59. Understand Your Core Values and Priorities in Order to Manage Your Time.18 Aug 202300:09:59

Happy Friday, my Friends!

Do you remember in Episode 53 we talked about creating a vision for your God-sized life?  Creating that vision is really the first step in understanding what is important to spend your time on.  From that vision, we can begin to look at our core values and priorities, which will be the gauge against which we weigh each decision of whether to say “yes” or “no” to requests for our time.

Imagine yourself living that vision. Now, for just a brief moment, imagine never reaching that vision.   Imagine continuing on in your busy and out of balance life.  How does that make you feel?   I don’t know about you, but that is not a place I want to stay.  I feel much better living the dream.

I am thinking about the priorities that exist in that space.  What are the things I need to focus on to get closer to that vision?   You need to ask yourself the same thing.   What are the areas of priority for spending your time now in order to move yourself toward your God-sized vision.

I hope this episode blesses you!

Xoxo,

Tanya

58. Is Productivity a Dirty Word to Those You Lead? 5 Tips for Facilitating a Change in Perspective.🤓14 Aug 202300:17:35

Let me ask you a question.  When I say the word “productivity”, what is the first thought or feeling you have?  Do you think of it in positive terms or is it a dirty word in your world?  Personally, I feel best when I am efficient and productive.  I like to feel the sense of accomplishment that comes with checking things off of my project list, especially when it means I am able to find more time for the people and the things that fill me up.

Isn’t it ironic that when we talk about being productive at home or in the work that we assign ourselves, we generally think of it in a positive light, right?  Like if I can crank out content for 3 episodes instead of one, or I get all of my laundry done in one day, I am thrilled to have produced more with my efforts!

If I can effectively use my time to accomplish more, I feel good about it.  But now on the flip side, when we think about productivity in the workplace and talk about it with those we lead, is it perceived as positive?  Often not.  Oftentimes, people perceive productivity to be a measure by which an organization pushes its people to work harder in order to make the company more money.

So how do we shift that narrative so that our people don’t see productivity as another four-letter word in their vocabulary?  Today I am going to share a few tips that have helped me and my leaders, and will hopefully help you.

I hope this episode blesses you!

Xoxo,

Tanya

55. When Is It Ok to Say ”NO” to God-Honoring Work?04 Aug 202300:20:42

As Christ-followers and servant leaders, sometimes we get confused and overwhelmed by all of the opportunities to serve that come our way.  I recently spoke to an amazing Christian woman who serves in and outside her work place in so many ways.  It is amazing that she is still standing upright.

This lovely woman serves professionally in profound ways.  She serves her family and her church in huge ways.

But as I listened it sounded as if all of the commitments related to serving are squeezing out time for herself, and she's struggling to create more time and space for quiet time with God, for things that bring her joy and for healthy goals that she has.

Her beautiful service-oriented heart leads her to feel like she has to say yes to everything that would be considered God-honoring work. It's so important to her to be a dedicated follower of Christ.

Christ is an example of servant leadership. But are we actually supposed to say yes to every form of service that comes our way?  If not, how do we know when it is ok to say “no” to God-honoring work?

Today we are talking about ways to determine what is truly a God-assignment for you and what is perhaps intended for someone else.  God-honoring does not always equate to God-assigned or God-appointed.  I am giving you permission to say “no” when you can’t give it your “Best Yes”.

I hope this episode blesses you!

In today’s episode, we talk about discerning when to say yes and when to say no to things that demand our time.  Lissa talks to us about giving things our “Best Yes” or a grace-filled “no”.

Lissa and I align so much on our philosophy around time management starting with our hearts and being built on a foundation of faith.  Lissa shares about the importance of pouring from a full cup.

53. Take This First Step to Create the Time and the Life You Want.28 Jul 202300:11:14

Do you have a vision of what you wish your life would look like?  If not, why not?  Do you think the life you want is impossible to have? Today we are talking about the first step in creating the life you want to be living.

Today I am going to walk you through a little vision-casting exercise.  This is a very important step in opening the door to the life God has waiting for you.  This is best done with notebook and pen and in a quiet place.

Friends, I encourage you to just take time to create a God-sized vision for your life.   Use that vision as a reference point to gauge your actions, decisions and priorities.

Taking time to create this vision can bring such a sense of hope, peace and purpose.  It also allows you to feel what it would mean to live that dream and what it would mean if you never did.

Tune in with a journal and a pen because this is a very tactical episode!

