2024 Dungeon Master's Guide: A Complete and Total Review | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast18 Nov 202401:33:48

Good gravy we spent so much time recording this episode and the Deep Dives -- 3.5 hours of content from one recording session. But there was a lot to talk about. In this main-feed release of The Goblins and Growlers Podcast, Brandon, Inver, and Josh debate what works, what doesn't, and what's lacking from the new 2024 release of The Dungeon Master's Guide.

There are things to like here and it's evident that Wizards of the Coast has paid attention to how the D&D community has developed over the last 10 years and incorporated that into these updated rules. Could they have gone further? Sure. Could they have gone into more detail? Definitely. Is it a useless book? Not at all. Just make sure you're the intended audience.

Check out the GGP Deep Dive episodes (on the $5 tier) connected with this one -- the first one on the new Bastion rules is out this week and another going through the campaign creation chapter is coming next Monday. Don't miss 'em.

Writing a very specific kind of D&D game | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast04 Nov 202401:10:52

Writing a very specific kind of game.

Early access and bonus content on Patreon Subscribe to our monthly gaming newsletter Join the Discord

Writing is hard. Josh and Brandon discuss the very specific kind of writing you have to do for a public/pick-up D&D game. It's a lot different than writing for a home game, but should it be? Obviously, folks should do what works best for them and their players, but there's definitely value in examining how you write for your home game.

In this week's Patreon-exclusive GGP Deep Dive, they get into creative motivations and trouble that is getting from "I want to write this" to "I'm writing this."

Vecna! Vecna! Read All About It | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast10 Jun 202401:09:02

Josh takes a look at the new Vecna book from Wizards of the Coast. It's been hyped a bunch and is the marquee release of the year (unless you care a whole whole lot about the revised Core Rules). One of the top contenders for the name of today's episode was "Quantum Leap Fetch Quest."

Do you dig on full campaign books? Do you actually get through them, do you buy them for shelf decoration or completionism, or do you cherry pick little things from the campaigns for your own homebrew?

WotC Nixes A La Carte Buying on D&D Beyond and Other News | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast13 May 202401:05:55

A bit of a news breakdown today. Wizards of the Coast is surprisingly adding the new Core Rulebooks's updated SRD to Creative Commons. But then they juke in another direction and make some unpopular changes to D&D Beyond! Kobold Press issues has some things to say about the reception of their Black Flag Reference Document, and Josh compares *just how similar* it is to D&D's 5.1 SRD (spoilers: a lot).

Castle of the Winds and The Wild West of Win 3.1 Gaming | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast29 Apr 202401:05:13

It's simple this week: We play Castle of the Winds and talk about it. The game holds a special place in Josh's personal gaming history.

Castle of the Winds is a PC RPG/Roguelike from the Windows 3.1 era, which is a weird time for games. We get into this in the episode but, basically, Win 3.1 was very much primarily a business application and its native games were like a square peg in a round hole. All the good games were on DOS anyway.

Heckna! Heckna! Read All About It! | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast15 Apr 202401:05:52

Join the Revalia with "Heckna!" from Hit Point Press. This is a campaign setting that seems to take a little bit from Final Fantasy 6 and a little bit from Ravenloft. It's described as a sandbox setting, but there are a couple of arguments as to why it might not be. It's 300 pages, incredibly well done, and professional... which you'd expect from a Kickstarter that raised more than $600,000!

If you decide to pick up a copy, be sure to let us know what you think and whether we're totally off-base in our assessment.

Hasbro CEO: Let's Use AI in Dungeons & Dragons | The Goblins and Growlers Podacast01 Apr 202401:02:32

The CEO of Dungeons & Dragons' parent company, Chris Cocks, gave an interview where he talked about AI and Hasbro's research and development into how to apply it to Dungeons & Dragons. It's an interesting interview (link below the jump) that more or less spells out that they're likely to use it for some kind of virtual DM - but that's still just speculation. We discuss the likeliest manifestation of something like that and how they could make it work while respecting the work of human writers and gamemasters.

Also, we do a quick preview of the new "Quests from the Infinite Staircase" and mention a Humble Bundle for tons of great RGP books from Magpie Games!

Finally, if you're listening to this on Monday, April 1, tomorrow is the last day of the Kickstarter for "Born from Ice." Help them hit that Neanderthal stretch goal! They're so close. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/lorenthegm/born-from-ice-stone-age-role-playing-5e?ref=c6djgl&token=7da324ce

NASA releases a fantasy TTRPG adventure? | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast18 Mar 202401:05:58

This week, we're looking at the new (free) system-neutral TTRPG adventure that NASA wrote and released to keep everyone hyped about Hubble. It's designed to be educational, but does its fantasy setting muddy that goal a little? Also, Josh updates us on the Vecna adventure coming out soon, and we respond to the longest YouTube comment I've ever seen!

