In this episode, we chat with Patty Picinich, a fierce advocate for Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (FDN). She opens up about her personal health struggles—think gut issues, mold toxicity, the works—and how they pushed her to dive deep into functional diagnostics. Patty talks about how FDN completely turned things around for her health, and now she's paying it forward, helping busy women (you know the type!) take control of their wellness too. We also get into the magic of holistic approaches, the power of diet, and why trusting your gut (literally and figuratively) is key when traditional medicine falls short. The Fine Line Between Orthorexia And Eating Clean w/ Carly Faye Loewenthal, FDNP14 Dec 202300:53:17
Orthorexia is defined as "an obsession with eating foods that one considers healthy". At first glance, this definition could trigger a variety of emotions for those of us in the functional healthcare space. That is, if you've dealt with chronic health issues yourself and listen to a podcast like this one, I'm sure at SOME POINT you'd say you had an obsession with eating healthy foods (and maybe you still do).    The question is, where does the line get drawn between an obsession that could be considered a passion versus an obsession that could be considered a clinically diagnosable issue? Our guest today, Carly Loewenthal, has all the answers!

Carly Faye Loewenthal is a master-level NLP certified Life Coach, and a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner. Carly runs a brain-based, trauma-informed business where she takes her clients on a transformational journey to reclaim the personal power hidden in their layers of symptoms to unlock a future of endless possibilities as they level up on the other side. Carly specializes in supporting women who struggle with disordered eating and uses a variety of support tools like functional lab testing, subconscious reprogramming, and personalized coaching. She is also certified as a master in NLP, Quantum Time Techniques & hypnosis, and holds a Master of Science in Education with 12+ years of experience as an educator.

When Genes Really ARE The Problem (FAP) w/ Michael Caprio11 Dec 202300:55:17

One of our favorite parts of bringing The Health Detective Podcast to our listeners and viewers is that we get to highlight guests who deal with conditions that many of us would otherwise never hear about. Today's guest on the show, Michael Caprio, deals with a genetic condition that you very likely haven't heard of.

At just eighteen years old, author Michael Caprio was diagnosed with Familial Adenomatous Polyposis, a rare genetic form of colorectal cancer that accounts for only 0.5 percent of all colorectal cancer cases in the United States. After enduring two life-saving operations, Michael has since made a full recovery and has become an author, advocate, leader, change-maker, and podcast guest in the spaces of mental health and colorectal cancer.

Although this story is bit different than the ones we would typically bring on the show, we think it is important to not only give a spotlight for those dealing with conditions such as FAP in silence, but for the listeners and viewers to find inspiration in the incredible resiliency and determination that people like Michael display.

We hope you enjoy this episode, and if you have an questions, you can always reach out to us directly @fdntraining on Instagram.

Why You Should Source Your Meat In America w/ Nigel O’Quinn, FDNP04 Dec 202300:55:54

There are MANY amazing brands out there nowadays that bring us supplements/products with one of nature's superfoods - organ meats. However, for our USA-based listeners (and, frankly, for MOST of our listeners), these organ meats are NOT coming from the country where the products are sold. This is not inherently bad per se, but wouldn't it be even better if we could source these superfoods right from our own backyard?

Today's guest on the Health Detective Podcast, Nigel O'Quinn, is a certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner and founder of Higher Healths. Through Higher Healths, he is solving this sourcing problem for Americans and Canadians as we speak.

His company is currently the ONLY ONE OUT THERE which specifically sources organ meats based on the country that the consumer lives in, and he is currently serving both American and Canadian consumers.

In addition to hearing about his company, on this episode, you'll hear about Nigel's personal health story, learn about the benefits of eating "nose to tail", and discover easy ways to make connections with local farmers to get the best food possible for you and your family.

As always, if you have any questions, please reach out to us @fdntraining.com

About Nigel:

Nigel O’Quinn is a lifetime health and fitness enthusiast, wanting to understand what makes a human operate and thrive is what started his nutrition journey, albeit in the worst direction at first within the College education programs. This led to his deterioration of good health which forced him to look outside of the food pyramid for a proper nutrition education. Nigel is now focused on connecting people to real food by getting nutrient dense organ meats back into the diet that had been left out. Higher Healths now operates in both the USA and in Canada working with regenerative farmers that have grass fed and grass finished programs for optimal care of land, animal, and health.

Why Four Registered Nurses Choose To Become FDNs w/ Sabrina Bailey, Kristy Roderick, Tina Weiss, and Emily Horton20 Nov 202301:00:01

One of the top questions we are frequently asked here at Functional Diagnostic Nutrition on a near-daily basis is, 'What types of people/professionals go through your course?' The reality is, ANYONE can go through the FDN program as long as they have the desire to learn and study, as well as the willingness to help others and walk the walk. As expected, we have all types of people with every educational background imaginable going through our program.

Historically, the FDN certification has attracted many health coaches, nutrition experts, and fitness enthusiasts. Over the last several years, though, we've seen a new wave of 'western' medicine practitioners pursuing our course. This isn't because one philosophy is bad and the other is good. What we've heard firsthand from these individuals is that they are pursuing more functional philosophies due to the increasing number of chronically ill patients who simply aren't being fully helped by western medicine alone.

