Episode specific description:
Prepare yourselves, film buffs and cinema enthusiasts, as we embark on a fascinating journey through the ever-evolving film and home entertainment industries with none other than George Feltonstein of Warner Brothers. We'll be tracing George's illustrious career, from his roots in MGM UA to his current role in preserving classic films at Warner Brothers. He'll also share his insights on the marketing and distribution of these timeless creations, and his role as the producer for over 100 restored soundtrack album CDs.

In our conversation, we venture into the realm of technology's transformative impact on home entertainment. We unpack the revolutionary influence of the laserdisc format, the innovative extras MGM included in the Wizard of Oz anniversary edition, and the game-changing introduction of the DVD format by Warren Lieberfab in 1996.

Brace yourselves as George and I tango with the complex dance of niche audiences, film preservation, and profitability in the cinematic world. We'll delve into his experiences in catalog marketing during the heyday of VHS and DVD, explore the rise of brand marketing, and dissect the success of film franchises like Forbidden Hollywood. On top of that, we'll also touch on the allure of precode and film noir films for younger audiences, the crucial role of technology in film preservation, and Warner Brother's unique relationship with UCLA. Trust me, you don't want to miss the stories behind the preservation of classic films such as The Wizard of Oz, Casablanca, and Singin' in the Rain, and the paramount importance of preserving the tales behind these films' creation.

5 Films From the 50s: Warner Archive June Blu-ray Reviews of “Caged,” “The Damned Don’t Cry,” “Angel Face,” “Dangerous When Wet,” & "The Old Man and the Sea"27 Jun 202300:49:11

Send us Fan Mail

George Feltenstein of Warner Bros joins the podcast to review 5 films from the 1950s now available on Blu-ray from the Warner Archive.  We discuss the merits of the films, the restoration, and all of the EXTRAS so that you can make an informed buying decision.

First up is the women's prison drama, "Caged" (1950), starring Eleanor Parker, Agnes Moorehead, and Hope Emerson.  We break down the exceptional performances in this socially conscious drama that make the film still relevant today.
Next is the noir thriller "The Damned Don't Cry" (1950), featuring a powerful performance by Joan Crawford, and strong supporting performances by David Brian, Steve Cochran, Kent Smith.  For years this was an underrated film, but now it has returned to its rightful place as one of Joan Crawford's best.  Loaded with extras, this remastered release has never looked or sounded better.
Then put on your seatbelt, as we examine the RKO noir classic "Angel Face" (1953) starring Robert Mitchum and a dazzling performance by the beautiful Jean Simmons. A new 4K scan restores this film to its original luster making for a mesmerizing viewing experience.
Our next film is pure entertainment, as we review the 1953 MGM musical "Dangerous When Wet" starring "America's Mermaid" Esther Williams, Fernando Lamas, Jack Carson, Charlotte Greenwood, and Denise Darcel. This new 4K scan of the original technicolor camera negatives plus a disk packed with Extras makes for a tremendous new release.
And we finish with a review of the lyrical classic "The Old Man and the Sea" (1958).  Writer Earnest Hemingway requested star Spencer Tracy and Tracy's performance earned him another Academy Award nomination.  A new 4K scan of the original color camera negative returns the film to its original beauty, and restored audio means that Dimitri Tiomkin's Oscar-winning score has never sounded better.
Purchase on Amazon:
CAGED (1950)
ANGEL FACE (1953)
THE DAMNED DON’T CRY (1950)
DANGEROUS WHEN WET (1953)

Warner Archive May 2023 Blu-ray Reviews: "The Boy With Green Hair," and "Hey There, It's Yogi Bear"14 Jun 202300:27:25

Send us Fan Mail

George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive joins the podcast for a fun and informative review of two May Blu-ray releases.   We dive into the restoration and all of the extras on each release and share our insights into why these films are worth adding to your Blu-ray collection.