"Born from Ice" Creator Interview: Stone-Age D&D | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast04 Mar 202401:33:48

Today we talk with Loren Small, the creator of "Born from Ice," a 5E-compatible setting with a few twists. It’s a complete tabletop setting that’s built on Fifth Edition but takes place on Paleolithic Earth. All cavepeople, all the time. Oh, and I should probably mention that there’s no magic, so everything is harder. It has some other cool aspects like generational play. BFI’s Kickstarter launches Tuesday, March 5 and you can check it out here (once it’s live). It’s coming with a core rule book, a bestiary, and an adventure path. I was excited about it even before talking with Loren, so it was great to hear how BFI came to be and learn about Loren's path to creating it.

Help! My Game Is on Fire! GM and Player Advice Live Show | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast19 Feb 202401:14:11

Good Goblin Monday! Today's episode is from a recent Twitch stream that we did. We did a live online version of our "Help! My Game Is on Fire!" convention panel where GMs and players bring their tabletop problems to us and we offer advice on how to navigate them. These can be anything from handling bad fits at the table to untying narrative knots. It's always a blast and the experience is different every time. Hope you all enjoy! We want to plan more of these live-on-Twitch recordings for topics that lend themselves, so let us know what you'd like to see!

Deck of Many Things Review | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast05 Feb 202400:59:34

Good Goblin Monday! This week, we take a look at the (spoilers) fantastic "Deck of Many Things" after its delayed release thanks to production issues. We also talk about the Tales of the Valiant Game Master's Guide and this new D&D virtual reality game that seems to be in development. Deets after the jump.

Also, on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at 8 p.m. EST, Josh and Brandon will be doing a live recording of the podcast over on our Twitch channel. We hope you can join us for the first podcast edition of our popular convention panel, "Help! My Game is on Fire!" where players and GMs can ask for advice about how to deal with touchy issues in their games. Hope to see you there!

Is this the END of a tabletop GOLDEN AGE? (Someone thinks so) | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast22 Jan 202401:25:52

Good Goblin Monday, everyone. This week, we're analyzing an essay that claims we're at the end of "The Golden Age of Tabletop Roleplaying Games." As you might expect, the writer is using the 2023 OGL Crisis as the jumping-off point for their argument, so this should be coming right after our "D&D is Stronger than Ever" episode. The essay has all the hallmarks of a hyperbolic reaction that blows things out of proportion, but some nuggets of truth in there are hard to disagree with. Full topics breakdown below the jump, along with a couple of other brief topics we hit at the top of the episode.

Have a great one and don't forget to join the Discord, sign up for the newsletter, and subscribe to the YouTube channel.

Magic The Gathering: AI Promotional Art

Is this the end of The Golden Age of TTRPGs? The article discusses the perceived end of the golden age of tabletop roleplaying games (TTRPGs) that began around the start of the 2010s.

  • Link to the Essay: https://www.facebook.com/777800284/posts/10168399913785285/?mibextid=K8Wfd2
  • Rise in Popularity: The rise of TTRPGs was fueled by factors like the popularity of Stranger Things and actual plays like Critical Role, bringing in a significant number of new players.
  • Fracturing Community: The emergence of new TTRPGs is seen as a potential shattering of the community, with players now being asked to choose sides between different systems, leading to division and balkanization.
  • Historical Comparison: The article draws a parallel to the 1990s when TSR, the first publisher of Dungeons & Dragons, faced challenges as the TTRPG audience became fans of specific settings rather than the overall game.
  • Diversity in Games: During this golden age, there was a diverse range of TTRPGs, including D&D 5E dominating the D20 fantasy family, other OGL games, and a flourishing indie scene with games redefining what a TTRPG is, like Apocalypse World.
  • Challenges for New Games: The article argues that despite the potential quality of new TTRPGs, the business is challenging, and the recent changes, including the end of the OGL, may make it even more difficult for companies to succeed.
  • Impact on Content Creators: The author speculates on the impact of the changes on content creators and platforms like MCDM and Critical Role, suggesting potential shifts in focus and potential declines in support for D&D.
  • Predictions for the Future: The article concludes with predictions about the future, including the expectation that 6th edition D&D may not perform as well as its predecessor, potential challenges for crowdfunding campaigns, and a decline in the overall excitement and diversity of TTRPGs unless significant changes occur.
  • Argues that MCDM will be the “Last Big Crowdfunded TTRPG.

Handy gaming tools: A useful DMG?

We collected a bunch of news about the upcoming 2024 Dungeon Masters' Guide release. Word on the street is that this version of the DMG is going to be a much more useful tool than previous iterations from editions past. We talk about the return of Greyhawk, adventure-writing coaching, and bastions/strongholds. Honestly, if this version of the DMG is even half as useful as it seems, this is a huge win for both new and experienced GMs.

OGL One Year Later: Is D&D Stronger Than Ever Now?08 Jan 202401:12:53

Josh was under the weather, so we were lucky enough to snag Noted TTRPG Attorney Noah Downs, Esq., to come and talk about and offer his on-the-ground perspective about the tumultuous last 12 months in Dungeons & Dragons and the tabletop gaming space overall. Do you think Wizards of the Coast/Hasbro has recovered from the PR nightmare that was the Open Gaming License controversy? I'd argue that even with last month's layoffs, D&D is far stronger now and better positioned to thrive than it was this time last year. Check below for all the topics we discussed.

