Out N Back Enjoy the Major Marathon Experience: Why Time Isn't Everything22 Oct 202400:07:00

🏅 Step into the dynamic world of marathon running with The Marathon Mates' engaging podcast, Out and Back, hosted by Tony from The Flying RuNR. This episode delves into the prevalent issue among runners: the intense focus on achieving a particular goal time. As major marathon events draw near, the anticipation and pressure to hit personal bests can be overwhelming.

Yet, Tony highlights the potential downsides of this obsession, urging runners to prioritize the overall experience. Imagine being three weeks away from the New York City Marathon while dealing with an unexpected health setback. The primary concern should be recovery, not merely reaching a time milestone.

Influential voices in the running community are now encouraging a paradigm shift towards enjoying the marathon journey itself. At The Flying Runner, the belief has always been 'Fun times, finish lines, not fast times.' The unpredictable nature of major marathons, with their variable weather and crowded courses, can significantly impact pacing.

By reducing the emphasis on exact time goals, runners can transform their race day into a celebration of endurance and spirit. Rather than a fixed time, consider targeting a broader time frame, allowing for flexibility and adaptability. This strategy not only enhances the enjoyment of the race but also protects against injuries and burnout.

Out & Back The Benefits of a Rest Week Five Weeks from a Marathon01 Oct 202400:04:44

Hey there everyone, it's Tony here from the Flying RuNR, and welcome to Out and Back. Out and Back is the turnaround point for your weekly running journey. Now, not by plan or design, but we have had a very light week of training just five weeks out from the New York City Marathon.

While disrupted training weeks can be frustrating, there are also benefits in them. Sometimes, well, all the time, you've really got to look for the benefits and not waste time and energy on the frustrations. Since August 2022, we've seemingly been in a constant training block, Sharon and I. Since then, we've run seven marathons, five of them being World Majors.

Including travel, we've constantly been on the go. So having a rest week, I'm not necessarily worried about the stamina to complete our next marathon. In fact, it may be exactly what we need. On this episode I share three benefits of having a lighter training week five weeks out from running a marathon:

marathon training, running tips, New York City Marathon, training recovery, mental rejuvenation, runner's adaptation, The Flying RuNR, Out and Back,

Out N Back -Cool Down After Your Run- Here's How03 Sep 202400:06:10

With the Sydney Marathon just two weeks away, we're treating it as a training run, but a bit of confidence at the starting line would be great. Today's 19-kilometer run was a real confidence booster. Afterward, I even had the energy to mow the yard and do some yard work, thanks to a proper cool-down.

Cooling down is critical for recovery and injury prevention. Here are three tips if you're struggling to recover after a run: First, don't stop abruptly. Transition to a slower pace like a light jog or brisk walk for 5 to 10 minutes to help your muscles acclimate and prevent blood pooling. Second, stretch your major muscle groups for at least 5 minutes once your heart rate decreases.

This enhances flexibility and reduces muscle stiffness, aiding faster recovery through better circulation. Lastly, rehydrate with water or an electrolyte-rich drink and consume protein within 30 minutes post-run to replenish depleted stores and support muscle repair. Thanks for tuning in to Out and Back! If you like our podcast, please subscribe and leave a review.

Out & Back Overcoming Running Challenges: The Benefits of a Running Group27 Aug 202400:07:03

Welcome to the thrilling world of the Flying Runner brought to you by the Marathon Mates! 🏃‍♂️ Hey there everyone, it's Tony here from the Flying Runner, and welcome to Out and Back, the turnaround point for your weekly running journey. Today, I ran Parkrun at my local Parkrun here at Capalaba, which celebrates its 10-year anniversary next Saturday. Now, I don't think it's a secret that since the Gold Coast Marathon, I've been a bit hampered in my running. I injured my calf during the marathon itself and then tweaked it a couple of weeks after, so it hasn't been smooth sailing since the marathon for me to get back into a running routine. So today, I made a call and went and did Parkrun with a couple of workmates who were planning to do Capalaba.I tagged along because I needed the chance to run with a group, cheer each other as we're out there over the 5K, do the high fives, encourage, and all of that. It wasn't fast, it wasn't pretty, but it was enjoyable, and it's exactly what I needed. Running with a friendly group has numerous benefits.

Out & Back Pre and Post-Workout Foam Rolling Tips for Marathon Runners20 Aug 202400:07:16

Hello, it's Tony from the Flying RuNR, and welcome to Out and Back, the turning point for your weekly running adventure. It seems like forever since I ran the Gold Coast Marathon and injured my calf, but yesterday, I finally completed a 15K easy run with Sharon.

Running with Sharon again was wonderful after training alone since Tokyo. We're now collaborating to gear up for New York, with the Sydney Marathon in between. With only four weeks to Sydney, our schedule is quite busy. We recognize the significance of structuring our training to prevent aggravating past injuries or minor issues, ensuring we're ready for New York.

Recovery, rehab, and rest are vital, and foam rollers play a significant role. Foam rollers are great for releasing muscle tension, increasing flexibility, and enhancing recovery. Here are three effective ways to use foam rollers: First, for muscle release. I typically do this most evenings, using my body weight to drive the muscle release.

Out & Back Boring is Best for Runners When Rehabbing from Injury13 Aug 202400:06:46

What a weekend it has been in the running world. We have seen so many amazing things.

As I record this, I am waiting to watch the womens marathon at the Olympics but we have witnessed the amazing Tamirat Tola win the mens marathon in a new Olympic Record of 2.06.26 on what can only be recognised as a brutal course. We had the public marathon In paras and followed some fellow marathon mates in that

We have witnessed the women's 10000m and a bronze by the legend Siffan Hassan, an incredible 1500 m with Our very own Jess Hull getting silver behind Faith Kipyegon who is a Hall of Famer and one of the greats

And then locally we had 90000 run the City to Surf in Sydney and of course the magic of the Sunshine Coast marathon weekend.

