Enriching Environments on Afternoons with Helen Farmer 28 Nov 202300:15:22
Beating parenting overwhelm, Mum guilt and not feeling good enough, this is a terrific interview from November 2023 when I was lucky enough to be invited on to speak with Helen Farmer on Dubai Eye. An essential 15 minute pick-me-up for parents with children of all ages!
How frying eggs cultivates resilience! - Episode 10 - Season 209 Dec 202200:17:51

During this Masterclass we discussed how food preparation and cooking with children from the Early Years and throughout the Elementary years builds resilience for a child by developing a friendly relationship with error. Β This is so crucial because making mistakes, learning and trying again is a natural part of being human - one which is removed from a mainstream educational experience. Β The question we asked ourselves as the session came to an end was: in what ways are we cultivating a friendliness towards error in our home? Β

Episode 14 - 'Developing Concentration in the Young Child'17 Jan 202100:45:55

Thank you for joining me!

In this session we cover:

Fostering concentration is more about the support that we as caregivers, can give to our child than anything else.

β€’ It is about the energy that we bring to our child's space.

β€’ It is about allowing them space and time in their day to have the opportunity to concentrate on something of interest.

β€’ It is about the level of connection and bonding we can feel when we stop and observe them in the moment.

β€’ It is about the respect that we pay them by not interrupting them when we notice that they are engaged in an activity.

Episode 13 - 'Importance of movement for cognition and emotional regulation'15 Jan 202100:35:50

Thank you for joining me!

In this session we cover:

βœ” Movement is the beginning of cognition and emotional regulation

βœ” Recent research tells us that we have a brain, not to think, but to move.

βœ” From movement we learn everything else, however Western society is constructed in such a way that more importance is placed on thinking rather than moving.

βœ” We were born to move first. Β States of higher cognition develop and become available once we have achieved physical capability.

βœ”So, what does this mean for our children, and how can we support them?

Episode 12 - 'Creating our simple, ordered, accessible, Enriching Environment at home in a Montessori Way'08 Jan 202100:30:09

Thank you for joining me!

In this session we cover:

  • Creating an environment that is simple-ordered-accessible-beautiful by using what we have already at our fingertips and celebrating our cultural heritage 😍.
  • Montessori in the home can sometimes be thought of as purely a picture perfect set of shelves; and that this alienates families who believe that they do not have the means to buy 'all of that expensive Montessori stuff'.
  • In reality, nothing can be further from the truth.
  • Your home environment that you prepare for your child should be a reflection of your culture, your beliefs, your passions. It is not meant to look like Β the perfect and expensive looking environments that we see on social media. Β It should be simple, ordered, accessible and beautiful, and unique to you.
  • Whatever your cultural heritage, it is perfect, and should be celebrated. Β Our children need spaces created especially for them to promote their independence and capability, this is universal - however the style, the stamp, the essential of your home environment comes from you the individual, your family, your culture. Β Use what you have already at home, you don't need to buy anything else.
  • We also look at how we can be parents who empower our children; by stepping back, by observing our child and by listening.

Episode 11 - 'Creating a carpentry Workshop at home for your preschooler'08 Jan 202100:29:42

Thank you for joining me!

In this session we cover:

Setting up a real Workshop to support your Preschooler's need for physical, heavy work that involves full body movement:

  • How to tell if your child might be ready for these type of tools (there are two key things to look for, hand/eye coordination and impulse control).
  • What to introduce and in what order.
  • What ground rules to set around use of these tools.
  • Why this work is of paramount importance, particularly for high energy boys who need the balance of lots of gross motor movement in order to help them succeed with quieter/more academic work.
  • N. B this work is also for girls!

Episode 10 - 'Appreciating the natural heritage of the UAE'02 Jan 202100:25:12

Thank you for joining me!

In this session we cover:

  • This discussion was inspired by our screening of the film β€˜Childhood’. Β The film, set in a rural Norwegian kindergarten prompted many questions about how we can give our children real first-hand experiences in nature whilst living in a city created in a desert πŸ€”
  • From our questions and audience participation it seems that when we are not able to recreate the familiar natural world experiences that we know from our home countries we become disillusioned and seek out artificially created nature experiences instead.
  • I would like to offer a different path, one where we seek out what we can learn here in this desert landscape, from a terrain and environment that may be vastly different from our home countries.
  • My vision is for us to learn about what we have here, desert animals, desert insects, desert plants, all of the things that young children are obsessed about! Β Β So we can appreciate and honour the natural heritage on our doorstep. ❀️
  • We'll also discuss how 'being in nature' and offering first hand experiences calls for our absolute presence, and when we are present we can then learn from our children.
  • Can we commit to a complete digital detox when we are experiencing nature first hand?

