you might already know, I don't think diet for many with chronic skin rashes is the only tool that should be used to help achieve healthier skin. It's one tool in the larger toolbox.

So today I'd like to share with you the Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) approach to nutrition as it could potentially relate to skin rashes.

It's honestly fascinating and this ancient method does draw some interesting conclusions about the impact of different foods on the body based on certain imbalances present.

My guest today is Dr. Olivia Hsu Friedman, DACM, L.Ac, Dipl.OM. She is the owner of Amethyst Holistic Skin Solutions and treats eczema, TSW, psoriasis, and acne patients throughout the US in person and via video conferencing using only herbal medicine.

Dr. Olivia earned a Doctorate in Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine as well as a diploma in Traditional Chinese Medicine Dermatology.

Outside of the office, Dr. Olivia serves on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Acupuncturists, the Advisory Board of LearnSkin and the faculty of the Chicago Integrative Eczema Support Group sponsored by the National Eczema Association.

Join us as we talk about how Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diets may help improve skin health.

Has a Traditional Chinese Medicine diet improved your skin rashes? Let me know in the comments!

In this episode:
  • Historical context for the TCM diet (and why this is relevant to your skin)
  • Understanding how different types of food affect your body
  • How does TCM view digestion?
  • What types of food does Dr. Friedman recommend for people with eczema and other skin conditions?
  • Should your diet change with the seasons according to TCM
  • Why bitter foods are important to incorporate into your diet
Quotes

“There was this understanding that there are foods that are on the colder side. There's foods that are on the cooler side. There are foods that are warm. There are foods that are hot. And then later on, they figured out obviously there's neutral foods too.” [5:25]

“In Chinese medicine, especially when we're putting together herbal formulas, we're always looking at balance. A lot of times when we put together formulas that are looking at these inflammatory conditions like TSW, like eczema, like psoriasis, we have a lot of herbs in there that are actually cooling in nature. However, we always make sure that there's something in there that balances that, so it's not ultra cold, so that your body has a better chance of actually not being wrecked by any one individual ingredient.” [16:23]

342: What Causes Sinusitis + Triggers Nose Rashes? Your Nasal Microbiome w/ Dr. Anastasia Stocker23 May 202400:37:07

Did you know your nasal microbiome could be a hidden trigger for non-allergenic rhinitis, sinus infections, chronic nose rashes, and even skin issues like eczema or psoriasis? When the balance of bacteria and fungi in your sinuses shifts, it can create a ripple effect of inflammation throughout the body.

In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. Anastasia Stocker, ND to explore how sinus dysbiosis can contribute to symptoms like chronic sinusitis, nasal thrush, sore throats, and more. We’ll also dive into the surprising links between the nasal microbiome and chronic skin problems.

217: Health Concerns Linked to Psoriasis (You SHOULD Know About)21 Oct 202100:14:41

Did you know that psoriasis is associated with a bunch of other health issues?

Things like hypothyroidism, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, PCOS, Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver disease, and liver fibrosis, just to name a few.

Many of my clients have no idea about these connections and have unfortunately had their concerns about other health issues blown off.

Because there is so much newer research coming about about these issues, I wanted to share some of the research that I’ve seen so that you can ask better questions and know what you should be on the lookout for.

Because psoriasis can impact so so so much more than just your skin (as if that isn’t bad enough on its own).

In this episode:
  • Health conditions often associated with psoriasis that should be on your radar
  • Blood sugar + metabolic health concerns
  • Thyroid problems — is this a big deal?
  • Why you absolutely CANNOT overlook or ignore your liver
  • Diabetic medication (or an herb I often use in practice) that can be helpful for psoriasis
Quotes:

A fascinating 2019 study found that out of the 400 patients with severe chronic plaque psoriasis, 53% were insulin resistant while 22% had type 2 diabetes.

Out of 215 patients with moderate to severe psoriasis in a 2021 study, 42.3% had some degree of Non-alcoholic Fatty Liver disease (NAFLD).

216: Could Your Rash Be A Sign Of Lymphoma? w/ Dr. Peter Lio14 Oct 202100:30:51

Most times, a skin rash is a skin rash. But sometimes, if the skin condition comes out of nowhere, and if it does not respond to treatment, it could be a sign that something else is going on.

And that something could be lymphoma.

Join us as we discuss whether your skin rash could be a sign of lymphoma.

Have you ever experienced a skin rash being a sign of something else? Tell me about it in the comments!

In this episode:
  • Can a rash start off as one thing, but become something else?
  • How can you tell whether a rash might be an indication of something else?
  • Why swollen lymph nodes should be assess by your doctor
  • What is a lipoma?
  • Could chronic hives be a sign of cancer?
Quotes

“Lipomas are really, really common. They're basically little fatty lumps. They're just a little bit of extra fat tissue, it's usually just under the skin.” [16:39]

“There are also a whole bunch of signs that are called paraneoplastic signs. These are things that are associated with cancer. And again, they're all pretty rare.” [2:02]

215: Probiotic Tips While Taking Antibiotics (from a Nutritionist)07 Oct 202100:18:54

Have you had that dreaded diarrhea after you start a round of antibiotics?

And maybe you worry that if you take probiotics, doing so while taking the antibiotics will just “cancel them out.”

You’re not wrong to think this because timing is everything when it comes to taking probiotics while on antibiotics!

Thanks to my recent 3-week course of antibiotics after finding a gross blood-filled tick in between my toes, I got a lot of questions about what my probiotic regimen looked like.

That’s why I want to answer your questions about the do’s and don’t’s of probiotic supplementation while taking antibiotics.

And offer you insight into how you can approach probiotics so that they do what they’re supposed to do!

Otherwise, your worst fear (that the antibiotics will kill them all) will come true and you’ll potentially get stuck dealing with that dreaded antibiotic-triggered diarrhea.

In this episode:
  • Why you might need antibiotics even though you’d rather not take them
  • How to take probiotics so that antibiotics don’t “cancel them out”
  • Foods to help support your gut flora during antibiotics
  • Are yogurt + other fermented foods enough (or is a supplement better)?
  • Why probiotics taken during antibiotics could be really helpful
  • When taking probiotics with antibiotics might NOT be necessary
Quotes:

If you don’t want your probiotic “canceled out”, take probiotic supplements 2-3 hours before or after a dose of antibiotics.

Probiotics are helpful during a course of antibiotics, but so are the fibers you choose to eat during this time too!
