Cell Signaling, Mitochondria & the Foundation of Cellular Health with Dr. Gus Vickery22 Aug 202600:57:20
Cell Signaling, Mitochondria & the Foundation of Cellular Health with Dr. Gus Vickery

What if the reason you feel tired, foggy, inflamed, or simply not quite like yourself begins much deeper than you think—at the level of your cells?

In this episode of The Healthy CEO, Jason Wright welcomes back physician and Authentic Health co-founder Dr. Gus Vickery for a deep dive into one of the most fundamental—and often overlooked—components of health: cell signaling.

Our cells aren't isolated little machines. They're constantly communicating with one another, responding to nutrients, hormones, inflammation, stress, toxins, the nervous system, and even our thoughts and environment. When those signals are clear and the cellular machinery is functioning properly, the body can adapt and perform remarkably well.

But when those signaling pathways become disrupted, the effects can show up everywhere.

Dr. Vickery explains how impaired cellular function can manifest as fatigue, brain fog, inflammation, anxiety, poor sleep, reduced cognitive performance, aches and pains, and diminished energy—sometimes long before someone develops a diagnosable disease.

Jason and Gus also explore the crucial role of the mitochondria, the energy-producing structures inside our cells. Using the analogy of a car and its engine, they break down why mitochondrial efficiency isn't simply about producing more energy. The health and integrity of mitochondrial membranes can profoundly influence how effectively that energy-production system operates.

The conversation then moves to another overlooked part of cellular health: the cell membrane.

Rather than simply being a protective wall around a cell, the membrane is an active participant in communication and signaling. Its composition—including omega-3 fatty acids, phospholipids and other nutrients—can influence membrane fluidity, inflammatory signaling and cellular function.

Dr. Vickery explains how testing can reveal imbalances in membrane composition, including low omega-3 levels, elevated saturated fats and deficiencies in important phospholipids. He also discusses why lifestyle and environmental factors appear to play such an important role in mitochondrial dysfunction, even when genetics influence an individual's underlying resilience.

The episode concludes with the origin story behind Authentic Health's F2 formulation. Gus explains how years of clinical experience led him from simply supplementing omega-3s to thinking more comprehensively about phospholipids, fat-soluble nutrients, CoQ10 and the other components necessary to support membrane and mitochondrial health.

The result was an attempt to simplify what had previously required numerous individual supplements into a more integrated foundational approach.

In This Episode
  • What cell signaling actually means and why it matters
  • How cells communicate within tissues and throughout the body
  • Why disrupted signaling may appear as fatigue, brain fog, inflammation and poor mood
  • The difference between dysfunction and disease
  • Why mitochondrial dysfunction can occur before diagnosable disease
  • The "car engine" analogy for understanding mitochondrial health
  • Why mitochondrial membranes are critical to energy production
  • How damaged or dysfunctional membranes may reduce mitochondrial efficiency
  • Why the cell membrane is much more than a protective shell
  • Understanding membrane fluidity
  • The role of omega-3 fatty acids, including EPA and DHA
  • Why phospholipids such as phosphatidylcholine matter
  • How saturated fats and fatty-acid composition affect membrane structure
  • Genetics vs. lifestyle in mitochondrial dysfunction
  • How Dr. Vickery evaluates mitochondrial and cellular health
  • The difference between conventional primary care and a more integrative diagnostic approach
  • Why nutrient insufficiency can exist even before obvious deficiency or disease
  • The importance of reducing harmful exposures while restoring essential nutrients
  • How Gus's clinical protocol evolved into the F2 essential fats formulation
  • Why rebuilding cellular and mitochondrial health should be viewed as a long-term process rather than a quick fix

Key Takeaway

Health doesn't begin with treating disease. It begins with giving the body what it needs to communicate, produce energy, repair itself and adapt appropriately.

As Dr. Vickery explains, dysfunction can exist long before a physician can put a diagnostic label on it. Addressing foundational cellular health earlier may offer an opportunity to support better function before dysfunction becomes more deeply established.

And that means thinking beyond symptoms and asking a more fundamental question:

What do my cells actually need to function the way they were designed to function?

About Dr. Gus Vickery

Dr. Gus Vickery is a physician with decades of clinical experience whose work has evolved from traditional primary care toward an integrative, precision-health approach focused on understanding and addressing the underlying drivers of dysfunction.

His clinical experience and research into nutrient status, mitochondrial biology and cellular membrane health also informed the development of the Authentic Health foundational formulations discussed in this episode.

Greasing the Groove: The Smarter Way to Build Strength as You Age21 Aug 202600:21:06
Greasing the Groove: The Smarter Way to Build Strength as You Age

What if getting stronger didn’t require crushing yourself in the gym?

In this episode of The Healthy CEO, Jason Wright kicks off a new series on strength, muscle, and longevity by exploring one of the most practical strength-training concepts he’s encountered: “Greasing the Groove,” popularized by legendary strength coach Pavel Tsatsouline.

As we age, maintaining strength and lean muscle becomes increasingly important—not simply for how we look, but for how well we function. Muscle supports metabolic health, physical resilience, mobility, and our ability to continue doing the things we love as we get older.

But building strength doesn’t necessarily mean training to exhaustion.

Pavel’s Greasing the Groove philosophy approaches strength differently: treat strength like a skill and practice it frequently without exhausting yourself.

Jason breaks down the philosophy before sharing Pavel’s explanation of why frequent, high-quality repetitions can train the nervous system to become more efficient at producing strength.