With all that said, we wanted to share this exciting interview with FOUR nurses (all friends) who decided to pursue the FDN program together to start a brand new business where they serve their clients using functional medicine principles. Through this interview, we hope to help in two ways:

  1. Assist other western medicine practitioners in making an informed decision as to whether our program could benefit THEM.

  2. Help the standard practitioner better understand the unique problems that our western medicine friends face daily.

We hope you enjoy what will likely be our biggest interview ever (big because we have FIVE total people on this one)! As always, if you have any questions, shoot us a message @fdntraining on Instagram.

Got Mold? w/ Jason Earle16 Nov 202300:57:38

On this episode of The Health Detective Podcast, Detective Ev, FDNP is having a very timely conversation with Jason Earle, founder of "Got Mold".

When Jason realized that a moldy childhood home was the cause of his extreme allergies and asthma, he decided to give up his successful career on Wall Street to pursue the "healthy home" business to make sure the things that occurred to him and his family did not happen to others.

Over the last two decades, Jason has personally performed countless sick building investigations, solving many medical mysteries along the way, helping thousands of families recover their health and peace of mind. He has featured or appeared on Good Morning America, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Entrepreneur, Wired, and more.

We would NOT consider this your average mold podcast. In fact, our live audience and team found it so insightful, that we are bringing Jason back on soon for a second round.

For this first round, though, we'll be discussing the many health complications seen from mold exposure, why some of the most standard forms of home testing are NOT enough, and what action steps you can take TODAY to start making things better if you suspect you have mold.

Gut Check: The Real Impact of Alcohol w/ Samantha Lander, FDNP09 Nov 202300:49:43
Our guest today on The Health Detective Podcast, Samantha Lander (Sam), was actually one of the first guests we ever had on the show! But, let's be honest... Who remembers all the way back to episode 19?   With that said, we felt it was only right to get her back in the spotlight. From addiction, to serving prison time, to completely transforming her life and dedicating it to serving others through functional medicine, Sam has one of the most powerful journeys we've ever shared on this show.   In the beginning part of the episode, we review Sam's story. About halfway through, Detective Ev and her touch on the impacts of alcohol on the body (kinda), but end up getting into a LOT more than that. So much so that Sam is already scheduled again for us to do a part 2 with!   We hope you enjoy this episode, and as always, if you have questions, please reach out to us @fdntraining.   About Sam:

Samantha Lander, or Sam for short. Has had quite the journey and continues to create more chapters in that journey. She Is a St. Louis, MO-based single mom, recovering addict, prison survivor, personal trainer, functional diagnostic nutritionist, DJs, and entrepreneur. She published “Dream Big, Do bigger” and is an international best selling author. I don’t know if she would say this, but I would definitely say she’s not your typical health practitioner. Her vulnerability and empathy towards her clients sets her apart from the rest.

Sam used Functional Diagnostic Nutrition to heal herself from allergies, food sensitivities, heavy metals, mold, hormonal imbalances (PCOS), mouth trauma and infections and several parasites. She got sick and tired of being sick and tired. All the doctors said she was fine but she followed her gut.

She does a wide variety of service work for people in recovery to help keep her recovery strong. She’s also founder of SeeFit Living where she coaches people back to optimal health when they just can’t quite put their finger on why they feel bad. She is sort of a bad ass in many ways and is so open about her journey.

She helps educate people about health, diet, stress reduction, rest, and proper supplementation to identify the root cause of why they can't perform at their A game. She has been on over 50 podcast educating people through her own personal journey and education. She is an influencer on social media using that platform to help people learn about health and top products to add into your daily life to optimize your health. She is one of the most authentic and REAL woman in the industry.

The Biology Of Trauma w/ Dr.Aimie Apigian06 Nov 202300:57:28

Although trauma and its effects on the body are being discussed more and more in the worlds of natural and functional medicine, for many practitioners, there is still a huge disconnect as to what the actual SCIENCE shows when it comes to trauma's impact on our bodies.

With our guest today on The Health Detective Podcast, Dr. Aimie Apigian, there is NO NEED to wonder any longer as to what the science is telling us. The impact of trauma IS real, and each body can perceive different situations and circumstances as traumatic.

Dr. Aimie's personal experience with trauma was profound enough that she has now dedicated her entire life's work educating the medical system and patients as to how they can effectively work through trauma they may have acquired throughout the years.

If you enjoyed this episode, please shoot Dr. Aimie a message on her Instagram to let her know you appreciate her! www.instagram.com/draimie

About Dr. Aimie:

Dr. Aimie is a double Board-Certified Physician, boarded in both Preventive and Addiction Medicine with Double Masters degrees in Biochemistry and Public Health. She graduated from Loma Linda University in 2010 with her medical degree where she then went on to 3.5 years of general surgery residency. Having been a foster mom and then adoptive mom, she had personal experience with trauma in her home and then non-profit working with other adoptive families and their children until trauma became her own personal story with her body giving in during her surgery residency training.

