We continue our coverage of Roger Aguirre. 22-year-old Roger Aguirre disappeared on November 20, 1975, in Chicago, Illinois. He was one of many young men and boys who went missing in the city in the ‘70s—and like them, he received no attention from the media. Roger’s sister, who’d spent years searching for him after they were separated as children, was sure he wouldn’t simply leave. When his family discovered Roger had potentially crossed paths with John Wayne Gacy, they went to Cook County authorities about the remaining unidentified victims, and whether Roger could be a match. Mothers Day 2019 was the last time Calvin Willie Martinez’s family heard from him. Carlos Delgado disappeared in 1997, but there’s no formal record of this fact—at least, not one his family can access. Although ICE allegedly holds that information in their internal records, there is no listing for Carlos, who was in the US on a temporary residency visa, with NamUs or any other state or county agency. And that has made tracking him, and publicizing his case, extraordinarily difficult. Across the United States, major cities are faced with dozens, if not hundreds, of cases of unidentified decedents: Doe cases who, whether they are homicide victims or have died of other means, are people who may represent more than one of DPD’s cold cases: there are many missing-persons reports which could be resolved by matching the deceased to reports of the missing. The problem lies in a lack of readily available DNA evidence; until the mid-2000s, it was not standard procedure to retain such samples, and most major cities have cases dating back well into the 20th century. Detroit, MI is no exception--but they are unique in their solution. 

In Detroit, multiple agencies, including the DPD, FBI, medical examiner, and anthropologists from across the state have joined forces as Operation UNITED (Unknown Names Identified Through Exhumation and DNA)--and case by case, they are working to re-identify each victim and return them to their loved ones.

It’s a question the families of the missing dream of asking; the families of homicide victims, too, but for very different reasons--because they’re tracking down a perpetrator, just beyond their reach--someone standing close enough to touch, with just one vital detail missing, or the mere suggestion of a suspect, with a thousand doors of possibility open before them. In 1977--before the Atlanta Child Murders would grip the city--an unknown gunman stalked Atlanta's parks, looking for couples who'd sought the privacy of unofficial 'lover's lanes.' Between January and March, he killed three people and critically wounded three more. As the Atlanta Police Department worked to identify him without alerting him to their stakeout plans, local press were at first unaware of the story--and then told to suppress it.

Part two of our coverage of the unsolved murder of Zachariah Juwaun Shorty. Zach,  a 23-year-old beloved father, son, and brother was murdered on July 21st, 2020. His body was discovered on July 25th, in a remote field on the Navajo Nation reservation.