  • The OGL Controversy One Year Later
    • Despite the body blow to the company, is Wizards of the Coast actually *better off* now than they were a year ago?
  • WotC juking everyone with Creative Commons
    • D&D's 5.1 SRD going into Creative Commons wasn't at the top of anyone's list of probabilities when everything with OGL started.
  • Third Parties’ Plans Foiled
    • Third-party publishers clearly planned for a different outcome when they started announcing their upcoming D&D alternatives. But, once WotC went with Creative Commons, it seems like they scrambled to still move forward without losing face even though their original motivation was less and less relevant.
  • One D&D (Can we even call it that anymore)?
    • Call it One D&D, call it 6.0. Whatever it is, it's coming, and it remains to be seen if it's going to be "iterative" like was originally announced or an entirely new ruleset. You would think that releasing the 5.1 SRD into Creative Commons would incentivize them to release a whole new ruleset.
  • Wasn’t there a D&D movie?
    • Yes, and it bombed. We talk about why.
  • WotC’s Book Price Bloat
    • Sure there's inflation and things generally cost more, but what extra value are you getting for the additional cost of these books?
  • Planescape returns… is it worth it?
    • Rerelease, remix, or return to get your money back? Does the new 5E Planescape justify its existence?
  • Ernie Gygax and Justin La Nasa’s NuTSR files Chapter 7

    • What's the deal with that D&D free ad-supported television channel? Who asked for this? More importantly, who's paying for it?

    • AI has 100% affected every corner of content creation in the last year and WotC wasn't safe, either. We talk about the real AI art scandal and the smaller, made-up one that came at the end of the year.

Despite being the Atlas supporting the world that is Hasbro, layoffs also came to Wizards of the Coast this month, affecting well-known names such as Dan Dillon and Mike Mearls. Was this an instance of sharing the pain in a demonstration of "fairness" by the parent corporation? Also, is that new free-ad-supported Dungeons & Dragons channel part of Hasbro's Entertainment division? If so, then maybe don't get too attached to it.

Somewhat related to the layoffs, there's also some new kerfuffle over the use of AI art, but it seems like it could just be a misunderstanding from some folks on the Internet.

Finally, we chat about "Tales of the Valiant," nee "Project Black Flag." When Kobold Press announced this new roleplaying system, it was before Wizards of the Coast juked everyone and irrevocably placed the Fifth Edition System Reference Document into Creative Commons. Now that the core of 5E is protected like that, is there really a need for what Kobold Press' own people have called 5E with "a fresh coat of paint." Ultimately, what's their differentiator? What's their argument for us to purchase a new set of books with largely the same rules we already have? We dig into detail on all these during this episode of “The Goblins and Growlers Podcast.”

Does D&D’s 2024 Release Slate Excite You? | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast11 Dec 202301:08:48
On Today's Goblins and Growlers Podcast

We’d planned today to talk about Kobold Press’ “Tales of the Valiant"/Project Black Flag, but had to change things up a bit. Brandon and a few of the other Goblins were at PAX Unplugged the weekend before last when Wizards of the Coast announced the 2024 lineup of Dungeons & Dragons books. So, much like last year, we decided to dive into the list a little bit to see if anything excited us. It's an interesting slate, but also very different from what came out in 2023.

The 2024 D&D releases
  • Descent into the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth, an update of a First Edition module.
  • Vecna: Eve of Ruin, featuring, obviously, the lich-god Vecna. Supposedly, this is some kind of tour of the D&D Multiverse.
  • The 2024 Player’s Handbook, part of the rules update formerly known as One D&D.
  • The Making of Original Dungeons and Dragons: 1970-1976, a collection of letters between D&D creators Gary Gygax and Dave Arneson along with images and scans from the original books with edits and footnotes. These letters have never been released to the public before.
  • Quests from the Infinite Staircase, an anthology collection of adventures.

We dig into detail on all these, including the potentially leaked and possibly incorrect release dates for them, during this episode of “The Goblins and Growlers Podcast.”

Also, here's an embarrassing picture of Brandon from PAX:

The Machine: An Actual Play of a Haunting Indie Journaling Game | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast30 Oct 202301:14:07
And now for something completely different. For our Halloween-week release, The Goblins and Growlers Players present the haunting tale of... The Machine! "The Machine" is "A serial journal roleplaying game for as many players as you wish by Adira Slattery and Fen Slattery. Gameplay happens across days, weeks, or even months. Only one person plays this game at a time, but many people play it in sequence." It's great fun and you should check it out. It's kind of like a hyper-detailed version of play-by-post RPGs. Over a couple of weeks, several of us wrote and recorded journal entries detailing many attempts to create an unknowable device with an inscrutable purpose. Here's a description of the game from its itch.io page that really captures the ambiance:

The curse snuck up on you, and now you can’t escape. You’re not sure how or when it began, but every waking moment, you feel the machine call to you.

