This week I'm excited to welcome Dr Valdeane Browne. Dr. Brown had a long and varied history in the field of mental health before even pursuing his Ph.D. in Psychology. For over 25 years he taught Continuing Medical Education courses across a wide range of clinical topics including Rapid Transformation of Borderline Phenomenology, Dual Diagnosed Clients, Dynamics of Family Therapy, Working With Angry Adolescents. For many years he was a featured and keynote speaker at numerous national and international conferences in the fields of neurofeedback, child psychology, Total Quality Management, and others. He developed and published the Five Phase Model of Neurofeedback which was the first and still the only, approach to clinical neurofeedback that integrated multiple protocols into a single comprehensive approach that could be used regardless of clinical presentation. With his background in mathematics, physics, computer programming, designing and implementing automated outcome studies as well as multimodal assessment, he was able to co-develop, with his wife Dr. Sue Brown, the Period Three Approach to neurofeedback. I'm very, very intrigued and keen to dive into some of the questions, but before we do that, I just wondered if you could tell our audience who may not be familiar with you, a little bit about who you are and what you do? Dr. Valdeane 01:50 Yes. I'm licensed as a psychologist on inactive status in the US, and my wife is too, Dr. Sue Brown. She and I are the co developers of NeurOptimal brain training system, and we're the co founders of Zengar Institute Incorporated. It's the easiest to use, safest, and overall most interesting brain training system. Let's put it that way. Certainly the most advanced, in my opinion, and it really is about giving brain directly information about what it just did, so the brain itself sorts out what is best for it at that moment. It's not driving it any place in particular. 02:41 About 20 years ago, Sue and I decided that we really needed to create our own neuro feedback program. I was teaching at that time, neuro feedback, across a wide range of systems. Various conferences and things of that nature, and I just had had a very different vision for what neuro feedback could be. I actually had that vision all the way back in 1970, and that's kind of been my life's work. Stu 01:24 Very well thank you, very well. We haven't had a good chat in a long time, so really, really keen to dig in to a little bit more about what you do and how you help people. And specifically in health and fitness and mindset and motivation today. But before I delve into all of the questions that I've got in my mind right now, I'd just love it if you could tell our listeners a little bit about who you are. Justine 01:50 Sure. I mean I guess I'll just start with my fitness journey. I started about 15 years ago. I used to be a dental nurse and I didn't like the nine to five grind, didn't really enjoy the job and decided to find my passion which was in the fitness industry, so I began in a gym selling memberships, so I really didn't have any sort of direction as to where I wanted to go with it, but I just knew I wanted to be working in a gym. So I literally started at the bottom. And then from there I became a personal trainer, a group fitness instructor. I got into all the Les Mills classes and teaching Body Attack and RPM and then I did my first sort of fitness modeling show back in 2007 I think, like forever ago. And did that for a couple of years which sort of grew my name in a different sort of field in the industry and got me in with Oxygen Magazine. And yeah, so it sort of just snowballed from there and I loved what I did and I always sort of went out to do things I guess, and do things well. 02:49 I'm a bit of a perfectionist for myself, I like to set goals and achieve them and I felt like I really found my purpose. So I guess, throughout the years it sort of evolved onto the online sort of scene, so now I'm an online coach, I don't do any personal training in the gym as such anymore because I had a little boy five years ago, so once I got pregnant I was like, well I need to come up with a way to be able to stay at home with him and then still create an income. So I created Fit Healthy Mums and then my Mind Body Overhaul program, which is sort of the crux of what I do now. And my passion now really is, sort of throughout the years I guess I've learned a lot the hard way, I've done everything wrong, learned from my mistakes and now I'm really passionate about sort of steering women in the right direction, focusing on mindset, healthy relationships with food, with themselves, training, putting it all under the same umbrella, not focusing so much on aesthetics, but more so what's going on for women internally. 