Through all of these life experiences, she has discovered that life experiences become one's biology, and that trauma is more than our psychology. It requires a specific process and a holistic integrative approach for addressing stored trauma in the body. She left her thriving conventional addiction medicine practice, is a certified functional medicine physician and has numerous trainings and certifications in functional medicine, mental health, addiction and trauma therapy modalities.

Seeing the huge gap in both medicine and mental health for addressing stored trauma and its effects on the body, her mission is now to help 1 million people accelerate their trauma healing journey by addressing the Biology of Trauma, and to bring the model of the Biology of Trauma to every medical and mental health educational system by the year 2041. She does this through her business, Trauma Healing Accelerated, her podcast, The Biology of Trauma with 130,000 downloads, an active youtube channel, free Masterclasses, her annual Biology of Trauma Summits with almost 200,000 registrations, but ultimately inviting people to her educational and experiential courses for individuals and her professional certificate training program.

Mast Cell Activation Syndrome - Functional Health Approaches to Healing w/ Nicole Dube, FDNP02 Nov 202300:48:22
For those dealing with Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS), daily tasks can sometimes seem impossible. Fragrances, cleaners, and even foods you once ate regularly can send your body into overdrive! Our guest today on The Health Detective Podcast, Nicole Dube, was amongst some of the first people to ever receive a diagnosis of MCAS. At her worst, she was down to eating only FOUR foods.   Fast-forward to today, and Nicole is a state-certified dietician-nutritionist, certified nutrition specialist, board-certified holistic nutritionist, and FDNP. She has been in private practice for over a decade helping people recover from MCAS, histamine intolerance, and autoimmunity. Her mission is to teach people to approach healing holistically - addressing body, mind, and spirit in order to give the body the tools it needs to begin healing.   Nicole was on once before where we dove more into her story, but this time, we are talking everything MCAS.   You'll learn about:   1) The different types of MCAS.   2) What are some of the main causes of MCAS?   3) Possibly most importantly, what you can do to help get your health back (even if it currently seems impossible).   We hope you enjoy this episode!   About Nicole:

Like many practitioners, Nicole discovered her passion for holistic health and nutrition through her own health challenges. Over two decades of working in high-stressed, fast-paced government jobs took a toll on her health and she experienced a range of health challenges – everything from autoimmune disease, Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, and POTS. She knew she needed to change how she was living, so she became hooked on everything nutrition and wellness – so much so, that she decided to return to graduate school and turn her passion into a profession. She subsequently came to FDN and found functional lab testing to be the missing piece in both her own healing and her private practice.

Nicole is a state-certified dietician-nutritionist, certified nutrition specialist, board-certified holistic nutritionist, and FDNP. She has been in private practice for over a decade helping people recover from MCAS, histamine intolerance, and autoimmunity. Her mission is to teach people to approach healing holistically - addressing body, mind, and spirit in order to give the body the tools it needs to begin healing.

Should Your Client See A Chiropractor? w/ Dr. Anthony Ratkovic30 Oct 202300:55:25

Fun fact about Functional Diagnostic Nutrition (depending on how you define "fun"):

The FDN methodology was actually created while Reed was working IN a chiropractor's office! In many ways, these different modalities actually share the same core principle: Remove or relieve STRESS from the body to allow it to benefit from it's innate healing ability.

So, on today's episode of The Health Detective Podcast, we thought we'd bring on a fantastic chiropractor who loves his work, Dr. Anthony Ratkovic!

Dr. Ratkovic has been practicing for over 20 years, and the passion he still holds for the work is obvious just by listening to his voice. In this interview, we'll cover things like:

→ The AMAZING way chiropractic medicine gained popularity in the west

→ How almost any client you have could benefit from chiropractic care

→ Why chiropractic medicine and FDN are, philosophically speaking, one in the same

We hope you enjoy this episode! And since Dr. Ratkovic was nice enough to come on with absolutely nothing to sell or offer, we'd appreciate it you could at least send him a kind message or give him a follow @drtonychiro to show your appreciation 🙂.

Is IBS Just BS? w/ Sophie Shepherd, FDNP23 Oct 202300:51:40

JUST in case you're listening to our podcast for the first time, no - we are not for one second suggesting that the SYMPTOMS of IBS are fake/not real. Let us explain...

Our guest today, Sophie Shepherd, was actually diagnosed with IBS herself. It was through her own personal experience in dealing with the condition (and eventually OVERCOMING it completely) that she concluded SOME aspects of the diagnose may in fact be "BS". After all, the diagnosis (if you don't already know) is technically idiopathic, meaning that we don't know what causes it.

With so many people suffering with the symptoms associated with this condition, though, there must be SOMETHING going on. Sophie just may have figured out what that something is, and we share it all in this episode.