Behind its words are music, beckoning you to build. The impossible notes echo in your mind, and you know what you must do. You can see it now, this manifold instrument.

You will complete this infernal machine or die trying.

We hope you all enjoy this sort-of-play. We'll do more of these if you all like them, so please let us know! Special thanks to Liz, Luke, Ollie, and Scott. Double thanks to Scott for all the production work he put into this.

We'll see you all next episode for Unpopular Opinions about Dungeons & Dragons.

Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk Review -- Is It Half a Book? | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast16 Oct 202300:59:44

This week we take a look at Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk. It's The Lost Mines of Phandelver plus, essentially, an extra adventure. Is this a full adventure or just half of one since the first part of it (more or less) was released as part of the original Starter Set? And how does that look coming right after Wizards of the Coast raised the price of the physical Dungeons & Dragons books? Join our Discord below and let us know what you think.

Glory of the Giants Review | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast02 Oct 202301:14:37

A mere 2 weeks and change after its release, the GGP boys are talking about Bigby's Glory of the Giants.

Topics include but are not limited to:

  • What's in the book?
  • Is the $60 price tag justified?
  • The AI art debacle that occurred shortly before release.
  • AI in general.
  • Having book content call on another (non-standard) book's content.
  • And more!

Scratching Our Indie Game Itch(.io) AGAIN | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast18 Sep 202300:49:33

We all get tired of D&D (or Pathfinder or Other Gaming Systems Are Available) eventually, so this week we're touching base on some cool indie games available (mostly) on itch.io. It's a mix of high-concept, interpretations of other systems, and tossed salad and scrambled eggs. We'll be callin' again in two weeks with scrambled eggs all over our face.

Chuck E. Cheese Robots | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast04 Sep 202301:22:42

At the recent Queen City Anime Con, we were fortunate enough to meet Ash (they/them) who, by pure coincidence, happened to be as big a fan of animatronic children's entertainment pizza robots as Brandon. It was too good of an opportunity to pass up, so we got them on the podcast to chat about Nolan Bushnell, Pizza Time Theatre, Showbiz Pizza, Rock-a-Fire Explosion, and Charles Entertainment Cheese.

Not a typical episode, but we had fun.

With Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks basically tripling down on his commitment to the use of some form of AI in Dungeons & Dragons, we talked through what that might look like. Is there even a path for the responsible use of AI in TTRPG gaming, or is it an already slippery slope that they're coating with butter, oil, and other lubricants?

Choose Your Own Adventure | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast21 Aug 202300:57:52

Gather round and I'll tell you a story from long ago. Way back in the 1970s and 80s, if you wanted an interactive game that didn't require other people, you were basically out of luck. Fortunately, there was an option for those of us whiling away our elementary school days: The Choose Your Own Adventure books. These books had stories with branching paths that sometimes went is *extremely* weird directions. Josh and I snagged some CYOA books and had fun channeling our childhood selves with "Blood Island," "Surf Monkeys," and "The Unicorn and the Warlock." These stories took bizarre, abrupt turns that some times left us wondering "wait, is this for kids?"

Also, I talk a little about the "Star Trek Adventures: Captain's Log" solo play RPG I picked up the other day.

Andrew Kolb’s ”Oz” and ”Neverland” 5e Settings | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast07 Aug 202301:01:58

This week, we divided and conquered to cover a couple of excellent 5e-compatible setting books from writer and illustrator Andrew Kolb. Josh decided there was no place like Kolb's "Oz" setting, while Brandon refused to grow up and talked about "Neverland." They have lore, unique stat blocks, maps, and tables - oh so many tables.

I would have liked to write more for these show notes, but I have to finish writing a paper for school and get ready to head to Queen City Anime Con later in the week! We'll catch you when we get back from Charlotte - second Interstate off-ramp to the right and straight on 'til morning.

Questing for Glory with Jason Michal | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast25 Jul 202301:20:16

You'll hear on the intro why we had to pull this one out, but this is an interview we've been holding back for a while in case of a rainy day. That day has come. A good while back, Brandon interviewed Jason Michal, author of the upcoming "Questing for Glory," about his book. It's the definitive history of the "Quest for Glory" computer game series from the 90s which he's writing in collaboration with Lori and Cory Cole, the creators of "Quest for Glory." While the book hasn't come out yet, it's chugging along and we're still looking forward to it. Be sure to check out the official Twitter at https://twitter.com/qfgbook.

And check out the most recent status tweet to get an idea where it is in the production cycle: https://twitter.com/qfgbook/status/1665536807528800256

I (Brandon) absolutely loved the "Quest for Glory" series and it was one of my gateways into D&D. The games are on gog.com ($10 for all five of them!), so check them out if you missed them back then or were just born too late for point-and-click adventure games.

