Episode 6 - In conversation with Mohamed ELRouby12 Apr 202100:27:18

Brené Brown defines vulnerability as uncertainty, risk and emotional exposure.

Vulnerability and leadership are symbiotic friends.

I am not saying that we should be crying in the office. When finance leaders share how they feel, their teams are more willing to open up and share what they are feeling, thinking and experiencing.

It does require us to be more courageous though and embrace that feeling of being outside our comfort zone.

This week we release the sixth leadership chronicle and a story of success shared by Mohamed ELRouby ACMA, CGMA, FPAC, MBA from the 6th conversation of #globalleadershiphypothesis - what makes a great leader.

Food for thought. Leaders who allow themselves to be vulnerable with their teams:

  • Build better relationships
  • Connect at a deeper level with individuals and teams
  • Create the conditions for psychologically safe teams where people are not afraid to be authentic and bring more of their real selves to work
  • Bond their teams through trust
  • Positively impact the creativity and culture of the team

Are you comfortable sharing vulnerability to achieve more ❓Take your leadership to the next level

Episode 4 - In conversation with Jane Gunn09 Apr 202100:24:02

Does your boss trust you?

Hopefully, we can all recall a boss that supported us, helped us to grow and develop and pushed us forward to help us succeed.

When Jane Gunn told me the story of her boss saying he would make the tea while she ran the meeting, my unconscious bias raised its head. I answered, “oh dear”.

I just assumed he would let her make the tea. Actually, it was totally the opposite. He trusted her enough to let her lead the meeting while he made the tea and this was a good 20 years ago.

This week we release the seventh leadership chronicle and a story of success shared by Jane from the 4th conversation of #globalleadershiphypothesis - what makes a great leader.

Food for thought. We trust leaders based on the Trust Triangle (Harvard Business Review – May 2020):

  • Authenticity
  • Empathy
  • Logic

Common trust wobbles are caused by:

  • Misrepresenting parts of yourself (inauthenticity)
  • Putting yourself ahead of others
  • Not enough rigour in your analysis, an inability to execute or communicate your thoughts properly

What causes you to mistrust a leader❓

Episode 2 - In conversation with Gosia Gorna08 Apr 202100:51:36

What is the point of having a team filled with brilliant individuals if we never access their creative brilliance?

Have you ever suffered, felt sad, let down and fearful that you did not know how to do something? Perhaps you were trying to solve the problem yourself, instead of asking for help.

This week we release the fourth leadership chronicle and a story of failure shared by Gosia Gorna from the 2nd conversation of #globalleadershiphypothesis – what makes a great leader.

Food for thought:

Do you regularly brainstorm with your team to unlock creative brilliance

Do you regularly assess whether you are actually solving the right problem or addressing the right challenge

Do you regularly include a “wildcard” in your brainstorming meetings – someone who thinks differently at a cognitive level

Have you ever used the six thinking hats from Debono Group to assign different responsibilities to elicit higher thinking patterns i.e. red = emotion, green = creativity, black = challenge/caution

What else do you do to unlock the creative brilliance in the team?

Take your leadership to the next level

Episode 8 - In conversation with Aliyyah Abdullah08 Mar 202100:33:44

**Are you deadline-driven or people-driven❓**

Sometimes deadline-driven leaders forget to pay attention to the people around them. They miss the conflict, miss spotting social loafing (when the team is carrying a non-performing member), aren't aware of the culture in the team and focus only on doing instead of the primary objective - leading.

I think we may be excused (short-lived) from this as our training in accounting articles sets us up that way. It set me up that way too. Luckily, I had an employee who told me I wasn't leading and just doing – which rocked my perfect world & pulled me out of my predetermined autopilot.

#GlobalLeadershipHypothesis – what makes a great leader?" with Aliyyah Abdullah. Highlights from her interview

❇️Anyone can be a good leader

❇️Introspection, reflection and knowing your limits

❇️Inspire people to challenge

❇️Thriving through a good network of people around you

Episode 12 - In conversation with Cheryl-Jane(CJ) Kujenga04 Feb 202100:34:58

**Are your decisions causing positive ripples in organisations❓**

What we would like to see on boards and in teams is genuine representation from people with different backgrounds adding cognitive diversity to conversations and helping to innovate and generate new ideas.

The average board member has a seven to eight-year tenure, yet the decisions they make create a ripple effect on people in the organisation for up to 15 to 20 years. They feel the impact, both positive and negative, of those decisions.

These are some of the key messages from the interview with Cheryl-Jane (Cj) Kujenga for the 12th video of the series "#GlobalLeadershipHypothesis – what makes a great leader?"

Some of the highlights of this interview

❇️People making an impact and a difference every day

❇️Every person has a purpose, a voice and can show leadership potential

❇️Bringing humanity back into decision making

❇️ Leaders are the glue

❇️Having fun at work

❇️Creating psychological safety

❇️The fear of vulnerability

❇️The culture of fear as a driver of corporate failures

Are you a leader that works through your people❓

**Are your strengths and values used effectively in your current organisation and or role❓**

“Great leaders create environments that help others to identify their strengths and values to bring their best selves to everything they do” -Andrew Codd #SITN.