About Sophie:

Sophie Shepherd is the founder of SHE Talks Health & the creator of the SHE Talks Health Podcast. Sophie is a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner and NLP Certified Life Coach who helps women transform their hormone, gut and thyroid health. Using a combination of root cause functional lab testing, transformation subconscious mindset reprogramming, and diet and lifestyle science, Sophie and her team, partner with you to create a holistic approach to bringing your body and mind back into balance. Beating Cancer And The Secrets To A Great Mood w/ Annie Mabashov, FDNP19 Oct 202300:52:15

Imagine you go into the doctor's for something that SEEMS like it will have a simple fix, only to get told that, instead, you have a disease that every single one of us fear: cancer. For our guest today on The Health Detective Podcast, Annie Mabashov, this hypothetical scenario was once her reality.

Interestingly, this is NOT another story about someone beating cancer naturally (even though, obviously, these are all amazing stories/testimonials). In today's episode, we are focusing on dealing with "chemo-brain" and the main issues that arise AFTER someone has finished their cancer treatment. We have seen this to be a very underserved community in the functional medicine space, and we are so glad to have Annie on to share her knowledge/experience.

In addition (since most of us are nerds with a bunch of side passions in the health space), we will also talk about a favorite topic of Annie's, which is how our lifestyle affects our mood and mental health.

All of this and more is going down in this jam-packed, inspiring episode!

Fertility Unfiltered: Empowering Women on the Holistic Path to Motherhood with FDN16 Oct 202300:51:52

Did you know that infertility rates are increasing worldwide? In fact, it was reported just in August of this year that the current rate of infertility amongst women is as high as 1 in 6!

Knowing this, an obvious question that might pop up in your head is, "What the heck is happening?"

Our guest today on The Health Detective Podcast, Courtney Saye, not only experienced this seemingly modern phenomenon herself, but has cracked at least part of the code as to what is going on.

Although this can be an extremely emotional toipc for people who have wanted so badly to have children but haven't had success yet, there IS HOPE. Better yet? It might not be nearly as complicated as you think...

Chronic Hives to Certified FDN Health Coach - Erica’s Inspiring Story12 Oct 202300:50:03

Did you know that hives, although fairly common, are NOT normal to deal with chronically?

Sure, rubbing up against the wrong type of plant while hiking could trigger an otherwise harmless reaction, but dealing with this particular symptom on a daily basis (especially if you're just working indoors) is a WARNING sign of something deeper. Our guest today on The Health Detective Podcast, Erica Duffy, knows this all too well.

Not only did Erica discover how to eliminate her hives for good, but she also discovered a VERY unexpected connection between her health challenges and a medical procedure that many women consider totally harmless! (You'll have to listen to find out what it is ;)

Now, as a fully certified Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner, Erica's business is centered on the belief that EVERYONE can achieve a state of vibrant health and comfort in their own skin. She takes pride in helping individuals not only feel better, but also gain the knowledge and tools to maintain lifelong health and happiness.

From Chronic Illness to Health & Vitality: My Story as an FDN Health Coach w/ Kim Heintz, FDNP09 Oct 202300:52:25

Kim Heintz is an FDN who primarily helps her clients reverse debilitating gut issues.

She has been an FDN for 4.5 years, but her own health journey began long before that. She began getting migraines early in life and they intensified in her twenties - to the point where she was getting them 3-5 times a week. When she was 28, she had a migraine that lasted an entire year straight. On top of this, she dealt with a myriad of other symptoms including insomnia, brain fog, chronic fatigue, anxiety, and depression.

She was told by a doctor that she would have to deal with chronic migraines for the rest of her life. Determined to not accept that fate, she ultimately found the functional health space, and it changed her life. Through functional lab testing, she uncovered a lot of gut issues, food sensitivities, and nutrient imbalances. Through addressing those, she no longer gets migraines and all the other symptoms disappeared as well. Not only did her symptoms disappear, but she has taken things to a completely different level. In addition to running her business, she is also a top competitor in long distance mountain biking in the Midwest of the United States, often taking a podium spot. She feels better at 42 than she ever did at 32 and even 22.

Her own life-changing experience is what led her to become an FDN so that she could help others experience the same freedom she has.

First Responders: Taking Control of Your Mental Health Through Functional Medicine w/ Bryanna Austin, FDNP, BCHHP05 Oct 202300:52:58

Depending on how long you've been around FDN, you might remember when today's guest and Detective Ev were going live every week! Her name is Bryanna Austin (formerly Bryanna Lindly), and she has the EXACT same energy as Ev!

Although these two extroverts always have fun together, today's topic is a bit more serious (but much needed) conversation around the mental health of first responders. Bry has experience as a first responder herself, and knows all too well that this community of people has not had their mental health supported in any meaningful way for a long, long time.

This type of episode (depending on who is listening) could make you chuckle, cry, or feel anything in between, too. Most importantly, we hope it leaves you inspired and "fired up" to go out and help make a change for these brave men and women.

About Bryanna ("Bry"):

Bry Austin is a mama to two boys and two fur babies. Her husband and her reside in the Bay area, CA with their little family, and they love anything that brings them outdoors. She firmly believes that being in nature every single day will heal all things and that the body is meant to heal naturally. Bry is extremely passionate about holistic health, thinking outside the box, always challenging the “norm” and helping people break down their own barriers through the functional and holistic lifestyle to unlock the magic that lies within them.

