Could You Sell Your Business Someday? 5 Things You Should Be Doing Now22 sept. 202600:19:19

You don’t need to be ready to sell your business to start building one that someone else could actually buy.

Maybe selling isn’t part of your plan right now. Maybe it’s something you’ve thought about in passing, or maybe you simply like knowing that the option could be there someday.

But if you did decide to sell your business five or ten years from now, would you be building it differently today?

In this episode, I’m sharing five things you can start thinking about now to increase your business value and create a company that isn’t completely dependent on you to operate.

We’re talking about founder dependency, the strength of your business systems, and the things that contribute to business transferability when someone else eventually needs to step into what you’ve built.

Preparing to sell your business isn’t only about what happens when you’re ready to leave. Your exit readiness is shaped by decisions you’re making years before a potential sale ever happens.

The goal isn’t to build your business as though you’re constantly preparing to walk away from it. It’s to build something strong enough to give you options.

That means looking at where the knowledge lives, how decisions get made, how much the business relies on you personally, and whether someone else could realistically step in and continue operating what you’ve created.

Even if you never sell your business, doing this work can create a stronger company today, one with more independence, more value, and more freedom for you as the owner.

If you do eventually decide to sell your business, you’ll be starting from a very different position because you’ve spent years intentionally building a business worth buying.

Business Exit Planning: Are Canadian Business Owners Ready for the Wave?15 sept. 202600:15:32

What happens when thousands of Canadian business owners reach retirement age but the businesses they've spent decades building aren't ready to operate without them? The coming wave of business transitions is predictable. The question is whether owners are preparing for it.

Business exit planning isn't something that begins when you call a broker. It begins years earlier, in the decisions you're making about your operations, leadership, systems, and relationships. If everything still depends on you, a future buyer or successor may be taking on far more risk than they realize.

We look at why so many owners struggle to prepare, from finding the right buyer or successor to understanding business valuation and addressing founder dependency. A profitable business can still be difficult to transfer when its knowledge, client relationships, and decision-making remain concentrated in one person.

You'll also hear why “I'll deal with it later” doesn't necessarily buy you more time. Whether you're considering business succession, succession planning Canada, or a small business exit strategy, readiness is built through decisions not simply through the passage of time.

The good news is that you don't need to have a buyer, a timeline, or a complete exit plan today. You can start by documenting what lives in your head, strengthening your team, improving operational visibility, and making your business more transferable. That's how you create freedom, flexibility, and options for the future.

If you're a Canadian business owner wondering whether your company is ready for what comes next, take the Is Your Business Worth Buying? quiz. It's a practical place to understand where your business stands and what deserves your attention next.

The Mindset Shift That Gets You Out of the Day-to-Day in Your Business08 sept. 202600:12:48

A mindset shift is often the first step toward building a business that can operate without you. Sometimes the biggest thing keeping your business dependent on you isn't your team, your systems, or your technology. It's the way you've trained the business to rely on you.

If you're still the person making every important decision, solving every unexpected problem, stepping into client relationships, or answering questions your team should be able to handle, you've unintentionally created founder dependency.

And changing that takes more than delegating a few tasks.

In this episode, I'm talking about the founder mindset that has to change as your business grows and why moving from operator to owner means changing the way you respond when something needs to be done.

Instead of asking, "How do I fix this?" we need to start asking different questions.

What information is missing? What hasn't been documented? Where is decision-making authority unclear? What does someone else need to know so this problem doesn't automatically come back to me next time?

That's where your entrepreneurial mindset begins to evolve from solving today's problems to building a business capable of solving tomorrow's without you.

We'll also look at what happens when you start giving your team the knowledge, systems, authority, and confidence they need to make decisions independently and why that matters for exit readiness long before you're actually thinking about selling your business.

Here's the question I want you to consider:

If you disappeared from your business for 30 days, what would break?

Which decisions would stop? Which clients would immediately ask for you? What knowledge would disappear with you?

Those answers tell you a lot about how transferable your business really is.

The goal isn't to remove yourself overnight. It's to intentionally build a business that can continue beyond you, whether you eventually pursue a business exit strategy, transfer leadership, or simply want more freedom from the day-to-day.

How to Sell a Business: Is Your Business Ready to Run Without You?08 sept. 202600:12:41

How to sell a business starts long before you ever speak to a buyer. If you stepped away tomorrow, would everything keep working?

A successful business is not automatically a transferable business. If sales, client relationships, operations, decisions, and knowledge depend on the founder, you may have created a job rather than an asset. That founder dependency can affect exit readiness, business value, and your options at exit.

Learning how to sell a business means getting specific about where the dependency exists. Are you the only person who can close a sale, solve a problem, make a key decision, or manage an important relationship? What knowledge lives in your head, inbox, or spreadsheets?