In This Episode
  • Why strength training should be a cornerstone of longevity
  • The importance of maintaining lean muscle as we age
  • Why Jason is placing a greater emphasis on building strength
  • Pavel Tsatsouline’s philosophy of simply getting stronger
  • What “Greasing the Groove” actually means
  • Why strength can be viewed as a skill
  • The difference between spaced practice and cramming
  • How repeated practice strengthens the neural pathways between the brain and muscles
  • Why you don't need to train to failure to get stronger
  • Pavel’s concept of using a weight that is “heavy enough to respect and light enough not to fear”
  • Why Greasing the Groove typically uses only about half the repetitions you could perform
  • How frequent, non-exhaustive strength work can accumulate significant training volume
  • Why staying fresh may allow you to practice strength more frequently
  • How to incorporate Greasing the Groove into a normal day
  • Why Pavel recommends significant rest between sets
  • The relationship between strength, practice, skill acquisition, and neurological adaptation
  • Why the goal is the perfect rep, not simply more reps

The Basic Greasing the Groove Concept

Rather than performing a traditional workout where you exhaust a muscle group, Greasing the Groove emphasizes practicing a strength movement repeatedly while remaining relatively fresh.

Pavel describes a general approach of:

Moderately heavy weight.

Low repetitions.

High-quality reps.

Long rest periods.

Frequent practice.

Avoiding exhaustion.

The objective is to repeatedly practice the movement so the nervous system becomes increasingly efficient at producing it.

In Pavel's words, you're essentially “greasing” the neurological groove between your brain and your muscles.

Over time, the same movement can require less effort—or you can apply greater force and become stronger.

A Practical Example

If you could perform approximately eight maximum reps with a given weight, a Greasing the Groove approach might have you perform only three or four high-quality repetitions.

Then you stop.

You rest.

And later, you practice the movement again.

Instead of asking:

“How hard can I train?”

The better question becomes:

“How frequently can I practice strength while still staying fresh?”

That subtle change in thinking is what makes Greasing the Groove such an interesting approach to building sustainable strength.

Jason's Takeaway

As we get older, strength becomes increasingly valuable.

This isn't about chasing a bodybuilding physique or spending your life in the gym. It's about creating a body capable of supporting the life you want to live.

Jason is experimenting with new ways to increase his own strength and lean body mass, and this episode begins a larger Healthy CEO series exploring the training methods, tools, and strategies that can help us remain strong and capable as we age.

The message is simple:

Get stronger. Stay strong. And practice strength for life.

The Root Cause of Addiction & the Path to Your Authentic Self | Pax Prentiss10 Aug 202601:08:37
The Root Cause of Addiction & the Path to Your Authentic Self | Pax Prentiss

What if addiction isn't the problem itself—but a symptom of something deeper?

On this episode of The Healthy CEO, Jason Wright sits down with Pax Prentiss, co-founder and CEO of Passages Malibu and co-author of The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure.

Pax's story is extraordinary. After struggling with heroin, cocaine, and alcohol addiction for nearly a decade, repeated attempts at traditional treatment failed to produce lasting sobriety. Eventually, Pax and his father began asking a different question:

Why was he using in the first place?

That question changed everything.

Rather than focusing exclusively on managing addiction, Pax began addressing the underlying issues driving his substance use. That experience eventually became the foundation for Passages Malibu and its individualized, holistic approach to treatment.

Jason and Pax explore addiction, recovery, mental health, family dynamics, physical wellness, and the growing normalization of substances in American culture. But the conversation ultimately becomes something even bigger: How do we stop escaping from our lives and become the healthiest, most authentic versions of ourselves?

In This Episode

Jason and Pax discuss:

  • Pax's personal journey from heroin addiction to more than two decades of sobriety
  • The question his father asked that changed his recovery: "Why do you think you're using?"
  • Why Pax believes addiction can be a symptom of deeper underlying conditions
  • Depression, anxiety, trauma, stress, insecurity, low self-esteem, and other factors that can contribute to substance use
  • Why treating the whole person—body, mind, and spirit—is central to the Passages philosophy
  • How individualized therapy differs from traditional group-based treatment
  • Why escaping uncomfortable emotions can prevent real healing
  • The importance of confronting problems rather than continually numbing them
  • Marijuana, today's higher-potency products, and Pax's concerns about normalization of recreational drug use
  • Ketamine therapy and the addiction cases Pax says he is increasingly encountering
  • Psychedelic-assisted approaches to trauma and why Pax personally favors clear-headed, individualized therapy
  • How families can recognize when helping has crossed the line into enabling
  • When families should consider working with a professional interventionist
  • Why recovery doesn't end when someone leaves a treatment center
  • The importance of aftercare and creating a healthy home environment
  • Why family members may need to change their own relationship with alcohol when someone returns from treatment
  • The example parents set for their children around drinking, marijuana, and other substances
  • Why Jason and Pax both believe an alcohol-free lifestyle can be transformative
  • Sleep, nutrition, exercise, mental clarity, and their role in rebuilding a healthy life
  • Identity-based habits and becoming the person you actually want to be
  • Why recovery isn't about creating a new person—it's about rediscovering the person underneath the addiction

The Bigger Idea: Becoming Your Authentic Self

One of the most powerful themes of the conversation is that recovery isn't simply about removing drugs or alcohol.

It's about rebuilding a life.

Pax describes a whole-person approach that addresses psychological, physical, relational, and spiritual health. The objective isn't simply sobriety. It's helping someone rediscover who they are without the substance—and begin moving toward the healthiest version of that person.

Jason connects this philosophy to his own pursuit of health and personal development: the idea that genuine wellness can't be one-dimensional.

Physical health matters.

Mental clarity matters.

Relationships matter.

Purpose matters.

Spiritual health matters.

And the environments and habits we build around ourselves matter.

Ultimately, the goal is not perfection.

It's continuing to move toward your authentic self.