Bry has been an FDNP since 2020 and has had the honor of working in a variety of different “niches” with some really amazing clients. She's gotten to work with people who have been exposed to toxic mold, high-level corporate folks, and all kinds of athletes, to name a few.

Bry's hope is to meet everyone that her story and message resonates with and to inspire folks to dive deep into how the holistic and functional lifestyle can potentially help change their lives in the best of ways.

Trauma’s Impact On Our Nervous System w/ Vennessa McConkey, FDNP02 Oct 202301:01:35

Link to Vennessa's first episode can be found on Apple by clicking here, or Spotify by clicking here

Vennessa is a passionate, energetic, tenacious woman, wife and mom of three young boys. She has always believed in helping people whether it be in the community, schools or corporate world. Her career started early, since both her parents and grandparents were business owners. "Hard work" was highly valued in her family. She attended a science and engineering academy through most of high school, attended Southern Illinois University for Industrial Engineering Technology - graduating in 3 years. She worked her way up the corporate ladder very quickly and found herself running organizations at a young age.

During the course of all this corporate success, she was diagnosed with a rare disease - leaving her relying on many different medical professionals. She finally ended her corporate career and her husband and her became pregnant with their first son. Life seemed good. She started a resume writing and executive career coaching business where the skills she learned in corporate, once again created great success. But two things happened: (1) her health took a nose-dive, and (2) she noticed 85% of her clients struggled with health issues that were affecting how they performed at work. No longer could she morally help people find jobs if their health was affecting more than just them.

In taking a sabbatical, she uncovered some hefty relational issues with her husband and her parents, leading to her discovery of functional nutrition and FDN, that ultimately uncovered how trauma creates disease. Now as a board-certified holistic autoimmune and trauma recovery practitioner, FDN-P, certified functional nutrition coach, speaker and author, Vennessa educates and empowers people to take control of their fatigue and pain during the in-between moments, while confidently owning their journey so they can live a vibrant life.

Salon Owner Tackles Hair Loss with FDN28 Sep 202300:52:00

Is there anything functional medicine CAN'T do? Apparently not, as our guest today, Carrie Hicks, is teaching us how we can even prevent/delay HAIR LOSS through a functional approach.

A long-time stylist and salon owner, Carrie isn't a stranger to working with people who are starting to lose their hair. What WAS new for her, however, was the dramatic increase in hair loss that occurred shortly after the pandemic began. Seeing this firsthand, she was fascinated by what was happening and wanted to give her clients a solution.

Not only did she find the solution for her clients, but the research process transformed her into a health detective, too!

Now, Carrie is on a mission to spread the word that hair loss, contrary to popular belief, can become a thing of the PAST for many people.

We hope you enjoy this episode. Please feel free to ask us any questions by shooting us a direct message @fdntraining. Or talk to Carrie directly @nurish.d

More About Carrie:

Carrie Hicks is a hairstylist and salon owner that had to start looking for real answers to her clients' hair loss after the pandemic in 2020 when an alarming number of female clients lost more than half their hair.  Already certified as a Holistic Nutritionist, not one to believe in quick fixes or band-aids, and on her own self-healing journey, she set out on a journey to find the actual causes of hair loss, and how to successfully treat it.

She took advanced hair loss education courses, attended the World Congress of Trichology, and studied everything she could get her hands on.  She found that most people experiencing hair loss are given prescription medications that can affect one’s hormone health negatively and that 9 times out of 10 no labs were run to assess or manage the effects of these meds.  Other treatments can be invasive, painful, and very expensive, and while they can be effective, if the actual hidden stressors and underlying causes of the hair loss are not addressed, the results obtained with these treatments won’t last long.

Carrie founded Nurish.d Hair loss + Wellness two years ago where she has been helping women with hair loss but knew something was missing in being able to really get to the root cause. She then chose the only logical choice, to become a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner.  Now she does functional lab testing to help her clients see the big picture of their health and identify the actual contributing factors to their hair loss.

Carrie specializes in working with women experiencing hair loss from a wide range of health issues, including PCOS, hypothyroid, insulin resistance, menopause, digestive issues, and chronic stress.  She is currently training her stylists how to help their own clients with a functional perspective on hair loss and is creating a program for other stylists to follow as well because she knows the important role stylists play in their clients' lives and that they have a front row seat to any changes in their health status.

She is the founder of Crimson & Clover Hair Studio in Flagstaff, AZ and Nurish.d Hair Loss + Wellness and is a licensed Cosmetologist, a Certified Holistic Nutritionist, and a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner.

Brendan is not only an FDNP, but he is a pioneer in the functional medicine space, particularly around the topic of mental health. After struggling greatly with his own mental health (and watching the mental health challenges of a loved one), Brendan dedicated his life to figuring out the many reasons WHY there is such a widescale mental health crisis around the world.

Not only did he come to some amazing realizations, but he has put things together from the research that are truly unique. This is NOT your average mental health podcast episode, that's for sure.

We hope you enjoy this one, and if you have any follow-up questions, you may always reach out to us anytime at @fdntraining on Instagram.