I hope this episode blesses you!

52. 4 Ways to Live and Lead with a Boldness of Faith.24 Jul 202300:15:10

Hello my Stellas!

Last week I went with my family to see the Sound of Freedom movie.  If you haven’t seen it, I would highly encourage you to do so.  The degree to which the enemy tried to keep this movie from ever making it into theaters is astonishing!  All major film outlets were refusing to release it.  BUT GOD!

I believe people are hungry for truth, justice and honor and they are using their voices and their dollars to say so.

I walked away from that movie thinking, “WOW…now that is an example of being BOLD in your faith, regardless of the risk!”  Today, that is what we are talking about…  what it means to be bold in your faith when it comes to your work life.

Are we willing to follow God’s call on our lives regardless of the risk?  Are we ready to be bold in our faith and be uncompromising in our values, even when it goes against the grain or is unpopular?

I am nowhere near as courageous as the Tim Ballards and Jim Caviezels of the world, but I am waking up to some of the ways in which I can be more courageous when it comes to standing firmly on God’s truth.  I wanted to share a few examples of what that looks like for me and what it might look like for you, specifically in your professional lives.

I hope this episode blesses you!

50. Having Mom Guilt as a Busy Professional Woman? 3 Steps to Break Free from the Guilt.17 Jul 202300:22:19

Do you ever feel Mom-guilt as a professional woman?  Do you worry that you are not giving your kids the time and attention they deserve because you work full-time?   Do you sometimes feel envy or resentment toward women who have chosen and are able to be stay-at-home moms?  Maybe you can’t be the classroom helper, the field trip chaperone or make it to every single event for your children and you worry they are going to be negatively impacted by that.

How about this one…your career is really important to you and you feel guilty that you don’t want to be a stay-at-home mom.   You impose guilt upon yourself because you “should” want to be with your kids 100% of the time instead of pursuing your career goals…

Or maybe you have to work full time in order to provide for your family, but you worry that you aren’t able to do both roles well.   It’s important to you to be a great mom and a great worker, and you somehow feel like the two are mutually exclusive.

Are you now an empty nester and realizing that you worked so hard that you didn’t spend the time you wish you would have with your kids when they were younger?

Well, today we are going to dig in to this topic and speak truth over it.  Turn up the volume, my guilt-ridden mammas, cuz you need to hear this word today!!

I hope this episode blesses you!

49. Feeling Guilty About Taking Time Away From Your 9 to 5? Not Today Satan!14 Jul 202300:13:35

Hey, Friend!

Summer is the time of year when many of us like to take a bit more time away from work.  But let me ask you this, do you feel guilty when you take time off from your 9 to 5?  Do you worry about what your team will think?  Do you worry about how much work will be waiting for you when you get back?  I know what that is like, but today we are going to cover that stinky nonsense in some of God’s wonderfully fragrant and life-giving truth!

For decades, I allowed that stinky thinking rob me and my family of time…time spent together, but more often even if together, time spent in which I was able to be present.  If I wasn’t physically at work, chances are I was thinking about work, feeling anxious about work, or checking emails to try to avoid feeling anxious about work (which of course had the opposite effect).  It really was all self-imposed.  I placed that pressure on myself.  Well, this past year, all praise to God, I am finding real freedom from that guilt.

Guilt over taking time away… Not Today Satan!

I hope this episode blesses you!

48. Lacking Confidence in Your Leadership Skills? Try These 5 Things.10 Jul 202300:12:20

Do you want the confidence to lead “like a boss”?  Today’s episode is kind of about “Leading Like a Boss”, only not.   In my opinion, leaders are leaders, and that is not the same as being a boss…. But we want to lead well…   Part of leading well means building confidence.   That is difficult to do, especially if you are new to leadership or if you are a perfectionist, people-pleaser, high-achiever, etc.

So how do you go about building confidence in your leadership?  Today we are talking about a few places to start.   We talk about the importance of self-investment and self-awareness, developing emotional intelligence and learning from other leaders.

If you are anything like me, building confidence as a leader is a journey…a journey I am still on.

Happy Friday, Friends!

Today is a little divergence from our typical episodes.  I sit down for a little conversation with my 20-somethings to get their perspective on freedom and faith.  It is a rare occasion in which we are all under one roof for the week as we celebrate our country's Independence Day.   In the hustle and bustle of raising babies, I never imagined how very much I would miss and cherish every minute with them.  Tune in for a casual conversation about faith and freedom with my favorite human beings on the planet!