Episode 9 - 'Handling conflict between young children'02 Jan 202100:36:53

Thank you for joining me!

In this session we cover:

  • Handling conflict with Piccolini and Pre-schoolers, Β between siblings and between friends.
  • Conflict between peers in the Piccolini and Pre-schoolers age groups is frequent and completely normal.
  • 9 times out of 10 conflict between young children gets physical because these age groups do not yet have the fully formed language skills in order to be able to negotiate and find resolutions to conflict peacefully.
  • Navigating conflict resolution in an empowering and respectful way.

Episode 8 - 'All about praise, how it can be a hindrance rather than a help'02 Jan 202100:28:24

Thank you for joining me!

In this session we cover:

  • The really interesting topic of praise. Β We do it because we naturally want to praise our children (because we all have amazing children, right? πŸ€”πŸ˜).
  • It feels as if we are bolstering their confidence, giving them self-esteem by praising them.
  • Some of us come from a background where our behaviour was controlled through punishment and scolding, so we of course are trying to create the opposite for our children in this generation.
  • However rewards and praise are the poisoned carrot.
  • In this session we discuss a different way of no punishment and no rewards, no shaming and no praising.
  • A way that develops a child's intrinsic sense of self-worth from within.

Episode 7 - Supporting Emotional Regulation in Young Children02 Jan 202100:35:49

Thank you for joining me!

In this session we cover:

  • Why emotional regulation is so crucial
  • What is going on in a child's brain and body during an upset.
  • How to do it, what to say, how to rΓ΄le model. It's pretty simple for all ages!
  • Our learning journey (or perhaps unlearning) that needs to take place before we will be able to fully step into this space of acceptance and collaborative approach to emotional regulation.
  • Feelings are called feelings because we're meant to 'feel' them! So why are we 'talking' about them to our children but not supporting them in actually 'feeling' them? πŸ€”
  • It is imperative it is to support our children in feeling their feelings firstly in their BODIES before we rush to label them, to intellectualise them, or apply logic and reasoning to them.
  • Supporting our children in emotional regulation is a partnership that begins in early childhood. Β And this is as relevant to a two year old as it is for a fifteen year old. πŸ’–
  • These are the real 'life skills' that we are not taught about in school!

Episode 6 - 'Sharing is not Caring'02 Jan 202100:45:29

In this session:

  • We question the belief that we must force sharing upon our children from a young age, and how we can allow ourselves to let this develop naturally with our loving support.
  • Understanding why an adult’s view of sharing is inappropriate for young children.
  • Creating a supportive home environment that allows qualities such as generosity and kindness to flourish.
  • Moving away from shaming or correcting an older child when they don’t feel like sharing.
  • Trusting that with our loving guidance, our children's innate goodness will unfold in time.

Embodied Parenting - Episode 9 - Season 217 Nov 202200:42:19

Embodied Parenting, what it is and why it'sΒ  important: Β Β Following on from my recent talk at the Parenthood UnConference in Abu Dhabi, in this Top Tip Tuesday Masterclass we dove into Embodied Parenting and what this means for us as Parents and Educators. Β Β

We looked at: Β Β

βœ“ What Embodied Parenting is and how it strengthens relationships with our children. Β

Β βœ“ How understanding ourselves helps us to connect more deeply with our children. Β Β

βœ“ The five gifts of Embodied Parenting and Embodied Educating where children reflect back to us our learning, our growth, our gifts. Β

Β In February 2023 I will be launching a deep-dive 7 month Embodied Parenting- Embodied Educating Mentoring Programme! πŸ₯°βœ¨οΈΒ  Β Β This Programme has the potential to transform your relationship with yourself and your inner child, nourish and nurture your parent-child dynamicΒ  and cultivate deep connections with the children in your nursery or classroom.Β  Β Β More information to follow shortly about this pioneering Mentoring Programme πŸ˜€.Β  Β Β

Episode 5 - 'Why we do not interfere when our child is completing a task for themselves'01 Jan 202100:29:40

Thank you for joining me!

