Tim Finn – Escapade: The Album That Shaped Margaret’s Musical Journey | Sombr Train Split Enz14 Mar 202600:33:12

Welcome to The Friday Vinyl Club Podcast — where every day feels like Friday and every record tells a story.

This week, I’m delighted to welcome my great friend, Margaret, dialling in from South London for a deep dive into her vinyl pick: Tim Finn’s 1983 debut solo album, Escapade.

Margaret shares warm, early musical memories, crediting her dad’s influence and explaining how Escapade — and its hit single, “Fraction Too Much Friction” — helped her learn English as a teenager in the Netherlands. She recounts the humorous discovery of the link between Split Enz, Tim Finn, and Neil Finn of Crowded House, and how music became a bridge across family and culture.

Along the way, we touch on how platforms like TikTok are shaping her kids’ musical education, and she recommends “Undressed” by Sombr. Stick around until the end to hear which track became the ultimate family singalong on long trips!

This week, I connect across the globe with Lachie Holt, an inspirational New Zealand school teacher who turned a classroom project into a real-life vinyl record! Lachie and his Hamilton East students created a stunning tribute to Split Enz’s debut album Mental Notes, pressing it to vinyl and celebrating the music that inspired them.

We dive into the story behind this ambitious project, Lachie’s own musical journey — including the role his Grandad played — and why Mental Notes became the perfect creative inspiration.

We officially submit the original Split Enz classic to the Friday Vinyl Club, and Lachie also shares his current musical favourites, including Fat Freddy’s Drop, Mac DeMarco, and Cowboy Dan.

Fontaines D.C. – Skinty Fia: Plus Emily’s Journey from Blondie to her Mosh Pit Community | Kneecap13 Mar 202600:31:05

Welcome to The Friday Vinyl Club Podcast — where every day feels like Friday and every record tells a story.

This episode I’m delighted to welcome my beautiful niece, Emily, for a deep dive into her vinyl pick: Skinty Fia (2022) by Irish rock band Fontaines D.C.

Emily shares warm, early musical memories, citing her mum's influence (Celine Dion, Bee Gees) before her own tastes turned to heavier rock (Black Sabbath) and, eventually, the punk and DIY music scene where she found her community and confidence at live gigs. She explains how the energetic and poetic nature of Skinty Fia became a driving soundtrack to her running, and we delve into the album's dark themes and striking cover art, featuring the extinct Irish Elk.

Along the way, we touch on her love of intimate music venues like The Trades Club and The Piece Hall, her tendency to crowdsurf, the controversial brilliance of Irish hip-hop band Kneecap, and her thoughts on coloured vinyl. Stick around until the end to hear her current recommendations, including the ethereal sounds of Soria and the Japanese-based folk band Pinch of Snuff!

Editors – The Weight of Your Love: Plus Andy’s Journey from Borrowed Guitars to Crowded House Tribute Band | OMD / The Jam / Paul Weller/Neil Finn /SUPALUNG09 Jan 202600:30:13

Welcome to The Friday Vinyl Club Podcast — where every day feels like Friday and every record tells a story.

This episode, I’m delighted to be joined by Andy Thomas from Birmingham. I first met Andy back at a gig in 2007, and over the years, I’ve had the privilege of becoming great friends with him and his family—I even once shared the stage with him to play tambourine for his Crowded House tribute band, Crowded Out!

Andy’s pick for this episode is the 2013 album The Weight of Your Love by the British band Editors. Recorded live in Nashville, this record marked a significant shift for the band, embracing a fresh Americana vibe with a cinematic sound.

Before we dive into the tracks, Andy takes us back to his very first musical memories. He shares a wonderful story of being a "wannabe drummer" in the early 70's, using a household pouffé as a bass drum and paintbrushes for drumsticks to play along to Top of the Pops.

We also discuss his first experiences with vinyl—from The Sweet’s Teenage Rampage to his eventual graduation to full-length albums like The Boomtown Rats’ A Tonic for the Troops.

Along the way, we explore:

  • The Live Evolution: Andy’s first concert experience with OMD at the Birmingham Odeon in 1981 and his deep dive into The Jam.
  • Becoming a Musician: How a "rubbish" borrowed guitar and a passion for Paul Weller led him from the bedroom to fronting the Crowded House Tribute Band Crowded Out
  • The Crowded House Connection: Our mutual love for Neil Finn and the unique magic of live shows that change every single night.