He is the proud owner and founder of the Metabolic Solutions Institute for Functional Health and Fitness Practitioners and the creator of the Functional Mental Health Practitioner Certificate Course (FMHP™). He is also the founder of the Metabolic Solutions Research & Education Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation dedicated to ‘changing the way the world views mental health’ through advancing the science of Mental Health Dysfunction.  He is also the creator of The Mental M.A.P.™, a cutting-edge Lab Panel for Mental Health, and the NeuroCeuticals™ Supplement Line.

Respect the Rest: The Antidote to 21st Century Burnout Culture w/ Scott Shortmeyer, FDNP21 Sep 202300:53:14

While we do not like to stereotype, on paper, Scott Shortmeyer is one of those people that we'd least expect to get into the world of functional medicine and natural healing. After some significant warning signs from his body, though, Scott knew it was time for a change. Thanks to the help of his wife, he was able to get on the right track fairly quickly!

Like so many of our guests, Scott has now effectively turned his pain into his passion, and proudly hosts The Rest and Recovery Podcast. In addition, he is a recent FDN graduate who is now working with (primarily) men to help them stay healthy long after their youthful years have passed.

Yes - You Can Do FDN In AUSTRALIA! w/ Antoinette Barnardo, FDN-P18 Sep 202300:42:20

14 years ago, FDN was being taught as an in-person course that you could complete in one long weekend. Since then, we've evolved into a course that has over 4,000 graduates in 50+ countries around the world!

One of the countries we are seeing increasing demand in is Australia. With different, ever-changing laws and opposite time zones, many people ask us whether or not they will be fully supported as an Australian FDN trainee. The answer is (thankfully) absolutely, 100% YES!

To explain how FDN works across in Australia, we are interviewing Antoinette Barnardo, an FDN Course Mentor who works and lives there!

Best yet? Like all of our FDN mentors, she has a REAL health story and actually graduated from the program herself.

BEST Functional Medicine Course For... Pets? w/ Dr. Ruth Roberts14 Sep 202300:53:19

On today's episode of The Health Detective Podcast, we are talking once again with a woman on a mission to help pets around the world, Dr. Ruth Roberts!

Dr. Roberts was a huge hit the last time she recorded with us! She gave us all the latest insights into keeping our furry friends healthy (you can listen to that episode by clicking here), as well as how we can actually pursue a legitimate career working with people's pets through her Pet Wellness Program.

Now that we have had multiple FDNs successfully go through Dr. Roberts' program with nothing but amazing things to say, we felt it was only right to have her back on to talk about he program itself. (WARNING: You'll also get Detective Ev asking a bunch of random pet related questions!)

Would you like to see more of Dr. Roberts in the future? Let us know by shooting us a direct message on Instagram: @fdntraining.

About Dr. Roberts:

During her 30-year career as a DVM, Dr. Ruth Roberts has become one of the nation’s foremost experts in holistic and integrative veterinary medicine. After graduating from North Carolina State University in 1990, Dr. Roberts began her career practicing traditional, Western medicine. The onset of simultaneous health challenges for both her and her dog Arnold, however, prompted Dr. Roberts to seek solutions outside of the traditional realm of veterinary care she had learned in her textbooks.

Dr. Roberts furthered her education by absorbing the principles of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine at the Chi Institute in Florida. Her studies there would eventually form the foundation for her philosophy that “good health begins in the bowl.” She is certified in Acupuncture, Chinese Herbology and Food Therapy.

In 2006, Dr. Roberts founded The Original Crockpot Diet and continues to see the dramatic results it makes in the health of her patients. She is a leading consultant in integrative veterinary medicine and advises clients in the United States and internationally through her website DrRuthRoberts.com.

Dr. Ruth is on a mission to empower pet parents and foster a vibrant community, to ignite a global movement for natural pet health, led by Dr. Ruth and Holistic Pet Health Coaches. Our aim is to equip you with the tools and knowledge to champion your pet's wellbeing, making every tail wag and content purr a testament to our commitment.

Unlocking Mental Wellness: Navigating Mind and Body Harmony with Lucy McKellar, FDNP11 Sep 202300:55:06

On today's episode of The Health Detective Podcast, we are interviewing the Executive Director of the Association of Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioners, Lucy McKellar!

Lucy's life took an unexpected twist when she suddenly started experiencing panic attacks, seemingly out of nowhere. Growing up she had a typical upbringing, and now had a steady job and good friends. The concept of "mental health" wasn't even on her radar. Then, one night, she was jolted awake by a panic attack, convinced she was about to die. From that moment, her life became an unending cycle of fear, dominating her every waking moment.

Desperate for answers, Lucy embarked on   a ten-year journey through the labyrinth of mental health struggles, consulting numerous doctors, but finding no relief. Ten years into her battle, Lucy uncovered a profound truth: the interconnectedness of mind and body. This revelation became the catalyst for her path to mental well-being. Through determination and self-discovery, she managed to regain control over her mental health, ultimately becoming an advocate for mental health awareness.

Today, Lucy is doing FANTASTIC. And while she is not actively taking clients, she still wanted to come on and share her story so that people who are actively dealing with mental health symptoms such as hers can have hope for a better future!

