Strengthen Your WHY, Transform Your Journey18 Nov 202500:29:03

A warm, encouraging reset on identity, habits, and motivation.

Episode #232

Your habits aren't random — they're shaped by the identity you carry and the WHYs that keep you moving forward. In this special Bitesize collection, Terri revisits powerful insights on motivation, identity, and the real reasons we follow through when things get tough. These reflections are the perfect reset for anyone wanting to reconnect with their goals.

In this curated Bitesize episode, Terri brings together three foundational teachings on identity, habit-building, and meaningful motivation. She explores how seeing yourself as a healthier person shapes your choices, why your WHY needs depth (and sometimes quantity!), and how to work with your brain when barriers show up. This warm and practical set of reflections is designed to help you reset your mindset and strengthen your commitment as you move into a new season of your health journey.

What you'll learn:

  • Why identity is the foundation of sustainable habit change
  • How to align daily choices with the healthier person you're becoming
  • The importance of developing multiple WHYs — even a list of 100
  • How your brain uses barriers and excuses to derail progress
  • Practical examples of how stronger WHYs can override old habits
  • Encouragement for evolving your WHYs as your journey and goals shift

The Cancer Code: Dr. Jason Fung on Insulin, Fasting, and Cancer Prevention11 Nov 202500:35:21

In this special Q&A episode, Dr. Jason Fung joins TFM Coach Lisa and Community Mentor Patrice Michael to revisit The Cancer Code — five years after its release. Together, they explore how modern science is reframing cancer not as a disease of random genetic "bad luck," but as an evolutionary and metabolic condition deeply connected to insulin, diet, and lifestyle.

Dr. Fung explains how hyperinsulinemia, obesity, and processed foods create fertile "soil" for cancer to grow — and how fasting and nutritional strategies can help restore metabolic balance. He also discusses the link between hormones and cancer risk, new non-radiation screening technologies, and how combining traditional treatments with metabolic interventions may shape the future of cancer care.

Episode #231

🧭 Listener Questions Include:

  1. What does current research say about fasting's potential role in cancer prevention, particularly for individuals with family histories of cancer?
  2. How do insulin, IGF-1, and mTOR influence cancer risk — and what information exists comparing ketogenic versus plant-based diets for prevention and overall health?
  3. For someone with a significant family cancer history (including aggressive cases in young adults), what non-radiation screening or imaging technologies are available?
  4. Do bioidentical hormone replacement therapies increase cancer risk, and can fasting help reduce that risk?
  5. What's your view on combining traditional treatments with metabolic interventions?
  6. Can you tell us about your upcoming book, The Hunger Code?
  7. If the cancer research community fully embraced your paradigm, what would be the top three research priorities?

💡 Key Takeaway

"Cancer isn't just a disease of bad luck — it's a disease of metabolism. By changing the soil through fasting and nutrition, we can change the outcome."

Fasting Q&A with Dr Jason Fung: Magnesium, Vinegar, Dawn Phenomenon, and More16 Sep 202500:28:15

Episode #223

In this Fasting Q&A episode, hosted by Coach Lisa Chance, Dr. Jason Fung answers questions from the TFM Community:

1. I am a healthy 46-year-old working to improve my sleep, so I want to take magnesium bisglycinate. My magnesium supplement actually contains 7 forms of magnesium, which is very convenient, but is it better to just take one form in one capsule for absorption or any other reason? [01:23]

2. Two-part question on TFM's Fat Fasting

One: Vinegar is not on the list, but you have mentioned that we can eat salads. Would it be okay to make a dressing with a healthy oil and vinegar during a Fat Fast?

Two: I've seen some mention to only eat 3-4 of the allowed foods on a fat fast. Is this an alternative manner to step up one's game during a fat fast? [03:58]

3. I just read about a study on stem cell research.  Could you elaborate further what this may mean for those with pancreas, liver, or kidney issues? [08:11]

4. Are there any research-based studies that fasting helps lower cholesterol? [09:55]

5. I'm on day four of a water fast and I am noticing a metallic taste in my mouth. Is this unusual? Why does it happen? [13:46]

6. I have various autoimmune conditions and it was suggested I consider going on LDN (low dose naltrexone), and that this can also help with weight loss. I'm wondering what your thoughts are on LDN for weight loss and, if I decided to start it, how I would incorporate it into my fasting schedule. [16:09]

