Virginia Lillye - A tribute20 Oct 202501:58:23

On Sunday 19th October 2025, I got word that Virginia Lillye lost her 2 year battle with cancer.

Virginia was a powerhouse on stage but more so a beacon of hope and positivity off it, which makes it that more difficult to believe she is no longer with us.

In tribute, I want to share with you the parts of her life that she shared with me for this podcast.

She made a couple of appearances on the show. The first one being in September 2020 which that conversation became episode 98 of the Gig Life Podcast.

The 2nd time was in 2021 when she shared 4 gig stories which 2 of them featured in the A Few Gig Tales series.

Im going to play all of that in its entirety here today. First up is the 2020 interview and directly after that is all 4 of her gig stories, so stick around till the end.

For those that knew her, I hope you get comfort from hearing her voice, and for those of you who didnt, her spirit is well and truely alive here. Here infectious laugh, her knack of telling a great story, and of course her positivity.

We have lost a giant.

Rest in love Virginia Lillye ❤️

Episode 58: Brad Kora27 Sep 201901:13:17

Brad Kora.

Drummer, producer, songwriter from Whakatane, New Zealand.

Brad is the founding member, drummer and producer of NZ band, L.A.B
Also, with his brothers Laughton, Fran and Stu Kora, along with Dan McGruer, formed the powerhouse NZ festival band of the 2000's, KORA.

Brad is also gym owner, teacher and student of BJJ.

During this podcast, we got to talk about the forming LAB, and the band now in its current state, the recording process in detail of their upcoming 3rd album, we talked about his early childhood playing in the family band, and the forming of and story of KORA.

Also, being a drummer, of course we had to geek out on drums, drummers and drumming. And there’s a bunch of other stuff in there as well.

Now, what really struck me about Brad during this interview was his willingness, openess in discussing his musical process, LAB’s process, and he gives away a lot of trade secrets. In a age, in my opinion, where people don’t like to give too much away, this was extremely refreshing.

I hope you enjoy it.

TGLP Spotlight Series is where I (Stevie Taylor) and my friends sit down and talk about our favourite musicians. Be it local, be it worldwide. Musicians that have influenced us,inspired us, impacted us as musicians ourselves.
We talk about their careers, their music, legacy, we listen to some of the songs they’ve played on and we analyse these songs the best way we know how.
This is certainly not a new concept, we’re not changing the game here. We are just hanging out, bouncing stories of each other, sharing information that the others may not have known. But in the process, adding to the legacy of these brilliant musicians.

Joining me to talk about Jeff Porcaro are 3 fantastic drummers and 1 legendary guitarist:

Dave Ferry https://www.thegiglifepodcast.com/episodes/episode-39-dave-ferry

Jonnie and Dave were also part of TGLP Drummers Roundtable

And we are also extremely honoured and lucky yo be joined by the legendary american guitarist and producer, Louie Shelton
Over the past several decades you would have heard Louie Shelton’s signature guitar riffs and solos on more hit records than any other session guitarist in history. The Wrecking Crew, The Monkees,  Boz Scaggs, Lionel Ritchie, Glen Campbell, Seals and Croft and so much more…A true legend. Louie and Jeff both played together on Boz Scaggs Silk Degrees album.

Episode 30: Mark Dynamix07 Feb 201900:59:45

Mark Dynamix

A true legend in Australian dance music, Mark Dynamix knows a thing or two about how the music industry revolves in Australia.  From producing his own records, DJing, hosting events, radio broadcasting and running his own label (Long Distance Recordings), he has been forefront in the minds of Australian dance music enthusiasts for over 25 years; with over 35+ releases under his belt and having sold more mix albums with his name on them than any other DJ in Australia to date.

Mark got his break on radio in the acid house phase of 1990 and then in Sydney’s burgeoning rave scene of 1992. He took up a long standing residency in 1997 at Sublime, played a 10,000 capacity Boiler Room at the Big Day Out in 2003 (plus 2010 and 2013), hosted Triple J’s Mix Up (1997, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2010, performed at The Love Parade, Berlin (2006) + his travels have taken his to gigs all over Europe, Canada and Asia.

Currently heading up and running Ministry Of Sound Recordings Australia, Mark is behind the leading dance music compilations in Australia – The Annual, Chillout Sessions, Running Trax & the recent DJ mix collaboration with Robbie Lowe and KLP called  Sessions: Rebirth.

Mark is planning a big 2019 with a triple album of original music to be released shortly. His successful JACK THE HOUSE and ELECTRONIQUE events continue to invoke warm musical nostalgia on a tri-basis in Sydney and his radio shows THE LISTENING ROOM (with Robbie Lowe) and ELECTRONIQUE RADIO are, available to stream on mixcloud.com/MarkDynamix.

Mark DJ’s with the kind of versatility that sees him warming up for icons like Boy George, Joey Negro, Chicane, Paul Oakenfold & Miguel Migs recently; as well as spinning club nights like S.A.S.H, FoxLife, Café Del Mar & Spektrum and regularly promoting his own events Jack The House & Electronique. Whatever the brief, he meets it with the kind of precision & professionalism that only a DJ of his experience can.
