Vagus Nerve Effects on Epigenetics10 May 202300:57:24

Hello, everybody! Welcome back to the Health Upgrade Podcast.

In this episode, we will delve into the fascinating topic of the vagus nerve's involvement in the production of our genetic transcription and transcription factors, and how vagus nerve stimulation can affect epigenetics. Our DNA is composed of nucleotides, which contain codes that serve as instructions for protein synthesis. However, epigenetic factors such as behavior and environment can impact the expression of genes and proteins. Stress and inflammation caused by disorders can cause changes in DNA methylation, histone modification, and the presence of non-coding RNAs, resulting in negative effects on our health and longevity. Fortunately, by stimulating the vagus nerve, we can activate the parasympathetic nervous system and counteract the harmful effects of these epigenetic factors. This can lead to a reduction in aging, improved cognitive function, increased metabolic efficiency, and decreased inflammation. Vagus nerve stimulation also aids in developing emotional, mental, and physical resilience, enabling us to handle stressors and thrive in our current world.

Nutrition to Upgrade Vagus Nerve Function featuring Emma Ford26 Apr 202300:50:14

Hello, everybody! Welcome back to the Health Upgrade Podcast.

I am very excited about today’s show because we will have one of the members of our team, Emma Ford. She is a Certified Clinical & Holistic Nutritionist (CNP); founder of Gut Rooted—a virtual nutritional counseling practice focused on gut health, digestive disorders & preventative health. She specializes in gut health, digestive disorders & the gut-brain connection. Her goal is to empower individuals to restore their gut so they can reclaim their mind, body & state of well-being.

In today’s episode we will dig into the importance of a healthy gut and proper diet in supporting our overall health especially the vagus nerve function. Our digestive tract is so heavily rooted in vagus nerve innervation so when we smell food, when we tastefood, we have this initial reaction within our brain that signals the vagus nerve, that food is going down to the stomach then the stomach acid is produced. And if the vagus nerve is not functioning well because of stress, then we're not going to get those signals down to the digestive organs effectively causing small intestinal bacterial overgrowth or constipation and other digestive tract disorders. We will also be talking about the meals, supplements, and tools that our bodies require to assist and optimizing your diet and vagus nerve function.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation and Repair featuring Sterling Cooley19 Apr 202301:03:04

Welcome to another episode of the Health Upgrade Podcast.

In today’s episode, we had an awesome conversation with the well-known “Vagus Nerve” guy, Sterling Cooley. Sterling Cooley is the CEO & Founder at Vagus Nerve Stimulation & Repair Program. Where he currently works on activating the Parasympathetic Central Vagal Nervous system using direct to consumer Vagus Nerve stimulation technology. Sterling is also a consultant for leaders and managers of fast growing, and innovative companies across many industries. He has personally overseen clinical neuroscience studies in the treatment of many diverse disorders of the human brain.

In today’s episode, Sterling will share his story on how he and his team found that pulsed ultrasound when used in the vagus nerve is a powerful and transformative therapy for individuals all around the world. We will also discuss how sleep and dreams assess whether the vagus nerve stimulation is working. Sleep is very much a parasympathetic state and when you are stimulated it induces you in this state. So, the healthier your vagus nerve is, the more it will give you the benefit of deeper sleep and vivid dreams. Which enhances your ability to wake up with so much more alertness and so much more cognitive functioning optimized due to being in the parasympathetic state.

Deep Dive into Heart Rate Variability with Greg Elliott14 Apr 202301:03:17

Hello and welcome to the Health Upgrade Podcast!

I am honored to have this wonderful conversation with the master of HRV - heart rate variability, Greg Elliot. Greg is an exercise physiologist, kinesiologist and osteopathic practitioner who has worked with various hospitals, universities, clinics, fitness facilities and sports teams in Canada, the USA and around the world. He completed his Master of Science in Exercise Science at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania and is passionate about teaching and learning about latest improvements in the field of exercise science, active rehab and manual therapy.

In today’s episode we will have a very significant discussion on heart rate variability. The HRV is a measurement tool that we use to check how our vagus nerve and other autonomic nerves are functioning.  We will talk about the multiple ways of measuring heart rate variability and how we can contextualize and utilize the HRV data to positively impact our overall health specially for people that have various chronic conditions and chronic diseases. We will also touch into incorporating vagus nerve stimulation on heart rate variability. When the vagus nerve is stimulated there is an increase of parasympathetic, reducing inflammation through the cholinergic anti-inflammatory pathway which then increases the complexity of HRV.

Vagus Nerve Effects on Bone Health and Osteoporosis05 Apr 202300:45:34

Hi everyone! Welcome to another episode of the Health Upgrade Podcast.

Today, our focus will be centered on bone health, where we will delve deep into the intricate mechanisms of bone health and explore the challenges that lead to bone density loss or bone mineral loss. Our bones consist of three different types of cells - osteoblasts, osteoclasts, and osteocytes, which work in perfect harmony to maintain bone homeostasis. Moreover, the involvement of the nervous system and autonomic nervous system also plays a crucial role in bone health, regulating the structure and bone function.