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – No More Shall We Part: Plus Coffee Girl Katrine on 'The Vortex' and the Power of Community | Mitski | Flea | Neu Sierra | Robyn |Bowie / Swift30 Jan 202600:49:54

Welcome to The Friday Vinyl Club Podcast — where every day feels like Friday and every record tells a story.

This episode, I’m delighted to be joined by the incredible Katrine from Copenhagen. A dear friend and founder of the Nick Cave fan community The Vortex, Katrine joins us to discuss a record that bridges the gap between haunting beauty and deep personal history.

Katrine’s pick is the 2001 masterpiece No More Shall We Part by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Marking Cave's return after a four-year hiatus, the album is a profound exploration of faith, love, and the fragile fear of losing what we cherish.

Katrine takes us back to her childhood in the Danish countryside, where her father’s avid vinyl collection—featuring everything from Pink Floyd and Leonard Cohen and her Mother taught her the "model man" was David Bowie, all laying the foundation for her own musical journey.

Along the way, we explore:

  • The Family Vinyl Collection: How Katrine came to "curate" some of her father's original vinyl collection a
  • The Power of Memory: The deeply moving story of listening to this album with her mother and how a live performance years later brought some "lost" memories rushing back.
  • The Hidden Gems: Beyond the more well known, we dive into the comedic genius of "God is in the House," the lyrical brilliance of "Darker With the Day," and the "chef’s kiss" transition between "Oh My Lord" and "Sweetheart Come."
  • The Vortex Community: A look at how a Bad Seed Tee Vee chatroom sparked a real life community named by Bad Seed band member Warren Ellis
  • The "Coffee Girl" Origin Story: How a simple ritual of cheers-ing Nick Cave with a coffee cup led to the man himself calling Katrine his "Danish Coffee Girl" and signing books specifically for her.
  • The "Concert Aunt": Katrine embraces her role as the family's dedicated barrier-seeker, from passing the vinyl tradition to her 15-year-old daughter to queuing 10 hours for Taylor Swift.

Friday Spin: Katrine delivers a diverse "starter pack" for your ears! Stick around for her top recommendations, including the alternative-pop powerhouse Mitski, the upcoming solo work from Flea, Robyn a Swedish Pop icon & her Danish obsession, Neu Sierra.

The Human League – Dare: Plus Will Burns on his Journey from Kylie Minogue to Kate Bush and the Ant & Dec BGT Golden Buzzer that changed everything. / Deacon Blue / Nirvana16 Jan 202600:43:36

Welcome to The Friday Vinyl Club Podcast — where every day feels like Friday and every record tells a story.

This episode, I’m delighted to be joined by the incredibly talented Will Burns. Originally from Leeds, Will is the comedy impressionist who captured the nation’s attention on Britain’s Got Talent in 2025, earning a Golden Buzzer and a place in the semi-finals. While he’s famous for his voices, today we’re talking about his deep-rooted passion for the synthesizers and style of the early 80s.

Will’s pick is the 1981 masterpiece "DARE!" by The Human League. A record that defined an era, "DARE!" perfectly captured the shift from avant-garde electronic experimentation to the polished, global pop perfection that redefined the charts.

Before we dive into the tracks, Will takes us back to his first "public performance." He shares a brilliant story of standing in a church aisle as a toddler, interrupting the hymns to demand the congregation "put Kylie on" so he could sing "Can't Get You Out of My Head."

We also explore his late-blooming love for vinyl, which began not with a vintage find, but with a £30 Black Friday turntable and a copy of Nirvana’s "Nevermind". From those modest beginnings, Will has built a staggering collection of over 1,000 records!

Along the way, we explore:

  • The Family Influence: A "healthy mix" of his father’s Celtic roots and Van Morrison paired with his mother’s love for New Wave pioneers like Depeche Mode and Bronski Beat—the perfect foundation for his "better late than never" musical awakening.

  • The "Sliding Doors" Moment: The incredible history of Phil Oakey recruiting two teenagers from the Crazy Daisy nightclub to save a band that was on the brink of collapse.