03:45 And the more I've worked with these women essentially over the last five years, the more I've realized how important it is that this sort of work is done for women because I think there's so much emphasis on the exterior, on the training and these days women just live such high-stressed lives, they're doing the work to sort of get ahead. So that's just become my absolute passion and emotional and mental transformations are just as exciting to me as physical ones. Yeah. And then I quit drinking in 2010 just for lifestyle reasons, and my life’s been pretty fantastic since then. And I now help entrepreneurs, health conscious people either quit drinking for 30 days or 90 days, or just quit drinking forever. And then I also became somewhat of a sleep expert in that I help people sleep better. It's so great to be here with you. Sorry for the mood lighting I've got happening on my side. I've retreated to my parents. There's construction everywhere around our place at the moment. So, I figured quiet and moody was better than noisy and bright, right? Stu 01:38 It looks super comfortable behind you. 01:40 It is. Yeah. 01:42 Excellent. So before we get into the questions today, for any of our listeners that might not be familiar with your work, could you just tell us a little bit about yourself please? Alexx 01:51 Yeah, for sure. So I'm an author of a book that came out last year, The Tox Life. But the story goes way, way, way back into the past. And the whole reason I ended up in health education, even though I had a successful career in hospitality and prior to that in cosmetics in the beauty industry, was through a series of events that I like to call waves of realization, if you like. The first one being a retrospective realization that when I left cosmetics I also left the world of migraines and I was like, "Oh." I didn't really know to dig as to what was in the industry that might be causing those migraines. But I literally stopped getting migraines once I left the beauty industry. So I knew there was something there. 02:40 Then I had this recurrent tonsillitis situation, and so many people will hear this and go, "Yeah, I've been on that merry-go-round" where you go to the doctor because you feel unwell, get the drugs, you take the drugs, you feel better, you feel better for a couple of months, then you feel crap. Then you go to the doctor, then you get drugs and with antibiotics, as some people may or may not know, antibiotic resistance starts to creep in. So you get put on stronger and stronger and stronger ones and of course you're killing more and more and more good gut bugs at the same time. 03:11 And I found myself in a situation where antibiotics didn't work and this was really my wake up call to stop doing the same thing over and over again and expect a different result. It just wasn't making me better. And I was a thriving 28-year-old in every other area of my life. And I was like, "I can't go on like this. This is ridiculous." And so a friend said, 'I know it might be a bit crazy, but why don't you go see a naturopath?" Which, 15 years ago was a bit of a cuckoo thing to do. even though now, thank gosh, there's one on every street corner helping us build stronger bodies. But back then it was a bit weird and I went and she put me on some revolting tasting herbs that have since come to love the taste of, and a really simple and strict three day, if you have to eat something, just have some really well cooked brown rice, chicken stock and carrots and that's it. I just don't want you doing anything too complicated for your system. 04:05 And I got better in three days. I sweated it all out and it was really quite astounding to me that some herbs from plants could actually ship tonsillitis. She suggested I quit gluten containing foods as a longer term strategy to stop it from reoccurring because she had read in the research that was starting to come out that there was a strong link between [inaudible 00:04:32] bugs and a gluten, in terms of gluten feeding them and then causing proliferation, et cetera. 04:42 So I was desperate. I gave it a go even though as a half Frenchie that was probably the worst news I could have ever received. [foreign language 00:04:49] all the good things. But it worked. And the really interesting thing in that time was it got me looking at food labels for the first time in my life. I actually had to look at the ingredients because a few months off gluten and then you'd accidentally have it in a restaurant or something. I really noticed a huge issue with it, but it's kind of like the cows getting grain fed from the late '60s and onward and then realizing you got to give them a tiny bit and then a tiny bit more and then a tiny ... You never realize you're not meant to feel average. 05:28 And so I had started to feel great and then boom. And so I really knew these things were hurting me and I had gluten in every meal. They would have been in my pre 28-year-old self. every single meal, there would have been some form of gluten. And so it was really interesting to see how it was in products that were causing, as they were called health products, breakfast shakes and those sorts of high protein this and low fat that. 05:54 It really started me questioning food companies and questioning our whole system that allows us to trust that they're doing the right thing by us. And they're really, really not, and our government just lets it happen and this is happening all over the world. So, I had been a bit of an activist in my teen years, joined Greenpeace first day of uni. I was that chick. I kind of put it all to bed, you get the good career, the boyfriend, you start on your little societal checklist. I was raised quite conservatively. 06:58 And I was horrified to learn that about 90% of what was in there was petroleum derived. That really then sent me on the journey of learning what these chemicals were, I discovered endocrine disrupting chemical families. I discovered the word fragrance and how that can have up to 140 different chemical compounds inside it's secret little word recipe thing there. And again, my sense of justice around the secrecy and the lack of longterm research done before things are brought out to market. 