This is where how to sell a business becomes less about finding a buyer and more about building something a buyer can understand, operate, and trust. Documenting business operations creates structure and consistency. Consistency makes the business more transferable.

Your team matters too. If every decision comes back to you, ask whether people have the authority and business systems they need to act independently. Start small: move one decision into the business and give someone ownership. The goal is to create a sustainable business that works with you, not because of you.

Strong client and supplier relationships are valuable, but how to sell a business also means asking whether those relationships belong to the company or only exist because of the founder. Building relationships across the organization reduces risk and strengthens business value.

Every documented process, delegated decision, stronger relationship, and clearer system improves exit readiness and gives you more freedom today. Maybe you sell, bring in a partner, or simply work fewer hours.

If you’re wondering how to sell a business, start with a better question: what would make this business worth buying?

What Buyers Actually Value: Business Operations & Exit Planning08 sept. 202600:14:03

What if your business looks successful on paper but a buyer would struggle to take it over?

That’s the question behind business operations and exit planning. Revenue, profitability, and strong client relationships matter, but they don’t tell the whole story. The real question is whether the business can continue to perform when the founder is no longer the person making every decision, solving every problem, and keeping everything moving.

This conversation reframes business worth around what exists beyond the founder. You’ll learn why founder dependency can create risk, how business systems and documented processes make knowledge transferable, and why having a team is not the same as having a business that can operate without you.

We also look at leadership and delegation, meaningful reporting, KPIs, and visibility. Strong business operations give a future owner the information they need to understand what is happening, where the risks are, and what needs attention. That clarity reduces uncertainty and uncertainty can affect business worth.

The goal isn’t to create paperwork for the sake of paperwork. It’s to build business transferability through practical systems, capable leaders, documented knowledge, and better decision-making. This is where business exit planning becomes more than something you do when you’re ready to sell. It becomes part of building a stronger business today.

Whether your future involves a sale, succession, stepping away as CEO, or simply having more freedom, the work starts long before the transaction. Look at what happens when you step back. What still moves? What stops? What only you know?

Better business operations don’t just make a company easier to run. They create options, reduce risk, and help build a business worth buying.

Business Exit Strategy: Why You Should Start Before You're Ready to Sell (Trailer)01 sept. 202600:02:43

A business exit strategy isn't something you create when you're finally ready to sell. It starts years earlier with how you build your business today.

Building a successful business is one thing. Building one that can thrive without you and that someone else could eventually own, is something different.

I grew up watching my parents build our family business, and years later, I watched them make the decision to sell it. Seeing that transition up close showed me that leaving a business is about so much more than a financial transaction. Your identity, relationships, knowledge, team, and years of work are all wrapped up in what you've built.

I'm Amy Sussex, a Canadian Business Exit Strategist helping founders build businesses that are ready for whatever comes next.

And there's one question I want more business owners to ask:

What would happen to your business if you stepped away tomorrow?

Could your team make decisions without you? Would your clients still be well looked after? Could the business keep running? If someone wanted to buy it, would there be a transferable business to purchase or a job that's still dependent on its founder?

That's what The Exit Ready Business is about.

Each week, we'll talk about exit planning, business exit planning, founder dependency, business systems, business transferability, business value, succession planning, and what it really takes to build a company someone else could successfully operate and eventually buy.

You'll also hear conversations with Canadian founders and experts about the realities of selling a business, preparing for a business transition, and the decisions you can make today to increase business value, even if selling isn't on your radar for years.

You don't have to be ready to leave your business to start making it exit ready.

You can start building it as an asset today, one that gives you more freedom now, more value over time, and more options when you're ready for whatever comes next.

If that's the kind of business you want to build, subscribe to The Exit Ready Business and join me each week.

100: Strategic Planning for Female Entrepreneurs: Are You Growing with Intention?11 août 202600:11:31

What if growing your business is actually taking you further away from the life you want? I’ve learned that for female entrepreneurs, growth can easily become a cycle of doing more: more offers, more content, more networking, more hours. However, intentional business growth starts with a different question: is my business supporting the life I actually want?

In this episode I’m looking at business strategy through a more personal lens. For me, business strategy isn’t only about revenue targets. It’s about creating an aligned business around my values, priorities, energy, and the season of life I’m in.

I share three questions I ask regularly. First, does my business fit the season of life I’m in? I know the pull between being present at home and focused on work. Your business growth mindset needs to leave room for real life.

Next, do my daily decisions reflect my values and long-term vision? I explain why your calendar tells the truth and how a business mindset shift can change decisions. Instead of asking, “Can I do this?” I can ask, “Should I do this?” That simple question can protect my time, energy, and peace.

Finally, I look at whether my day-to-day business activities are actually moving me towards the life and business I want. Being busy isn’t the same as making progress. That’s where strategic planning becomes valuable: it helps me focus on what matters, build business confidence, and stop chasing every trend or comparing my journey to someone else’s.

