Down goes FAU Basketball's winning streak21 Feb 202500:48:54

It was a frustrating setback late night at the Elly. Florida Atlantic basketball's five-game surge is over at the hands of Wichita State and Ken LaVicka is here to talk about it. Two different second half sequences spelled doom for FAU, while sketchy officiating helped finish the Owls off. Also, John Jakus' perfect word to describe his team's start to the game and why it speaks to a bigger picture hurdle for the Florida Atlantic program. Ken gives a tribute to the ultra-niche, ultra-excellent Seinfeld night. Finally, in a college football world where programs are canceling spring games out of arrogance...or paranoia...FAU Football is making theirs more unique and even more fan-friendly.

One hell of a homestand for FAU Basketball04 Feb 202500:44:12

You have to sit down and catch your breath after that FAU Basketball homestand. After delivering a pair of 20-point beatings, the Owls suddenly look the most consistent they have all season and Ken LaVicka discusses all of it. Over the past week, Florida Atlantic accomplished something it hadn't since the Final Four season. Also, choose your feel-good breakout: KyKy Tandy, Matas Vokietaitis, Nico Moretti? Baba Miller hit a milestone this past week that only he has accomplished in all of college basketball season, and in addition to that, Ken explains why he was most impressed with something not actually done on the floor this week but, instead, by something Nico admitted to him after the USF win. And yes, Matas is the Freshman of the Year favorite in the AAC, but it's tight. Ken gives a breakdown of who is challenging him for the award.

Herman's shake up: Bellantoni & Warriner out11 Nov 202400:30:01

Perhaps the biggest downside of a losing college football season is the inevitability that staff changes are likely to be made. That moment has arrived at FAU. Tom Herman's announcement that he's parting ways with defensive coordinator Roc Bellantoni & OL coach Ed Warriner is exiting the program are the first major consequences of a lost season that drew its last breath at East Carolina. Ken LaVicka breaks down the moves and the tangible numbers that may have led to Herman deciding that the "identity" of the defense needed to change.

The Day After: East Carolina pillages FAU, season is lost08 Nov 202400:55:37

2024 is officially a lost season for Florida Atlantic. In the most punishing way possible, FAU was mathematically eliminated from the postseason by an East Carolina team that was just much better. Also lost in the game, Cam Fancher, who deserves a lot of respect. Now...a lot of questions about how to navigate the final three weeks: What (and who) needs to be prioritized? What is the future of the quarterback position? Will players check out? What is there to play for? Ken LaVicka address his perspective on all of those in a sober evaluation of the Owls' night in Greenville...and the season to this point.

The Day After: A blowout, then postgame beef; USF humbles FAU02 Nov 202400:29:42

Where does FAU Football go from here? Another 2nd half crumbling, this time at the hands of USF, who made sure it hurt. There's no doubt about this game's post-mortem, the defense in the final two quarters was a no-show. Not only did the defense never come back out of the halftime locker room, but it was demoralized into submission. And now that FAU needs to go perfect the rest of the way to become bowl eligible, it's likely time to start re-calibrating what constitutes a season "win" the rest of the way. Also, yes, the handshake drama between Tom Herman and Alex Golesh has become a major story. Ken explains why, ultimately, that testy exchange is validation for FAU.

From fostering personal relationships with his players and staff, to creating a cohesive environment for his players to become close with their new teammates, to using extremely detailed approaches to meet individual coaching needs, to understanding that he's not the smartest guy in the room, to admitting FAU, while necessary, overdid it in creating the schedule, Jakus creates a fascinating picture of an elite program at a transition in a revealing sit-down with Ken LaVicka.

The Day After: Zero passing game at UTSA, FAU bowl door closing20 Oct 202400:55:17

Once again, FAU was competitive, the defense was opportunistic...and the passing game didn't show up. That exact scenario has reared its ugly head too many times in 2024, which is why FAU's bowl hopes are diminishing to troubling lows. What's the overlying issue? The passing game, which is on pace to be one of the worst in Florida Atlantic's FBS history. Ken looks at why the Owls were unable to find a way to win at UTSA, why the passing issues are so daunting and what's upcoming if FAU wants to try to find some traction and ply a path towards bowl eligibility. The season is far from over, but bowl hopes are hanging by a thread and the offensive issues are numerous and complex.

The Day After: FAU falls apart vs. North Texas13 Oct 202400:44:01

How? Why? It all happened so fast. FAU looked like it had North Texas beaten, but instead, it's a full week of "what if?" after watching a 10-pt lead with 2:38 left disappear. FAU wasted winning efforts across the board, but the losing efforts in the final 4:21, on both sides of ball, spelled doom for the Owls. Ken LaVicka points out all of the losing plays in the final 4:21 that cost FAU a signature win and a big program boost. Also, how does Florida Atlantic re-group going into UTSA? In addition, Ken makes a very specific observation about FAU's schedule the rest of the way.

That time FAU played a home game vs. Michigan St....in Detroit27 Aug 202400:23:34

In 2010, FAU had a decision to make. Find a venue to "host" their football game against Michigan State, or lose a significant pay day. FAU decided to go with the former, but with their usual home stadium out of the question, the powers-that-be in Boca needed to get creative...and did they ever. Former FAU Athletics marketing guru Dexter Lamont and former Senior Associate AD (now currect UCF AD) Terry Mohajir tell Ken the story of why, and how, FAU hosted Michigan State in Detroit. From moving to Michigan, to cold-calling rich NBA owners to Howard Schnellenberger flying in a middle seat in coach...this one has it all.

Why new AAC commissioner Tim Pernetti deserves a HUGE apology11 Jul 202400:32:50

With new, massive financial obligations coming to college athletics in the coming years, new AAC commissioner Tim Pernetti offered a solution to help the league weather the storm. His words, however, were misrepresented by a sports law journalist, leading to a firestorm of criticism from fans of conference schools, including a chorus of "Get us out of this league!" from the old guard fans of USF, Memphis, Tulane and East Carolina. Pernetti, however, not only had his words misconstrued, Ken also believes that what he proposed was extremely smart. He needs an apology. Also...Ken wants to reassure FAU fans that they can still say..."FAU".

The computers LOVE FAU Football in 202408 Jul 202400:33:16

Last year was a disappointing one for FAU Football, but the preseason ESPN FPI paints a much better picture for Florida Atlantic fans. The predictive model, with a much easier schedule than 2023, gives FAU a very real chance of bowl eligibility...and maybe even more! Factor in FAU's FPI rank, the FPI rank of its opponents, a favorable non-conference AND league slate, not to mention a little luck that the Owls didn't have last year and an FAU bowl game is very much in the cards. Also, college football's best predictive formula in 2023 thinks that FAU will have Michigan State on Week 0 and Week 1's biggest upset alert. Finally, congrats to Michigan State on its...not to traditional national championships.