In this session we cover:

  • Why offering to help is actually a hindrance because it breaks their concentration.
  • How offering to help them infers that they cannot complete the task, which lowers, rather than increases their self confidence.
  • What we can say when they do complete their task; so that we are honouring and celebrating their unique learning journey. (Rather than giving them praise that makes it all about us).
  • Why sitting close by to them, quietly observing them, is the most powerful support we could ever offer.πŸ™πŸ½

Episode 4 - 'How to support our little people with intense feelings during lockdown'01 Jan 202100:29:32

Thank you for joining me!

In this session we cover:

  • At this time of unprecedented challenge for humanity, for communities, for families, for parents and for children there are some big feelings being expressed by our little people.
  • Our children may have seemed to be ok at the beginning of lockdown, however as this period of quarantine and uncertainty extends for all of us, new and undesirable behaviour may be appearing.
  • Know that this is normal and all that they need is our support.
  • But how to give it? What can we do to support them when we cannot to do anything to change the situation, assuage their fears or 'make it better'? πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ
  • The empowering answer is that there is a huge amount that we can do. And what we do now will make a wealth of difference in their lives and their experience of this tumultuous time.

Hope this is useful!

Episode 3 - 'Why we don't correct our children when they get something wrong/confused/mixed up''01 Jan 202100:29:23

Thank you for joining me!

In this session we cover:

  • The reflex action we can have as adults, this impulse to correct when our children get something 'wrong' . Why does it bother us so much when their T shirt is on back to front? πŸ€”. It really doesn't matter in the big scheme of things does it. πŸ€·πŸΌβ€β™€οΈ
  • It can be alot for our ego (and feel very uncomfortable) to NOT correct when our child wears their shoes on opposite feet or writes letters/numbers back to front or upside down.
  • This is about our child and allowing their sense of self to unfold. The fact they have tried and achieved it in their own way is immensely powerful.
  • Not correcting asks us to trust that "when the child is ready she will do it properly".
  • It is important for us to honour their path, their learning journey, and their 'mistakes'.

Thank you for joining me!

In this session we cover:

Help me to do it myself!

This is the rallying call of every young child, even infants!

  • It is humbling to see how capable even the youngest child can be when s/he is given the opportunity.
  • It is astonishing to see how the simplest arrangement of a few key items at our child's height can support, empower and settle them.
  • We offer our littlest children an environment that is designed with their capability and self-direction in mind, so they can unfold into capable human beings.
  • There are lots of small changes that we can make today to make our homes really child-friendly, and lots of big changes too!

Why 'heavy work' is so important for young children - - Episode 8 - Season 2 26 Oct 202200:21:03

Thank you for joining me!

Physical effort is really important for young children and in this week's Masterclass we discussed why it is so important and how we can facilitate this at home:

βœ” Why young children love and NEED real, hard work like this: pushing, pulling, lifting, dragging things that are often "too heavy" for them. (panting and being out of breath is good!)

βœ” The importance of this work for our child's development.

βœ” How we can provide opportunities for these experiences easily and inexpensively at home.

βœ” What size/shape of objects are the most satisfying for them to manoeuvre with.

Montessori Babies - Episode 7 - Season 219 Oct 202200:39:39
Thank you for joining me for this Top Tip Tuesday Masterclass, in this session we covered: πŸ’š What is different about the Montessori approach to babies, which begins from learning about the Human Tendencies. ❀️ Offering freedom of movement from the very first days of life. (sounds crazy right?!). πŸ’› The beauty of offering a diminished environment to allow a baby to unfold in alignment with their natural development. πŸ’— How we can move from a position of wanting to contain babies, to respecting them, and seeing how capable they are. 🧑 When we observe to meet them where they are, then we can follow their natural path of development joyfully. How can I hold boundaries and parent gently?19 Oct 202200:49:31
Thank you for being here! In this Live we explored this brilliant follower question: How can I hold boundaries and parent gently? This question took us down many paths and many trains of thought. We had some great engagement from viewers and it really was a deep dive into: βœ“Gentle parenting βœ“Connection as our guiding light in the adult/child relationship. βœ“How consistency, predictability and routine/rhythm create a sense of safety. βœ“How and why young children push against our boundaries. βœ“Placing ourself in our child's shoes and tending to our own inner child. βœ“How our own wounds will trigger unwanted reactions from us in the heat of the moment. βœ“The "energy" and spaciousness that we are seeking to create around our parenting and our interactions with our child. ❀ Non-violent communication (or giraffe language) with children ❀ - Episode 5 - Season 229 Sep 202200:42:11

During this session we discussed non-violent communication, how, and why we practise it.

