S2 E6: Balance & Confidence with Charlotte Lodey (The Palm Tree Club)19 Aug 201900:32:50

This episode is my first ever 'proper' interview on this podcast, so please excuse the fact that the sound is far from perfect! I had a lovely sit down with Charlotte who runs a creative coaching consultancy here in Cornwall, discussing all things freelance life, balance and confidence.

Charlotte runs workshops and networking events for creatives across Cornwall, as well as doing creative coaching one-on-one with clients too. To find out more about her work, head to https://www.thepalmtreeclub.com.

S2 E5: Morning & evening routines (improve your productivity with better sleep)12 Aug 201900:15:05

It sounds dramatic, but during sleep our bodies and brains restore themselves, and if they're not able to do that properly, a whole range of issues can occur such as...

Mood swings / anxiety / depression

Microsleeping (where you fall asleep without realising - extremely dangerous if you are driving!)

Your immune system won't have time to rebuild which will leave you vulnerable to more illness

It is easier to become overweight as your hunger/fullness hormones are affected by sleep

Higher risk of Type 2 Diabetes due to higher levels of insulin in sleep depravation

Cardiovascular and blood pressure risks

Scary, right?

As you can see, lack of sleep isn't just a productivity issue. Yes, sleep depravation will reduce your functions and make you far less productive, and have a negative effect on your work, but for some reason this isn't enough reason for many people to treat it seriously!

In this podcast I'm sharing my best tips for a relaxing night time routine and high quality sleep.

S2 E4: Understanding personality types (Myers Briggs & Enneagrams)06 Aug 201900:15:59

When you discover what your personality type is, you can get a better idea of your natural strengths and weaknesses, and how your personality affects the way you work. Once you realise that actually you’re someone who naturally prefers a flexible, less-structured routine, for example, then you can change the way you were to better suit your strengths. Or if you’re finding that you’re more introverted than you thought and you’re ending up exhausted at the end of the day, perhaps you could try working from home rather than being in an open plan shared space?

Meanwhile with your Enneagram, it’s very much about what you’re motivated by, which can help you understand how to be more productive and what’s going to be the driver behind what you do. For me, I know I’m not motivated by power, or perfectionism, for example - what motivates me is maintaining my inner calm and leading a joyful life - which means I always analyse any opportunities to make sure that this will fit with my goals.

In this episode, I'll be discusses both tests and how you can use this understanding in your business.

S2 E3: How to create the perfect About page on your website22 Jul 201900:20:06

Your ‘About’ page is where your customers go to form a connection and a reason to trust you. Don’t let them down!

So many people end up writing up a lengthy essay about their childhood and biography, slap it up on their About page with a vaguely relevant image and call it a day. But the honest truth is that no one will read ever read all that.

In this episode I'm sharing my best tips from working with many freelancers over the years on their websites, to create the perfect About page!

S2 E2: Being introverted & dealing with anxiety as a freelancer (feat. Olivia Bossert)15 Jul 201900:30:17

Olivia Bossert (fashion photographer) and I sit down in this episode to talk frankly about what it's like to be self employed whilst being an introvert. We also speak about having anxiety, and while the two aren't directly related by any means, they can sometimes go hand in hand, and are both worth discussing!

Here we'll share our own experiences plus our tips for overcoming feelings of anxiety when it comes to all things freelance.

S2 E1: Why you need processes in your business08 Jul 201900:20:57

One of the best things I’ve done for my business is define ‘processes’ for everything really clearly.

It sounds a bit boring and potentially intimidating to those of you for whom staying organised is not a strong suit, but trust me when I say that having defined processes in your business will not only save you heaps of time, it will save your sanity too!

Each of these things have their own use and meaning, and are all super helpful for getting clarity around the personality of your brand and the message you're trying to get across.

In this episode I'll talk about each one, give you some examples, explain why they're useful and provide you with some tips on how to come up with your own.

S1 E5: Choosing Your Niche (FAQ Session with Olivia Bossert)18 Feb 201900:24:21

Fashion photographer and educator, Olivia Bossert (who also happens to be my closest friend and business buddy), joins me on the first FAQ Session on The Freelance Fix.

In this episode we are talking about ALL things 'niche', including why it's important to 'niche down' in your business, how to choose a niche, how to know if your niche is right, and what to do if someone else is already in your niche or if you change your mind.

Both Olivia and I have had great success from honing in on some pretty tight niches for our businesses, after several years of adjustment and exploration of what we should do, so we wanted to share our combined knowledge and experience with you!

S1 E4: What is a 'brand'? + All about 'Brand Touchpoints'11 Feb 201900:23:46

In this episode I am talking about my true passion - branding! What even IS branding and what is a brand? It's not just a logo and a colour palette, it's so much more.

I talk in depth about what it takes to create a real 'brand' and why your brand voice, brand design, and brand actions are so important for creating the business you want. As well as this, we go through what your brand touchpoints might be and how to make them consistent.

S1 E3: Target Customer Profiling - Get to Know Who You're Serving!04 Feb 201900:15:23

There’s a reason why ‘understanding your target customer’ is the first step in pretty much any business or marketing related activity. They are the key person in your business - the hero in the story your business is telling.

Did you know that in some countries, businesses are required to submit a customer profile in order to register as a legal company? Yeah, that's how important it is.

WHY IS CUSTOMER PROFILING SO IMPORTANT?

Without understanding who your customer is, it’s nearly impossible to communicate your business and market your products and services. Having a clear idea of your target customer, including their demographics, preferences, personality, background etc., means you can know:

-What publications they read so you can advertise to them
-Which social media platforms and website they spend most time on
-What types of design feels familiar and attractive to them
-How they like to be spoken to that makes them respond best
-Which events to attend to show up and sell to them
-How to tweak your products & pricing to fit them and solve their problems

In this episode I've included tips on what your Target Customer Profile should look like, plus how to get that information and data to create one.

You can download the free Target Customer CV template (with video tutorial) here:

S1 E1: Meet + Greet (My Freelance Story)20 Jan 201900:19:01

Hello and welcome to The Freelance Fix! In this episode I am taking the opportunity to properly introduce myself and explain a little about my background and 'freelance story'.

I’ve always been interested in creating my own business. Even age 10 in Primary School I was trying to start a ‘playground’ biz selling my keyring making services to my friends. When I quit my uni course in Hospitality, I thought I wanted to work in Marketing, but I soon realised I was truly passionate about working for myself.

I left my job doing marketing for a software company back in 2016, and since then have been steadily growing my website and brand design business to a place where I have a really well-balanced lifestyle that I love. This is what I talk about in more detail in this podcast episode.

Thank you so much for taking the time to listen to my first ever experience of podcasting. It's a little daunting but I'm really excited to be publishing regular episodes over the next few months. Stick around for more on the topics of marketing, branding, design, productivity and freelancing!
