#214 Cash on the Couch—Why Payment Is Part of Therapy

Episode 214

mardi 6 janvier 2026Duration 30:46

What if the way you pay is part of the therapy? Some psychoanalytic therapists ask for cash after each session—not for convenience, but because money itself reveals emotional truth. Forgetting to pay, overpaying, or haggling can uncover hidden dynamics worth exploring. Vessy explains how two sessions a week can go far deeper than one and why honest talk about fees is as essential as discussing feelings. When money enters the room, therapy gets real—and that’s where lasting change begins.

#213 The Moment the Brain Says “Oh… That’s Not True Anymore

Episode 213

mardi 30 décembre 2025Duration 31:39

Real change with money isn’t about willpower—it’s about the brain rewriting old rules. In this conversation, Rick and financial therapist Emily Shull explore how memory reconsolidation and IFS work together to transform money behavior. Emily explains the four elements of deep change and shares a powerful client story where a childhood belief about money secrecy dissolved, leading to honest communication instead of avoidance. It’s a clear, emotionally intelligent look at how understanding the brain can free us from outdated money patterns.

#204 Why Earning More Isn’t the Cure for Underearning

Episode 204

mardi 26 août 2025Duration 30:11

Joetta Johnson returns with Rick Kahler to dive deep into the emotional and subconscious roots of underearning. Sharing her personal transformation and the development of her “Earning Power” program, Joetta unpacks how limiting beliefs, especially those rooted in authority figures, time scarcity, and undervaluing oneself, can sabotage financial progress, even after income increases. She challenges the hustle narrative, emphasizing that true earning power includes the capacity to hold, not just generate, money. Through tools like hypnosis and time-mapping, Joetta helps clients rewire the subconscious mind to support sustainable financial growth. Her work bridges self-worth, wealth accumulation, and the emotional healing necessary to break free from old money patterns.

#112 - The Shocking Challenge of the Financially Unequal Relationship

Episode 112

mardi 20 juin 2023Duration 26:13

References to income and wealth inequality generally focus on how unevenly income and wealth are distributed throughout a population. The greater the gap between those at the top and the bottom, the more problematic it can be to the social health of a country. In a marriage or committed relationship, income and wealth inequality between partners also present some challenges that don’t exist where the partners are financial equals. One of the biggest stressors isn’t what you might think.

#111– The Challenges of Aligning Our Money With Our Values

Episode 111

mardi 13 juin 2023Duration 27:36

Bringing alignment of your stated values with your money is something I’ve been promoting for over 20 years. They don’t always align. It’s not unusual for a person to embrace a value that is not fully embraced in their spending. A person who is concerned about climate change and a strong proponent of individuals, corporations, and governments to “go green”, will avoid purchasing items like coffee in paper cups, tea bags, water in plastic bottles, aerosols, chlorine bleaches, using disposable cutlery from fast food restaurants, plastic bags, and or using oil-based transportation, which are some of the biggest sources of environmental damage.

#110 – Hidden Fees, Hidden Emotions

Episode 110

mardi 6 juin 2023Duration 29:43

In his state of the union address, President Biden announced he is “taking on junk fees” which are the hidden fees involved with many of the services we purchase. Hidden fees and terms have been around a long time.  The old adage of, “Read the fine print,” is timeless advice.  I love the quote by Pete Seeger, American folk singer, “Do you know the difference between education and experience?  Education is what you get when you read the fine print; experience is what you get when you don’t.”  Let’s talk about those experiences.