Pathfinder Drops Drow, and Other News | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast12 Jun 202301:03:04

I'll share something with you all. The edit on this episode has been done for a couple of days but it's only now, late on Sunday night, that I'm finally uploading it, scheduling it, and writing the show notes. I'd love to be able to translate this into a personal lesson on time management, but I truly believe we'll find ourselves in this scenario again in two weeks. ANYWAY.

In this week's episode, we discuss the further OGL fallout of Pathfinder eliminating the Drow from its lore, the upcoming Fifth Edition Planescape box set, Troika's new "Longshot City" superhero source book, and a fun lil' space exploration game called "Solar Crawl."

As always, telephone, telegraph, tell a friend about The Goblins and Growlers Podcast.

WotC Casts ”Enlarge” on D&D Book Prices | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast29 May 202301:16:20

It's a news roundup this week. Fresh off the heels of sending Pinkertons to hassle someone with pre-release Magic cards, Wizards of the Coast is upping the price of their D&D books! Fortunately, though, Kobold Press' "Tales of the Valiant" Kickstarter launched and it's already clocking in at more than $750,000, so you'll have options if you want to play some mainstream TTRPGs even if you bail on D&D. Also, there's going to be a 24-hour ad-supported D&D streaming service; I thought we already had one called Twitch.

Also, we talk about Robotron and, bizarrely, Bibleman and his connection to D&D.

Finally, from now through June 3, any purchase on our online store will have 30% of its proceeds donated to Richmond Mutual Aid Disaster Relief's free community market.

Nations & Cannons, a *Revolutionary* 5E Setting | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast15 May 202301:23:08

This week we had the treat of an interview with Collyn Messier, the lead rules designer for Nations & Cannons, a new Revolutionary War setting for Fifth Edition. Because of a comedy of errors, it took about five months to schedule this interview and, unfortunately, we weren't able to publish it until just *after* their (highly successful) Kickstarter ended -- but the upside is that you can still pre-order!

Nations & Cannons is a fun spin on regular 5E rules to adapt them to 18th-Century America. It's 99.999999% historical and is even being used as a teaching tool in some schools, but Collyn tells us to keep an eye out for "Benjamin Franklin, Banshee Hunter" as a module in the (not too distant) future.

Name: Collyn Messier  Pronouns: They/Them Role: Lead Rules Developer Brief description of your project and what’s unique about it:  Your dad(s) and "dad-minded" family/friends will love this historical TTRPG! Nations & Cannons is a D&D 5e historical setting. We've stripped out the magical elements and added rules for black powder firearms, grenades, and cannons. We've added new character creation options that showcase the variety of different peoples and languages spoken in North America in the 18th century, and highlight the contributions of women, people of color, Indigenous Americans, and LGBTQA+ folks often forgotten in history. D&D Fishing DLC, Pathfinder Remaster, Travels to Neverland | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast01 May 202301:06:48

It’s a news roundup this week on the Goblins and Growlers Podcast! We’ve got a few nuggets from Wizards of the Coast (including that Pinkerton situation with the pre-release Magic: The Gathering Cards) and a Pathfinder update along with some interesting news from smaller and indie publishers, including a fantastic Kickstarter for a fishing “DLC” for your 5e game.

Also! We have a big Spring Sale going on at our Big Cartel store! Most things are 10 percent off and you can use the code "GRAVYBOAT" for free shipping in the continental U.S. We’re trying to make some space to order new merch for the convention season that begins in the fall, so help us thin things out by grabbing some of our shirt designs before we finally retire them. Plus, pick up some awesome indie RPGs from our friend, Brazilian game designer Cezar Capacle.

TOPICS BELOW:

----more----

  • Andrew Kolb's “Neverland” and “Oz” RPG setting books. We love taking a setting, especially something in the public domain, and creating a game world around them. We discuss what game worlds we’d want to create and play in. What about you?
  • Pathfinder 2E is getting a remaster. What does that mean and what changes players can expect? They’re condensing some materials and eliminating the last vestiges of the Open Gaming License from their books in favor of their home-grown ORC License – the fallout from January continues!
  • We also touch on the new D&D Playtest materials, including the Barbarian, Fighter, Sorcerer (no more bloodlines), Warlock, and Wizard (with simplified subclass names such as "Evoker" instead of "School of Evocation"). All materials are free on the D&D Unearthed Arcana page, and public comment is open until May 17th.
  • Wizards of the Coast sent Pinkerton agents to retrieve prerelease merch from YouTuber Dan "oldschoolmtg" Cannon, who accidentally acquired March of the Machine: Aftermath boxes over a month and a half before retail street date. The Pinkerton Detective Agency was hired to retrieve the allegedly stolen goods, and somewhere between $2,200-$4,400 worth of cards were confiscated. There’s a lot of drama and confusion over what actually happened here.
  • Modiphius, probably most well-known for having the license to “Star Trek” and “Dune” RPGs, is releasing a new "original" setting called “Dreams and Machines.” Set on the planet of Evera Prime, which is cut-off from Earth, players attempt to rebuild the human colonies after they were devastated by deadly mechs called Wakers. Using scraps from the advanced technology left by the Wakers, humans have developed their own cultures and factions, such as the Archivists, Dreamers, and Spears. We talk a little about how, for an original setting, it sure feels a lot like a loose adaptation of the Butlerian Jihad from “Dune.”
  • Lastly, we have a Kickstarter for a 5e fishing "DLC" called "Why Slay Dragons: When You Could Be Fishing." This super-detailed and cool game already has a 35-page sample available on the Kickstarter page and was funded in just 5 minutes. Currently, it's 10x its original funding amount, so this game is coming out with quite a few stretch goal goodies. It looks like so much fun – check it out.
  • Finally – again – don't forget to check out the Spring Sale on the Big Cartel store, where most things are 10 percent off. Use code "GRAVYBOAT" for free shipping and grab some shirt designs before they’re gone forever, and load up on some awesome indie RPGs from their friend Cezar Capacle.