  • The Vogue Aesthetic: The story behind the iconic album cover, inspired by the high-fashion world of Vogue magazine, marking the band's transition into their "glam" era.

  • The Accidental Anthem: Why the band originally dismissed "Don't You Want Me" as a throwaway "Des O'Connor" song and buried it as the final track on the album.

  • From BGT to Synth-Pop: Will reflects on his Britain’s Got Talent experience, including his brilliant comedic twist on the classic "Don’t You Want Me."

  • Friday Spin: Stick around for Will's "Friday Spin" recommendation—the atmospheric genius of the 2005 double album Aerial by the iconic Kate Bush!

The Beatles – Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band: @Vinylbenjy on Beatles Shower Songs, Amazon's Glitch, His 18-Copy Obsession Obsession and beyond| The Lemon Twigs | Tchotchke | McCartney Live 13 Feb 202600:33:14

Welcome to The Friday Vinyl Club Podcast — where every day feels like Friday and every record tells a story.

This episode, I’m delighted to be joined by Benjy from New York. Better known as @vinylbenjy to his thousands of followers on Instagram, Benjy has been a cornerstone of the online vinyl community for nearly a decade, sharing the pressings, the artwork, and the personal histories that make physical media so vital.

Benjy’s pick is the 1967 cultural earthquake Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band by The Beatles. Credited as the first time musicians truly created an album rather than just a set of songs, it remains a kaleidoscopic world that listeners are still getting lost in over half a century later.

Benjy takes us back to his "old soul" childhood on Long Island, where singing "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" in the shower and navigating his father's massive CD collection laid the foundation for a collection that now boasts 18 different variants of this one iconic masterpiece. Along the way we hear:

  • The Happy Accident: How a 14-year-old Benjy ordered a CD on Amazon and accidentally received a vinyl 7" instead, sparking a lifelong obsession with the format.
  • The Sitar Secret: The evolution of George Harrison’s Indian influence, from a prop on the set of Help! to the spiritual centerpiece "Within You Without You."
  • The 18-Copy Obsession: A deep dive into Benjy’s favorite pressings, including the legendary UK Mono, the Israeli stereo cut, and a rare Japanese copy with the iconic obi strip.
  • The "Day in the Life" Magic: Breaking down the speechless awe of how two unrelated song fragments were stitched together by a chaotic orchestral climax.
  • Long Island Vinyl Nights: Benji’s work building a real-world community through spinning records at a local gluten-free brewery.
  • The Beatles Tin Lunchbox: From a childhood gift at a Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil show to a daily office companion—memories that are truly portable.

For our Friday Spin Recommendation: Benjy delivers a modern-retro "starter pack" for your ears! Stick around for his top recommendations of bands keeping the 60s spirit alive:

  • The Lemon Twigs: Specifically the track "My Golden Years" from their latest album A Dream Is All We Know.
  • Tchotchke: The 60s-inspired rock powerhouse and their recent release Playin’ Dumb.

Artist Spotlight: Tom Odell — The Bridge Between Us: Our Papa-Son Journey from Long Way Down to A Wonderful Life | Another Love | Black Friday| Heal | Best Day Of My Life | When I Close My Eyes06 Feb 202600:46:29

Welcome to The Friday Vinyl Club Podcast — where every day feels like Friday and every record tells a story.

There’s a beautiful moment when your child introduces you to their music for the first time.

This is our story.

This week’s episode is a deeply personal Artist Spotlight on Tom Odell, recorded with my son Ollie.

From the day a 12-year-old Ollie flipped the script and played me “Another Love” in 2013, to our most recent night together at Manchester’s Co-op Live Arena in 2025, we reflect on how Tom’s songs have quietly marked the chapters of our lives and strengthened the Papa/Son bond between us.

We share the Ferris Bueller moment — Papa busting Ollie out of school for a London album launch (and the mild panic of getting an underage fan into the venue 😬), the creation and curation of our charity gift photo book we were blessed to present to Tom on behalf of 100 of his fans at the London Roundhouse, and a rare, light-hearted clip from a Leeds Black Friday launch where Tom improvises a song about a burger menu 🍔🎹.

We also talk about being part of the global “Tom Family” and the amazing friends we have made through Tom and his music.