7. What is the difference between The Dawn Phenomenon and Feet-to-Floor Syndrome? From what I can find they both cause a rise in morning blood sugar, one due to circadian rhythm and the other due to a stress response from getting the day started. Is there a different eating/fasting protocol that is best for one over the other, and how do you know which one you are experiencing? [18:14]

8. Is kidney disease the cause of interstitial cystitis and how do you treat it? [21:05]

9. I have high uric acid and also the APOE 4-4 gene. Would the 3T of lime juice recommended for high uric acid affect the neural autophagy I use as a prevention for the dementia risk? What is the best way to navigate fasting with these two needs? [21:59]

10. Are there any dangers to keeping blood sugars in a consistently low range (50-60's mg/dl) if no symptoms of hypoglycemia are felt? [24:55]

11. In some fasting groups on-line, they are big into breaking fasts with watermelon and fruit juices. How do you feel about breaking fasts with these things? [25:39]

Fasting Q&A: IBS, Raised Cholesterol, Fat-Loss Maintenance, Busting Plateaus, and Erythritol09 Jan 202400:30:13

Episode #134

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Nadia answers some of your fasting questions:

1. I have IBS-C and a gluten sensitivity, along with ever changing hormones as I am perimenopausal. I'm trying to find the best regimen to help. Of course weight loss would be nice but my main goal is to rid myself of abdominal pains, severe constipation, and nausea. [01:43]

2. My mom has type 2 diabetes  and is taking Metformin. I have convinced her to do at least 16 hours of fasting a day and she has been doing this for 5 months or so. She says her glucose levels are much more stable but her cholesterol has gone up. Should she worry? [09:21]

3. Once you have reached your fat-loss goal, how do you transition to a maintenance schedule without gaining back the weight? And what would a good fat-loss maintenance schedule be? [15:10]

4. I started fasting about a year and a half ago with a very mixed schedule and was successful in losing about 25 lbs in 8 months. Since then I've been at a plateau for another 8 months. I find it hard to not eat at least once per day. What are your thoughts on ADF with the 500 cal vs without the 500 cals? [17:35]

5. I don't think I've heard you discuss the sweetener erythritol. I realize that it may still not be great for sugar cravings, but does it affect insulin? If I had a small amount in my tea, would it break my fast? I've seen conflicting messages? [25:16]

Fasting Q&A: Food Quality, Plant-Based Diets, and Fiber12 Dec 202300:21:38

Episode #127

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Nadia answers some of your fasting questions:

1. What are your thoughts on food quality? Should I try and eat grass-fed meats and organic vegetables? How important is it to switch to this top-quality food alongside fasting? [02:21]

2. Is bacon a processed meat? Is having non grass-fed bacon ok because, here in India, we can't get grass-fed bacon? [05:41]

3. Do you have any tips for fasting on a vegetarian diet? My partner is a vegetarian and I am interested in cutting out meat also, but I am not sure about the nutritional value of meat substitutes like tofu and other plant-based proteins. [07:28]

4. I would love to hear more about fasting with a plant-based diet. I don't avoid fruit or below-ground veggies. I eat nuts and seeds, but no dairy. I have cut out most highly processed foods and I am doing TRE, usually a 16-18 hour fast. There is so much conflicting information about diet! [09:57]

5. I follow a high-fat, low-carb diet on my eating days. I seem to struggle to keep my carbs low while trying to get in my daily fiber. I try to eat as much high-fiber food as possible (like avocados, chia seeds, and vegetables) at each meal. How do you add fiber to your diet while staying low-carb? Should I consider fiber supplements? [13:59]

6. Being that fiber helps to slow the digestion of sugars and fats (therefore decreasing blood glucose spikes), would you recommend taking a daily fiber supplement? What about when fasting? Does it technically break a fast even though the body is not digesting it? [18:15]

Fasting Q&A: Feeling Cold, Night Sweats, Gestational Diabetes, and Eating During Pregnancy21 Nov 202300:28:12

Episode #121

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Nadia answers some of your fasting questions:

1. I used to do 16-8 IF and have now started doing ADF. How can I avoid malnutrition doing this new pattern? [01:45]

2. I am planning on doing 24-hour fasts three days a week for fat loss. For this schedule, you typically recommend (on eating days) to still fast 16 hours and only eat two meals. But, on my eating days, would it be better to not fast at all and eat three meals to keep up my metabolism? If not, how do I maintain my metabolism during this process? [08:08]

3. I am doing three 42-hour fasts a week. On my fasting days, every time I reach 24 hours into my fast, I start feeling cold. What is the process behind that reaction?