How learning this language of life improves communication, invites us into listening and speaking from the heart, and being with each other with presence and understanding

Giraffes have the largest hearts of any land animals, so non-violent communication for children calls upon them (and us) to step into being as big-hearted as giraffes. β€οΈπŸ¦’

We discussed examples of bringing non-violent communication into our homes Β and Communities as the foundation of the adult-child relationship; expressing needs and listening to others needs.

I highly recommend the book by Marshall B Rosenberg - Non Violent Communication, a language of life. https://a.co/d/hGMezmW

Non-violent communication offers a level of consciousness whereby people feel seen and heard; restoring care and connection in our families, classrooms, groups and communities. πŸ™πŸ½πŸ˜

Help - my child keeps interrupting! Episode 4 - Season 2 - Top Tip Tuesday Masterclass21 Sep 202200:37:04

Thank you for joining me!

In this week's Top Tip Tuesday Masterclass we discussed interrupting.

One of my clients has asked me for guidance in supporting children with interruptions (her children are 10, 9 and 6).

In this session we covered

  • What are realistic and unrealistic expectations and how we can tailor them in alignment with our child's age and developmental stage
  • Tips that can support our children in moving towards fewer interruptions (as they develop and mature).
  • Trust that with role modelling, space and time that our children will find their way.
  • Most importantly, making time and space so our childrens' voices are valued and heard as much as the adults' voices in our homes, schools and communities.

The Magic in non-correction - Episode 3 - Series 214 Sep 202200:19:14

Thank you all for joining me for this Top Tip Tuesday Masterclass:

During this session we found the magic in non-correction:

Recognising that our child needs to experience the world in their own time, in their own way, a way that follows their natural development is a cornerstone of Montessori philosophy.

This 'recognising' extends to not correcting our child when they get something 'wrong'.

It can almost be a reflex action for us, this impulse to correct them, and yet, it is so rewarding when we don't, and we give them the freedom to work things out themselves.

We discussed how hard it can be, and feel very uncomfortable) to NOT correct when our child wears their shoes on opposite feet, wears their T shirt back to front or writes letters/numbers back to front or upside down.

Our conditioning, our own friendliness with error and cultural norms all contribute to how we feel and react when our urge is to correct.

Our invitation is to be there and witness, really see what our child has accomplished in the moment. Β When our children are given space and time to unfold they are immensely powerful .

Not correcting asks us to trust that "when the child is ready she will do it properly".

It is important for us to honour their path, their learning journey, and their 'mistakes'.

As always, the energy that we bring to any interaction with our children is more potent that finding the right words/script to say. Β Β A warm smile and noticing our child’s body language is open, joyful and proud when they have achieved something is enough.

Let me know that you took from this session, and I look forward to seeing you

The Power of Rhythm and Ritual - how a simple whiteboard can transform connection and cooperation with your children! - Episode 2 - Series 201 Sep 202200:34:43

❀ Intentional Parenting: the power of rhythm and ritual πŸ₯°

In this week's Top Tip Tuesday's Masterclass we discussed how something as simple as a family whiteboard can support the consistency, predictability and routine that every child needs . Β We had some beautiful embodiment pieces, feeling into our intention, our resistance when in a power struggle with our child, and visualising how we want to feel in our parenting.

Here is what we covered during our Masterclass:

🌼 This whiteboard is our new thing: myself, Olivia and Harry each writing on there what we'd like to do each day, what things we already have planned, what our commitments are.

🌿 Each of us have a voice, each of us can take ownership of our responsibilities (at a developmentally appropriate level), we decide  between the three of us what is possible and what is not possible.

🌺 It's not achievable to be able to meet everyone's needs every day; but the power in this approach is that everyone gets to be seen and heard, everyone's voice matters.

🍁 For Elementary aged children, connection collaboration and cooperation is cultivated when they are part of decision-making processes, their strong sense of justice and need for fairness dictates this.

πŸ’« They will resist arbitrary decisions, rules and boundaries - our role is involve them in family life, the logistics,Β  the planning,Β  what we consider to be the "boring stuff".Β Β

πŸ•Έ They are often more creative and more resourceful in problem-solving and cooperation as they don't have the decades of bad habits that we do 😝, they are able to look upon things with fresh eyes.Β

😚 We can cultivate autonomy, empathy, collaboration, responsibility and a sense of agency just from something as simple as a daily whiteboard!

