"Snow" by Lous MacNeice26 Dec 202200:02:39

The room was suddenly rich and the great bay-window was

Spawning snow and pink roses against it

Soundlessly collateral and incompatible:

World is suddener than we fancy it.

World is crazier and more of it than we think,

Incorrigibly plural. I peel and portion

A tangerine and spit the pips and feel

The drunkenness of things being various.

And the fire flames with a bubbling sound for world

Is more spiteful and gay than one supposes—

On the tongue on the eyes on the ears in the palms of one's hands—

There is more than glass between the snow and the huge roses.

[UNLOCKED] In the Stacks- Dubliners12 Nov 202200:48:26

With the gargantuan achievements of Ulysses and Finnegans Wake, and the revolution of A Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man, it's easy to overlook Joyce's first breakthrough: the 1914 short story collection Dubliners. Here's why you shouldn't.

[UNLOCKED] Circles: Reading and Commentary24 Sep 202201:05:08

"The eye is the first circle; the horizon which it forms is the second; and throughout nature this primary figure is repeated without end. It is the highest emblem in the cipher of the world."

In the Stacks: The Ghost26 Aug 202200:50:10

"After such knowledge what forgiveness? Think now/History has many cunning passages, contrived corridors/And issues, deceives us with whispering ambitions,/Guides us by vanities."

In all honesty, I was too lenient on Angleton; he was an evil man. But the connection between his modernist, New-Critical literary training and the way he shaped the practice of intelligence in the 20th Century remains under-analyzed. As a gesture to this end, I read T.S. Eliot's poem "Gerontion" and compared some of its lines to Angleton's life and career.

Redemption Through Sin: Reading and Commentary (Part One)13 Aug 202200:55:22

In 1666 the world was full of apocalyptic expectations. Onto this stage stepped Sabbatai Zevi, who proclaimed himself messiah. It was a new era, in which the Law was annihilated. Gershom Scholem's classic essay reevaluated the legacy of the false prophet of the 17th century. This is part 1 of 8. The Underbred James Joyce with Art of Darkness 14 Dec 202103:15:33

Kevin Kautzman and Brad Kelley were gracious enough to let me ramble a bit about the works of James Joyce on their podcast Art of Darkness (https://artofdarkpod.com/), "about the dark side of artists, creatives, intellectuals and the people who made history and continue to move culture." BK does an excellent job of providing the bio. It's a long episode, but imho the best all-around introduction to the life and work Joyce you're going to find in audio form.

The Logic of the Landscape: Heghoulian on JG Ballard (Part 1)28 Nov 202101:42:59

J.G. Ballard was the 20th-century's master of disaster, fusing surrealism, sex and science fiction to create a distinctive apocalyptic vision. Heghoulian (https://heghoulian.substack.com/) joins me to explore the first half of this prolific career.

In the Stacks #1- Transhumanism: A Grimoire of Alchemical Agendas25 Sep 202100:36:26

This recording is from 2016, a demo for a podcast that never happened, where I would have just reviewed books in the off-the-cuff manner I do here. I may do more like it in the future. I would not necessarily say the exact same things today, but I'm uploading this because all of the topics the book addresses are germane to recent and future episodes of The Forest of Symbols. You can think of this as an appendix of sorts to the main episodes.

[UNLOCKED] Vol. XIII: Mirrors Pt. 2- Narcissus (Version 2)24 Oct 202504:31:26

Spiegel Im Spiegel Im Spiegel

It has been said that it is a symbol of the imagination--or of consciousness--in its capacity to reflect the formal reality of the visible world. It has also been related to thought, in so far as thought--for Scheler and other philosophers--is the instrument of self-contemplation as well as the reflection of the universe. This links mirror-symbolism with water as a reflector and with the Narcissus myth: the cosmos appears as a huge Narcissus regarding his own reflections in the human consciousness. --J.E. Cirlot