I’ve learned that sustainable business growth requires clarity, intentional entrepreneurship, and a business that works with my life.

If you’re feeling pulled in too many directions, grab a notebook and ask yourself these three questions. Then listen in and consider what strategic planning could look like in this season.

99: Business Admin Systems: How to Stop Running Your Business From Your Memory04 août 202600:08:26

If business admin systems feel like the least exciting part of running your business, you're not alone.  When information lives in your memory instead of reliable systems, even simple tasks become harder, mistakes increase, and growth starts to feel overwhelming.

Strong business organization isn't about adding complexity; it's about creating consistency. By focusing on practical administrative systems and repeatable business processes, you make it easier to serve clients, stay on top of priorities, and reduce the mental load of remembering every detail. It's not about working harde, it's about creating a business that works even when you're not thinking about every moving part.

A simple framework can transform the way you operate: organize what matters, create clear documentation, schedule recurring tasks instead of relying on memory, and review what's slowing you down. These small improvements strengthen your workflow management, support better productivity systems, and create the foundation for effective SOPs for small business that can be followed by anyone on your team.

The goal of business admin systems isn't perfection. It's building confidence, clarity, and a business that can grow without becoming dependent on you. One process improved today creates more freedom tomorrow, and those consistent changes are what lead to lasting success.

95: How to Build a Simple Customer System That Actually Works07 juil. 202600:13:26

A strong customer follow up system isn't about sending endless emails or relying on complicated software. It's about creating a simple, repeatable experience that helps every customer feel seen, supported, and valued. When your communication becomes consistent, your business becomes easier to run and your customers notice the difference.

Many small business owners spend so much time trying to attract new clients that they overlook the people who already know, like, and trust them. That's where customer retention strategies small business owners can implement make the biggest impact. By building a clear customer communication process, creating a reliable lead follow up process, and improving your customer onboarding process, you create an experience that builds confidence from the very first interaction.

You'll learn how to build a practical customer follow up system by focusing on three simple stages: attracting, communicating, and retaining. Instead of relying on memory, you'll discover how a client management system and small business customer management approach can reduce missed opportunities while creating a smoother customer journey small business owners can confidently deliver.

It's not about being perfect, it's about being consistent. A thoughtful customer follow up system helps strengthen your customer experience small business clients will remember, encourages client follow up that feels genuine, and supports long-term client retention strategies without adding more complexity to your day. Even a simple customer service system can create lasting trust when it's used consistently.

If you're ready to stop letting great opportunities slip through the cracks, this conversation will help you create a customer follow up system that feels manageable, supports your growth, and makes it easier to build lasting relationships with the people you serve.

If you found this episode helpful, be sure to subscribe, share it with another business owner, and keep following along as we continue building simple systems that help your business work with you, not because of you.

94: Stop Overcomplicating Business Systems: Simplicity Is Your Advantage30 juin 202600:16:34

Instead of chasing the latest tools, focus on building habits that strengthen your business operations. A client onboarding checklist, a weekly finance review, or a simple follow-up process can become the foundation of effective small business systems. These practical routines improve productivity, create confidence, and make it easier to deliver a consistent experience without relying on memory.

Understanding the difference between process vs system in business is where everything begins to click. A process explains how a task gets done, while a business system brings those processes together into a repeatable framework that supports long-term success. This shift allows systems for entrepreneurs to feel practical instead of overwhelming while encouraging steady business process improvement.

When your workflow for small business is built around simplicity rather than perfection, growth becomes far more sustainable. Thoughtful standard operating procedures and well-designed business systems help eliminate unnecessary friction, improve business efficiency, and free up more time for the work that matters most. That's the true value of a business system, creating reliable structure that supports both your business and your peace of mind.

If you're ready to simplify your business instead of adding more complexity, subscribe so you never miss an episode, and share this conversation with another business owner who could benefit from building smarter systems, one simple step at a time.

93: The 5 Business Pillars Every Small Business Needs02 juin 202600:14:13

In this episode of Beyond Your Business, Amy Sussex dives into one of the most common challenges for entrepreneurs: feeling overwhelmed by the day-to-day operations of running a business. She breaks down the five key pillars every business relies on — customers, sales, delivery and operations, finance, and admin systems — and explains why trying to fix everything at once often creates even more frustration instead of progress.

Amy shares practical guidance on how to identify the area of your business that’s creating the most stress, draining the most time, or taking the most mental energy — and why starting there can make everything else feel more manageable. She also offers an honest reminder that business owners don’t need to solve every problem overnight. By improving one system at a time and focusing on steady progress over perfection, you can create stronger operations, reduce overwhelm, and build a business that feels more sustainable and supportive in the long run.