46. What Does Freedom Mean to You? 6 Ways I am Living Free in 2023.03 Jul 202300:15:37

In honor of Independence Day, which is tomorrow if you are listening to this episode when it publishes, I wanted to pop in to talk a little bit about Freedom, what it means to me, and what it means in my daily life and leadership.

We start with a little history lesson, but then we get into a few personal freedoms I find myself enjoying this 49th year of mine.  It is sometimes the simple things in life that bring about the greatest sense of freedom.

Midlife, in partnership with God, is showing me freedoms I never would have imagined experiencing had you asked me in the not-so-distant past.

Pull up your lawn chair and have a listen my friends!

45. God Calls Us to Manage Our Time. ⏳30 Jun 202300:10:15

In Monday’s episode #44, we talked about a few strategies to learn how to reduce burnout by leaving work at work.  It starts with God and it includes time management and a shift in our thinking.  And guess what…   The bible backs this up.

Putting God first is something we are clearly instructed to do.   Therefore, it only makes sense for me to start my day in communion with him.   If morning does not bring out the best version of you to spend time with Him, then put it as a #1 priority item, but schedule it when and where you are able to give him your attention.  Regardless of where you schedule it, treat it as priority #1.

Make no mistake, God intended for us to work and to do good work.  But he also intends for us to rest in Him and to use our time wisely for His purposes.

The more time we spend in God’s word, understanding his will for our lives, the more we grow in wisdom as to what is worth saying “yes” to and what isn’t.

If Jesus is our example for living, and God is the source of all wisdom, doesn’t it make complete sense that He is the first place we need to start when looking at how to lead our most productive and present life?

I hope this episode blesses you!

42. Imposter Syndrome in Leadership: What Is It? 🤔19 Jun 202300:12:48

Do you often find yourself:

  1. Struggling with perfectionism?
  2. Lacking self-confidence?
  3. Having anxiety and doubts about your ideas, abilities, achievements and accomplishments?
  4. Partaking in a lot of negative self-talk?
  5. Having feelings of inadequacy?
  6. Dwelling on past mistakes?
  7. Feeling like you are not good enough?

Do you worry about not meeting expectations?

Do you feel like a fraud and eventually the whole world is going to see the truth about who you are (or rather who you aren’t)…that you aren’t really as capable or as smart as people think and just got where you are out of pure luck or coincidence?

If any of these ring true, you may have a touch (or full-blown case) of Imposter Syndrome.  In fact, many high-achieving and successful people, do. To be clear, Imposter Syndrome is not a mental illness or diagnosis.  It is a pattern of thinking that impacts our behaviors.

Imposter Syndrome is “the persistent inability to believe that one's success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one's own efforts or skills.”  Sound familiar?  If so…tune in to hear the whole episode!

41. ✝️ Grace and Faith Friday: Biblical Instruction for Integrity.16 Jun 202300:14:20

Happy Friday, Friends!

This week we have been talking about integrity.  As Christians, our faith journey is one in which we seek to be more and more like Christ.  In doing so, we are actually called to live with integrity.  We are told (and shown) that God rewards integrity.

Today I wanted to look at some of the biblical references that point us to a life lived with integrity.

The Gospel actually tells us to demonstrate integrity in that we should do everything as if we are doing it for the Lord.  In the book of Colossians, chapter 3, the Apostle Paul is outlining how we should live as believers, with our focus being on Christ.  In Chapter 3:23-24 he says, “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

The bible is filled with stories that demonstrate God’s reward for living a life of integrity and pure faith in Him.  Tune in to hear more!

I hope this episode blesses you and that you will continue to join me on this journey toward balance, peace, and freedom to live the abundant life you were called to.

40. 3 Ways to Demonstrate Integrity in Leadership.12 Jun 202300:17:00

Hello, Friend!

Let me ask you this… do you demonstrate integrity in your leadership?  Do you demonstrate integrity in your personal and professional life?  What does that even mean?   Well today that is what we are talking about.  We are talking about integrity and what that looks like in leadership.  As you listen, I want you to consider, who stands out in your mind as someone who lives and leads with integrity.  I also want you to take a good hard look at whether you make it on the list.

In assessing your level of integrity, ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Am I setting a good example for my team members?
  2. Do I act in a way that builds trust with my team members?
  3. Do I take responsibility for my mistakes?
  4. Do I hold myself accountable for my decisions and behaviors?
  5. Do I follow through on commitments and communications?