About Pax Prentiss

Pax Prentiss is the co-founder and CEO of Passages Malibu. His own experience with addiction and recovery inspired the creation of an individualized treatment model focused on identifying and addressing underlying conditions associated with substance use.

Passages opened in 2001 and uses a multidisciplinary approach involving medical, clinical, therapeutic, physical, and spiritual components of recovery.

Pax is also the co-author of The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure and says Passages has helped more than 40,000 people pursue sobriety and recovery.

Need Help?

Pax personally continues to speak with individuals and families seeking treatment and takes admission calls for Passages.

Passages Admissions: 310-589-2880

Passages operates locations in Malibu and Ventura, California. Pax explains in the episode that the Ventura location works in-network with many insurance plans, while insurance may also contribute toward treatment at the Malibu location.

If you or someone you love is struggling with substance use, seek qualified professional help. Treatment decisions should be made with appropriate medical and mental-health professionals.

Authentic Health

Recovery and long-term wellness involve more than removing unhealthy behaviors. Nutrition, sleep, movement, and providing the body with the nutrients it needs are all part of creating an environment where better health is possible.

Unlongevity: Escaping Optimization Culture With VimedCell Founders Ramona Roemer & Andreas Heigl

Host Jason Wright interviews Ramona Roemer and Andreas Heigl, co-founders of VimedCell, a longevity clinic in Switzerland and Germany, about their book Unlongevity: Escaping Optimization Culture to Restore Health, Meaning, and a Life That Fits (out August 11).

They discuss how high-performing clients often overuse biohacking, wearables, supplements, and protocols, creating stress and losing clarity despite heavy effort. Drawing on nearly 20 years of clinical work, they propose an integrative framework across biology, cognition, emotion, energy, and purpose, emphasizing discernment, timing, alignment, and individualized priorities rather than standardized protocols.

They share an example of a founder whose cognition improved after addressing cortisol dysregulation and reducing stimulants and supplement load. They explain their patient intake process, focus on trust-building and observation, and aim to empower clients with transparent reports for coordination with their own doctors.

30 Grams of Protein at Breakfast: The Simple Habit for Metabolism, Muscle, and Longevity In this Healthy CEO podcast episode, Jason argues that “winning the morning” includes strategically timing nutrition, especially getting at least 30 grams of protein at breakfast, to improve metabolism, body composition, energy, and aging. He challenges the assumption that skipping breakfast or only drinking coffee until noon is always healthier, noting research suggesting how you break a fast affects fat loss, muscle preservation, metabolic health, cognitive performance, and longevity. He explains protein’s benefits—higher thermic effect, better blood sugar stability, and greater satiety—and links muscle to healthy aging, citing age-related muscle loss and the role of mTOR and leucine (about 2.5–3 grams per meal). He gives breakfast protein examples and suggests essential amino acids as a practical option for intermittent fasters to support muscle without a full meal, recommending a one-week experiment. 00:00 Morning Protein Setup 01:02 30g Breakfast Challenge 01:44 Fasting and Metabolism 02:54 Why 30g Works 03:56 Muscle and mTOR 05:05 What 30g Looks Like 05:24 EAAs for Intermittent Fasters 06:57 Longevity and Weekly Experiment 08:10 Wrap Up and Disclaimer

Should You Supplement for NAD?16 May 202600:28:47

Supplements Aren’t the Answer: Exercise, Blood Work, and the NAD Hype Jason Wright, co-founder and CEO of Authentic Health Partners, explains why he gets frustrated when people ask what supplements to take before addressing basics like exercise, sleep, hydration, diet, stress, and relationships. Using questions about NAD (often via NR/NMN precursors or injections) as the catalyst, he says there’s no panacea and nothing will outperform movement, sunshine, and avoiding over-nourishment; he notes calorie restriction is strongly correlated with longevity in studies but not proven causal. He describes Huberman’s NAD use as anecdotal and cautions against copying a “one person study” without considering the full lifestyle context and overall cellular health. Wright recommends getting blood work, consulting a physician, doing research (including randomized controlled trials), and keeping supplementation simple; personally he takes his company’s foundational stack plus creatine and glutathione, and warns GLP-1 users about under-nourishing and losing muscle. 00:00 Why Supplements Trigger Me 01:52 Fix The Basics First 04:09 Longevity Talk Calorie Restriction 05:55 NAD Explained And The Hype 08:49 Huberman N Of One Reality 12:32 How I Answer NAD Questions 16:02 What I Actually Take Daily 17:28 Cell Health Car Engine Analogy 22:21 No Panacea Holistic Health 23:47 GLP 1 Caution And Muscle Loss 25:47 Do Your Homework Closing 27:42 Medical Disclaimer

Creatine Beyond Muscle: Cognitive Benefits, Supplement Basics, and Pragmatic Sports Nutrition with Dr. Jose Antonio Jason Wright interviews Dr. Jose Antonio about creatine’s mainstream status, dosing (3–5 g/day vs. 10–20 g/day), and emerging cognition data, noting higher doses may be needed to raise brain creatine and benefits appear mainly under stress such as sleep deprivation, with vegans/vegetarians responding more. Antonio argues for a pragmatic approach that values RCTs but also real-world evidence, and debunks myths about “better” creatine forms (monohydrate is best studied), puffiness, and liver/kidney harm. He recommends focusing on exercise first, then basics like post-workout protein, creatine, a multivitamin, and omega-3s, with performance aids (sodium bicarbonate, beta-alanine, nitrates, carbs) depending on sport. They discuss EAAs, fasting, GLP-1 weight loss and lean mass loss, and Antonio’s current research on energy drinks (mostly caffeine), beta-hydroxybutyrate, and a planned creatine/eye-tracking study relevant to sports. "Revolutionizing Health: Hannah Anderson on the MAHA Movement"08 May 202600:58:27

