The Colonel felt alarmed by Marianne’s state, but Elanor dismissed it. Eventually a doctor is called, and he states that Marianne will be better in a few days, and that her infection is minor. At the word of infection, Mrs. Palmer leaves with her baby to stay with some relations, where Mr. Palmer is to join her in a few days. Mrs Jennings says that she will stay however, to help nurse Marianne, and while the Colonel wishes at first to leave, he is persuaded to stay by the stern woman. Marianne laments that they are again forced to stay more time from home. Marianne is no better on the following day, but she seems not to be any worse. On the third day, the doctor declares that Marianne is getting better, and Elanor rejoiced in the fact that he letters to her mother were light-hearted. At the end of the day however, Marianne falls seemingly more ill than before and Elanor decides to sit up with her sister all night. Marianne gets more and more disturbed and soon calls out in her fever for her mother and claims that she mustn’t go by London. Elanor tries to sooth her sister but checks her pulse and it is not good news. She runs down to the drawing room where she finds the Colonel and tells him what has happened. He offers to ride all night to collect Mrs. Dashwood, and in the time, it takes for Elanor to write a short message to her, his horses are ready, and he sets off. The doctor eventually comes and in spite of Marianne’s state, he declares that she will be better. Several hours go by and Marianne is still sick. A heavy storm has begun, and through the storm Elanor believes that she can hear the sound of a Carriage. She runs downstairs, and though it seems to early for the Colonel to be back, she feels nearly assured that it is him, but when she opens the door she sees for the first time in months, Willoughby… SEO stuff I don't want to do. Marianne finds it difficult to leave the city even though she wanted nothing but to leave for the past 6 weeks, but finally, the Dashwoods leave London and after two days’ travel, they arrive at the Palmer residence in Sommerset. Cleveland is a modern built house, and while it has no park, there are plenty of wooded areas which enchant Marianne, and before she has spent 5 minutes at the house, she heads into the garden. She intends to spend almost every hour of every day in the garden, but this plan is sadly ruined by a very heavy and settled rain. The following day, Mr. Palmer and Colonel Brandon join the women at the house by dinner and supply the Elanor and Marianne with some discourse that doesn’t revolve around Charlotte’s child. The Colonel tells Elanor about Edward, and she finds Mr. Palmer a very pleasant companion, in spite of his elevated ego. The Colonel, while he mainly converses with Elanor, has his eyes on Marianne. Elanor takes her to a jewellery store, where Elanor was negotiating the sale of some old jewels for her mother. The is heaving, and the girls are obliged to wait. One pompous man is holding up the line. When she finally gets to the front of the line Elanor starts her business when she is interrupted by another gentleman, her brother. They have a quick catch up, and after her business done walks his sisters out to Mrs. Jenning’s carriage. The following day, he visits his sisters at Mrs. Jenning’s place, where he makes a very good impression on her and Colonel Brandon, who was also visiting. He asks Elanor to walk with him to Sir John Middleton’s place where he is hoping to make their acquaintance. She readily consents as the weather is nice. He goes on to nudge her about Colonel Brandon, who he believes is in love with Elanor. She tries to dissuade him from this idea, but he doesn’t want to hear it. He seems very keen on the Colonel after finding out about his financial situation. He then talks about Mrs. Jennings and her financial situation and seems certain that she will bestow some money on his sisters too. When they arrive at the Middleton’s lodgings, John Dashwood makes a very good first impression, and he seems equally fond of them as well. SEO stuff I don't want to do. On his journey he crosses paths with a farmer who remarks a cart that is apparently too late for its harvest. The man also mentions Gimmerton, which reminds Lockwood of his time at the Grange, and he decides to visit for the night and see Nelly, and also settle his debts with Heathcliff. He discovers that Nelly is no longer at the Grange and has been moved to the Wuthering Heights. He decides to head to the Heights while the sun is still up where he talks to Nelly about the past few months. She says that Cathy admitted to her that she felt guilty about mocking Hareton for his attempts to learn to read. One afternoon, Hareton was wounded while hunting and had to remain inside at the Heights. He and Cathy fought at first, but they soon agreed to get along, and Cathy even promised to help Hareton read properly. The two young people have slowly grown to love each other, and Nelly says that she cannot wait for the two of them to marry.

