| E70: Personal Stories, Overcoming Grief, & Pathways To Healing, with Rick Belden | 28 Jan 2025 | 01:36:08 | |
Welcome to the Explorer Poet Podcast. This episode will be a bit different. Rather than one guest, this is a group call, with a discussion facilitated by Rick Belden, who was first on the podcast back in Episode 51. He returns here for what was a virtual night of exploring personal stories, the processing of grief, and the pathway to healing. On the call, we discussed questions such as - What is a Mother Wound? What is a Father Wound? What is our inner child? How can we access and heal earlier versions of ourselves? And how do we become connected to those inner selves? Rick is an artist, poet, and coach who works with men to solve difficult emotional, personal, and relational challenges. He’s a great listener, is full of insights and experience, and I truly enjoyed my evening with Rick and the others who joined the call. | E85: Randolph Nesse - Evolutionary Explanations for Biology and Psychiatry | 11 Jun 2025 | 01:01:30
My guest today is Randolph Nesse, a founder of evolutionary medicine whose work with George Williams inspired many to expand explanations of disease from descriptions of why and how mechanisms fail in some individuals, to evolutionary explanations for traits that leave all individuals in a species vulnerable to a disease. Their six categories of possible explanations have become canonical: the limits of natural selection, mismatch with environments, arms races with pathogens, trade-offs, gene transmission at the cost of robustness, and defensive responses. After 40 years as a Professor of Psychiatry and of Psychology at the University of Michigan, Nesse moved to Arizona State University to start a new Center for Evolution and Medicine, and the International Society for Evolution Medicine and Public Health. His focus is now returning to his original mission of trying to provide a solid scientific foundation for psychiatry through evolution. We discussed evolution, cultural group selection, Mormonism, life and death, mental problems, natural selection, emotions, being vulnerable to failure, aging, biology, asking - how does it work and how did it get that way?, being vulnerable to disease, ancestral environments, anthropology, depression, anxiety, panic attacks, the smoke detector principle, love, evolutionary treatment, social traps, and the acronym SOCIAL - social resources, occupation, children, income, abilities, and love. | E35: Jared Janes | 16 May 2023 | 01:25:28
My guest today is Jared Janes, a coach, podcaster, community builder, and meditator. From an early age, Jared has had a deep interest in human development, and has been willing to endure quite a lot to learn about and experience that development for himself. Jared spent six years exploring a handful of popular meditation methods and spiritual traditions, but still sensed that something was missing. With the guidance of his friend & teacher Charlie Awbery, he moved from a renunciative practice to the life-affirming path of a yogi. And in 2020, the two of them co-founded a contemporary community of practice called Evolving Ground. I found Jared to be open, warm, and full of helpful knowledge based on personal experience. I truly enjoyed our conversation and I hope you do as well. In our conversation we discussed facing mortality, Jared’s personal experience facing adversity from a young age and how it shaped his behavior growing up, religion, adversity, privilege, pain, morality, good and evil, Buddhism, stoicism, differences between East and West, non-duality, humility, vulnerability, finding truth, distance from oneself, equanimity, individual stories, detachment, mythology, the bible, the garden of Eden, the two trees, symbolism, reincarnation, meditation, the endless pursuit of ‘something’ and the evolution of our own stories.