I believe that integrity is the cornerstone of great leadership.  It is the key to building a positive, trusting work environment that leads to loyalty and productivity.  It is also a key behavioral indicator to look for when recruiting or promoting team members.

Dwight Eisenhower is quoted as saying: “The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity. Without it, no real success is possible, whether it is on a section gang, a football field, in an army, or in an office.”

Something that important, is certainly worth some discussion…tune in to hear more!

I hope this episode blesses you and that you will continue to join me on this journey toward balance, peace, and freedom to live the abundant life you were called to.

Today’s episode was inspired by a recent interview I watched with the President of El Salvador.  His is such a remarkable and refreshing story.  In the interview, he explained how he took what was the murder capital of the world to the safest country in the western hemisphere.

In the particular interview I watched, he shared both the tactical, what he called the “official” process of how he and his government accomplished this in 3 years, and he shared what he called the “real” secret to how this was accomplished.  It was a tremendous message that I wish our people and our country would seriously listen to and understand.

In this episode, I talk about what he said, and tie it back to what I have experienced in my own leadership.

This is really important stuff, so you aren’t going to want to miss it!

Key Highlights:

  • The REAL story behind El Salvador’s leader accomplishing the impossible
  • 3 years to go from murder capital of the world to safest country in the western hemisphere
  • The FIRST step in building a successful, peaceful and abundant society
  • How we can apply this leader’s philosophy to our own leadership

I hope this episode blesses you!

37. ✝️ Grace and Faith Friday: Replace the Enemy’s Lies with God’s Truth.02 Jun 202300:16:41

Hey, Friend!

We can truly train our brain to experience life differently by practicing thought patterns that focus on God’s truth versus the enemy’s lies about who we are.

Changing our narrative or our thought patterns is much like riding a bike.  We start out falling down and crashing into trees, but eventually, we are able to travel miles without even thinking about it.

Our mindset and personal narrative are similar.  Once you develop a pattern of focusing on God’s truths and focus on ways to positively move forward, you develop a more natural tendency to do that regardless of your circumstances.  This allows you to leave behind a life experience that has you playing the victim role and instead live in the victory that a life of faith offers.  It allows you to ditch pitiful and claim powerful.

I hope this episode blesses you and that you will continue to join me on this journey toward balance, peace, and freedom to live the abundant life you were called to.

Friends, this message hit me today unexpectedly, and I felt led to share it immediately.  It is not perfected and polished because the Lord wanted you to hear it in real-time.  Forgive the imperfections and focus on the message.  This was truly a God Download that stopped me in my tracks while out on a walk over my lunch break.  Someone was meant to hear this today.  If that is you, God sees you, hears you, and loves you.  Turn your gaze toward him.  SEEK HIM NOW...Tomorrow is too late.

I hope this episode blesses you!

36. Do You Want to Change Your Life? 5 Steps to Change Your Story. 📖29 May 202300:16:30

Hey, Friend!

Are you sick and tired of riding the struggle bus?  Do you find yourself spending most of your time frustrated and focused on the wrongs that have been done unto you?  Do you feel burned out and irritated with the world?  Well guess what…you can live a different existence.  You do not have to stay on the hot mess express!

I spent a lot of years thinking of my story and future from a very limited perspective.  I created a narrative in which I was limiting my potential to my own negative beliefs about myself, rather than claiming the powerful story that is mine through Christ.  So many of us are choosing to live a narrative that leaves us pitiful versus powerful.  It makes us a victim rather than a victor.  We believe the lies we and the enemy tell ourselves and they become our story.  By telling ourselves these negative messages over and over, we are actually wiring our brains to live a negative existence.

Today I teach you 4 steps that can change your life.

I hope this episode blesses you and that you will continue to join me on this journey toward balance, peace, and freedom to live the abundant life you were called to.

33. ✝️ Grace and Faith Friday: Love Letter From Your Father.19 May 202300:10:39

Happy Grace and Faith Filled Friday, Friend!

Have you ever found yourself feeling insignificant, unworthy, or undeserving of the love God has for you?

Today I am speaking God’s truth of his love over you, in the form of a Love Letter from Your Heavenly Father.

God’s love surpasses our human understanding.  He sent his son to become our sin, to die on the cross so that we might be redeemed and brought back into relationship with him as sons and daughters.