THE BOY WITH GREEN HAIR (1948) tells the supernatural-tinged story of an orphan who finds a safe haven in small-town America until the day his hair turns green.  The film is a call for tolerance with an inspiring statement that "different" doesn't mean "threatening."  The film boasts a fine cast (Robert Ryan, Pat O'Brien, Dean Stockwell), a popular theme song (Nature Boy) and the feature-film debut of director Joseph Losey (The Servant, The Go-Between).

HEY THERE, IT'S YOGI BEAR (1964) was Hanna-Barbera's first animated theatrical feature film.  George provides background on Hannah Barbara studios and gives an update on the status of future Hannah Barbara releases.

Warner Archive May 2023 Blu-ray Reviews: "Queen Christina," "King Solomon's Mines," & "The Courtship of Eddie's Father"06 Jun 202300:41:08

Send us Fan Mail

George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive joins the podcast for a fun and informative review of three May Blu-ray releases.   We dive into the restoration and all of the extras on each release and share our insights into why these films are worth adding to your Blu-ray collection.

In "Queen Christina" (1933) Greta Garbo stars in one of her greatest roles, as the 17th-century Swedish queen fiercely devoted to her country who fights at the head of her army like a man but who loves like a woman. Directed with his own unique style by Rouben Mamoulian, this M-G-M classic endures as a masterpiece of classic cinema.

Stewart Granger and Deborah Kerr star in the adventure story "King Solomon's Mines" (1950), all shot on location in Africa.  Granger plays Quatermain in this M-G-M adaptation that was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar® and won the awards for Best Color Cinematography and Best Editing. Deborah Kerr plays the plain Englishwoman who hires Quatermain to lead the hunt for her missing husband, even though no safari has ever returned from uninhabited regions their expeditions must cross.

Child star Ron Howard joins Glenn Ford in the delightful romantic comedy "The Courtship of Eddie's Father" (1963).  Shirley Jones, Stella Stevens, and Dina Merrill play the potential new Mrs. Corbett, in this earnest and stylish film directed by the iconic Vincente Minnelli.

Send us Fan Mail

We continue our deep dive into the Looney Tunes Collector's Vault Volume 1 Blu-ray with animation historian Jerry Beck and Warner Archive's George Feltenstein, exploring the treasures of Disc 2 and the evolution of iconic characters.

• Disc 2 features beloved characters and fan favorites, contrasting with Disc 1's more collector-focused rarities
• The 1937 "Porky's Duck Hunt" introduced the world to Daffy Duck and marked the beginning of Warner's irreverent cartoon style
• Daffy Duck cartoons like "Birth of a Notion" showcase the character at his screwiest, paired with a terrifying Peter Lorre caricature
• Warner Brothers cartoons broke the fourth wall and created an interactive experience unlike Disney's more polished approach
• First appearances of beloved characters like Speedy Gonzales and Yosemite Sam are included in this collection
• Warner Archive hints at potential for a Volume 2 release depending on the commercial success of Volume 1

Revisiting SUPERMAN: The Restoration, Stories from Production, and Memories of Director Dick Donner09 May 202301:08:38

Send us Fan Mail

SUPERMAN is one of the most revered superhero films of all time and is credited with launching the modern superhero film craze.   But it also has one of the most interesting and controversial behind-the-scenes stories in film history.

In this episode we are joined by three esteemed guests who worked with director Dick Donner on the "Superman: The Movie" restoration for DVD.  They tell stories of working with Dick, the actual logistics around the restoration work, and the impact it had on both Dick and Superman fans.  Their close working relationship with Dick allowed each of them to see just how emotional, and sometimes painful, it was for Dick to revisit the movie to do the restoration.  They share their memories, give us peeks into what Dick was feeling, and shed light on the burgeoning DVD market of the early 2000s.

The Guests:
Michael Thau first worked with director Richard Donner on "Ladyhawk." He led the restoration of Superman and was the driving force behind "Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut".
Derek Hoffman was Dick Donner's assistant then, following in the footsteps of Geoff Johns (DC) and Kevin Feige (Marvel).  He is currently a VP at The Donners' Company.

