| EP.215 McMahons The Design Brief - Justin Trott (Programmed Turnpoint) | 27 oct. 2026 | 02:17:37 | |
The Design Brief segment of The Golfing Greenkeeper Podcast is proudly brought to you by McMahons. Check out their website to get a better understanding of their suite of services and outstanding portfolio of golf course construction and other sports turf work at www.mcmahons.net.au Justin Trott is a name you may not be familiar with. But after this podcast episode you may well be asking, how did I not know?! Justin grew up in a small regional township just outside Melbourne and was keen golfer. It was a very good round of golf and chance meeting with Ross Perrett as a kid that set a path for Justin's future to becoming a golf course architect. That chance meeting soon gave way to Justin doing work experience with Ross which then would see Justin's career begin at the same time as the boom of golf in Australia during the late 80's and early 90's working ultimately in the design house of the well known Thomson Wolveridge Perrett of the time. Fast forward to today after being involved with numerous projects in many different capacities such as The National Golf Club, Moonah Links, Hamilton Island Golf Club, Cape Wickham, and most recently, The Cliffs Kangaroo Island, and Justin has now amassed a long, established, and fruitful career as a golf course architect, often without public recognition. Join me on this incredible journey as Justin takes us through some of his biggest career moments, including a few stories about the late Peter Thomson, and a look into the future of golf course architecture in Australia as President of the Society of Australian Golf Course Architects. Find your nearest John Deere dealer at deere.com.au Richard Flesser is the superintendent of the Jack Nicklaus signature designed Lakelands Golf Club on the Gold Coast in Queensland. He might be leading the team maintaining this well known course right now, but his career began far from the highs of such a facility. Growing up as a Gold Coast boy, Richard wasn't one of those kids who was always chasing golf. Whilst he began mowing lawns at an early age, his father was a butcher by trade, and Richard went about earning money trying his hand at a number of different jobs. When he did get an opportunity to work on a golf course, it wasn't the glamourous well known tracks of the Gold Coast we hear about today, but it was a start nevertheless! From here he would go on to help build a number of the most well known golf courses of the Gold Coast through the boom years of golf in the 1990's before settling into a career greenkeeping groove at Royal Pines and then Lakelands Golf Club itself. Join Richard and I as he takes us on a nostalgic trip through the years of golf on the Gold Coast and hearing about the rise in his career along with the rise of golf on the Gold Coast, learning and experiencing some of the highest level of maintenance and presentation of any golf course working under some of the country's best greenkeepers. Phil and I talk about the lineage of the Ferrier family beginning with the well known Jim Ferrier, past golf professional of Manly Golf Club, and we go backwards from there. The main reason behind this podcast is some new information that has recently been found in China and shared amongst golf historians of the understanding of how Jim Ferrier from Manly Golf Club is related to John Ferrier, a founding member of Carnoustie Golf Club, and there's a new part of the story of designing the first golf course in China. The Design Brief segment of The Golfing Greenkeeper Podcast is proudly brought to you by McMahons. Check out their website to get a better understanding of their suite of services and outstanding portfolio of work at www.mcmahons.net.au In his own words Harley Kruse wasn't drawing golf holes dreaming about designing golf courses when he was at school. He became a landscape architect and through working in his early career with Ross Perrett he was soon working on golf projects from a landscape architecture perspective. It wasn't until Ross Perrett teamed up with the late golfing great Peter Thomson and late Michael Wolveridge, which created the golf course design firm Thomson Wolveridge Perrett, that his career would soon turn much more to designing golf courses. Harley Kruse today is an incredibly experienced golf course architect working early on with Thomson Wolveridge Perrett before moving over to Greg Norman Golf Course Design and leading their team in Asia. Following a decline in the Asian golf market, Harley went out to work on his own and started Kruse Golf, but you'll quickly hear that he remained working collaboratively with peers of the architecture industry which he continues to do today. From designing the Norman course at Mission Hills in China, and Danang Dunes in Vietnam, to Settlers Run in Melbourne and more recently remodeling Royal Perth Golf Club with peers Clayton DeVries & Pont, there's a lot packed into this episode. Join Harley and I as we sit down to discuss his extensive golf course architecture career along with a couple of other design questions, in the wonderful Elanora Country Club clubhouse with the magnificent views to the Pacific Ocean! Upon becoming a qualified greenkeeper Harry began looking abroad to gain more experience in the industry which would lead him to the Home of Golf - St Andrews! In fact, he is probably one of very few that have gone from maintaining horse racecourses over to maintaining golf courses. Yes, from the outset, and unbeknownst to me, Brenden's greenkeeping career is rather different to most I've had the pleasure of chatting with on the podcast in the past. And from that difference comes many different rabbit holes. We also get to learn about the Manly golf course and what makes it such a unique and interesting site to maintain on top of being a highly regarded and historic golf course. Our conversation also takes in topics such as leadership, people management, team culture, professional development, personal growth, and the often less discussed topic of mental health. The Design Brief segment of The Golfing Greenkeeper Podcast is proudly brought to you by McMahons. From submitting design work to a golf course architecture competition, to working at Royal Melbourne Golf Club, Michael wanted in on the golf architecture world and nothing was going to stop him. He gained a couple of different opportunities over time working with a couple of well known firms, including shaping