Do you think he sees you as insignificant?

Do you think he sees you as unworthy of his love?

No!  When he looks at you, he sees Jesus. When you accept the gift of grace and love fully within your heart,

  • You will walk differently in the world.
  • You will pour from a full cup.
  • You can truly be grace-giving because you are filled and overflowing with grace.
  • You will want to serve to honor God, not to gain approval from man.

The bible is filled with scripture that speaks of our Father’s love.  It is filled with scripture that tells us who we are and WHOSE we are.

Let the words in this message wash over you.  Receive it and Believe it!

I hope this episode blesses you and that you will continue to join me on this journey toward balance, peace, and freedom to live the abundant life you were called to.

32.💗 Growing In a Heart Knowledge of Who I Am In Christ15 May 202300:30:20

Hey Friend!

Have you ever found yourself feeling insignificant, unworthy, or undeserving of the love God has for you?

For most of my life, I have had a head knowledge that I am saved and that Jesus loves me, but I never truly felt worthy.  I wasn’t walking with the heart knowledge of what salvation and the love of God means for me in my everyday life.

My identity has always been based in who I was for someone else…   girlfriend, daughter, wife, mother, leader.  My sense of value and worth came completely from external sources.  I had been trying to prove myself worthy to those around me, all the while feeling insignificant and invisible.

This has manifested itself in many ways throughout my life…  anxiety, panic disorder, body shame, disordered eating, unhealthy relationships, over-functioning at work, Imposter syndrome.

Over the past several years, I realized that I had wandered too far away from the only audience that matters.   I had become distant from God and was not seeking intimacy of relationship with Jesus.  I was not walking with a heart knowledge of who I am as a daughter of the King.  I knew that I desperately needed to depend on God and find my value in him because I could no longer find it in the world.

Today I share a message about my journey, the 12-inch journey from my head to my heart, that took the better part of 49 years.  I talk about the difference it has made in my life and the freedom I have found.

I hope this episode blesses you and that you will continue to join me on this journey toward balance, peace, and freedom to live the abundant life you were called to.

143. Mess Up? Fess Up! The Power of Humility in Frontline Leadership.18 Jun 202400:13:25

Today, we talk about the power of humility in frontline leadership.

When done appropriately, showing our humanness can be powerful in building trust and respect within our teams. Many leaders see admitting mistakes or being wrong as a sign of weakness. But in truth, sincere admission of mistakes coupled with a genuine intention to do better in the future is a profound strength.

Of course, if you keep making the same mistakes without changing, you will lose any trust you might have initially gained. Conversely, never owning up to your mistakes will almost certainly erode trust, respect, and confidence. As leaders, we must model the behavior we want to see in our teams. We want our team members to feel comfortable coming to us with their mistakes or concerns. Why would they take the risk of being vulnerable if they don’t see it modeled and reinforced by their leader?

There is immense power in humility, my friends, so don’t be afraid to show it as a leader. The key to turning failure into success is to be honest about it, learn from it, and take action to improve.

I hope this episode blesses you!

30. What Do Gardening and Leadership Have in Common?08 May 202300:20:52

Hey, Friend!

If you are listening to this episode when it publishes, we are in the beginning of May.  I live in Minnesota, and we have winter for far too long.  When May rolls around, you hear people start talking about how anxious they are to get out and start growing things…   whether it be flowers or vegetable gardens, spring brings about a hunger to see new beautiful life and color.   This got me thinking about the metaphor of gardening as it applies to leadership, and more specifically, how it applies to Godly leadership.

Before you can ever start the process of growing your garden, you…the gardener, need to make sure you have prepared yourself for the work.  If you try to plant a garden without having done any study of the task at hand, you may produce some fruit, but it will pale in comparison of what you can produce having the knowledge and tools to do the work well.

And, if you just take your seeds and you show up to your plot of dirt and scatter the seeds across the top, what are the odds that you are going to have a beautiful garden that produces delectable fruit?  Not very good odds there…right…?  No.

Producing fruit requires that you dedicate the time and effort to take the appropriate steps to prepare the soil and nourish the seedlings.

Tune in as we talk a bit more about gardening and its application to everyday life and leadership…

I hope this episode blesses you and that you will continue to join me on this journey toward balance, peace, and freedom to live the abundant life you were called to.

26. Discerning God’s Voice: 7️ Ways to Know If You are Hearing from God.24 Apr 202300:20:23

Hey, Friend!