Why is boring best?

Out & Back Overcoming Calf Injuries: My Journey Back to Running06 Aug 202400:08:36

Hey there, it's Tony here from the Flying Runner, and welcome to Out and Back. Out and Back is your turnaround point for the weekly running journey. Since injuring my left calf at the Gold Coast Marathon, I've been very patient in trying to get back to running.

Yet, I've also felt incredibly frustrated because of the enforced rehab. Injuries are a part of our journey, and for some of us, calf injuries are a big part of our experience. I'm aiming for the New York Marathon this year, and it feels a bit like Groundhog Day because when I ran the New York Marathon in 2018, I had a torn calf.

These muscles can be loaded with up to seven times your body weight during running. Hence, they are incredibly tricky when we come back from injury.  Thanks for tuning in! If you like our podcast, please subscribe and leave a review.

Out & Back The Importance of Base Runs in Your Training Plan30 Jul 202400:06:40

Hey there everyone, it's Tony here from the Flying Runner, and welcome to 'Out and Back' – the turning point for your weekly running journey. This week, we faced some challenging news as Sharon has been advised to rest her feet and stop running for four weeks due to bursitis in her toes. With the Sydney Marathon just seven weeks away, this is a tough situation. However, it's best to address the issue now to give us the best chance to fix the problem before it impacts our preparation for New York. As a result, I'm back to training by myself while Sharon focuses on walking only. On Saturday, I set off for a base run of 13 kilometers, followed by a slow 5K on Sunday to wind down. Personally, I find base runs essential in my training block as they provide a gauge of my fitness and endurance levels. Unlike traditional base runs, which are moderate intensity and form the foundation of training plans, my approach includes using them as starting points and indicators of progress throughout the training block. Base runs help develop aerobic capacity and endurance through consistency. Whether you use them as foundational runs or regular moderate-intensity runs, including base runs in your training plan is crucial. Share your experiences with base runs in the comments and join the growing Flying Runner community. Thanks for tuning in! If you enjoy our podcast, please subscribe and leave a review to help others find us. Watch out for our full episode this Friday, where we'll discuss our plans for the remainder of the year.———————————————————————————————-Read how CurraNz improves performance. https://flyingrunr.com/2024/07/21/enhance-your-performance-with-curranz/ Special one-time code available to trial FLYINGRUN20Please like and subscribe and don’t forget to share with your friends and familyWebsite - https://flyingrunr.com/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/flyingrunr Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@FlyingRuNR/ ———————————————————————

Out and Back: Kickstart Your Marathon Training: Tips for Consistency and Recovery23 Jul 202400:08:01

Welcome to the Flying RuNR, brought to you by the Marathon Mates! 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️ This week marks the beginning of a new training plan for Tony and Sharon as they prepare for the New York Marathon. Training together is something they've both been looking forward to, but it also comes with its challenges.

Starting a new training block can be tough, especially in the early stages when consistency is more important than intensity. This podcast talks you through some key points they are focusing on to kickstart their new training block:

  • Establishing a regular running routine is crucial.

  • Prioritizing recovery and listening to your body is another essential aspect.

  • Enjoyment and motivation play a significant role in their training journey.

In summary, prioritizing consistency over intensity, especially in the early stages of a new training plan, is crucial. Building a solid foundation reduces injury risk and promotes a sustainable running habit. Regular routine, recovery, and enjoyment are key factors in their training approach.

Out And Back - Vary Your Running Routines for Better Muscle Engagement16 Jul 202400:07:14

Welcome to the Flying Runner, brought to you by the Marathon Mates! 🏃‍♂️🏃‍♀️ Hello, it's Tony here from the Flying Runner, welcoming you to Out and Back – your weekly running journey's turning point. Today, let's discuss an important yet often neglected topic: the significance of varying our running routes and terrains. 🌍 Reflecting on the Berlin Marathon in 2023, many appreciated its flat course. However, Taro pointed out how the repetitive strain on the same muscle groups over 26.2 miles impacted her hips. This observation led me to consider the potential drawbacks of repetitive running routines. 🦵 We often stick to familiar routes, becoming creatures of habit. But this can result in muscle imbalances and injuries. So, how can we introduce variety to enhance our running experience? Exploring new terrains is a fantastic start. Trail running, for example, engages different muscles compared to road running. 🌲 Running on trails, tracks, sand, and grass presents unique challenges that contribute to a comprehensive training regimen. Hill training fortifies your glutes, quads, and calves, while downhill running engages your core and hones your technique. 🏔️ Besides physical benefits, varying your runs can invigorate your mind. New running environments offer mental stimulation and motivation, making long runs more enjoyable. 🧠 Incorporating diverse training methods into your plan is essential. Whether focusing on speed or endurance, variety prevents muscle adaptation and fosters continuous growth. If you have a regular route, try running it in reverse for a fresh perspective and new challenges. 🔄 Sharon and I love compass runs, starting from a central point and exploring different loops. This approach keeps our runs intriguing and helps us discover new areas. Interval training and fartlek sessions are excellent for building speed and endurance. Embrace hills as part of your training instead of avoiding them. 🏞️ By diversifying your routines and habits, you'll engage different muscle groups, making you a stronger and more resilient runner. Thanks for tuning in! If you enjoy our podcast, please subscribe and leave a review. It helps others find us. Stay tuned for our next full episode this Friday.———————————————————————————————-Please like and subscribe and don’t forget to share with your friends and familyWebsite - https://flyingrunr.com/ Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/flyingrunr Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@FlyingRuNR/ —————————————————————————-