Wizards of the Coast released the new 2024 Player's Handbook last week. It's the first of the 2024 update releases of the Core Rules, with the Dungeon Master's Guide coming in November and the 2024 Monstrous Manual coming in... 2025. Is the update a unique and beneficial experience compared to the 2014 rules? Is this just a cash grab to keep the product cycle alive? What rules are we glad to see? Which ones could we have done without? Thanks to Inver for joining the discussion this week!

Part 1: Don’t Let Robots Write Your Games: Leveraging AI in Gaming Content Creation | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast03 Apr 202300:47:38

Episode Introduction

The internet is abuzz with a variety of different ways to use Large Language Model AIs such as Chat-GPT and Bard. Today our hosts and special guest are going to discuss what the hell "Large Language Model AI" even means, how it's currently used, and how you might use it (ethically!!) to generate content for your at-home TTRPG adventures.

Brandon shares some prompting tips, Tess pontificates on what the near future may hold, and Josh points out why AI will not be running corporate Helpdesk at any point in the near future.

How are you planning to utilize this tool, and what are your thoughts on the morals and ethics of using what is generated to run your own games? Let us know at contact@goblinsandgrowlers.com or on Twitter.

One Dnd Playtesting and Keys from the Golden Vault | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast20 Mar 202301:10:11
Episode Introduction

First things first: We've launched a new monthly newsletter, the Goblins and Growlers Gazette. Here are your key takeaways: It's got some TTRPG news, indie game recommendations, and some hot takes from our podcasts and elsewhere. Also, showing us you're subscribed will get you 10 percent off our booth merchandise at conventions. It's a quick read and a way for all of us to stay connected a little better. Check it out and sign up here.

Now for the episode: We have a couple of things to talk about today. Josh breaks down the new One DnD Druid and Paladin playtest materials, and then Brandon talks about Wizards of the Coast's most recent D&D release, "Keys from the Golden Vault," a most-excellent heist anthology. You can read Josh's playtest breakdown after the jump at the tail end of these show notes -- a reminder that the feedback survey on these opens today, March 20, 2023.

Thoughts on OneD&D "UA" Playtest Materials for Druid and Paladin Overall:

For something that's supposed to be fully compatible with 5e, there are a lot of terminology changes and class rewrites in here. I know they don't love this term, but it really does feel like 5.5e. Yes, it's compatible with 5e, but it's distinct and different enough to feel like its own creature.

A lot of things feel like they're simplifying math and functionality to be easier to read, which is a major plus for accessibility.

Epic Boons as class features granted to "category" of classes (Mages, Experts, Warriors, or Priests), is also a major plus for multi-classers, also multi-classers have simplified rules and blocks to explain those rules right alongside classes.

There's not a ton here to be excited/angry about, with the exception of the changes to Wildshape. So you'll probably hear all about that, and little else, such as the innocuous changes to inspiration points.

Druid:
  • New wildshape rules are pretty rough, and seem likely to be house-ruled by a lot of tables as "We'll just do it the old way". A lot less opportunity for flavor and interesting mechanics, plus removing the second health bar, is a serious nerf to this ability.
  • Making wildshape and other nature spells be part of their own daily limit category of ability, similar to a "Channel Divinity" or "Sorcery Points" feature, seems like an overall boon for the class. More wildshapes for people who exclusively wildshape, more nature spells for people who exclusively do nature spells, more flexibility for folks who do both.
Paladin:
  • Explanation of what your oath means and how one might seek penitence for any violation of that oath, is a huge plus for new roleplayers and GMs alike.
  • WotC specifically highlights recognition that current/previous suggested level 20 benefits were a little on the weaker side, and so have offered a few different possibilities. If folks like one over another, they should probably fill out the feedback so that gets committed.
Dark Sun is Problematic | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast06 Mar 202300:57:32
Episode Introduction

Is the mere depiction of enslavement enough to classify an entire Dungeons & Dragons setting as problematic? Maybe. Recently there was some low-grade Twitter fire about D&D's "Dark Sun" setting, a fan-favorite from the Second Edition era. The setting is known for being D&D on hard mode -- a mostly barren planet ruled by draconic sorcerer kings who revel in oppression, enslavement, and gladiatorial combat; it's a daily struggle to survive on Athas.