Osteoporosis is one of the most prevalent conditions that arise when the overall health of our bones is less than optimal. This condition is characterized by a decrease in estrogen levels, leading to a higher risk of bone mineral loss. The presence of sympathetic activation on the autonomic nervous system and an increase in inflammation further exacerbate this condition, increasing the risk of cardiovascular issues, heart attacks, and atherosclerosis.

In this episode, we will also touch upon the significance of nutrient deficiencies such as calcium and magnesium in improving bone density. So, if you are interested in upgrading your overall bone health, join us now and listen to this exciting episode!

Vagus Nerve Involvement in Metabolic Conditions22 Mar 202300:20:58

Hi everyone! Welcome to another episode of the Health Upgrade Podcast.

Today, in our mini episode we are going to dig into the topic of metabolic disease and understanding of what adipose tissue is and how its dysregulation could lead to so many other problems. Metabolic disease has to do with two types of serious medical conditions which are type two diabetes and hypertension. These conditions arise in individuals with high body mass indices or BMIs, more specifically in those with a high percentages of body weight attributable to fat. Type two diabetes stresses the pancreas and forces insulin levels to rise as the body tries to push the high glucose into those cells, which then goes through the kidneys causing stress on that organ which will lead to hypertension.

We will also be discussing another important piece of this metabolic disease condition which is the autonomic nervous system and the SNS activation.  The sympathetic nervous system is responsible for the fight, flight and freeze responses of our autonomic nervous system. And when this is activated in a longer period it leads to chronic sympathetic activation then anxiety, hypertension, depression, autoimmune disorders, cancer and diabetes will occur.

Listen to this episode if you want to understand how you can take that next step to optimize and upgrade your health.

Vagus Nerve and Immune System Overview01 Mar 202300:20:23

Hello and welcome to the Health Upgrade Podcast!

Today, we'll have a brief episode providing an overview of the fundamentals of the autonomic nervous system, the vagus nerve, vagus nerve stimulation, and their effects on the immune system. The autonomic nervous system is a network of nerves that regulates bodily functions that we don't consciously control. It consists of two branches: the sympathetic and the parasympathetic. In this discussion, we'll focus on the parasympathetic branch.

When a person is free from stress and at rest, the parasympathetic branch
is activated, which also means that the vagus nerve shifts into the rest,
digest, relax, and restore mode. In this mode, immune cells and the nervous
system shift away from an inflammatory or stress state and perform their
critical duties of keeping us healthy.

We will also tackle on how to upregulate and enhance your parasympathetic activity.

If you want to learn more about the vagus nerve and how it affects your health, let’s jump into the episode!

Mitochondria And Vagus Nerve Interaction04 Jan 202300:55:46

Hi everyone! Welcome to another episode of the Health Upgrade Podcast.

Today, we'll be discussing a few essential cellular processes that are necessary to ensure optimal body and cellular function. The first one is mitochondria. Every cell in our body, except for red blood cells, contains mitochondria, which produce the energy needed for the cell to perform its functions. Dysfunctional mitochondria can lead to chronic disease.

The second process we'll be discussing is the effect of the vagus nerve and vagus nerve stimulation on mitochondria. Vagus nerve stimulation helps reduce inflammation and manage reactive oxygen species within and around cells, preventing an inflammatory cascade from becoming a chronic, disease-based pathway.

We'll also delve into the roles of serotonin and melatonin, which are important neurotransmitters. Serotonin is involved in mood regulation and happiness, and breaks down melatonin. Melatonin, in turn, plays a significant role in sleep, recovery, and antioxidant processes. A lack of melatonin leads to a slow increase in oxidative stress and damage inside the mitochondria, causing the cell to become inflammatory.

Psychedelics And The Autonomic Nervous System - LSD and DMT30 Nov 202200:52:25

Hi everyone! Welcome to another episode of the Health Upgrade Podcast.

In today’s episode, we will continue talking about the effects of psychedelics mainly LSD and DMT on the body and on the autonomic nervous system. LSD is probably one of the hallucinogenic drugs that has some potential to be addictive and the autonomic nervous system is affected by LSD which can cause pupil dilation, increased blood pressure even body temperature changes. It also increases circulating cortisol levels and other things in the bloodstream like prolactin and oxytocin and epinephrine that are modulatory of the immune system. While DMT is an active compound, it's an analog of Tryptamine. This medication has the ability to increase your hearts variability, which suggests an increase in parasympathetic activation, which is the vagal tone. It also helps reduce inflammatory cytokines.

We will also discuss the history of LSD and DMT along with the potential positive benefit these drugs can give in your overall health when taken minimally.

Disclaimer: we are not advocating the use of medication, but advocating the scientific study of these medications in helping those that are suffering. Because in a therapeutic sense, many of these medications can be utilized in a really, really positive way. So the more research the better, we can understand how they function and why they can have such a positive therapeutic benefit.

Psychedelics And The Autonomic Nervous System Mescaline And Psilocybin23 Nov 202200:59:39

Hello everybody. Welcome back to the Health Upgrade Podcast!