I've also found that since I started fasting eight weeks ago, my perimenopause symptoms have increased, namely I experience more and more severe night sweats. Is this just a coincidence or could fasting be increasing these symptoms. [14:06]

4. I started my fasting journey after listening to your podcast, which I love. I'm now up to 24 hours three times a week and looking forward to doing longer ones soon!

My question for you is about gestational diabetes. I've had it with both of my kids and was told that eating healthy has nothing to do with getting it. I'm curious what you think about this. I'm determined to get healthy through fasting to prevent T2D in the future and am hoping to prevent gestational diabetes as well as pre eclampsia (I had hypertension with my first and pre eclampsia with my second!) Is there a way to prepare my body to prevent either of these with my next pregnancy. [20:41]

5. Do pregnant women have to eat more than three good meals a day? I get full so quickly and I'm not sure I can eat more than three meals a day. I normally ate two meals a day when I fasted before pregnancy. [25:05]

Bitesize: $1M Motivation Analogy10 Nov 202300:10:56

Episode #118

In this Bitesize episode, Terri shares a motivation story to help you really hone in on the WHYs that will keep you focused on changing your behavior patterns and, ultimately, reach your goals.

Experience has probably shown most of us that without very clear reasons to choose behaviors that may be challenging or inconvenient, we typically resort to falling back into the old patterns or shortcuts that never allow us to reach our goals and instead leave us feeling defeated.

What is your $1M WHY or collection of WHYs that motivate you to take the challenge, do the steps, or forego a convenience?

Fasting Q&A: Heartburn, Cramps, Bad Breath, Rosacea, and Body Odor24 Oct 202300:34:34

Episode #113

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Nadia answers some of your fasting questions:

1. I get heartburn in the afternoon/evening when I am doing an extended fast (24-48hr). Any suggestions on what might help? [02:06]

2. I've always had a lot of charley horse type of leg cramps and abdominal muscle cramps. usually these happen more when I'm doing a low-carb diet. However, when I'm fasting these muscle cramps happen far more frequently. The cramps seem to improve and not be as frequent if I am well hydrated but they get worse if I drink a lot of coffee and also of I drink wine on my eating days. Should I be adding more salt perhaps? [07:50]

3. I get restless legs (and arms) most nights when I am trying to get to sleep. Someone suggested taking magnesium. Might this help? [10:40]

4. I get really bad breath when I am fasting. I'm now a bit paranoid about kissing my partner. Help! [21:23]

5. I have rosacea that is managed by diet (not eating certain things) and careful skin care. When I hit 24-26 hours into my fasts, my rosacea goes crazy! My face is red hot, and my skin is bumpy - it's as bad as if I had eaten hot peppers. It usually lasts 2-3 hours and then goes away. My esthetician says maybe it was an allergy to the green tea I drink in the evenings, but I switched out teas and even cut it out  and it still happened. Fasting is the only consistent thing that causes this flare up and it can't be a coincidence. Any idea why this happens? [28:01]

6. I have terrible body order coming from my armpits when I fast. I've had to buy special odor-eliminating laundry detergent to get rid of the smell from my clothes. Do you think its just part of fasting and losing weight? I've heard of fat holding estrogen. Is it releasing that IVF estrogen finally (approx 5 years previous) or is it just a perimenopausal changing hormones thing? I don't think the latter because it began when I started ADF again and I don't smell on eating days. [23:58]

Though there are physiological and practical things to consider ("Have I eaten enough?" or, "Am I eating things that drive my hunger?"), Terri encourages listeners to work on their mindset about what makes a meal as well as sticking to only eating meals.