Thyroid Triumphs and Gut Healing: Empowering Women’s Wellness Journeys07 Sep 202300:44:32

If we had a dollar for every time someone (particularly women) did not get their thyroid condition(s) addressed properly by western medicine, we could probably all be living on a beach somewhere!

Unfortunately, we don't get paid for that. Instead, we get the next best thing: Bringing you podcasts with awesome guests like the one today, Lindsey Akenclose, to share their personal journey and tips to get through these types of struggles.

Equally as great as her health story is Lindsey's willingness to come on while so new into her business. We know how much our audience appreciates hearing from fresh faces and functional healthcare veterans alike, so it is our privilege to be able to bring you both types of interviews!

If you'd like to learn more about the Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Certification program, you may DM us directly on Instagram @fdntraining. Alternatively, you can try the course for FREE (no credit card entry required) at fdntraining.com/tryfdn.

About Lindsey:

Lindsey became super passionate about functional health and learning to advocate for herself when she discovered her own personal health issues related to the thyroid and gut. As she began her own healing journey, she realized that women are truly left in the dark and misinformed about such important health issues. She no longer wanted to see women suffering unnecessarily.

Because of this realization, she decided to launch her own business in functional healthcare. Lindsey's business is still very new, so we appreciate her even more for coming on and sharing where she is at with us!

What Does Testing For HIDDEN Stressors Mean? - Intro to FDN Series w/ Detective Ev10 Aug 202300:26:49

In this episode, we are continuing our “Intro to FDN” series! Please make sure you’re listening in order so that everything makes sense. Here is the link to the FIRST episode of the series where we discuss the ONLY “diagnosis” FDN practitioners hand out, metabolic chaos: https://spotify.link/Zd5OlSW03Bb

And here is the link to the SECOND episode where we discuss FDN’s trademarked “DRESS” protocol: https://spotify.link/hjeSHPTZ8Bb

Today, we are discussing most people’s favorite part: the labs! Unlike many other functional practitioners, FDNs always start with the same set of labs on every client. You can remember these tests with the acronym HIDDEN, which stands for hormones, immune system, digestion, detoxification, energy production and nervous system. These labs were not chosen randomly or on a whim. They were carefully selected after the founder of FDN, Reed Davis, ran over 11,000 labs on clients in his own practice. After listening, we think it will be crystal clear as to how and why we still use this particular set of labs to this day.

As always, if you have any follow-up questions, reach out to us @fdntraining on Instagram to talk to one of our staff members! Alternatively, you can book a call with Ev or one of the other Course Advisors anytime by going to FDNtraining.com/call.

What is Our Trademarked ”DRESS” Protocol? - Intro to FDN Series w/ Detective Ev07 Aug 202300:20:23

Today, we are discussing our trademarked DRESS system that is a core part of every FDN program. DRESS stands for diet, rest, exercise, stress-reduction and supplementation. Without understanding the significance of this acronym, almost NONE of the stuff we teach about labs matters.

Ulcerative Colitis: The MANY Contributing Factors w/ Tina Haupert, FDN-P31 Jul 202300:57:44

Does being an FDN practitioner mean every little health symptom you've ever had has to be perfect? Absolutely not. What it DOES mean is that you are someone who will continuously "walk the walk" of being healthy. It means you will never give up trying new things until you get the results you want. It also means you are willing to do whatever you can to help others along their own healing journey. Our guest today, Tina Haupert, is a PERFECT example of all of this!

Tina diagnosed with ulcerative colitis over a decade ago, which was particularly surprising to her since she engaged in many "healthy" lifestyle habits. While she did what she could for the diagnosis at the time, in the back of her head, she also knew that what she had been told was a bit scary, and as a result, it didn't quite get the attention that it deserved.

Fast-forward several years, and the symptoms got bad enough that Tina could no longer pretend it would one day go away on it's own. Worse yet, she started dealing with a myriad of other symptoms, too, ones that are not too dissimilar from many of the ones our other guests have experienced. It was at that point that she knew some MAJOR changes needed to occur.

As of today, Tina has been an FDNP for 4 years and has a thriving practice. She feels significantly better, and has managed to get her UC into remission through a combination of lifestyle changes and medication. It is also worth noting that she is still progressing on her healing journey, so who knows what a couple more years will bring?

If you're someone who has been diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, this is DEFINITELY for you. Let us know what you think, and if you have any questions you can reach out to Tina on IG @carrotsncake, or message us directly @fdntraining.

About Tina:

Tina Haupert is a Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioner (FDN-P), certified nutrition coach, cookbook author, podcast host, wife, mom, and the creative mind behind Carrots ‘N’ Cake. Tina and her coaching team work one-on-one with clients, utilizing functional testing and a macro-based nutrition approach to help them enhance their metabolism and diet to achieve their health and body composition goals. Tina was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis 12 years ago and is also an active IBD advocate.

Annihilating Addison’s Disease w/ Vennessa McConkey, FDN-P27 Jul 202300:57:56

We have a couple of "firsts" today on The Health Detective Podcast...