Hannah Anderson on MAHA, Prevention, and Cutting Through Healthcare Bureaucracy On The Healthy CEO, host Jason interviews Hannah Anderson, AFPI’s director of health policy and former deputy chief of staff for Robert F. Kennedy at HHS, about advancing MAHA from a wellness rallying cry into actionable policy. Anderson describes her Texas roots, her path into health policy, and the challenge of executing reforms inside a massive bureaucracy where incentives favor slowness and process can be used to obstruct priorities. She explains AFPI’s role in transition planning and in developing patient-first ideas, especially around prevention, wearables, and making healthcare dollars support proactive health rather than only government-defined “preventive” services under the USPSTF framework. The discussion contrasts U.S. acute-care excellence with poor prevention, critiques diagnose-and-prescribe medicine, and emphasizes practical, broadly accessible MAHA principles: solutions for everyone, realistic 70% adherence, and individual responsibility for taking back one’s health. 00:00 Welcome and Guest Intro 00:44 Sponsor Foundational Stack 02:22 Meet Hannah On Air 04:55 Texas Roots and MAHA 06:20 From Spring to DC 08:09 Making HHS About Health 13:33 Cutting Through Bureaucracy 22:24 Why She Joined AFPI 25:56 Prevention and Wearables 29:07 Obamacare Prevention Rules 29:58 Symptoms Over Root Causes 32:23 Primary Care Burnout 34:17 Prevention Versus Rescue Care 35:13 Wearables For Self Insight 37:47 CGM Sleep Food Lessons 40:25 Data Driven Prevention Policy 48:21 Making Maha For Everyone 53:21 Incentives For Healthy Metrics 55:40 Take Back Your Health 57:13 Closing And Medical Disclaimer

Dr. Joe Jacko on Longevity, Testosterone, and Taking Control of Your Health14 Apr 202600:51:52

Healthy CEO Show: Dr. Joe Jacko on Longevity, Testosterone, and Taking Control of Your Health Host Jason Wright interviews Dr. Joe Jacko about regenerative medicine, longevity, and his critique of modern “sick care.” Jacko recounts his path from internal and sports medicine into men’s health and a concierge-style practice focused on lifestyle, hormone replacement, and comprehensive testing, arguing medical training and care are shaped by pharmaceutical funding, insurance limits, and hospital employment. They discuss testosterone therapy (targeting symptom improvement and upper-third reference ranges), common low-testosterone symptoms, and why standard primary-care labs often omit testosterone. Jacko outlines how fee-for-service restricts time and testing, contrasts it with integrated models like We Are The Armory, and explains his book, influenced by COVID-era concerns about research presentation and industry influence. Practical takeaways include prioritizing nutrition, strength training, sleep, stress management, learning, and purpose; using GLP-1s only with strength training and diet support; fasting/sauna habits; and exploring broader functional testing while avoiding overreacting to isolated abnormal results. 00:00 Show Opening 00:26 Meet Dr Joe Jocko 01:40 From Sports to Longevity 03:12 Testosterone Replacement Basics 05:06 Symptoms Over Lab Ranges 06:58 Why Primary Care Misses It 09:59 Sick Care System Origins 12:21 Fee for Service Pressures 14:31 Holistic Concierge Model 19:19 Writing Bamboozled Duped 22:53 Building Patient Agency 25:32 Natural Testosterone Boosters 28:05 Cardio Only Wakeup Call 28:41 Resistance Training For Longevity 30:41 GLP One Muscle Loss Risks 32:37 Longevity First Principles 34:48 Daily Habits Fasting Sauna 37:00 Mindset Hacks For Movement 40:00 Protein Keto And Meal Timing 41:43 Fasting As Calorie Restriction 45:29 Healthspan Thesis And Advocacy 47:52 Labs Gut Health And Testing 49:55 Where To Find Dr Jacko 50:48 Medical Disclaimer Closing

Dr. Jerry Mixon on Longevity Medicine: Hormones, Body Fat, Muscle, and Senescent Cells25 Mar 202601:22:25

Dr. Jerry Mixon on Longevity Medicine: Hormones, Body Fat, Muscle, and Senescent Cells Dr. Jerry Mixon describes “longevity medicine” as treating aging—the progressive loss of capacity—as a medical problem focused on healthspan, not vanity. He shares that at 78 he has maintained a global hormone balance targeted to a healthy 25-year-old range for 31 years, enabling significant strength and endurance gains compared with age 50, and argues more older men should live energetic lives. Mixon emphasizes reducing excess body fat as a priority because fat acts as an inflammatory gland linked to chronic disease, while muscle acts as a healing gland producing beneficial proteins; he advocates building muscle and managing blood sugar/insulin resistance. He explains mitochondrial fragility, senescent “zombie” cells, and immune-system decline, discusses using senolytics such as dasatinib plus quercetin, and describes developing testing to measure senescent T-cell load. The conversation also covers clinic protocols, lifestyle micro-bursts of exercise, family priorities, and aligning healthcare incentives toward prevention. 00:00 Rewriting Old Age 01:46 Longevity Medicine Defined 03:24 Aging as Disease 05:05 How We Peak and Decline 06:15 What Aging Really Is 08:24 From 50 to 78 11:38 Mindset and Metrics 14:52 Start With Getting Lean 17:13 Fat vs Muscle Signals 18:56 Hormones Back to 25 20:26 Testosterone Myths 24:07 Risks and Screening 25:54 Inside the Clinic Process 29:00 Fat Inflammation Cascade 33:20 Insulin Resistance Explained 36:32 GLP-1s and Muscle 37:45 Mitochondria 101 41:14 Senescent Cell Zombies 42:41 Autophagy and Immune Cleanup 44:31 Immune System Senescence 46:10 Hormones and Senescent Load 48:54 Clearing Senescent Cells 50:33 Lifestyle Levers Exercise 53:21 Senolytics and Measuring SASP 56:54 Testing Immune Senescence 58:29 COVID and Aging Immunity 01:01:17 Personal Results and Routine 01:08:26 Family Legacy and Purpose 01:12:54 Reforming Healthcare Incentives 01:19:42 Wrap Up and Disclaimer