Wizards of the Coast employee and Dungeons & Dragons executive producer Kyle Brink recently did an interview with Bob the Worldbuilder and, in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it mention, he talked about how we're unlikely to see a "Dark Sun" rerelease under Fifth Edition or One D&D because of a lot of the issues inherent to the setting.

It was a brief conversation -- less than 30 seconds because mainly they were talking about he recent OGL debacle -- but it got some folks talking about whether it was appropriate to rerelease "Dark Sun" essentially as is in the current climate. Wizards has gotten a ton of flack lately for their seeming inability to get their arms around the lingering racial issues in their content.

In this episode, we go through some of the original "Dark Sun" book to see how deep those elements run throughout the setting and think about whether the setting can stand on its own without them.

Would "Dark Sun" be unrecognizable if those elements were removed, or are some folks just looking to complain and stir up noise on social media? What do you think about Dark Sun as it is now? Would you enjoy the setting if it were tidied up a bit to incorporate some of the cultural lessons we've learned since its publication? Should it have an essentially unchanged re-release? Scratching Our Indie Game Itch(.io) | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast13 Feb 202300:46:38
Episode Introduction

Wizards of the Coast, D&D and the 5e SRD have been dominating the news lately. The whole situation has gotten people talking and thinking a lot more about cool indie games that shouldn't be overlooked. To get away from the 800-pound gorilla that is Dungeons and Dragons, Josh and Brandon picked out a few cool indie games from itch.io. One's about ghosts and another is about demons, so there's a definite trend starting, but they also talk about elder gods in a 1979 beach community, so there's that, too.

OGL Counterspell! D&D Published SRD as Creative Commons | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast30 Jan 202300:37:59
Episode Introduction

Important stuff happening once again! Thanks to intense community backlash, Wizards of the Coast has changed their mind about creating a new, uber-draconian Open Gaming License designed to take the money of the hard-working third-party publishers who've been popularizing D&D since Fifth Edition came out.

They've gone a step further than a lot of us were expecting by releasing the 5E system reference document into Creative Commons, which makes it, essentially, public domain and irrevocable. Josh and Brandon get together on another Saturday afternoon to discuss this late-breaking news.

Has this been enough for you to stick with Wizards and D&D or are they going to take a while to earn back your trust? Whichever way you're leaning, this is a great time to broaden your horizons by exploring other systems. Hit us up at contact@goblinsandgrowlers.com or on Twitter to tell us where you've landed.

Wizards of the Coast’s Open Gaming License Fumble w/Attorney Noah Downs | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast16 Jan 202301:25:32
Episode Introduction

Well, a lot certainly happened while we were gone. All anyone's talking about is Wizards of the Coast trying to roll out the new Open Gaming License and, presumably, put a lot of third-party publishers out of business with the royalty clauses et al.

We invited attorney Noah Downs (@MyLawyerFriend pretty much everywhere) to talk through all the legal issues here, read between the lines of what Wizards is trying to accomplish, and predict where this will all end. Also, it was yet another opportunity for Noah to plug his podcast, "Forgotten Paths."

The day after we recorded this Wizards put out a statement walking back a ton of the things from the original OGL "leak." The statement was a lot of CYA, but it was worth us updating things. At the beginning of this episode, there's an update segment where Josh and Brandon talk about their release and what it means going forward.

Episode Introduction

Welcome to the first-annual Geepers Awards! With 2022 being our first full-year of The Goblins and Growlers Podcast, we decided to take a spin through the last 12 months and touch on each episode from the year. We blitz down the episode list and discuss our favorite and least-favorite topics, guests, and product reviews. At the end of the episode we vote on our favorites and see who earns the inaugural Geepers Award, representing excellence in the field of gaming excellence.

Thanks, everyone, for listening this year. We have a lot of plans for 2023 and we're excited to see where you can help us go.

Programming note: We're largely taking off the next release day (Jan. 2) because we need a break and we'll be getting ready to head to MAGFest. We'll plan to release a shorty that day -- topic unknown. But come see us at panels or the vendor hall if you're going to be at MAG next month.

Writing Adventures... on Deadline! | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast05 Dec 202201:07:23
Episode Introduction

Goblins and Growlers recently resumed regular gaming events in Richmond after more than two years dealing with fits and starts depending on COVID numbers. We've always written our own, original adventures for these games, so starting up games again meant having to write some more original content.

Over the years, we learned not only how to write targeted adventures that lasted roughly three hours -- the usual length of our events -- but also how to structure them in such a way to accelerate the writing process AND make them easy to execute for any of our game masters.

Josh and Brandon, perhaps because it's cathartic to talk about writing on deadline while you're writing on deadline, talk about Goblins and Growlers' writing process and how to be efficient with it. We'll probably come back with another episode soon to talk about structure and how to write a compelling story when you don't actually control the actions of the protagonists.