Send us Fan Mail

Award-winning author Jon Burlingame joins the podcast for an entertaining review of the best in TV music, as told in his new book, "MUSIC FOR PRIME TIME."   Jon recounts wonderful stories of the earliest TV series and how their theme songs and scores were developed.  Some of the classic shows we revisit are Peter Gunn, Rawhide, The Man From Uncle, The Twilight Zone, I Love Lucy, The Flintstones, Roots, and  The Avengers.  We also discuss composers Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, John Williams,  Jerry Goldsmith, Quincy Jones, and Billy Goldenberg's early work with Steven Spielberg.  Jon also tells us the story of how "Friends" may have saved the TV Theme song.  And we share our admiration for current composers who are keeping TV music as popular as ever with their scores for HBO'S GAME OF THRONES & WESTWORLD, Disney's THE MANDALORIAN, and the Netflix hit STRANGER THINGS.  This is an entertaining and informative look back at the history of TV music that ends with a positive look at the bright future ahead.

Jon Burlingame is the nation's foremost writer on music for TV and Film.  MUSIC FOR PRIME TIME is Jon's newest book, and it provides the most comprehensive review of TV music ever written.

Robinson, James Cagney, Errol Flynn, and someone often called the 5th Warner Brother - Bette Davis.  These classic films on DVD and Blu-ray represent most of the best of classic Warner Bros and are the films that led to the early success that cemented Warner Bros as a major Hollywood Studio.

EXCLUSIVE: Warner Archive April Release Announcement: Safe In Hell, One Way Passage, The Strawberry Blonde, Storm Warning, A Lion is in the Streets16 Mar 202300:27:44

Send us Fan Mail

George Feltenstein of the Warner Archive announces the April 2023 Blu-ray releases.

Safe in Hell is a 1931 American pre-Code thriller film directed by William A. Wellman (Public Enemy) and starring Dorothy Mackaill.  MacKaill gives a phenomenal performance as a woman of ill repute who’s wanted for the murder of a man under accidental circumstances.  It’s a horrifying and shocking film, as many Warner Brothers pre-code films are. The previous DVD release of the film came from a 16 mm master, however, this new Blu-ray is taken from a 4K scan of a new 35mm master nitrate print master that was discovered so the film now looks stunning.

One Way Passage is a 1932 American pre-Code romantic film that reunites 2 stars that had arrived at Warner Brothers from Paramount, William Powell and Kay Francis. Powell plays a convicted murderer who meets a terminally ill woman played by Francis in a Hong Kong bar. Aboard the ship on his way to America, Powell spots Francis and over the course of the month-long voyage, they fall in love. This new Blu-ray is taken from a 4K scan from the camera negative.

The Strawberry Blonde (1941) is a delightful romantic comedy set at the turn of the century.  directed by Raoul Walsh,  it stars James Cagney, Olivia de Havilland, and features Rita Hayworth, who was on loan to Warner Brothers for the film.  Cagney is irresistible as the leading man who is going to marry his sweetheart de Havilland, but he is seduced somewhat by Hayworth. This is a bona fide classic that has been adored for generations since its release. This Blu-ray is taken from a 4K case scan off of the original camera negative and looks terrific.

Storm Warning is a 1951 American thriller directed by Stuart Heisler and starring Ginger Rogers, Ronald Reagan, Doris Day, and Steve Cochran.  Ginger Rogers is a dress company sales representative who goes to visit her sister Doris Day in a little southern town.  Inadvertently she witnesses the Ku Klux Klan pulling a guy out of prison and lynching him.  Ronald Reagan plays the government agent who is sent to investigate the case and Cochran plays Doris Day’s husband, who is a member of the Klan. This Blu-ray is taken from a 4K scan off the nitrate camera negative with restored picture and sound.