Next Level Skin Care-Dr. Nyan Patel on Glutathione Delivery, Peptides, and a New Skincare Line25 Feb 202601:04:19

Jason interviews Dr. Nyan Patel about 26 years of research on peptides and glutathione, which Patel describes as a “worker bee” peptide that does work rather than signaling. Patel explains why oral, liposomal, and even IV glutathione fail to reliably reach cells, and how he developed a topical, polysaccharide-based delivery method that transfers cell-to-cell and uses mucosal routes, with skin as the most practical. They discuss glutathione decline starting around ages 30–35, lifestyle and environmental depleters (alcohol, smoke, pollutants, detergents), and Patel’s view that boosting levels can improve health span. The conversation transitions to Patel’s new skincare products, including GHK copper tripeptide, vitamin C “citrine,” and simplified serums/creams designed for absorption, plus practical advice on hydration and sleep.

Unlocking Optimal Health: The Rebel Health Journey

John Goldman is an entrepreneur and health-optimization advocate best known as the founder of Rebel Health Alliance (RHA), a membership-based personalized health and wellness company that aims to offer integrated, customized medical guidance beyond typical primary care.

Goldman’s journey into health advocacy began from his own frustrations with conventional healthcare. Despite regular checkups and following standard medical advice, he experienced persistent fatigue, brain fog, and declining well-being. After consulting with a friend in the health-optimization space and dramatically improving his own health through access to elite medical resources, he became determined to democratize that kind of care. This led him to launch Rebel Health Alliance, with the stated goal of breaking down barriers between traditional healthcare and tailored, patient-focused preventative and optimization medicine.

Under his leadership, RHA promotes coordinated care through an interdisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including physicians, dietitians, genetic counselors, and wellness coaches. The approach integrates advanced diagnostics, personalized planning, and lifestyle guidance, aiming to help members optimize health outcomes rather than just treat illness.

In this episode of The Healthy CEO, Jason sits down with John to discuss his personal health transformation and the genesis of Rebel Health. They delve into the importance of comprehensive health assessments, the impact of lifestyle changes, and how Rebel Health offers world-class, full-spectrum health services to optimize wellness. John shares practical advice for those looking to assess their own health metrics and emphasizes the significance of leading a healthy lifestyle for both personal benefit and as an example for family. Her mission is to help individuals and leaders align their lives with their core values and achieve profound personal transformation.

Surrendering is a choice that took years of work of shedding layers of heartbreak and trauma that kept me in a deep darkness and pain. It took many years of aching, yearning, and praying for a change. I pretended I was okay, and lied to myself often because I honestly didn’t know how deeply trauma and codependency was interwoven into the fabric of my life.

During my darkest point, of my worst heartbreak – I was introduced to yoga and began a deep discovery of myself. I found the practice to be truly life changing. Since starting yoga, I’ve healed codependency of people, and alcohol, overcame anxiety, depression & panic attacks. I also worked with a life coach to help me remove my limiting beliefs and repair my low self worth that kept me stuck in a cycle of toxic people and self hatred of my body and myself.

Over time, I was able to heal emotional and physical trauma in my body through the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda, and I healed spiritually through the path of surrendering to my Creator’s love and forgiveness. This was the only way to fill the giant hole in my soul – a path of surrender is truly how all my suffering came to an end. I’ve rediscovered my inherent worth, and have forgiven those who have hurt me the most – including myself.

Today I am a Certified Yoga Teacher, Ayurvedic practitioner, a Life coach and I lead transformational retreats and am incredibly passionate about helping my students heal their mind, body & soul. I believe all suffering is a choice, and every human deserves to experience love at the highest level, free of pain. I invite you to begin your journey of discovering you today by beginning in one of my Yoga classes, Master Classes, Coaching, Workshops or retreat. You are worthy of healing and deserve the deepest level of love.

The PERFECT Protein Shake: As Prescribed by Dr. Troy Jackson19 Aug 202400:58:57

I know protein shakes are synonymous with "Bro Science" but the simple fact is, they are incredibly useful. In fact, Dr. Troy has yet to find a downside to a good nutrient rich protein shake.

That's why we are dedicating and entire episode to the protein shake. That's right "Bro-cephus" we're going all in on the "Bro-tein" baby. So sit back and enjoy the smoothie texture of this episode of The Healthy CEO.

Optimal Nutrition: Crafting the Perfect Protein Shake

In this episode of The Healthy CEO Podcast, Dr. Troy Jackson and host Jason Wright delve into the benefits and simplicity of creating nutrient-dense protein shakes. They discuss ingredient selection, including the pros and cons of whey versus plant-based protein powders, the use of fruits, vegetables, fats, and fiber, and share their personal recipes. Additionally, they explore the differences between smoothies and juices and the practical advantages of incorporating protein shakes into one’s diet for improved health and body composition.

