In this bitesize episode, we celebrate the start of the festive period with the Silversmithing and Jewellery Christmas Sale, as well as the upcoming Year 4 work-in-progress show. Undergraduate programme leader Anna Gordon is joined by Year 4 student Liatris Bian and Year 3 student Yasaman Basmanesh, who discuss their work and what they hope to get out of the sale.
 
The S&J Christmas Sale takes place from Monday 1st until Tuesday the 9th of December in the Garnethill gallery of the Reid Building, and features over 60 bespoke pieces, made to measure by students, staff and artists in residence at The Glasgow School of Art. 

Proceeds from the sale go towards fundraising for the Silversmithing and jewellery Year 3 academic trip to Munich. 

It coincides with the Year 4 Silversmithing & Jewellery work in progress show in the Garnethill Gallery. The show will run until Thursday 11 December; 'a rinse, a spin, a transformation' is the show's theme.

The GSA is marking the centenary of Scottish artist Ian Hamilton Finlay withWar and Pieces of a Garden, an exhibition in the Reid Building which explores key moments in Finlay's life and work, and what makes his art resonate in the present day. 

Photographer Robin Gillanders is joined by GSA Exhibitions and Cultural Development Coordinator John Farrell and GSA Library and Collections Manager Duncan Chappell discuss their experiences with and perspectives on Ian Hamilton Finlay, as well as explaining what goes into putting an exhibition like this together.

Julia Keyte is a very experienced designer and academic, whose career has encompassed teaching, leadership, research and practice. She oversees the Architecture, Interior Design and Product and Furniture Design programmes at Bath Spa University, leading a group of talented designers embedding inventive, collaborative curriculums grounded in active and hands-on learning. 

She has been leading and teaching on undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in design and craft since 2004, including BA (Hons) Product and Furniture Design at Bath Spa University, and BA (Hons) Jewellery and Metalwork at Sheffield Hallam University. 

Julia graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 1998. She also has an MFA in Product Design from the Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam (2003), from a department that embraced cross-disciplinary design. During this period her work was nominated for the first Dutch Design Prize.

Beanie graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2008, moving to London and working for renowned designer Shaun Leane. 

Jewellery consultant and stylist Beanie Major has spent a decade delving into women's jewellery boxes, garnering an unrivalled insight into the distinctive and personal role jewellery plays in a woman's life. 

Known for her impeccable taste and deep knowledge of the industry, Beanie works closely with her clients to help them find exactly what they are looking for. 

Launched in 2011, In Detail started life as an online jewellery publication documenting the jewellery boxes of inspiring women and providing a platform for jewellers around the world. 

As more and more people got in touch for advice on buying their engagement ring, Beanie realised there was a jewellery buyer, who also had a deep appreciation for originality, quality and design.

Andrew Lamb graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2000 and completed his masters at The Royal College of Art, London in 2004. He balances his time between his jewellery practice and lecturing at The Glasgow School of Art, where he is a Reader in Jewellery.  Andrew, an Honorary Member of The World Crafts Council Europe, has received multiple awards for his work. Including prizes for technological innovation in the Goldsmiths' Craft and Design Council Awards, London and the prestigious Arts Foundation Fellowship Award for Jewellery in 2010. Work has been acquired for collections including the Crafts Council, The Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths', Aberdeen Museum & Art Gallery and The Victoria & Albert Museum. 

South Korea-born jewellery designer and maker Misun Won moved to the UK and enrolled on a MA programme at the Edinburgh College of Art in 2006/2007. From 2008, she started working as a professional jewellery artist in UK. She has showed her jewellery at major UK and international craft shows including Origin, Collect, Goldsmiths' Fair, Elements, Baltimore American Craft Show, and SOFA Chicago/New York. . She has won many awards including Goldsmiths' Craft & Design Council award and Creative Scotland open project funding. She works as a residence artist at Coburg House Art Studio in Edinburgh.

What is advanced entry?

Not all the new students on our four-year undergraduate degree programmes come straight from secondary school or begin their studies in first year. We accept a range of qualifications, and many of our entrants come with advanced entry – meaning they begin their studies in second or third year.

What is CAS? 

Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies or CAS is a specific requirement for International applicants who receive an offer and require a visa. A CAS is issued from an education provider once an applicant has confirmed that they want to take up their offer and have met any conditions required for that offer, for example proof of qualifications and English Language test scores. The CAS can then be used to make a VISA application.

The Tree Project: Cóilín Ó Dubhghaill 

Cóilín Ó Dubhghaill is a silversmith producing work that explores vessel forms through a study of process, materials and colour. Cóilín trained at Grennan Mill craft school and Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 1996. He subsequently worked as a designer for industry in India, the Philippines, and the UK, and set up a workshop in Kilkenny, Ireland. 