90: The Real Reason Women Entrepreneurs Burn Out While Growing Successful Businesses15 mai 202600:16:24

In this episode of Beyond Your Business, I open up about the side of entrepreneurship that often goes unspoken — running a business that looks successful on the outside while quietly feeling overwhelming behind the scenes. I explore the mental load so many business owners carry every day, from constant decision-making to managing operations, clients, and expectations, and why that pressure can quickly lead to burnout.

I share why the problem often isn’t a lack of motivation or mindset, but the systems and structures holding the business together. I encourage listeners to stop being the sole support system for their business and start building workflows, processes, and foundations that create sustainability instead of exhaustion. This episode is an honest and empowering reminder that long-term success shouldn’t come at the expense of your well-being — and that creating a business that supports you is just as important as growing one that serves others.

74: Is Your Business Running You? 3 Signs It’s Time to Level Up Your Systems15 oct. 202500:14:10

In today’s episode, Amy dives into a question she hears from so many entrepreneurs:
Why does it feel like my business is running me instead of me running my business?

If you’ve ever felt buried under sticky notes, stuck as the bottleneck in your business, or guilty about dropping balls with clients, you’re not alone. She has been there too. In fact, this summer she found herself in that same pattern, realizing that even as a systems strategist, her own business was running her.

In this conversation, she breaks down three clear signs your business is ready for stronger systems, plus a simple action step you can take today to bring more ease, flow, and freedom back into your business.

Because how you run your business doesn’t just affect your revenue, it affects your energy, creativity, and your ability to enjoy the freedom you started this whole thing for in the first place.

73: From Surviving to Leading: The Story Behind the Podcast Rebrand15 oct. 202500:21:37

This episode marks a brand new chapter for me, my business, and this podcast. I’m sharing the full backstory of how this show began, the challenges that shaped my journey, and what led me to evolve from You Are Your Business into Beyond Your Business.

2023 was a year that tested me,  as a mom, a wife, and an entrepreneur. From personal loss and constant setbacks to questioning if I should even stay in business, I found myself at a crossroads. But through it all, I chose to take action, one small step at a time.

That decision,  to focus on connection, creativity, and growth is what led to this podcast. And now, as both I and my business have grown, it’s time for the podcast to grow with me.

Beyond Your Business is more than a name change. It’s about going deeper into leadership, alignment, and building a business that supports your life, not consumes it.

72: Seasons are changing and so is this podcast…02 oct. 202500:06:27

Something big has been happening behind the scenes, and I’m finally ready to share it: this podcast has officially rebranded.

When I launched my show, I was home with a one-year-old and a six-year-old, craving connection and real conversations outside of nap schedules and snack times. At the time, the name You Are Your Business felt true. As a solo entrepreneur, people were drawn to me, my story, my energy, my work. That season was about building relationships and finding my voice.

But as I’ve grown, so has my business. I’m stepping into leadership, building a team, and creating something bigger than myself. And I knew the podcast needed to evolve too.

That’s why I’m so excited to introduce you to the new name: Beyond Your Business.

This podcast has always been about more than just systems and strategy. It’s about leadership, intention, and creating success that actually feels good. It’s about building a business that supports your life; not one that takes it over.

If you’ve ever thought about pivoting, rebranding, or realigning your business, I hope my journey inspires you to embrace your own evolution.

New episodes drop starting October 15th and I cannot wait for you to hear them. Make sure you’re subscribed so you don’t miss what’s coming next.

Beyond Your Business Trailer 01 oct. 202500:02:40

Running a business is so much more than systems, strategy, and sales, it’s about who you are as a leader, the life you’re creating, and the experiences you’re shaping along the way.

I remembered this when I left my corporate career six years ago to become a full-time entrepreneur. I wanted freedom, fulfillment, and purpose,  not to keep wishing away time until five o’clock, the weekend, or the next vacation.

But somewhere along the way, I forgot. And I see so many entrepreneurs fall into the same trap. We get caught up in the hustle, in chasing milestones, in trying to keep all the plates spinning  and we lose sight of why we started in the first place.

That’s why I created Beyond Your Business. I’m Amy Sussex, a business consultant supporting entrepreneurs behind the scenes with operations, client experience, and strategy  and a fellow entrepreneur navigating the highs and lows of growing a business while raising a family.

This podcast is where we get real about what it actually takes to lead in business and in life. You’ll hear conversations on leadership, systems, and scaling, but also the messy middle, the mindset shifts, and the behind-the-scenes decisions that shape sustainable success and your version of success.

Expect a mix of short solo episodes, behind-the-scenes lessons, and inspiring conversations with incredible women who are building bold, beautiful, and sustainable businesses, one intentional decision at a time.

If you’re ready to build a business that feels as good as it looks, hit subscribe and join me each week on Beyond Your Business.