Jason's "Green Monster" Shake

2 servings of Standard Gold Whey Double Chocolate Protein Powder

2 Cups of non sweetened vanilla or plain almond milk

1 scoop of your choice of powdered greens

1 cup frozen spinach

1 cup frozen blue berries

1 serving 5g creatine

1 serving vital proteins collagen

1 tbs extra virgin olive oil

1 serving chlorella powder

1 tbs organic cacao powder

Dr. Troy Sample smoothie recipe:

-3/4 cup of water or unsweetened almond or soy milk

-1/2 cup of Keifer or plain greek yogurt (remove if calories is a concern)

-1 scoop of protein powder

-1 scoop of creatine

-1 cup of frozen mixed berries

-1/2 banana (fresh or frozen)

-5-6 small leaves or 2 large leaf of kale (or a handful of spinach)

-1/4 cup of frozen riced cauliflower

-1/3-1/2 cup of black beans (if using chocolate protein powder) or white beans/chickpeas (if using vanilla protein powder) -- trust me!

-2 tbsp of ground flaxseed, chia seeds, or hemp hearts (I make a 1:1:1 mixture)

-A splash of water if it gets too thick

This smoothie is roughly 400 calories, 48g of protein, and 14-18g of fiber.

You can just do protein powder and almond milk to get it down to 150 calories and 25g of

protein.

Don't Be Dumb! Stop Trying to Have a Hollywood Figure. Make "Healthy" The Goal03 Aug 202400:17:34

In this episode, we tackle the unrealistic expectations set by Hollywood and how striving to look like on-screen actors, such as Daniel Craig in Casino Royale, can be both unhealthy and unproductive. While it's tempting to aim for the chiselled physique and flawless appearance we see in movies, it's important to remember that these portrayals are often the result of intense training, strict diets, and perfect lighting—things that aren't sustainable or realistic for most of us.

Instead of chasing an idealized image, let's focus on what truly matters: being healthy. We'll discuss practical and attainable ways to improve your fitness and well-being without the pressure of looking like a movie star. Join us as we redefine health and wellness, putting your well-being first and embracing a balanced, realistic approach to fitness.

Remember, your goal should be to feel strong, energized, and confident in your own skin, not to emulate an impossible Hollywood standard. Let's shift our focus from superficial aesthetics to genuine health and happiness.

The Mother of All Longevity Measurements: Vo2Max27 Jul 202400:12:39

Studies have shown a strong correlation between VO2 Max and longevity. For instance, research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association indicates that higher levels of cardiorespiratory fitness are associated with lower risks of all-cause mortality. This means that individuals with a higher VO2 Max tend to live longer and have a lower risk of dying from diseases like heart disease, stroke, and even certain cancers.

One landmark study followed over 50,000 adults for more than a decade. The results were compelling—those with the highest VO2 Max levels had a significantly lower risk of death compared to those with the lowest levels. In fact, the study suggested that improving your VO2 Max could be one of the most effective strategies for increasing your lifespan.

Zone 2 Measurements:

Sure! Here are several ways to determine if you are in Zone 2, which is a moderate-intensity exercise zone that helps improve endurance and metabolic health:

Ways to Determine If You Are in Zone 2:

1. Heart Rate Monitoring:

- Heart Rate Range: Zone 2 typically corresponds to 60-70% of your maximum heart rate.

- Calculation: Maximum Heart Rate (MHR) can be roughly estimated using the formula \(220 - \text{age}\). Zone 2 heart rate range would then be \(0.6 \times \text{MHR}\) to \(0.7 \times \text{MHR}\).

2. Talk Test: (My favorite)

- You should be able to carry on a conversation comfortably. If you can speak in full sentences without gasping for air, you’re likely in Zone 2.

3. Perceived Exertion:

- On a scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is very light activity and 10 is maximum effort, Zone 2 should feel like a 3 to 4. You should feel like you are working, but it should be sustainable.

4. Lactate Threshold:

- During Zone 2 exercise, blood lactate levels should be relatively low, typically around 2 mmol/L. This is difficult to measure without specific equipment, but it indicates that you are working at a level where your body can clear lactate as quickly as it produces it.

5. Breathing Pattern:

- Your breathing should be steady and controlled, not labored. You should not feel like you need to pant or breathe heavily.

6. Duration:

- You should be able to maintain Zone 2 intensity for an extended period (typically 30-60 minutes or more) without significant fatigue.

7. Pace Consistency:

- Your pace should feel sustainable and consistent. If you’re running or cycling, you should be able to maintain the same speed for the entire duration of the exercise.

8. Talk-Walk Ratio:

- During a brisk walk or light jog, you should be able to speak a few sentences, breathe, and continue the conversation without too much strain.

By using these methods, you can relatively gauge whether you are exercising in Zone 2, ensuring you get the maximum benefits from your moderate-intensity workouts.

Study Finds Older Adults CAN Improve Fitness As Much As Younger Adults!25 Jul 202400:26:56

Many people believe because they've reached a certain age physical training is no longer effective.

This is hogwash! A study showed that two groups (one of adults age 80+/- 4years) and one of (adults 40 +/- 4 years) saw the SAME increase in fitness after a 6 week training program.

Here's a link to the study.

Here's the abstract from the study:

Mitochondrial dysfunction is thought to be involved in age-related loss of muscle mass and function (sarcopenia). Since the degree of physical activity is vital for skeletal muscle mitochondrial function and content, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 6 weeks of aerobic exercise training and 8 weeks of deconditioning on functional parameters of aerobic capacity and markers of muscle mitochondrial function in elderly compared to young individuals. In 11 healthy, elderly (80 ± 4 years old) and 10 healthy, young (24 ± 3 years old) volunteers, aerobic training improved maximal oxygen consumption rate by 13%, maximal workload by 34%, endurance capacity by 2.4-fold and exercise economy by 12% in the elderly to the same extent as in young individuals. This evidence was accompanied by a similar training-induced increase in muscle citrate synthase (CS) (31%) and mitochondrial complex I-IV activities (51-163%) in elderly and young individuals. After 8 weeks of deconditioning, endurance capacity (-20%), and enzyme activity of CS (-18%) and complex I (-40%), III (-25%), and IV (-26%) decreased in the elderly to a larger extent than in young individuals. In conclusion, we found that elderly have a physiological normal ability to improve aerobic capacity and mitochondrial function with aerobic training compared to young individuals, but had a faster decline in endurance performance and muscle mitochondrial enzyme activity after deconditioning, suggesting an age-related issue in maintaining oxidative metabolism.