As a finance leader, we can only have a limited impact on our own. Andrew used an African proverb “When we go alone, we go fast. When we go together, we go far” to describe how we can achieve greater outcomes.

Some of the highlights and key messages from the interview with Andrew Codd in the series " #GlobalLeadershipHypothesis – what makes a great leader?" are:

❇️Great vision + great purpose = great results

❇️Regular team engagement = ideal outcomes

❇️Close value gaps for your stakeholders and teams = people want to associate with you

❇️The affliction of finance – focus on results as opposed to asking the right questions

❇️ Not needing to know everything

❇️Learning to ask for help sooner

❇️ Pushing yourself outside your comfort zone

❇️Leading diverse teams = advantages for leader & individuals

❇️Learning from failure

❇️Disconnect yourself from your role

Do you separate your role from who you are❓

Episode 27 - In conversation with Jack McCullough01 Feb 202100:34:04

**Do we ignore the ‘soft skills’ in Finance because we find them harder to attain? **

Technical skills alone will not make us great leaders. The best accountant or controller does not become the CFO – it’s the best team builder and communicator that leaps ahead.

We need to know how to build teams, empathise with individuals, be competent at communicating effectively and unafraid to show vulnerability.

Circumstances help to define great leaders and they value the opinions of others.

These were some of the great remarks from the conversation with Jack McCullough for the  series "#GlobalLeadershipHypothesis – what makes a great leader?" are:

Some of the other key themes & insights:

❇️Great leader traits - transparency, focus, humility,
compassion

❇️ Start = a true self-assessment with trusted allies

❇️ Know what you are passionate about and good at

❇️ Learn to present financials in an interesting way

❇️Ineffective communication holds leaders back

❇️ Inspire teams and individuals to be better versions
of themselves

❇️ Adaptability and flexibility in changing environments

❇️Leadership failure = being the smartest person in the
room, not inviting challenge and making no mistakes

Episode 25 - In conversation with Sir David Walker11 Dec 202000:32:56

**Great leadership is not all about the leader**

When I asked Sir David Walker, a former Airforce General, board director and chair, and the former master of the Queen’s household “What makes a great leader?”, he immediately turned my question about great leadership to great followship.

“It’s all about good and great followers. It’s about having a good team. Sometimes the leader is a member of the team, other times the leader plays a role at the front of the team. Sometimes the leader passes the baton to someone else to lead, depending on the context” & what is needed to achieve the best for everyone.

Other insights from the conversation  with Sir David in the series
#GlobalLeadershipHypothesis – what makes a great leader?" are:

❇️Having a clear understanding of the culture you want

❇️ Culture needs to be lived by the leaders and needs continuous focus

❇️ Crucial ingredient = trust = effective leadership

❇️ Be prepared for mistakes and dealing with them justly

❇️Preoccupation with I know the answer holds leaders back

❇️Finding out the best way to achieve something from those around you

❇️Set an intent and then delegate and empower individuals to act

❇️Preoccupation with a systemic linear approach to change

Episode 11 - In conversation with Robin Kiziak12 Nov 202000:36:57

**Great leadership is more of an art than a science**

There are different ways of approaching leadership and one of the most effective is learning from mistakes either your own or the mistakes of others. It is an iterative process of influencing and inspiring people around you. Leading from the front, being a role model and pointing the way forward. Practising and adapting when you get things wrong.

Some of the highlights and key messages from the conversation with Robin Kiziak in the series " #GlobalLeadershipHypothesis – what makes a great leader?" are:

❇️Knowing your own strengths and what the team can do

❇️Having a vision of the future

❇️Bringing people along on a journey

❇️Needing diverse thinking, skills and strengths in a team

❇️ Collaboration, empathy and team culture

❇️Being intentional about creating a culture

❇️Having confidence as a leader

❇️Take leadership of your own career

Are you getting others to do what you want to, because they want to do it❓

Episode 20 - In conversation with Brad Eisenhuth09 Nov 202000:31:45

**Do we dare to think differently in Finance❓**

Do we dare to focus on creating a tribe and learning from failure in finance?

Do you feel safe to say what you really think and be who you are?

Does your leader listen to you and create willing followers?

Do you feel like you are part of a journey that matters?

Does your team have the conditions (culture) that will help you achieve and grow?

Is your team more than the sum of the parts and are you supporting your leader to be better?

Do you make time for finding solutions together?

Some of the key questions (above) answered & messages (below) from the conversation with Brad Eisenhuth for the series "#GlobalLeadershipHypothesis – what makes a great leader?" are:

❇️ Capacity to listen first

❇️A lack of humility can hold leaders back

❇️Giving others a sense of belief in their willingness to grow

❇️Leadership does not start at the top

❇️Values fit is crucial

❇️Start with the end in mind & what makes the biggest difference now

❇️Creating experiences for others & focus on how they feel

❇️ Maximise quality of communication

How do you think differently❓
