In this episode, Savannah reveals to Julie a mind-blowing revelation. During a counseling session, the therapist comments that much of Savannah's current proclivities, life coping skills, and non-confrontational demeanor may have stemmed from a childhood chock full of continued attempts to keep herself safe from emotional harm and invalidation by her parents. Self-preservation is a critical and often-overlooked reason why we continue to exist as a species. Throw in gender diversity in a world that hasn't fully embraced our authenticity and the chance that our parents may withhold their unconditional love from us because we are not fitting into the right 'normal' boxes and you have a ripe recipe full of adulthood triggers and traumas. While those coping mechanisms were internally created to practically protect our younger selves way back then, those tools' relevancy and requirement in our adult lives continuing to shield and protect our inner princess child may have become outdated, dull, and may be hurting as much as it is helping.

In this episode, Savannah comes to the table with Julie with a story of detransition. Chris Beck, a United States Navy Seal, who gained public attention in 2013 after coming out as a trans woman (Kristin Beck), announced in 2022 that he would be detransitioning. Upon investigation, Savannah found an article and interview entitled, "Former Navy SEAL Trans Poster Boy Announces DeTransition: 'Transgender Ideology Is Cultish'" on the Christian Broadcast Network online media outlet. After reading the article and watching the first hour of the two-hour interview, Savannah and Julie needed to discuss the topic. While Chris' detransition is an unfortunate one, his claim that all gender-affirming care and 'the system' behind it is cultish becomes the basis of why it is so important to find the right resources, the right information, the right allies, and the most true version of one's self.  While there are some kernels of truth in the interview (needing to make sure children are not medically mangled, not relying on the first medical opinion one hears, etc.), the idea that his experience is a cumulative total sum of what all gender expansive care experiences are for every person's specific gender needs is a dangerous position to take.

From NYC's Lucky Cheng's to 'We're Here", drag and the culture it represents has been int he zeitgeist for at least the last fifty years. And, as it becomes more a part of the social narrative more and more ultra conservative lawmakers have come forward to propose state-level bills banning government funding for Story Hours, set age requirements for drag shows, or ban venue drag performances outright. While some feel our national morality is at stake, the truth is drag performers and the human being under the glitter and foundation are just as valid as everyone else.

In this episode, Savannah reminds Julie of yet another accidental reveal between her and a work vendor while she was quarantined but working from home. In the aftermath of her revealing herself in full to this work partner, Savannah was graced with a response she never would have expected. In the letter back, the vendor spoke about her own daughter being "beyond the binary" and their perchance for preferred pronouns is "whatever". In this episode, Savannah and Julie chat about the importance of crossdressng men having a solid validating support system. Sometimes, that takes the form of a loving and supportive partner. Sometimes, the intimate partner cannot or will not take on the role of a validating, guiding, and supportive "girlfriend'. Not the role of an intimate girlfriend or wife, but that of a "girlfriend" or "den mother"  who can help you with your fashion and style, be someone to lean on for bravery and confidence, and be one to emphatically chat up about all the adventures you've had. In this episode, Savannah comes to the pod with a little fire and anger in her belly. Julie has to talk her off the proverbial ledge as they dissect the re-emerging tactic of the use of the word "grooming" as it gets applied to the queer community by conservative or political groups trying to cast aspersions on members of the LGBTQIA+ community through misinformation, suppression of information and resources and equality, and the fanning of the flames of fear mongering against people they already consider require purging. How did the definition of grooming go from being an issue of hygiene to being akin to accusations of pedophilia?  And, based on this negative definition of "grooming", Savannah and Julie raise up all sorts of other ways in which the conservative masses could be considered groomers when it comes to indoctrinating each other and their youth with conspiracy theories, misinformation, religious upbringing, and cultural exposure. And, as Savannah points out, she did not have access to the internet, LGBTQ+ studies in school, public pro-pride groups, or drag queen story hours in her youth. Yet, somehow, Savannah still managed to exist.

In this episode, Savannah asks Julie to chat about what drives male-to-female crossdressers to adopt a feminine presentation. What was the spark that initially led to the first and, ultimately, ongoing experiences of femdom? Did the thoughts come from a natural subconscious space or were there extenuating circumstances that conditioned the body to use femininity as a suit of armor against certain assaults? Savannah and Julie dig a little under the surface to raise awareness and further discussion.

Examples of childhood trauma that could potentially contribute to gender dysphoria include: being forced to conform to gender stereotypes, severe gender-based bullying, physical or sexual abuse related to one's perceived gender, parental rejection of a child's gender expression, consistent misgendering, and experiences of extreme emotional neglect, particularly when tied to gender identity; essentially, any traumatic experience where a child feels deeply disconnected from their assigned gender due to societal expectations or negative interactions with others.

In this episode, Savannah tells Julie about her struggles with the seemingly simple--yet vastly complex--task of putting a flag out in one of the street-facing flowerbeds. While Savannah admits she isn't a big fan of domestic chores, yard work, or repairs, this specific task included so many nuanced dilemmas for her. Why, you ask? Because the colors of this flag weren't the red, white and blue of the unity of the country, but the symbolic baby blue, pink and white of the transgender flag. When living in a conservative state with neighbors who have already shown their colors and laid claim to their anti-LGBTQ+ perspectives, this simple display of bright colors was way more than the simple planting of a physical flag. In the end, the gesture was more symbolic... and a matter of displaying pride in the face of naysayers and to be that beacon of visibility for others looking for community.