Steve Johnston, MD, MBA: A Dad Fighting Against Blindness22 Jul 202400:45:21
Meet Luke, The Inspiration for The Race Against Blindness
Luke, at just 10 years old, displays an exceptional level of empathy.

He possesses a rare ability to perceive when others are in distress or need help. Such deep concern for others is unusual, especially for someone of his age. Moreover, he is profoundly kind-hearted and exudes a gentle and compassionate nature. He genuinely cares for his family, his pets, and his friends.

Luke’s capacity to genuinely appreciate and absorb the nuances of the world around him sets him apart. Though he may be reserved, his profound connection to the world and the people in it is unmistakable.

Finally, Luke is remarkably resilient for a child his age. He has faced significant physical and emotional challenges throughout his young life. He has endured multiple hospitalizations due to severe illnesses, including surgeries and even broken bones. Despite these adversities, he consistently bounces back and surmounts each obstacle.

Steve Johnston, MD, MBA

Dad vs. Blindness

The success of any organization is critically dependent on the importance of its mission to key members. Upon receiving the diagnosis that his son was going blind, nothing has been more important to Steve than championing the mission of A Race Against Blindness: support research and find a cure for retinitis pigmentosa caused by Bardet-Biedel Syndrome. Steve is uniquely qualified to achieve that goal. He is an MD/MBA with a vast understanding of the healthcare system, coupled with real-world experience in building companies, leading teams, and solving complex challenges.

We founded the nonprofit when we found out our son has a rare genetic condition and is slowly going blind. But that really only scratches the surface in terms of our motivation. Since learning of Luke’s diagnosis , we have become strongly connected to the rare-diseases community. While rare diseases are actually not unusual, with more than 7,000 diseases classified by the FDA as rare, each one individually often affects only a small number of people. Thus many rare diseases don’t receive enough attention and resources to help fund research for adequate treatments or even possible cures.

James Barry, Founder Pluck Seasonings28 Jun 202401:29:24

Hi, I’m James, founder of Pluck.

At Pluck, we’re all about organ meats, yet not just any organ meats. Quality is everything when eating any part of an animal. We define quality as grass-fed, grass-finished, humanely treated, pasture-raised animals raised with no GMOs or hormones. “As close to nature as possible” is what I say.

There’s a lot of what is wrong in our current agricultural systems, but more and more farms are pivoting to what is right: Regenerative Agriculture. With diverse crop coverage and no tilling we can change not only the food produced on these farms but our health as well. We are what we eat AND what we eat eats.

Ancestral principles of “like supports like” and nose-to-tail eating drive our mission at Pluck. We are missing out on the whole animal benefits when we only eat muscle meat. Pluck is the perfect gateway into eating organs because it doesn’t taste like organ meat. What you taste is the savory, deliciousness of Umami (the fifth taste). Eating organs support the health of your organs. Even better, organs contain bioavailable nutrients which means you get more “bang-for-your-buck” because your body can recognize and absorb these essential vitamins and nutrients.

Look, I’ll be the first to admit I didn’t eat organ meats as a kid.

I was the pickiest of picky eaters.

I didn’t eat my first taco until college. When I say that I had a PB&J sandwich for lunch daily between the ages of 5 and 15…I’m not joking. Growing up, we basically ate the same 4 or 5 home-cooked meals every week. Fridays were pizza night out and Sundays were Chinese food ordered in.

As a child of the 70s, I grew up eating fast food, frozen vegetables, and when microwaves started becoming vogue, microwave meals, particularly popcorn. My father owned a grocery store so we had access to lots of common foods and snacks, most of all, candy!

I understand picky eating and more importantly, I understand the human need for comfort food.

In fact, I’ve spent the last 20+ years as a professional chef focused on making comfort foods healthy without sacrificing taste. I’ve cooked for celebrities, musicians, and billionaires, but it was becoming a father that forced me to go deeper in my exploration of functional food.

At the age of two, my youngest daughter was afflicted with the life-threatening Shiga toxin. I had left town for work thinking she was on the road to recovering only to return to her looking like skin and bones. It was a truly frightening time where my wife and I struggled to get nutrients into her.

Fortunately, she survived and is a vibrant, healthy child but the experience left me wanting to create a functional food product that anyone could eat and benefit from without requiring them to adopt new habits or step outside of their comfort zone.

That’s what Pluck is all about. Nutrition in a pinch. No need to adopt new habits, simply use Pluck instead of salt and pepper and turn everything into a nutrient-rich, bio-available superfood.

Endothelial Health MasterClass With Dr. Troy Jackson, M.D. Part 127 Jun 202401:21:48

Endothelial health refers to the well-being of the endothelium, the thin layer of cells lining the interior surface of blood vessels. This layer plays a crucial role in vascular function, including regulating blood flow, preventing clotting, and maintaining the balance of substances between the bloodstream and surrounding tissues.

Maintaining endothelial health is vital for longevity as it ensures optimal blood circulation, reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, and supports overall vascular function. Healthy endothelium helps prevent atherosclerosis, hypertension, and other conditions that can lead to heart attacks, strokes, and other serious health issues. Through lifestyle choices like a balanced diet, regular exercise, and stress management, one can promote endothelial health and enhance longevity.