07:32 Really just, for me, those two things happening in a bit of a wave and a few little things in between made me think I need to focus my skills on education, empowerment, and motivation and nerdiness. Martin 01:45 Absolutely, yeah. So to cut a long story short, I started lifting weights at a young age and I've always been competitive, and into sports and stuff from a young age. So I've always been, as I said, very competitive and very active as a child. I started lifting weights at the age of 14 and I've never looked back. And when it comes to me stepping foot into the fitness industry, I was actually, I qualified as a personal trainer by the age of 19, I'm now 31. And I still do personal training now, so I've been doing that for ... I'm not very good at Maths, but 12 years or something. 02:25 So about four or five years ago, I decided to compete for the first time as well. So I've climbed to the Pro level as a fitness model athlete. I've competed I think about eight times. I've taken my body to the extremes in that sense. And nowadays over the last, say three years, I have managed to ... After, as you can imagine, been driven by aesthetics. That's probably the main reason why young lads in their teens start lifting weights anyway. It's probably insecurities or whatever. So obviously always being driven by aesthetics, I then managed to switch my mindset, which was the game changer for me into making health a priority, that was about maybe three years ago. And ever since then, I have managed to maintain my physique and I'm focused on my health and feeling good above anything. JJ 01:48 I am a nutrition and fitness expert, and I'm obsessed with weight loss, and I feel vindicated, actually, these last couple weeks because I have been literally [00:02:00] into health since the age of 12, and in my 20s, when I started out as a personal trainer, I was one of the first three in the country in the United States: me, and Body by Jake, and Mark Sisson. It was so obvious so quickly that what we were being taught in graduate school, which is calories in, calories out, was a complete ruse. I was like, "All right, I'm gonna figure this out," and I went in and I did 40 graduate and doctoral courses. 02:25 I started going through everything I could find, and what I came to the conclusion [00:02:30] of is that all calories weren't created equal, that our body's not a bank account, it's a chemistry lab, and you have to think of the hormonal effects of food. It was like I said, "Santa Claus, the tooth fairy, and the Easter bunny are all frauds," so it was like I was attacking peoples religions. I was like, "Oh, my gosh," and what I'm super excited about now is I've been, for the last couple decades, looking at everything that could get in the way of you using weight or cause you to gain weight which is how food intolerance and all that came [00:03:00] to be. Michael 01:42 Sure. Sure. So, essentially, right now I have an alternate medicine practice in Northern California, where I primarily focus on gut health. The interesting thing, though, is that, because the gut connects to so many systems, it kinda congenitally ties me to things like thyroid and autoimmunity, in general, immune health, in addition to just the gut. 02:06 After I was in practice for a while, I started noticing that some of the dictums of progressive, alternative and functional medicine were maybe a bit off, maybe a bit well-intentioned, but probably a bit wasteful and in need of some scientific verification. And so that led to the aspect of getting involved in some of the clinical research that we're doing at my office, trying to answer questions of what really works in this progressive, alternative, integrative model. What, maybe, was good idea, but doesn't really pan out. 02:40 And so, in the clinic, also performing clinical research, and I recently authored a book all about gut health. I also have a website and a podcast and write some articles. So, kind of involved in this, I guess, from multiple aspects. First off for our audience that might not be familiar with your work, I would love it if you could just tell our listeners a little bit about what you do and perhaps why you do it as well. Peter 02:07 Yeah, so I started out about 18 years ago clinical practice. I left the VA Hospital here in Houston, Texas after a very disgruntled stint in the rheumatology department, and I was very disgruntled with the way that people were being treated. They were being treated with high levels of immune suppressants and steroid medications and surgical joint procedure replacements. And to me it was not a solution, it wasn’t an answer, nobody got better. It just seemed like a system. And I’m a veteran myself. So having these veterans come through the hospital and not being treated properly, it really didn’t sit well with me. So when I started my own private practice, one of the things that I made it a point of was to implement diet, lifestyle and nutrition into people with chronic autoimmune problems, because that’s where I was. 02:57 At VA Hospital, rheumatology, it’s rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Scleroderma, dermatomyositis. Diseases like psoriatic arthritis and spondyloarthritis. So joint pains, muscle pains, chronic autoimmune in nature. And there just wasn’t a real viable medical option outside of immune suppression, which to me was not a solution. First up, for everybody that may not be familiar with you and your work, I'd love it if you could just tell our listeners a little bit about who you are, what you do and perhaps why you do it as well. Ariel 02:03 Sure. My name is Ariel and I'm the founder of a company called Muse. We make a device that is a brain sensing headband that helps you meditate, gives you real-time feedback on your meditation so that you can