He brings a note from Nelly to give to Cathy. Hareton first takes the note, but when Cathy cries, he gives it back to her. He has been struggling to learn to read. Cathy says however that she has been deprived of books. Cathy mocks Hareton's attempts to learn, angering him, but she says that she doesn't want to hinder his progress. Heathcliff returns and on entering the house, mutters quietly to himself that he he can only see Catherine Earnshaw's features in his face - so much so that he can hardly bare to see him. Lockwood passes a dreary meal with Heathcliff and Hareton and then leaves. Riding back to the Grange, he remarks on how dreary the North and its people are. One day, while he and his wife sitting on their patio, a grey-clad soldier rode up to them and asked for a glass of water. The soldier appears to be a confederate. While his wife got some water, Farquhar asked some questions from the front and was informed by that the Northern forces took Owl Creek Bridge, and have repaired the railroad to prepare for an advance. Any civilian caught interfering with the Northern forces would be hanged. Farquhar asks how someone could help the southern forces, and the man replies that he could easily set fire to the driftwood in the area to burn the bridge down. The man then drinks his water and leaves, and we are informed that he was actually a Northern scout.

Zillah says that Heathcliff forbade anyone from acting kindly towards Cathy, and says that Cathy must tend to Linton by herself until he passes away. Since Linton's death, Cathy has kept her distance from Zillah and Hareton, with whom she is in constant conflict. Desperate to help, Nelly took a cottage to bring Cathy to, but Heathcliff, she knows won't allow it. The only thing that could save Cathy would be for her to remarry...Writing in his Diary, Lockwood says that this is the end of Nelly's story. He states that he is recovering from his illness and says that he will ride to the Heights on the following day to tell Heathcliff that he is leaving for London, and won't be back until the end of his lease. Heathcliff may look for a new tenant. Cathy spits back that she and Linton are in love and that in spite of Linton's bad-temperdness, they will prevail, while Heathcliff, has no one to love him. As Cathy goes to pack her things, Nelly asks to have Zillah's position at the Heights, desperate to remain with Cathy. Heathcliff interrupts her however to tell her that the day before, when the sexton was digging the grave to lay Edgar, he had him remove the earth from Catherine's grave and undo the lid so he could look on her face. He asserts that Catherine's face will not fade until he too is in the ground.He says that he asked the Sexton to remove one half of Catherine's coffin so that he and her may lay together in the ground once he too is gone. Nelly chastises him for disturbing the dead, and Heathcliff tells her that he believes in ghosts, and that he has been haunted by Cathine since the day she died.As they leave, Cathy asks Nelly to visit her, but Heathcliff says that no such thing will happen, noting that if he needs Nelly, he will come to the Grange himself. His wrists are bound and there is a rope tied around his neck. He is positioned on loose planks that have been made into a makeshift platform. Two army soldiers, a captain and a sergeant from the Northern Army are surrounding him. Farquhar observes the forest scene around him and takes in the army on the banks of the bridge while the men around him move to their final positions. Awaiting the captain's signal, the sergeant is about to step away to let Farquhar drop. Farquhar tries to stare into the water swirling below. He watches some driftwood get carried away by the slow water. He shuts his eyes to push away any visual distractions and tries to think of his family. He gets distracting by a ringing metal tone that seems to bang constantly, but slower and slower. Farquhar opens his eyes and tries to imagine himself freeing his hand and swimming away down the river to his family. These thoughts are barely realised before the captain nods and the sergeant steps off of the board.

Nelly searches through the house for Cathy, but only finds Linton who tells her that Cathy is locked away. The two are now married and Linton claims that everything she owns is now his.Fearing that Heathcliff will come back home and find her, Nelly hurries to Thrushcross Grange. Here, she tells the incredibly ill Edgar that Cathy is well and will be home soon. She send a group of men to search for Cathy at the Grange and to get a lawyer, for Edgar's will. The men fail to get Cathy back, and the lawyer says that he will come after he has finished his work in town. Nelly, late at night hears a knock at the door and believes it to be the lawyer, but it is Cathy! She can see her father before he passes away, and Edgar is happy to see that his daughter is married to Linton, not knowing how awful he is. Shortly after Edgar's passing, Mr. Green, the lawyer arrives, saying he has seen Heathcliff, and he orders everyone but Nelly and Cathy out of the house by the order of the new owner of the house.