A Lion Is in the Streets is a 1953 American drama directed by Raoul Walsh and starring James Cagney and Barbara Hale as his wife. Cagney plays a charismatic roving peddler who conspires with a local southern political boss to rise to power.  His character is loosely based on Huey Long, who was a controversial governor of Louisiana in the late twenties and early thirties. This technicolor film was restored from the 3 technicolor safety negatives and it looks and sounds terrific.

The Importance of "Confessions of a Nazi Spy"14 Mar 202300:47:26

Send us Fan Mail

George Feltenstein and Jeff Briggs of Warner Bros join the podcast to discuss one of the most important films in the history of the studio.  The political thriller "Confessions of a NAZI SPY," (1939) was the first feature film from a major studio to take on the fascism of Hitler and the Nazi Party.  Based on real-life events, the film delves into a spy ring in New York that recruited Americans into the German American Bund.  George and Jeff detail the courage of the brothers Warner to take on this material, develop it into a feature film, and the casting of stars Edward G. Robinson, Francis Lederer, George Sanders, and Paul Lukas.  Many actors in supporting roles and production crew went uncredited due to fears of reprisals against their familys still in Europe.  George also details the remastering of the film for the new Blu-ray and the robust extras that are included.  This is a terrific film that is also one of the most important films in the Warner Bros catalog.  This episode is part of our 100th year celebration of Warner Bros.

Warner Archive 2022 Year in Review and January 2023 Release Highlights Part 126 Dec 202200:29:21

Send us Fan Mail

George Feltenstein takes a "look back" at some of the challenges and highlights of 2022 for the Warner Archive in this "Year in Review."  Then we discuss the first two Blu-ray releases of January 2023.  We start off with the 1928 MGM classic silent film "Our Dancing Daughters" starring Joan Crawford in a star-making role.  The music and dancing in this film are a wonderful representation of the era of the flapper and the new restoration from the best elements available now means viewers can see and hear the film in the best condition since its original release.  Next, we have a Fritz Lang directed noir western, "Rancho Notorious" (1952), starring Marlene Dietrich as the matron of a criminal hideout called "Chuck-a-Luck."  Costars Arthur Kennedy and Mel Ferrar are rivals for her attention in this murder mystery revenge story.  These are just the first two of 5 new Blu-rays coming in January from the Warner Archive.  We will discuss the other three in an upcoming episode.

Four Films of Roland Joffe with Daniel Griffith08 Dec 202200:50:47

Send us Fan Mail

Documentary filmmaker Daniel Griffith joins the podcast to discuss his extras on the IMPRINT Blu-ray release of "Directing Roland Joffe (1984-92)."  These four films were released in less than a decade and represent an amazingly creative output in a short amount of time.  The films are "The Killing Fields" (1984), "The Mission" (1986), "Fat Man and Little Boy" (1988), and "City of Joy" (1992).  Daniel Griffith's 90-minute documentary titled "Prisoners of Our Own History" is an intimate conversation with Roland Joffe discussing the themes and issues of each of these films. The extras alone make this release an important addition to your collection for fans of Roland Joffe and his films.

We also talk about Daniel Griffith's two-hour documentary for the IMPRINT Blu-ray release in September of "The Beast" (1988), directed by Kevin Reynolds (Fandango, Water World).  A somewhat forgotten film of the 80s about a Russian tank crew fighting in Afghanistan, the film has more resonance today than most people may realize.

Screenwriter Tim Sheridan talks about breaking into writing for animation and the path that led him to working on "Batman: The Long Halloween."  This seminal work from writer Jeph Loeb and legendary artist Tim Sale has impacted filmmakers from Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" trilogy to the recent Matt Reeves "The Batman."  Tim Sheridan gives insights into the development of the project at DC and why it took so long to bring it to the DCU animated movies collection.  He also reveals why it was developed as a two-part film with a vision toward a single film in the deluxe edition.  We also talk about the amazing voice talents of Jensen Ackles (Batman), Naya Rivera (Selina Kyle/Catwoman), Josh Duhamel (Harvey Dent/Two-face), Julie Nathanson (Gilda) and others.  And we discuss the release of the Deluxe Edition, available for the first time in 4K.