Despite the arenas, the awards, and the billions of streams, Tom remains exactly what drew us in all those years ago — warm, authentic, and human.

By unanimous decision, we cheat and 2 Tom Odell records are officially welcomed into the Friday Vinyl Club.

🎧 Tune in to find out which ones - they might not be what you think — and why his journey feels so closely tied to our own.

Simple Minds - New Gold Dream | Back to Now Podcast's Iain McDermott on Glasgow’s Music Scene27 Feb 202600:58:04

Welcome to The Friday Vinyl Club Podcast — where every day feels like Friday and every record tells a story.

This episode, I’m delighted to be joined by Iain McDermott. As a pop historian and the insightful host of the Back to Now podcast, Iain has dedicated himself to unearthing the stories behind the songs that define us. Today, he joins us to bridge the gap between the past and the present, exploring how the music of his youth became the soundtrack to a lifelong obsession with pop culture.

Iain’s pick is the 1982 masterpiece New Gold Dream (81-82-83-84) by Simple Minds. Moving away from their darker post-punk roots into a shimmering, widescreen synth-pop landscape, this album didn't just define the Glasgow scene—it redefined what an 80s rock band could sound like.

Iain takes us back to a house where "music was always in the air," tracing his journey from a young listener in Scotland to a chronicler of musical history. Along the way we hear:

  • The Glasgow Pulse: How the iconic streets of Glasgow birthed a "sound of young Scotland" (Postcard Records) that eventually conquered the world.

  • A Shimmering Evolution: A deep dive into New Gold Dream, from its ethereal textures to the moment Simple Minds found their definitive, stadium-ready voice.

  • The Visual Identity: How the iconic purple-and-gold artwork and the aesthetic of the 80s was just as vital as the vinyl itself.

  • Music as a Time Capsule: Iain explains the philosophy behind his Back to Now podcast—treating every pop album and compilation as a snapshot of a moment in time.

  • The Dream Interview: Why Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys remains Iain’s ultimate "bucket list" guest—the architect of some of pop's most literate and enduring moments.

For our Friday Spin Recommendation: Iain suggests looking back to look forward!

  • The Now Yearbook Vault 82: The perfect companion piece to New Gold Dream for anyone wanting to immerse themselves in the deep cuts of the era.

Tom Waits – Swordfish Trombones: A Love Letter to Macca and Waits with Paul or Nothing host Sam Whiles | The Sgt. Pepper of the 80s | The Beatles| Kasabian West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum 13 Mar 202601:22:06

Welcome to The Friday Vinyl Club Podcast — where every day feels like Friday and every record tells a story.

This episode is a true double-feature of the heart. I’m delighted to be joined by Sam Whiles, a man who has dedicated his creative life to the altar of melody as the voice behind the Paul or Nothing podcast. While Sam is widely known for his encyclopedic devotion to Paul McCartney, today he pens a sonic love letter to the man who taught him to love the shadows: Tom Waits.

Sam’s pick is the 1983 tectonic shift SwordfishTrombones. It’s the record where Waits stopped being a "crooner" and started being an architect of the strange. For Sam, this isn't just an album; it’s the validation of the "eclectic identity," proving that you can love the pristine pop of Macca and the junkyard growl of Waits in the very same breath.

Sam takes us through his personal soundtrack—from the "black clothing" days of his youth to the intentional, meditative act of dropping the needle. Along the way we hear:

  • The Scent of the Vinyl: Sam shares his philosophy on why physical media is the only way to truly "own" these stories, creating a tangible connection between the artist’s world and our own.
  • The McCartney/Waits Parallel: How Sam’s deep dive into Paul’s solo years (especially the experimental McCartney II era) paved the way for him to embrace the fearless evolution of Tom Waits.
  • A "Day in the Life" of the Soul: Why Swordfish Trombones demands the same reverence as a masterpiece like Sgt. Pepper, requiring the listener to abandon the "shuffle" button and commit to the journey.
  • Validating the Different: A look at how Waits serves as a lighthouse for those who feel slightly out of step with the mainstream.
  • The Muse in the Machine: A tribute to Kathleen Brennan, the partner and co-writer who pushed Waits to find the beauty in the grit, much like the creative partnerships that defined the Beatles’ greatest leaps.