For today’s episode we are going to shift gears from recreational drugs that have been used in addictive ways, to different types of drugs that are called psychedelics, hallucinogens and dissociative medications. These drugs are mind altering. They literally change your brain. They don't share generally the same addiction as recreational drugs. But that doesn't mean that they're not dangerous, and that they don't have significant social and personal risks associated with them.

We're going to focus our attention primarily on two psychedelic medications which are mescaline and psilocybin. They effect within the brain and the autonomic nervous system, whether it's creating a pro-inflammatory or an anti-inflammatory effect.

Hello everybody and welcome on the Health Upgrade Podcast

In today’s episode, we have the pleasure of talking with Dr. Marie-Eve Tremblay from University of Victoria. She is Associate Professor, Canada Research Chair (Tier II) of Neurobiology of Aging and Cognition

Dr. Tremblay’s research focuses on aging and cognition, using both animal and human brain models to explore the significance of microglial remodeling of neuronal circuits and elimination of synapses in the pathogenesis of brain disorders.

In this interview we focus on microglial cell function, and we dig into her amazing research and findings in neurodevelopment, to understand how the microglia plays such an important role in the development and the function of our brains, spinal cord and all the central nervous system. Microglia are really important for maintaining the quality of our brain environment and the formation of the different cells. They perform this quality check so whenever something goes wrong, they have to intervene at the earliest signs of homeostatic disturbance.

We will also talk about some of the neurodegenerative conditions & diseases, how they function and how microglial cells play a role there.

Listen to episode to learn more about Dr. Murray and her wonderful and exciting research on neurodevelopment!

The Neuroscience Of Drug Addiction - Part 209 Nov 202200:43:27

Welcome to another episode of the Health Upgrade Podcast.

Today's episode is a continuation of our last discussion where we were breaking down addictive drugs and types of medications. But we're now going to step into the effects of these medicines on our body, our brain and how to overcome these challenges when we become addicted to it. What happens in opioid abuse, cocaine abuse, and methamphetamine abuse is that we end up seeing a change in how neuropathology works. Where we will have an inability to control emotions, have erratic behavior and violent outburst. These things are all a function of the neuropathology that goes along disrupted neurotransmitter expression and disrupted cytokine expression which is a side effect of using these drugs. Alongside this is the destruction of the brain hypertrophy, basically a breakdown or atrophy of areas of the brain that are critical for normal function which can lead to cytotoxicity.

We will also be diving into the drug withdrawal symptoms that we will experience if we quit or reduce these addictive substances. These symptoms may depend on how long our exposure to these substances and the kind of drugs we have used. We have to remember the longer we use it, the more damage it may cause. Tap into the episode to learn more!

The Neuroscience Of Drug Addiction - Part 102 Nov 202201:10:26

Hello, everybody and welcome back to the Health Upgrade Podcast!

Today, we will be talking about drug addiction and how the autonomic nervous system is affected by the use of opioid medication and drugs. These drugs are mainly heroin, fentanyl, cocaine, and methamphetamines. Becoming addicted to these medications will lead to lots of health problems, ranging from cognitive issues to digestive and degenerative issues. The addiction to these drugs is actually driven by hacking the neurotransmitter system where the chronic relapsing happens - this is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use. So, we want to be careful about the use of these medications and it's really important to be aware that if you've been prescribed one of these medications for pain, you have to wean yourself off to avoid being addicted to it.

We will also have quick review of neurons and the functions of the innate nervous system and innate immune system cells that are around there which help the brain function.

Vagus Nerve Involvement In Angiogenesis26 Oct 202201:12:33

Hello everybody and welcome to the Heath Upgrade Podcast

In today’s episode, we have a very interesting topic which is the complex tie between macrophages and angiogenesis, in both health and in disease, as well as the development and production of the network of blood vessel in angiogenesis. Angiogenesis is the process by which we produce new blood vessels and macrophages plays an important role in the production and maintenance of these blood vessels which is why they are a pair. Without macrophages, our blood vessel will not form in the correct pattern, and those connections of the vasculature structure will not be created correctly. We can say that macrophages are the core of the creation of the blood vessel.

We’ll also touch on the peripheral vascular disease, chronic inflammation, iron homeostasis and the process of angiogenesis and macrophages which is linked with that.

Vagus Nerve Involvement In Hormones And Reproduction19 Oct 202201:06:43

In today's episode, we are excited to discuss a new topic that will lead us into understanding reproduction and the importance of macrophages. Macrophages is very vital and essential in the production of our hormone, and producing reproductive organs, both male and female. These cells chaperone the production of reproductive organs and reproductive cells through development, and through life in general.

We will also be digging deep into the autonomic nervous system and the entire process of reproduction overall. The autonomic nervous system is critically involved in the process of fertility, high level of stress, high level of inflammation, and a high level of obesity can affect ASN which can throw the system off. This may lead to fertility problems. Overall, the balance of hormones plays an important role in the entire reproduction and the fertility challenges that may occur.
