July 25, 2025: Michigan State landed its first high school recruit for the 2026-27 season with 6’0” point guard Carlos Medlock, Jr.  Medlock played his first three years at Wayne Memorial High School where he started all of them. He will be playing his senior year in Missouri at Link Academy.

Although Medlock was not heavily recruited last year he has blasted up the charts and received high major offers from teams all round the country. MSU was first and then the next day Michigan. In the Addidas circuit he is averaging 21.1 ppg and shooting 47/36/79.

May 22, 2025: Today’s the finale of our Big Ten Recap where we talk about the top of the standings of the Big Ten. We review Purdue, Wisconsin, UCLA, Michigan, and Maryland. As we all know, MSU lapped the field in the Big Ten this year but the top was in doubt as teams like back to back champ Purdue showed signs of competing at the top and Wisconsin had a very surprising run exceeding most analysts’ expectations largely on the back of John Tonje.

For MSU fans, Michigan was an extremely frustrating team that despite their poor metrics and negative point differential found a way to win virtually every close game and even the Big Ten Tournament and even made the Sweet 16 after a colossally bad prior year. First year coach Dusty May may have shown his true colors in the dust up at the Breslin with his game ending logo defense.

Although it’s not surprising to see coaching departures, Kevin Willard leaving Maryland for Villanova certainly wasn’t on our bingo cards. Apparently, behind the scenes problems with the athletic department bubbled up and he took off after easily his most successful season with the Terps.

October 13, 2024: Michigan State visited Marquette, MI today to take on Tom Izzo's alma mater, Northern Michigan, in a rare early preseason exhibition game. Another signature event scheduled by the Spartans as they played in the Superior Dome where Izzo's number was retired earlier.

As for the game, despite being one of the better teams in the D2 GLIAC, NMU wasn't able to really put up much resistance falling to the Spartans 70-53. MSU didn't look too sharp but did some things well especially on defense. Also, it looks like Zapala will be the starting center for the time being.

October 11, 2024: Thursday evening, Virginia 4* high school recruit, Jordan Scott, committed to Michigan State. Scott is a 6'7" wing who ranks inside the top 75 in most recruiting rankings. He is talented and versatile where he has played positions 1-5 on his AAU team in the UnderArmor circuit. Scott is a winner and comes from great college basketball pedigree as both his parents played high level D1 basketball.

The Spartans head to Marquette, MI to take on head coach Tom Izzo's alma mater, the Northern Michigan WIldcats. In addition to the exhibition, Izzo will be honored at the game having his number retired. This will be the first opportunity to watch the Spartans since their overseas trip to Spain this summer.

October 9, 2024: Head coach, Brad Underwood, just had his most successful season at Illinois leading the Illini to a Big Ten Tournament championship, second place in the Big Ten regular season, and a trip to the Elite 8. Although it seems Underwood has struggled to maintain a core of recruits to stick around Champaign more than a few years, he has had a number of successful years of play.

Last year the Illini were carried by the all everything Terrance Shannon. The season for Illinois looked to be in trouble when Shannon was suspended by the University because of sexual misconduct allegations in Lawrence, KS. Fortunately for Shannon and the team, he was able to successfully sue for an injunction on his suspension and was returned to the team after only a 6 game absence.

So Illinois will again lose almost its entire team and will have to rebuild largely with transfers. However, the crown jewel is a freshman recruit from Lithuania, Kasparas Jackucionis. Jackucionis is expected to be a first round draft pick ext year in the NBA draft so a lot is riding on how well he performs.

October 7, 2024: Ohio State finally parted ways with Chris Holtman last season after many years of underperformance. There's definitely patience at a football school like Ohio State but it isn't unlimited. A general lack of success and missing the tournament multiple years in a row led to his dismissal.

Surprisingly, the Buckeyes ended up hiring interim coach, Jake Diebler, who had quite a bit of success to close out the Big Ten season last year. But he remains an unknown quantity in the coaching ranks and only time will tell whether the hire was a good bold move or a mistake. Per usual, on paper the Buckeyes aren't lacking for talent but the question remains whether they will be able to finally get it together.

October 3, 2024: The expressions "dumpster fire, clown show, apocalypse" to describe last year's season for the Wolverines probably all work. Michigan had their worst finish in 60 years and a number of really weird circumstances.

Head coach Juwan Howard started the season recovering from a heart surgery and while serving as an assistant coach got tossed from a game. Howard got into some sort of altercation with the team's strength and conditioning coach leading to him leaving the school. Point guard Dug McDaniel had academic struggles leading to a bizarre 6 week suspension of him playing in away games.

And then Michigan won only 3 games putting them dead last in the Big Ten. It was a year that the dozen or so UM basketball fans will do their best to forget.

September 30, 2024: The 2023-24 season was obviously a disappointment for the Scarlet Knights as they failed to make the tournament for the second straight year. It wasn't entirely unexpected with the loss of Paul Mulcahy and Cam Spencer to the transfer portal.

However, Rutgers made a huge splash by early Spring where it became clear that they were going to land two top 5 high school recruits in Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey. (To put it in perspective, MSU has only had one class with 2 top 5 recruits in recent memory with Zach Randolph and Marcus Taylor.) It was widely believed with those two "one and dones" amongst a veteran lineup headed by Cliff Omoruyi that this could be a very special team.

Unfortunately for Steve Pikiell and the Knights, essentially the entire team departed in the portal including Omoruyi. This has left the team without any core of returning players and will now have to rely heavily on these talented freshmen and hope to get lucky on a transfer or two.

September 26, 2024: Last year second year head coach, Kevin Willard, and the Terrapins had a season they'd like to forget. Despite bringing back some key veterans and picking up highly rate recruits, the team took a turn for the worse last year. Nearly elite defense was negated by an abysmal offensive presence especially outside the 3 point line. 

In only his third year, Willard certainly isn't on the hot seat but another disappointing year at a school that cares about basketball might make next year a bit toasty under his derrierre. As with most teams in the conference, there is a lot of uncertainty with the team's roster as transfers will have to make up what was lost in starters last year.