You Won’t Believe This Dragon Queen’s Shadow! (Dragonlance 5e D&D) | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast21 Nov 202200:59:52
Episode Introduction

Catching up on a few news items this episode, but first, we have to say hello to friend-of-the-show Joe Donka. He shot us a quick message saying he enjoyed our Satanic Panic episode. Thanks, Joe! For podcast newcomers, be sure to go back and listen to our "Joe Donka Trilogy" from earlier in the year. We tracked down Joe so we could talk to him about "The End," his Apocalyptic TTRPG. Then Brandon showed his support for Kelsey Grammar's hopeful return to the role of Beast from X-Men, perhaps the most perfect casting decision of all time

Then onto more frustrating things: D&D's Chris Perkins wrote a blog post talking about Wizards of the Coast's process for sensitivity reading and editing after a sad series of screw-ups culminating in racist content in the recent Spelljammer release.

Finally, we try to talk fulsomely about Dragonlance and the new 5e release in that setting, "Shadow of the Dragon Queen." Something something Kender, something something Krynn. As part of this Dec. 6 release, Wizards is also putting out a board game, "Warriors of Krynn," that ties in with the story and combat of "Shadow." So it's basically a miniature-based wargame, which is an interesting example of time being a flat circle and everything coming back around to its origins.

Episode Introduction

We talk about the Satanic Panic and, in the style of responsible journalists, try to contextualize it to both the cultural and economic mores of the time. This is part 2 of our vaguely Halloween-themed conversation about the stigma of tabletop roleplaying games throughout a large part of the 1980s. Much like last week, we do discuss serious issues such as suicide, so just be aware. All in all, it was a good conversation and maybe a little more grounded than some others. Enjoy and let us know what you think.

D&D Direct Debrief | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast09 Sep 202401:13:05

We debrief on D&D Direct and talk about the new 2024 Players Handbook, the upcoming "total rewrite" of the Dungeon Masters Guide, and potential balance issues to look out for until the new Monstrous Manual comes out. Also, we try to decide Wizards of the Coast employees were actively trolling Josh on the pronunciation of "Sigil" during GenCon, and Brandon makes another push for new box set releases when we talk about the two new Forgotten Realms books coming out as part of the 2024 refresh. Somewhere in there we also mention the Dragon Anthology.

We recorded a couple of longer Deep Dive videos for Patreon that will come out over the next couple of weeks. One of them is on branding and strategy mistakes that WotC has made throughout this whole edition refresh and the other is a discussion about the business end of third-party content on D&D Beyond.

Tom Hanks Vs. Dungeons and Dragons (Mazes and Monsters Review) | The Goblins and Growlers Podcast24 Oct 202201:06:17

Telephone, telegraph, tell a friend about the podcast. Also feel free to leave some five-star reviews on your podcast platform of choice! It really helps put the show in front of new listeners.

Episode Introduction

Tom Hanks is a true treasure. He's probably the best thing about "Mazes and Monsters," a 1982 television movie about a group of friends who take their roleplaying game a little too far. The movie was made in the period right before Hanks really took off, so he was affordable, but after he'd been in "Bosom Buddies." If this had been made any later, there's no way Hanks would have been in it.

----more----

Anyway.

Even though it was made during "The Satanic Panic" and was the adaptation of a wildly sensationalized and factually challenged novel, "Mazes and Monsters" actually manages to be about friends who are trying to be helpful and supportive to one of their own as he's dealing with some severe mental health issues.

We dunk on it a little in this episode, but I'll reiterate that it's not a *terrible* movie. Its production is competent and Hanks really shines in it. You can find it on YouTube and it's free with ads. Just be sure to read up on the actual history of the event that inspired it; we talk about it a little toward the end of the episode.

Episode Introduction

The battle of the acronyms. We're coming back from a recording break and catching up on the news we missed. One of those items -- the big one -- is the latest lawsuit in the back and forth between Wizards of the Coast and Ernie Gygax's problematic reboot of his father's TSR company. The usual race- and gender-related intolerance we've come to expect from them. Also, Hasbro has hired a new senior vice president for Dungeons & Dragons and we discuss what that means for the future of the brand, some prequel books for the D&D movie, and Wizards of the Coast once again dropping the ball with their own race-related issues but this time it's Spelljammer. Small content warning here, too: We read verbatim some stuff from TSR's "Star Frontiers" and the injunction document.

We talked about his system-neutral bestiary, "A Groats-worth of Grotesques," a while back and he found the episode thanks to a writer's block-induced self Googling. Episode Introduction

G. Edward Patterson's ears were burning. We talked about his system-neutral bestiary, "A Groats-worth of Grotesques," a while back and he found the episode thanks to a writer's block-induced self Googling. He reached out and we decided to chat... for an hour and 45 minutes. This is part one of a fun interview that bounces around to a lot of different stuff -- he's a smart person with a lot of different interests -- but trust us that the main thrust is tabletop role-playing games. We promise. Links before to "Groats-worth" and his business, The Skull as a Complete Gentlemen Company. Buy his stuff because, as you'll hear, he really needs to buy a new audio system!