For our Friday Spin Recommendation: Sam delivers a modern psych-rock masterpiece for those who like their music with a cinematic edge.

  • Kasabian – West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum (2009): A sprawling, ambitious record that captures the same "anything goes" spirit of experimentation that defines Sam's musical DNA.

  • The Accidental Archivist: Jeremy reveals how a 90s radio series on The Beatles led to Enzology—the definitive 10-part Split Enz documentary—and a lifelong role managing Neil Finn’s archives and the Private Universe fan club.
  • The World Record Club: A look back at Jeremy’s early education in the "altar of melody," from learning to flip 45s at age four to the thrill of mail-order catalogs bringing Glen Campbell and Magical Mystery Tour to a quiet house in Wellington.

RAYE – My 21st Century Blues: The Sound of Independence with Laura Endler| Disney Storytelling| One Direction | From Blues to Hope | This Music May Contain Hope | Billie Eilish| Jane Austin 09 Apr 202601:01:48

Welcome to the Friday Vinyl Club Podcast, where everyday feels like Friday and every record tells a story.

In this episode, I'm joined by Laura Endler, a sociology graduate and curator of @endlersreading, to discuss a stunning force of nature record. We dive into RAYE’s independent debut, My 21st Century Blues, an album that trades radio formulas for raw, unfiltered truth. Along the way we discover:

  • The Disney & Family Foundation: How Laura’s music loving mum built a home filled with the storytelling of Aladdin the early soundtrack that taught Laura how music can change the entire emotional weight of a scene.
  • The "One Directioner" Awakening: Laura gets specific about her first musical obsession. Before the jazz and the soul, there was the era of One Direction. We discuss the buzz of buying the Up All Night CD and how 1D was the first time she chose her own musical community over the family stereo.
  • The Solo Gig Revolution: The empowering story of the Milky Chance concert. Laura shares why she stopped waiting for others and started "taking the plunge" on her own, discovering that a solo gig is the most intimate way to connect one-on-one with an artist.
  • The Mother-Daughter "Bridge" to RAYE: How Laura’s mum first introduced her to RAYE via early dance hits like "You Don't Know Me." We discuss the transition from RAYE being "pigeonholed" to the moment she broke her chains to become an independent powerhouse.
  • The "Assassination" in the Gatefold: A deep dive into the My 21st Century Blues artwork. From the "oversized heels" on the cover to the "female James Bond" scene inside the vinyl sleeve, we discuss the intentional symbols of an artist finally filling her own shoes.
  • "Hidden Track": Live at Thunderbird Stadium: Stay tuned for a special post-concert review! Recording just days after the March 27th release of RAYE’s sophomore album, "This Music May Contain Hope," Laura takes us inside her experience at the Vancouver show. We talk about the 17-track symphonic journey, the Hans Zimmer-esque staging, and why the song "Joy" (featuring RAYE's sisters) is the perfect, hopeful antidote to the "Blues" of the first record.

Laura bridges her two worlds for our Friday Spin Recommendation: literature and lyrics.

  • The Classic Read: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë—the ultimate Yorkshire entry point for new readers.
  • The Modern Mystery: The Tiger and the Cosmonaut by Edie Boudel-Tan—a contemporary BC gem.
  • The Friday Spin: "My Future" by Billie Eilish. A song that perfectly mirrors RAYE’s journey of choosing yourself and falling in love with the person you are becoming.

What’s the first album you bought with your own money? Was it a boy band classic or an independent debut? Let us know!

The Stone Roses – The Stone Roses: Filmmaker Harvey Marcus on the Records that Shaped His Lens | Leeds United & The Paris 75 Controversy| From Club Sounds to Terrace Anthems | Jazz Roots | Joyce Sims 17 Apr 202601:14:05

Welcome to The Friday Vinyl Club Podcast — where everydayfeels like Friday and every record tells a story.

In this episode, I’m joined by Harvey Marcus, a Britishindependent documentary filmmaker and a man whose work sits at the intersection of memory, identity, and high-stakes passion. Known for directing the poignant “WaterlooSunset” and the sensational “Paris 75” a cinematic documentary chronicling Leeds United Football Club's legendary 1975 European Cup final and its loyalfanbase.