Have you ever heard people say “God told  me", or "God said", or "I feel God telling me to (fill in the blank)”? Have you found yourself thinking, "Geesh…. I wish God would talk to me a bit more clearly!"   I certainly have found myself thinking that.  Sometimes I think God needs to literally send me a neon blinking sign for me to be certain He is trying to tell me something.  Recently, however, I am learning a bit more about how to better seek and discern God’s voice when facing certain decisions and circumstances.

In case you aren’t sure, God does want you to seek Him, depend on Him and be able to discern His will for all parts of your life.   Learning to discern God’s voice, however, takes some practice.   It’s not as difficult as we might think, and there are ways to determine whether what we are being led to is truly of God.  Rick Warren describes 7 ways to test an impression or discern God’s voice. Today we discuss those as well as some other tidbits about how to discern and decipher God’s voice in our lives and leadership.

I hope this episode blesses you and that you will continue to join me on this journey toward balance, peace, and freedom to live the abundant life you were called to.

25. ✝️Grace and Faith Friday: What Does God Say about Leadership?21 Apr 202300:07:00

Happy Friday my Faithful Friends!

With the ever-changing work culture we find ourselves in, leadership can be very challenging.  I think it is especially difficult when you tend to care too much, if there is such a thing.   But I also believe that God calls certain people to lead.  Like much else, he does not promise it will be unicorns and rainbows.  Rarely is Kingdom work the easiest kind of work, and true leadership….the kind someone is called to, is and should be Kingdom work if done according to God’s will and when giving glory to Him.

Tune in to hear what the bible has to say to the leader who seeks to do the good work of God but grows weary….

Episode #24 Letter from a Leader Who Cares Too Much

24. 💌Letter From a Leader Who Cares Too Much17 Apr 202300:10:26

Hey, Friend!

Today’s episode might be a little controversial or sensitive, I don’t know, but I felt God calling me to speak on behalf of some of the leaders out there who tend to care so much about their role and their team, yet it never seems like enough and they are on the verge of throwing in the towel.

I am talking today from the perspective of a leader who cares too much, but feels a bit invisible.  She is a conglomerate of many leaders I have seen or heard from who have been so committed to their teams and to their role, yet their efforts often go unnoticed. They are nearing their breaking point in a work environment and work culture that has changed so significantly.

This is far different than most episodes, so thank you for your willingness to listen.  This is not intended to reflect any specific individual…I have taken some creative liberties, if you will.  It is written as a letter from a leader to a team member who is actively engaged, a team member who is present but complacent, and a team member that is actively disengaged.

I would love to know if if this resonates a little with any of my listeners.  Please leave me a voice or written message at gracefilledleader.com/contact and let me know your thoughts.

23. ✝️Grace and Faith Friday: Pleasing God, Not People.14 Apr 202300:07:41

Happy Friday my Faithful Friends!

By now most of you have heard me share my own personal struggles with people pleasing and approval seeking.  It has manifested itself in so many ways throughout my life, as far back as I can remember and in ways we haven’t yet talked about.  It wasn’t until I was just exhausted and somewhat crushed under the weight of it that I began to find my way out.  And that only came through surrender and the realization that I needed to turn my eyes to the Lord.  The bible very clearly tells us that we ought not seek the approval of man above God.

So, what does the bible say about people-pleasing?  Tune in to find out!

22. People Pleasing: What Are the Consequences as a Christian Woman?10 Apr 202300:17:55

Today we are continuing our discussion around people pleasing.  Last week we talked about some of the roots of people-pleasing.  And I think most of us who struggle with it think we are just being good people.  We say “yes” to things because we want to be helpful and we want to be liked.   However, there are some real consequences to being a people pleaser.

Beyond the obvious physical, emotional, and mental impacts of long-term people-pleasing, I am not sure we stop to think of the bigger picture….  the less obvious consequences of being a chronic people-pleaser.  We like to think it just means we are being a nice person who serves others.

The problem is, people-pleasing only wins us very temporary and superficial peace.  When we continually adapt our beliefs, messaging, and choices to gain the approval of others, no one will truly know who we are.  We may actually lose track of who we are.  More importantly, no one will know WHOSE we are.   In truth, people-pleasing may be a strong indicator that we may not TRULY know WHOSE we are….  We may not be walking in a true heart knowledge of who we are in Christ.    When we are truly walking in that knowledge, we are set free to experience something far more fulfilling than the superficial approval of man.