know when you're in the zone and when your mind is wandering. Yes. Stu 02:21 I was just literally going to jump in there with the meditation aspect as well. Ariel 02:29 Jump. 02:30 Jump straight in. I was just telling you before that I really struggle with meditation, and after running a podcast for almost five years the take home for me from a lot of the world experts are that meditation is so critically, or it is so critical for overall health in terms of switching off all of the noise. Stu 02:52 I liken my own personal journey with meditation as to perhaps standing outside a shop and sells televisions, and in the window of the shop there are 100 different screens. Each screen is showing something quite different. That's how my mind is. I'm thinking about this while looking at that, and there's something else happening up here. I've through Headspace, a billion different meditation apps, tried transcendental, tried many different practices and I really struggle with it. 03:21 Very, very interested in Muse and you sharing what Muse is in terms of a tech perspective with our audience, because I'm thinking that it might open up a whole different way of approaching meditation. Ariel 03:34 What you described is essentially why we built Muse. Everybody knows meditation is fantastic for you, but frankly it's very hard to do. You can sit there even if you're guided by an app and your mind is still wandering all over the place. For some people that can be really scary. You're sitting there. Your mind is supposed to be blank, you imagine, even though that's not what meditation is, and it's bouncing all over the place. You say, "Oh, jeez. I'm not good at this. This is not for me." You end up feeling worse about yourself and not meditating. 04:02 We wanted to build a tool that literally would hold your hand while you meditate and let you hear in real time what was going on inside your mind and guide you and show you what it is that you're supposed to be doing, and reinforce you when you do it right. Stu: 04:16 Sounds like a very useful piece of kit. How does the process work? 04:23 You slip on this little device. This is your Muse. It slips on just like a pair of glasses like this, and it tracks your meditation in real time. There are sensors, two sensors on the forehead and two behind the ears. These are actually clinical-grade EEG sensors. They're actually tracking your brain's brainwave activity in real time. It then sends that data to your smart phone or tablet, which interprets the data and lets you hear the sound of your own brain. 04:52 The metaphor we use is your mind is like the weather. When you're thinking, distracted, it's bouncing all over the place, you hear it is stormy. As you bring yourself to quiet, focused attention it actually quiets the storm. Most people think that meditation is just the idea of letting your mind go blank. It's not. Meditation is actually mental training, and the most basic form of meditation is focused attention meditation. In that you are focusing your attention on your breath or on a neutral object. 05:20 How you do it is you focus your attention on your breath. Your mind wanders. You notice it wanders and then you bring it back to your breath. In doing so you're able to train and maintain your attention. Now, what happens for most of us is our mind wanders, it continues to wander, and then we catch, and, "Oh, right. We're supposed to bring it back." 05:39 This act of noticing it's wandered and bringing it back is like doing your bench press rep at the gym. That's the rep of meditation, noticing it, bringing it back. In a regular meditation you might be wandering one, three, five minutes before you notice and bring it back. With Muse, it cues you instantly. You instantly bring it back, so you can literally get in many times more reps at the gym. You really are honed in that practice of noticing and returning. I so often see people struggling and suffering and saddling basically for not really living the life that they want to because they're exhausted, their brain fogged, they'd just feel out of balance and out of sorts. I also am so passionate about changing the way the system works because I think a lot of it is because we're brainwashed from the time we're little that you have an ache or pain, you go to the doctor, you get a pill, and it takes care of it. As you age, you get frail and slow down and all that kind of stuff, and we expect that so we get it. 02:51 I think that our system needs to change. Dawson 01:54 Sure. Well, I've been intrigued by energy healing for many, many years. When I was a teenager after high school, I went and lived in a spiritual community where I learned energy healing and learned meditation, so these things are part of my awareness for a long, long time, but what I found really exciting starting in the 1980s where meditation was first being studied was the accumulation or empirical evidence that things like practices, like compassion, like mindfulness, like meditation, like acupuncture, acupressure, all of these seemingly esoteric energetic practices have direct effects and initially the research was on the psyche, so is on anxiety and depression, pain, but now, we have the tools like MRIs, and EEGs to actually drill down and see if they're affecting us physiologically, dramatically. For the last many, 20, 25 years, I've been collecting evidence, I've been writing books, I've been running clinical trials, I've been doing social projects all to try, and raise the profile of energy medicine in primary care. I wanted in veterans administration hospitals, I wanted in primary