In 1998, he moved to Tokyo, to study in the metalwork department at the National University of Fine Arts and Music (Tokyo Geidai), receiving a doctorate in 2005. From 2007-2019, Cóilín worked as a Senior Research Fellow at Sheffield Hallam University. He currently lectures in the School of Design at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. 

He exhibits his work internationally and has pieces in collections including the National Museum of Ireland, the Goldsmiths' Collection, London, and the Marzee collection, Netherlands.

The Tree Project: Cathie Pilkington 

Cathie Pilkington is an artist whose work engages passionately and critically with the canonical history of figurative sculpture. Crossing the borders of traditional, modern and contemporary idioms, her work combines intensively modelled and painted sculptures within immersive installations comprising a diverse array of props, materials and studio furniture. Her site-responsive installations are balanced ambivalently between chaos and precision and have been described as a kind of art historical fly-tipping. 

Pilkington studied at Edinburgh College of Art (1986-91) and The Royal College of Art (1995-97). 

She was elected a Royal Academician in 2014 and became the first female professor of Sculpture at the Royal Academy Schools 2016-2019. 

In 2020 she was elected Keeper of the Royal Academy of Art, London.

The Tree Project:  Nicola Glass & Maeve Gillies  

Nicola Glass is an Irish-born creative director and designer with over two decades experience in the luxury fashion industry. Nicola's varied career includes working as a handbag designer at Gucci under the creative direction of Tom Ford, 13 years leading accessory design at Michael Kors and, most recently, serving as Creative Director of Kate Spade. 

Maeve Gillies BA Hons MA RCA FSA Scot is a multi-award-winning Scottish-American jeweller, designer and brand consultant with 30 years luxury design innovation, manufacturing and global brand-building experience across North America, Asia, Australia and Europe.

The Tree Project: Lorna Watson & Lynne Craig 

Lorna Watson is the founder of STELAR, a purpose-led brand focussed on the principles of community, craftsmanship, transparency and regeneration. Born and established in Bali, STELAR collaborates with local artisan communities to create luxury handcrafted bags and accessories that preserve high-level heritage weaving skills. Their mission is to build a modern luxury brand, that continues to set new industry standards of traceability by bringing value to the people and skills behind each item they create, not only the item itself. 

Lynne Craig's practice connects design, technology, education, and business development; exploring the frontiers of emergent technologies and cultural change. Throughout her career she has built businesses, created products, designed systems for global audiences, and continues to reimagine what the role of 'making' in design, education and business looks like for tomorrow. She has recently been interviewed for the New York Times, exploring futures in jewellery, and has created celebrated immersive retail experiences globally for premium international brands across fashion, beauty and luxury sectors, including De Beers, Louis Vuitton, Uniqlo and Dunhill.

The Tree Project: Katy Hackney & Anna Gordon 

Katy Hackney's jewellery is an on-going exploration of material, colour and form. She regularly exhibits worldwide and her work can be found in public and private collections across the UK and abroad. Katy also serves as an Associate Lecturer in Jewellery Design at Central Saint Martins. 

Anna Gordon, now Head of Silversmithing and Jewellery Design at the Glasgow School of Art, studied at ECA under Dorothy Hogg graduating in 1994. Alongside her impressive teaching career, Gordon has an established reputation as outstanding artist jeweller in her own right, creating geometric kinetic jewellery, usually oxidised silver and gold, often constructed from repeated units and with a strong linear quality.

This short podcast special for the La Biennale di Venezia unfolds across four conversations – moving from personal practice to global questions – tracing how art schools operate as sites and agents of making, thinking and social change 

Developed by The Glasgow School of Art for Scotland + Venice at La Biennale de Venezia, this special brings together three voices to reflect on: research, creative practice and making; journeys into art school; the gallery as an experimental space; the role of art education in society and why a creative education matters now. 

Professor Penny Macbeth, Director and Principal of The Glasgow School of Art is a designer and educator, whose practice spans textiles, drawing, and material thinking. Her work explores making as a form of knowledge and the role of creative education in shaping future practice.  

Omar Kholeif is a professor of Global Art Theory and Practice, as well as a writer curator and cultural historian. Born in Cairo and raised internationally, Kholeif has authored over twenty books and curatord more than one hundred exhibitions. 

Finally, Jenny Brownrigg is a curator with over two decades of experince in university galleries, and leads exhibitions across the GSA supporting research, students and international artistic dialogue.

In this episode of the GSA Podcast, PhD researcher Michael Collazzo discusses undertaking a practice-led PhD, and what it has afforded him as an artist. 

Michael's PhD project centres on the completion of a three-year-long ballpoint pen drawing. Huge in scale and impressive for its intricacy, the drawing is just as important for its process as it is for the end work. In his research, grief is the drawing tool, and his project researches queer grief through the medium of drawing.

Michael is joined by Laura Guy, Reader in Gender, Sexuality and Culture at the Glasgow School of Art, who provides insight into what makes for a successful portfolio, and the specific goals and challenges of completing a PhD within Fine Art.