I hope this episode blesses you and that you will continue to join me on this journey toward balance, peace, and freedom to live the abundant life you were called to.

142. Feeling Like a Human Fire Extinguisher?🧯 3 Tips for Frontline Leaders.12 Jun 202400:14:26

Today we talk about what it means when I talk about frontline leaders, why it is such an appropriate term for the manager and supervisor level of leadership, and 3 Tips to feel less like a human fire-extinguisher.

The frontline has the most direct impact on the work at hand.  They are the workers, the soldiers, the ones getting their hands dirty, so to speak.  Frontline workers are the core of every organization.

Frontline leaders are the ones who directly supervise those frontline workers.  They are the closest to the work when it comes to leadership (or they certainly should be).   I think frontline leadership is so appropriately named because these are the leaders taking the bullets from all directions.

I am going to go out on a limb and make a few suggestions and observations from my years of managing and now leading frontline managers and supervisors.  Much of my learning has come from mistakes and trial and error.   Perhaps I can help you learn from my mistakes.

Tune in to hear more!

Key Highlights:

  • What is frontline leadership
  • The challenges of frontline leadership
  • 3 tips for frontline leaders

21. People Pleasing...Where Does It Come From?! 🤔03 Apr 202300:16:08

I know not all of my listeners fit this bill, but many women in leadership that I meet and speak to, and many women in general have some tendencies toward people pleasing or approval seeking.  In some ways, it got us to where we are because we are typically very dependable and hard-working.   However, it is not an especially healthy way of living life or leading…   I consider myself a recovering people-pleaser.  Notice I say recovering not recovered. I think I will forever fight the thought distortions that lead me toward people-pleasing, but I have also come to learn how costly a life spent people-pleasing can be.

I have been studying myself, and others and researching the origins of people pleasing and approval seeking.  We all have different stories and ultimately different seeds planted that grow into patterns of approval-seeking.  But there are some pretty common and universal traits of people-pleasers.

Today we are talking about some of the common motivators.  Have a listen and see what resonates with you.

I hope this episode blesses you and that you will continue to join me on this journey toward balance, peace, and freedom to live the abundant life you were called to.

20. 10 Qualities of a Great Leader 🏆27 Mar 202300:19:38

Happy Monday, Friends!

Today we are back to talking about what it means to be a great leader.  This is going to sound kind of weird, but today’s episode was inspired by a whistle .  Yep, that’s right…a whistle…you know, the kind your gym teacher or sports coach wore around their neck as they had you running killers up and down the court at practice…  I am sure you are thinking, what the heck does that have to do with a podcast about leadership?!

I was thinking about a leadership academy that I am going to be co-facilitating, and one of the icebreaker activities requires me to bring an object that represents my leadership or my idea of effective leadership.   I had a few thoughts but hadn’t really settled on anything.  Well, this morning I was going through our multipurpose drawer…aka junk drawer…and I saw a whistle on a lanyard.  I knew immediately that would be the object I chose to bring to our first session of the leadership academy, and this is why.

When I saw that whistle, I thought of a sports coach.  I then started to think about how much a great coach on the sports field has in common with an effective leader in the workplace.   The goal and the role of the coach should be much the same as that of a team leader in the workplace.  Tune in as we dive a little deeper into the 10 Qualities of a great sports coach (and a great leader).

I hope this episode blesses you and that you will continue to join me on this journey toward balance, peace, and freedom to live the abundant life you were called to.

19. ⌛Time Management Series: 4 Essential Components of Effective Time Management20 Mar 202300:18:23

Hey, friend!

If you have been listening the last several weeks, we have been talking about time management.  Today is Part 4 in our Time Management series and we are going to get a lot more tactical this time.  We are talking about the 4 Essential components of effective time management, and what a difference they can make in your ability to be productive and present at work and at home.  You are definitely going to want to grab a notebook and pen for this one, folks!

I thought I was someone that was fairly good at managing my time, but I have discovered that I was not very good at all.  It wasn’t until I really began to inventory my time, identify the waste, and develop systems to plan my weeks that I discovered what a disaster I had been for most of my adult life.   When I look back at all of the years I spent far too many hours at work and was never able to keep up at home, I realized that I didn’t have much of a system that would set me up for success.   I am learning how very important systems are when it comes to being efficient and productive.

I hope this episode blesses you and that you will continue to join me on this journey toward balance, peace, and freedom to live the abundant life you were called to.