on site helping to build the well known and now famous Tara Iti in New Zealand. Fast forward to today and Michael is now a member of the Society of Australian Golf Course architects having completed his own work to redesign an amazing transformation of Mallacoota Golf Club after the devastating 2019 bushfires, along with recent work at Flinders Golf Club on Victoria's Mornington Peninsula. Growing up, helping around the course with his Dad, and playing golf meant Keenan only ever really had eyes on golf in his future. When Keenan finished school he got offered an apprenticeship but it wasn't local to home. No, it was in Adelaide city, far away from the country life he grew up in. It was time to head to the big smoke and take on all that would lay before him. He learnt from some of the best in the industry and one of the best golf clubs in Adelaide and here he would spend 9 years in total before things needed a change. Jumping to today, Keenan is Golf Course Superintendent himself and leads a small, young, energetic team of greenkeepers that maintain the course at Flagstaff Hill Golf Club in the hills to the south east of the city. A golf course in a unique landscape that is moving forward in leaps and bounds recently with a new clubhouse, some course improvements, and the addition of a mini golf course, there's plenty to learn experience and enjoy at Flagstaff Hills GC To fill in the gaps, hear about preparing for a few Australian Women's Opens, and learn about a golf course you may have never heard about before, grab yourself a Warragamba Slammer (or preferred drink of choice) to stay hydrated as I take you into a lesser known South Australian golf course! Jared has been leading the charge to save Moore Park Golf Course under its current arrangement of 18 holes. With the looming deadline of July 1st getting ever closer when the NSW state government announced they will begin carving up half of the golf course, I felt it appropriate and timely to get an inside update on the current state of affairs and if there's any change to the governments decision to reduce Australia's busiest 18 hole golf course down to 9. There's also other news including the commencement of the redevelopment of the public North Adelaide Golf Course by the SA state government (in high contrast to that of the NSW state government), Mandurah Country Club in WA is beginning the upgrade of their entire golf course irrigation system, Gisborne Golf Club in Victoria opens their brand new clubhouse, Bondi Diggers GC in Sydney is forced to shut down their 2nd hole, Garfield Golf Club have rebuilt their 11th and 15th tees, and Port Fairy Golf Links has a new Superintendent in town. Rob continues this tradition at the club, pushing the boundaries of turf maintenance in an effort to provide better turf and have less impact on the environment. Rob's story however began in another country, that of New Zealand and its largest city, Auckland. | EP.176 Aussie Golf History - Kingston Heath Golf Club's 15th Hole | 23 mars 2026 | 00:16:42 | |
This is a new shortened version of Aussie Golf History in an effort to bring more interesting historical information that I come across in my regular searches through history. This segment I quote to you an article from 22nd April 1925 written by Royal Melbourne Golf Club Professional at the time, Arthur Le Fevre. Arthur gives his insight and opinion of the new design and playability of the new course of Kingston Heath Golf Club, in particular the possibility of shortening the 15th hole from a blind short par 4 to a par 3. A point of note is that this observation and idea was some 18 months before Dr Alister MacKenzie graced the shores of Australia and completed a bunkering scheme for Kingston Heath and is credited with creating the par 3, 15th hole we see today. Find your nearest John Deere dealer at deere.com.au Jake Gibbs is not an Australian by birth and his journey to where he is today is quite a story! Jake hails from the United Kingdom where he actually began his greenkeeping career. Following the footsteps of his father, Jake wanted to travel parts of the world as a young adult and it was on this path that he set his sights on the east coast of Australia for a backpacking holiday! After a number of months travelling and working a few jobs in Australia, a lack of funds in his back pocket, his greenkeeping experience under his belt, and the want to stay in Australia a little longer, Jake had one last roll of the dice for work. He wrote to a number of superintendents at some of Sydney's leading golf courses. And it was from here that his time in Australia was about to change significantly with a greenkeeping job at Elanora Country Club. Jake's passion and hard work at greenkeeping would soon set him on a great career path. Fast forward through climbing the career ladder working at a number of the best golf clubs in Sydney and Canberra, including one Australian Open, Jake would eventually come full circle in 2021 where he would take on the role as Director of Grounds back at Elanora Country Club. Jake's story is full of passion, enjoyment, hard work, family, and always following his own north star, to continue to strive for excellence wherever he works. Through his story you will hear about what goes into delivering some of the best golf courses in Sydney and Canberra and there are also a number of people that Jake has worked with that have become superintendents in their own right. My chat with Tom is soon after he and his team prepared the course for the NZ PGA and what a wonderful example of a tournament golf course it was. Tom comes from humble beginnings growing up in the Lower Hutt region of Wellington. It was here that he decided greenkeeping was what he wanted to do and left school early, to the surprise of his school mates, to begin his career. Learning his early craft at a parkland course, it was upon completion of his apprenticeship that soon would see him take the opportunity to begin his employment as a qualified greenkeeper at Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club to the north of Wellington working under and being mentored by one of the best superintendents in this part of the world! I'm not gong to give anymore away of this awesome chat with Tom other than to say his meteoric rise to becoming superintendent of a highly regarded golf club in New Zealand is far from by chance or accident, so dive in with us as we go through Tom's career and learn some insight about Paraparaumu Beach GC along the way.
