"A Place to Call Home" Fostering and Adopting with Kyle Nordfors08 Feb 202100:43:19

Kyle Nordfors' fatherhood journey took an unexpected turn when his wife Debbie invited one of her students to have Thanksgiving dinner with them. Dinner turned to fostering this young man and through constant support and love, fostering turned to adoption and now a place for Kai to call home. In this episode, Kyle recounts the feelings of becoming a foster family and providing a safe haven to a young man that needed structure and direction. The success of Kai and the story behind his recent legal adoption will give you hope and warm your heart.

Kyle is a commercial airline pilot, search and rescue drone volunteer, soccer coach, small business owner, athlete and friend (among many other things). He and his wife Debbie married in 2016 and have five children between the two of them. They have both lived as single parents, successfully blended family, co-parented with ex spouses and now adopted together. The experience and wisdom from this interview is valuable to each of us as the main take-aways are applicable to each one of us as parents. Our kids just need us there.

We hope you find value and hope in the story of the Nordfors family.

Mark Massey is a very effective communicator and connector. He's had plenty of practice as a dad and as an serial entrepreneur.  Mark discusses the “3 things” he has had to work on to become a better father. Mark  covers what it was like being raised by a dedicated step-father after the loss of his father as a child. He shares many  'ah-ha' moments with us as we cover topics like unconditional love, allowing our kids to fail and allowing ourselves those introspective moments as fathers to change course and become better versions of ourselves.

We hope this episode finds you well and that your holidays have been memorable.

“The Importance of Positive Mentorship” with Alex Austin02 Nov 202000:35:00

This week we spoke with Alex Austin, the Director of A-Train for Youth. Their mission is to provide children and young athletes of all ages, talent levels and economic situations an opportunity to improve their athletic abilities, build confidence, learn teamwork and enhance communication in a fun and entertaining environment.  He took us through some of the things he does to step into the role of a positive male mentor to his athletes and shares why that has become so important.

Alex brings more than 15-years professional and collegiate athletic experience to the youth that he teaches. His experience includes coaching and directing camps for many notable Universities, head coaches and professional athletes. Although his program initially focused on basketball camps, it has since evolved to include teams and training athletes. The A-Train program now includes over 300 kids, ranging in age from 6-18 years and varying in different skill development.

His goal is to give guidance and strengthen youth through sports activities, education and community service. A-Train players amass over 10,000 hours of giving back to their community each season, and each child in the program is required to maintain a respectable GPA , with a goal of maintaining a 3.5 program wide GPA.  We also educate the kids on proper nutrition, the danger of drugs, respecting parents and being a good citizen.

Alex Austin makes it his personal mission to ensure that every child who participates in his program is personally recognized and acknowledged. He has developed a system that not only teaches and improves a child’s skill in the sport of basketball, but has also learned how to reach them on an individual level to reinforce the values necessary to succeed in life.

His insights in this episode are invaluable to us as parents as we seek to have the things we teach reinforced through others-and allow ourselves to become that mentor to other kids as we help our next generation grow in ladies and gentlemen.

Enjoy the episode!

Cody Hofhine, a successful entrepreneur and owner of Joe Homebuyer, did just that and joins us to share the journey. This father of four talks about balancing his booming business with his biggest role yet - parenting.  Cody shares how he instills principles like humility, honesty, hope, and hard work into his family's everyday life, and the challenge of being present as a parent, and bringing them into your daily routines, even when you can't physically bring your kids to work.

Redefining Family Legacy beyond Wealth and Possessions with Scott Donald06 Sep 202300:41:30

Imagine having the power to mold your kids into value-creating adults who understand the value of money and work. Sounds incredible, right? Well, our guest today, Scott Donnell, is here to share his insights on how to do just that! With a background in building companies and a burning desire to instill financial acumen in young minds, Scott has dedicated his life to teaching value creation to children. He has created a unique system and an app that not only helps parents save money but also educates kids on budgeting and saving.

Now picture a legacy that goes beyond wealth, where you pass down values and stories that last generations. Intriguing, isn’t it? Scott postulates that creating family legacies should pivot on value creation rather than money accumulation. He meticulously breaks down three types of values – material, emotional, and spiritual – and how each contributes to crafting a successful family legacy. This discussion is punctuated with practical examples from Scott’s life, offering us a real-life portrait of how to instill the idea of earning based on the value created.

This isn’t just about passing on money, but about passing on values, character, and the power of hard work that will have lasting effects. So, join us as we navigate the path to creating a future generation that's financially literate and values-driven.

Preparing Your Kids for Monetary Success: A Chat with Chad Willardson10 Jul 202300:39:50

Are you ready to arm your children with the crucial skill of financial literacy? Join us as we pick the brain of Chad Willardson, founder, and president of Pacific Capital and author of four books focused on finance and literacy. A parent of five, Chad's unique approach to teaching his children about money is both unconventional and inspiring. From opening bank accounts at a tender age to forgoing the traditional forms of allowance, Chad offers a fresh perspective on preparing children for financial success.

Our conversation quickly turns to the importance of instilling the concepts of cash flow, taxes, and the value of earning in children. We explore Chad’s interesting home economy model, designed to give kids an early start in financial skills. We also discuss his innovative company, Gravy Stack, which ingeniously combines banking with games, making financial education fun for kids. On a deeper level, we discuss how to balance wealth protection and generosity, a principle Chad strongly advocates for.

As we engage further, we delve into the crucial topic of legacy. How can we leave a legacy that outlasts us? How should we encourage our kids to embrace financial literacy? Chad not only shares his insights on these matters but also brings a personal touch with a powerful message from his grandmother about the role of relationships in legacy. We conclude by examining ways to translate financial literacy into real-life experiences for kids and the significance of leaving an enduring legacy. Join us on this enlightening journey as we unpack the keys to raising financially-competent children.

Cultivating Connection: Raising a Tight-Knit Family with David Gilliland13 Jun 202300:45:47

Imagine saying "no" to countless things just to be able to powerfully say "yes" to what truly matters. In this episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with David Gilliland, a father who has done just that. By cultivating a culture of friendship and intentionality, David has successfully raised eight daughters into a tight-knit family.

As we delved into the intentional planning and growth strategies that David and his wife employ, we discovered how they maintain a strong bond with their children. From daily walks to weekly check-ins and a focus on serving each other, they've built a family life that revolves around their shared values and goals. David also opens up about the importance of vulnerability in parenting, teaching his children that it's okay to make mistakes and rely on their parents for guidance.

We also explored how David's family navigates transitions and tackles challenges together. With unique approaches such as "question and answer" nights for their teens, they've fostered a nurturing environment where open communication thrives. Listen in as David shares his wisdom on connecting with your children one small step at a time and how to not let discouragement stand in the way of making a change.

David's organization is hosting an event for business owners in August to teach leadership in all aspects of life. Kirk will be presenting there as well. If you'd like more information, please follow the link!

Jae Schmutz knows that making others feel appreciated begins at home. He witnessed the effects of his loving parents and also experienced tragedy when he lost his mom to cancer as a young boy. This inspired him to take action and prioritize time with family, showing respect for those around him in both word and deed - opening doors, sending flowers, being polite ... Jae believes we can all make our world better by modeling positive behavior starting within the walls of our own homes!

Jae is the SVP of NetJets