Fasting Q&A: Eating and Fasting Patterns for Kids, Fasting After Weight-Loss Surgery, Bloating, and More19 Sep 202300:44:38

Episode #103

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Nadia answers some of your fasting questions:

1. I have two preschool aged children and I really want to set them up for life with a healthy relationship with food. Obviously, I don't think we should fast children but  I have noticed that their lives revolve around their mealtimes and snacks. Is TRE something that would benefit them? At what age should we implement this? [03:21]

2. I have 12 and 16-year-old girls. There are so many body image influences out there. I am concerned if they see me doing extended fast that they will not understand why I am doing it or that they might develop an eating disorder. [13:16]

3. My daughter is 13 years old, tall, slender and active/a multi-sport athlete with no weight-related concerns. She started her period about 6 months ago and luckily it's been pretty regular and she's managing it very well. The only hormonal issue I'm noticing so far is that she's struggling pretty badly with acne on her face and upper back. I just want her to be happy and healthy and to fuel her body appropriately, especially during all these hormonal changes her body is going through. [22:42]

4. My wife says she can't fast with me because she had weight loss surgery (about two years ago). She would like to do low carb/keto-ish/fasting with me but says she can't eat enough in a meal to last her 5 or 6 hours. Is there a protocol for fasting with a smaller stomach or it is not recommended? [30:07]

5. When I fast for 36 hours (which up to now has been my longest fasting period) I gain five pounds during the day when I start eating again. I feel bloated and very unwell. I suspect it is water retention as it goes away on the next day. Is this normal? [35:20]

6. My question relates to a previous episode where Nadia mentioned that the smell of food can cause an insulin response. As someone who has insulin resistance and happens to be a professional chef, that news was alarming! Is this actually the case, or did I hear that wrong? [38:34]

Megan and Terri encourage listeners to focus on the current times and build toward the future rather than get overwhelmed by upcoming holidays and transitions in a few more months.

Fasting Q&A: Calorie Deficit, Vegan Keto, Acronyms, Cooking Oils (REPLAY)22 Aug 202300:28:34

Episode #95 (#26)

SUMMER BREAK

Megan, Nadia, and Terri are taking a summer break during August but didn't want to leave you without something to listen to so they have chosen some great episodes to replay.

In this Fasting Q&A episode, Megan and Nadia answer your fasting questions:

1. Does fasting for fat loss still require a caloric deficit? [01:08]

2. I've had success eating keto (traditional) with IF, and I've had success with a vegan diet (not keto) until I started relying too much on carbs like beans, rice, and potatoes. Do you think a vegan keto diet is a realistic way to eat while incorporating IF? [09:01]

3. I've heard a few acronyms that I don't recognize: PCOS, CGM and IBS (although IBS is more common and not specific to fasting). For those used to fasting and the TFM Community discussions, these are common terms. However, I believe that those not versed would be left wondering about them and possibly looking them up. I know I had to look up PCOS when I first heard it. [13:56]

4. I'm confused about which cooking oils are inflammatory and why. Can you please address this? [20:48]

Fasting Q&A with Dr Jason Fung: New 5-Day Fasting Reset, Bitter Greens, Body Set Weight, Kidney Damage, and More19 Aug 202500:37:33

Episode #219

In this Fasting Q&A episode, hosted by Coach Lisa Chance, Dr. Jason Fung answers questions from the TFM Community:

  1. I realize the relationship between bitters, incretins, and autophagy is more complex than a direct cause-and-effect relationship. The incretin response doesn't directly "promote" autophagy - it primarily regulates blood sugar and satiety. Autophagy is mainly triggered by nutrient scarcity and low insulin levels, not by bitter compounds themselves.  Can you weigh-in on using bitter greens during this reset? [16:07]
  2. I have had some success lowering weight a couple times using fasting and time restricted eating but the weight creeps back up after a while even with doing TRE. What's nice is that I can get it to go back down again with discipline. I'm wondering what scientific evidence exists that your body set weight can successfully be reset for the long term as mine holds for a while but then wants to creep up and if there's a foolproof method to resetting your body set weight? [19:26]
  3. Your kidney patients who are T2D and close to needing dialysis, but are skinny, I'm assuming they need to fast for about a year to reverse the kidney damage, but how do they do it with so little fat mass? [26:56]
  4. I know that vitamin D is fat soluble and best taken with a meal. I've also heard that all supplements are better absorbed when taken with a meal. Is this true? What timeframe is considered "with a meal"? Is it before, during or after the meal? Is vitamin D a stimulant and can disrupt sleep so best taken in the morning? [30:32]
  5. How do you rate the risk of new gallstones formation if a patient already has one or more when it comes to fasting protocols? [33:46]