Harvey joins to discuss a record that is practically theheartbeat of Northern England: The Stone Roses by The Stone Roses. We dive into an album that didn't just soundtrack a cultural shift; it defined a generation.

Along the way we hear how:

  • • A Household of Contrasts: Harvey shares the roots of his eclectic taste, from his parents’ deep-seated love for jazz to the wonderful memories of his father selling old Top of the Pops vinyl out of the back of a van.
  • • The Sibling Soundtrack: We discuss the "rebellion through rotation", the deliberate act of listening to the polar opposite of whatever his older brother was into, using music to carve out his own distinct teenage identity.
  • • The Sound of a Revolution: Harvey breaks down how The Stone Roses' 1989 debut masterfully blended rock, dance, and psychedelic influences, creating a sonic bridge that changed music for a generation.
  • • The Terrace Connection: We explore the fascinating, symbiotic relationship between football culture and music. Harvey shares how the tribal passion and communal energy of the terraces at football matches mirror the atmosphere of a packed Stone Roses gig.
  • • The "Paris 75" Journey: Harvey reveals the origin story behind his acclaimed documentary. Driven by a singular passion, he tracks down rare, rediscovered cine-film fan footage capturing Leeds United’s road to the 1975 European Cup final—a project that documents a heartbreak of historic proportions, ending in deep-seated controversy rather than the triumph his club deserved. Harvey also tells us about the Anniversary Special screenings in May 2026.

Friday Spin Recommendation For this week’s spin, Harveytakes a sharp turn from the guitar-heavy anthems to the polished, infectious rhythm of the dance floor. Joyce Sims – Come Into My Life (1987): Harvey highlights the definitive 12-inch version of this club classic that still sounds as crisp today as it did on the original pressing.

Welcome to The Friday Vinyl Club Podcast — where everyday feels like Friday and every record tells a story.

In this episode, I’m joined by Will Rew Smith, a record collector, creative soul, and the man behind the massive Nick Cave Bad Seeds 2000 Instagram community Will joins to share a record that is pure earth, grit, and soul. We dive into the quiet, powerful world of Ray LaMontagne’s debut, an album that didn't just play in the background of Will's life—it practically rewrote his future.

Along the way we hear how:

  • The Prince Obsession: Before the Bad Seeds, there was the Purple One. Will recounts his early "eBay era," hunting down rare Prince 12-inch singles and the "My Name Is Prince" picture disc. We talk about the thrill of the chase and the specific "buzz" of finding those elusive, extended versions that only existed on vinyl.

  • The Speaker Pillow: Will reveals his teenage "high-tech" ritual—listening to Trouble on a literal pillow with a built-in speaker, marinating in Ray’s gravelly vocals until he drifted off to sleep.

  • The "Switcheroo" Demos: The shocking realization that the "finished" album we all know is actually comprised of the original demos. We discuss why Ray finds it difficult to listen to his early work today and the raw, unpolished magic that makes it a classic.

  • Wedding Bells & Wild Horses: Why "Forever My Friend" remains the most emotional track for Will (having played it while signing his wedding register) and the spiritual, rolling closure of "All the Wild Horses."

  • The Last Temptation Quote: A look at the striking "Blindfolded Lady and the Devil" artwork and the hidden, powerful quote inside the sleeve that compares songwriting to turning sin into song.

    Friday Spin Recommendation

For this week’s spin, Will takes us back to a limited-edition gem that bridges the gap between soul and modern pop. Claire Maguire – Light After Dark (2011): A soulful, low-voiced power house reminiscent of London Grammar’s Hannah Reid. Will shares the story of his "green vinyl" hunt—one of only 355 copies in the world—and why the track "The Last Dance" (a tribute to Michael Jackson) remains a permanent fixture in his personal soundtrack.

Friday Spin Recommendation:

For this week’s spin, Jim shines a light on pseudo-Americana pop singer-songwriter Jenny Lewis and her track "Puppy and a Truck." Shifting away from the high-octane fusion of Jeff Beck, this tune delivers a delightfully catchy, breezy slice of indie-pop storytelling that celebrates finding unconditional love and moving forward when life gets chaotic. It's the ultimate musical palette cleanser for your Friday.