care clinics, I wanted in psychotherapy offices. As we get to realize and understand just how profoundly this affects our wellness, I believe it has a place at the frontline of medical care so that's really what my passion is now and that's why I've written ... This week we welcome back Alyssa Azar to the show. Alyssa began trekking in 2005 with her first challenge, crossing the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea. Alyssa then trekked in Nepal, completed treks such as Everest Base Camp and Kokoda numerous times, Mt Kosciuszko in Australia, the Aussie 10 (the 10 highest peaks in Australia), Mt Kilimanjaro. After completing Mt Kilimanjaro in 2011, Alyssa began climbing by doing a mountaineering course in NZ. Since then she has climbed in South America and Nepal on various expeditions to different peaks including: Ama Dablam, Aconcagua, Manaslu and two Everest Expeditions. Alyssa was on Everest both in 2014 and 2015 when the Avalanche and the Nepal Earthquake occurred and closed the mountain. In 2016 Alyssa returned for a third time and on the 21st May 2016 became the Youngest Australian to Summit Mount Everest. She is also now leading climbs on many of the Seven Summits in 2018 and 2019. Alyssa 01:41 Yeah, so my name's Alyssa Azar. I'm 21 from Brisbane, but essentially I'm a mountaineer. And so just recently summited Everest for the second time. So originally climbed it from the south side and just recently got back from climbing it from the north side in Tibet. But really, how I got started into that was quite young. 02:02 I got into trekking, and that kind of happened just being exposed to it through my dad. So pretty much since I was four or five years old, he was guiding people across the Kokoda track. That's what he does for a living. And so I was kind of exposed to this world of adventure a little bit. But was always interested in the mountains and so I think I was always gonna sort of end up there at some point. But yeah, most of my weekends were out bush walking and I just loved it. And yeah, kind of harassed my dad to take me to Kokoda. I was obsessed with it. And yeah, he did. So I was eight years old when I first crossed the Kokoda track. And then from there, every few years we'd try and do another trip somewhere. And it was then, Everest base camp, Kilimanjaro, and it was often Kilimanjaro that I realized Everest had always been this thing in the back of my mind. And I'm gonna go for it and set the goal and then I knew, it's gonna be a few years away, but yeah started preparing for it and that's essentially been my life I guess. For the last few years now. Been on covers of multiple magazines, T.V., everything like that, so in all harnessing the power of the Ketogenic diet, fasting, and really understanding inflammation. And working closely with a lot of physicians over my career, cause I was in the health care industry. I owned an ancillary lab services company. So that was really my claim to fame. This was a personal topic for me as well because my parents had suffered, are suffering the very things that we get deep down and discover today as well with Max. How are you? Stu Yeah, very well. Thank you. We're super excited again today to have you on the show because you're a true pioneer in your specified topic, which for me, is neurodegenerative disease, Alzheimer's, optimizing the brain specifically as part of the pillars of health. It's a topic personally as well that is really close to home because we've got family issues as well in that area, which I'll talk to you a little bit later on the show. But first up, before we really get into the good stuff, I just wondered if you could tell our audience who might not have been exposed to your work, a little bit about yourself please. Max Absolutely. Again, my name is Max Lugavere. I'm 35 years old. I split my time between New York City and Los Angeles. My background is in media. I'm not a medical doctor. I was a health and science journalist for many years. That sort of began with a five-year tenure working for a TV network in the United States, that was founded by former US Vice President, Al Gore. I worked with him and his team for five years, cutting my teeth with the best of the best in Hollywood, learning how to tell a story, learning how to communicate fairly hot button topics with responsibility and grace. I left current TV to try to figure out where I was going to go with my career. I was in my mid-20s and it was around that time that my, back home in New York City, that my mother started to display strange symptoms of what would ultimately be determined to be a neurodegenerative disease. Basically, for me, I'm my mother's oldest son. My family's very tight-knit. I became, basically, obsessed with learning everything I could about what was robbing my Mom of her brain function such a young age. She was 58 when she first began showing symptoms. In tandem with that, with trying to do everything I could for my mother, my mission became bifurcated, essentially, because on the one hand, I was trying to learn why this happened to her, but on the other hand, it became very much about myself and how I can protect myself from ever having to experience cognitive decline and also to protect those that I care about, which is in a way, a sort of selfish thing. The people that I love, I want them to continue to be around me, in good health. I started learning about all of the mechanisms and associations that play when it comes to preserving and ultimately enhancing the way that our brains work. I just decided at a certain point that I couldn't stay quiet. | |||