Dr. Troy Jackson loves his role as a family medicine physician to develop lasting relationships with his patients while encouraging and guiding them along their journey to a better self. He has a particular interest in genomics-based personalized medicine, but Dr. Jackson finds all aspects of primary care fascinating. After growing up in central Mississippi and attending The University of Mississippi for both his undergraduate and medical school educations, Dr. Jackson completed his family medicine residency at the MAHEC Family Medicine Residency Program here in Asheville, NC.

Title: Maximizing Nutrition with Smoothies: A Shortcut to Health and Wellness

In today's fast-paced world, ensuring we get all the essential nutrients our bodies need can be quite the challenge. With busy schedules and limited time for meal preparation, it's easy to fall short on key vitamins and minerals. However, one convenient and efficient way to bridge this gap is through the power of smoothies.

Smoothies offer a myriad of benefits for health-conscious individuals seeking to optimize their nutrition. Whether you're looking to boost your immune system, improve digestion, or increase energy levels, incorporating smoothies into your daily routine can be a game-changer. Here's why:

1. **Nutrient Density**: Smoothies allow you to pack a variety of nutrient-rich ingredients into one delicious concoction. By blending fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and other superfoods together, you can create a powerhouse of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytonutrients in just one serving.

2. **Quick and Convenient**: Busy mornings or hectic workdays don't have to mean sacrificing nutrition. With a blender and a handful of ingredients, you can whip up a nutrient-packed smoothie in minutes, making it an ideal option for those on the go.

3. **Digestive Health**: Blending ingredients breaks down the cell walls of fruits and vegetables, making their nutrients more easily digestible and absorbable by the body. This can aid in better digestion and nutrient absorption, promoting overall gut health.

4. **Customizable and Versatile**: The beauty of smoothies lies in their versatility. Whether you prefer sweet or savory, there's a smoothie recipe to suit every palate and dietary preference. You can customize your smoothie to target specific health goals or address nutrient deficiencies by including ingredients rich in the vitamins and minerals you need most.

5. **Hydration Boost**: Many fruits and vegetables have high water content, which can help keep you hydrated throughout the day. Adding ingredients like cucumber, celery, or coconut water to your smoothie can contribute to your daily fluid intake.

Now, let's address the intriguing insight shared by Dr. Rhonda Patrick regarding the interaction between polyphenols in bananas and the benefits of blueberries. Dr. Rhonda Patrick is a well-respected biomedical scientist known for her research in areas such as aging, cancer, and nutrition. She holds a Ph.D. in biomedical science and has conducted extensive research on the role of nutrition and lifestyle factors in health and longevity.

Dr. Patrick is also the host of the popular podcast "FoundMyFitness," where she delves into various topics related to health, wellness, and longevity. Through in-depth interviews with experts in the field, she provides valuable insights backed by scientific research to empower listeners to take control of their health.

In one of her discussions, Dr. Patrick highlighted a study suggesting that consuming bananas alongside blueberries may counteract some of the beneficial effects of blueberries due to the interaction between polyphenols present in both fruits. Polyphenols are plant compounds with antioxidant properties that have been linked to numerous health benefits, including reduced inflammation and improved heart health.

However, the findings of this study should be interpreted with caution, as research in nutrition is complex, and individual responses may vary. While it's essential to consider potential interactions between nutrients, it's also crucial to focus on overall dietary patterns and the synergistic effects of various foods.

Smoothies can be an excellent way to incorporate a diverse range of fruits, vegetables, and other nutritious ingredients into your diet, helping to ensure you receive a wide array of essential nutrients. By experimenting with different combinations and paying attention to your body's response, you can create delicious and nutrient-dense smoothies that support your health and well-being.

Harnessing the power of smoothies can be a simple yet effective strategy for maximizing your nutrition and filling any nutrient gaps in your diet. Whether you're looking to boost your immune system, increase energy levels, or simply nourish your body with wholesome ingredients, a daily smoothie can be a delicious and convenient way to support your overall health and wellness journey.

Body Composition: Impact on Healthspan and How to Improve It10 May 202400:44:30

In the pursuit of health and wellness, managing body composition is often overlooked or misunderstood. Yet, it's a crucial aspect that can significantly impact our overall well-being. One of the fundamental concepts in body composition management is understanding the difference between subcutaneous fat and non-subcutaneous fat, and the importance of maintaining adequate lean body mass through weight training and proper nutrition.

Subcutaneous Fat vs. Non-Subcutaneous Fat: What's the Difference?

Subcutaneous fat refers to the fat stored directly under the skin. It's the fat you can pinch and feel. While excess subcutaneous fat can affect your appearance and self-esteem, it's generally less harmful to health compared to non-subcutaneous fat.

Non-subcutaneous fat, on the other hand, includes visceral fat and fat stored around organs. This type of fat poses more significant health risks as it's associated with various metabolic disorders, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Unlike subcutaneous fat, visceral fat is not visible and requires more attention for effective management.

The Importance of Maintaining Lean Body Mass

Lean body mass encompasses everything in your body except for fat - muscles, bones, organs, and fluids. Preserving lean body mass is vital for several reasons:

  1. Metabolic Health: Lean muscle mass plays a crucial role in regulating metabolism. The more muscle you have, the more calories your body burns at rest, making weight management more manageable.
  2. Functional Strength: Building and maintaining muscle strength is essential for performing daily activities with ease and reducing the risk of injury, particularly as we age.
  3. Bone Health: Resistance training, which is often used to build lean muscle mass, also strengthens bones, reducing the risk of osteoporosis and fractures.

The Role of Weight Training and Protein Consumption

Weight training, or resistance training, is one of the most effective ways to increase lean body mass. By challenging your muscles with progressively heavier weights, you stimulate muscle growth and improve overall body composition.