One of the firsts is that we have never (to Detective Ev's knowledge) had someone on who dealt with Addison's Disease, a relatively rare condition that includes damage to the adrenal glands. The other first is that we have never had a guest be such an amazing story teller that they were able to take the FIRST QUESTION of the podcast and run with it for almost 40 minutes in an incredibly engaging way! These firsts are brought to you by our guest, Vennessa McConkey.

We hope you enjoy this episode as much as Detective Ev did in recording it. As always, any questions can be directed to us on Instagram @fdntraining

”Medical Foods” - The Best Of Pharma And Supplements COMBINED? w/ Dr. Mike Sinel20 Jul 202300:55:16
Medical Foods: Foods that are specially formulated and intended for the dietary management of a disease that has distinctive nutritional needs that cannot be met by normal diet alone. (If you haven't heard of these wonderful products yet, then this episode of The Health Detective Podcast is a MUST listen.)   Medical foods are a unique set of formulations with a STRONG scientific-backing to aid in the management of specific, often common conditions. In addition, they combine the best of both worlds (meaning the best of functional and western medicine). On one hand, they have the scientific studies and quality behind them that would be expected from pharmaceuticals, but on the other, the ingredients are all things you could find in supplements from the health food store.    Best yet? Our guest today, Dr. Mike Sinel, believes in his company so much, he allows everyone (even your clients) to try the first formulation of their choice for FREE!   If you or your clients struggle with sleep issues, pain, mood disorders, or even issues with focus, then these are products you need to be looking into.   Let us know what you think, and if you have questions, shoot us a DM on Instagram @fdntraining.com.   About Dr. Mike

After completing his residency at Cornell University Medical Center & Memorial Sloan Kettering in New York, Dr. Sinel served as Director of Outpatient Physical Medicine at Cedars Sinai Medical Center and as Asst. Clinical Professor at the UCLA School of Medicine. In addition, Dr. Sinel lectured on alternative approaches to pain and the mind-body connection at well-known institutions including UCLA and the Esalen Institute.

As a nationally recognized expert in spinal disorders and pain management, Dr. Sinel also authored several scientific articles and two well-known books on back pain including Back Pain Remedies for Dummies. While serving on multiple scientific and business advisory boards in the Healthcare sector, Dr. Sinel recently acquired Physician Therapeutics. (https://www.medicalfoodsinfo.com) He is passionate about reducing the side effects of pharmaceuticals by bringing safe scientifically proven encapsulated medical foods as natural alternatives for pain, sleep, obesity, neuropathy, fatigue & cognitive decline.

Differentiating Gluten Allergies, Sensitivities, Intolerances, and Celiac Disease w/ Detective Ev, FDNP17 Jul 202300:26:20

In over 250 episodes of The Health Detective Podcast, we have never repeated an episode (not even close). However, a recent event reminded Detective Ev that sometimes things really are worth reviewing in full. Because of this, we are covering something that even functional practitioners often can't explain well. That is the differences between gluten allergies, sensitivities, intolerances, and of course, celiac disease.

We hope the episode is clear and concise, but if you have questions, you can always reach out to us @fdntraining on Instagram. We have staff members working there night and day to respond to anything you need :).

ER MD By Night, Holistic Health Practitioner By Day w/ Dr. Heather Hammerstedt, MD13 Jul 202300:57:19

On today's episode of the Health Detective Podcast, we are talking to someone who is both an ER doctor AND health coach, Dr. Heather Hammerstedt!

Dr Heather Hammerstedt is an emergency medicine physician with a specialized board certification in lifestyle medicine, as well as additional certifications and trainings in integrative nutrition, health coaching, medical acupuncture, Ayurveda, public and global health.  She has 18 years of medical expertise and 19 years coaching experience, having gone to get her health coaching certificate during medical school (way back ) when she realized the HUGE hole in our medical education around food and mindfulness and exercise.

At this point, she’s put in 1000s of hours of deep diving into food and weight and mindset to put together a (kick a**) lifestyle transformation blueprint to get women to long term health without products or BS, with real food and lifelong SKILLS for sustainable health futures… with a side effect of weight wellness. She offers personal and group weight wellness coaching, personal and group mental fitness coaching, lifestyle medicine education courses, AND affiliates with healthcare providers and physician clinics to implement Wholist programming with their clients and patients.

It's rare that we get someone on the show who has such an extensive background in both holistic and western medicine. We hope you enjoy the unique perspectives that she brings. If you have any questions, please reach out to us @fdntraining on Instagram! Shoot us a DM.

Why Some Health Coaches STRUGGLE w/ Detective Ev, FDN-P10 Jul 202300:17:34

We typically get two types of health coaches calling us at FDN:

1)  Health coaches who are struggling in their business and stuck on their health journey (most common).

2) Health coaches who have actually done really well on the business and/or health side, but want a system that allows them to serve their clients at a higher level (less common).

What Detective Ev has noticed on calls with people interested in the FDN course is that there is a consistent pattern in the coaches who find themselves struggling. Worse yet, it's really not even their fault most of the time!