This week we covered rudeness, sass, talking back, disrespect, and looked at the following areas:Β

❀ Where does it come from?

❀ Where do I draw the line between my child's healthy self-expression and disrespect?

❀ How do find my calm?

❀ Within each segment is an invitation into a  embodiment practice of intention setting, identifying feelings within the body and visualising release and new outcomes.

Episode 87: The Montessori Sensitive Periods - Small objects/details17 May 202200:25:48

Episode 87: The Montessori Sensitive Periods - Small objects/details - Part 6 of a 6 part Series:

What a fun way to end our Ramadan series on the Sensitive Periods!

This evening we focussed on the Sensitivity to Small Objects and discussed:

πŸ’• Why it’s such a fun stage (as we have the opportunity to experience the joy and wonder of the world through the eyes of a young child).

😊 Why it’s really important for us to immerse ourselves in this stage, be with them in the moment, cultivate their curiosity, slow down for their exploration.

🐜How and why a young child can focus on an ant for what seems like hours!

πŸ€“ What skills they are developing and honing as they spot, pick up and explore those tiny things that they find.

🀹🏼 Balancing our need to keep them safe whilst providing opportunities for them to fulfil this drive; exploring small objects is an important part of the child's work at this age!

Parts 1 - 5 of the Sensitive Period Series are Order (Episode 82) Movement (Episode 83), Language (Episode 84), Social Aspects (Episode 85), and Refinement of the Senses (Episode 86) andare all available here on IGTV with captions, YouTube, Spotify and ITunes.

The Montessori Sensitive Periods: Refinement of the Senses.12 May 202200:32:56

In Part 5 of our 6 part series on the Sensitive Periods we covered Refinement of the Senses, from 0-5 years old.

A child learns through all five of their senses in the early years; they are naturally drawn to and fascinated by experiences in taste, smell, touch, sounds and weight.

How we can offer multi-sensorial first hand experiences as part of daily life (at home, it's not expensive or complicated!).

How setting our intention to slow down and gently draw attention to the above experiences with our child can support them; it's simple yet really effective. 😍

Parts 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the Sensitive Period Series are Order (Episode 82) Movement (Episode 83), Language (Episode 84) and Social Aspects (Episode 85), and are all available here on IGTV with captions, YouTube, Spotify and ITunes.

Episode 85 - The Montessori Sensitive Periods - The Social Aspects of Life26 Apr 202200:32:22

The Montessori Sensitive Periods - The Social Aspects of Life - this week for our Top Tip Tuesday on Instagram Live we discussed the Sensitive Period that develops from around 2 years onwards, being sociable.

We looked at how the play prior to this point is solitary or parallel, and the shift that occurs when children seek to actively engage others in play.

Why this stage is important, and how we can support our child whilst they balance their need for socialising whilst giving them the tools they need to be part of a Community.

How we can cultivate respect of others, empathy and caring during this crucial time when

We had a great question about how to support children who have picked up inappropriate language and are using it to get a reaction from adults.

Part 5 of our 6 part series on the Montessori Sensitive Periods will be on the β€˜Refinement of the Senses’ next Tuesday 3rd May at 8:30pm GST/

Episode 84 - The Montessori Sensitive Periods: Language19 Apr 202200:44:48

In the third episode in our #ramadan2022 special series on the Montessori Sensitive Periods, we focussed on language.

Dr Montessori identified the period from birth to six years as a critical time in the development of language.

During this IGLIVE session we explored:

* How language essentially conveys joy, the words of joy we use in a child’s life are more important than the words of correction.

*  From gurgling 😍 to swearing 😬 , how language develops during the early years from utero to age 6.

* how to enrich your child's language and communication learning experience, through the richness of vocabulary that you use.

* The misunderstood toddler years, how a lack of ability to verbalise is the main reason for tantrums and physical behaviour in toddlers.

* multilingual households. Β One person, one language is the recommended approach to cultivate multilingualism.

We had some great audience questions too - thank you so much for joining me!

Episode 83 - The Montessori Sensitive Periods: Movement14 Apr 202200:38:47

In the second episode in our six part series on the Montessori Sensitive Periods, we focus on movement.

Essentially, movement is the foundation for all development. The young child's need for movement is critical, from birth!

And coincidentally arguably the most difficult Sensitive Period to follow in Western society as the majority of "stuff" for babies and young children is designed to limit their movement (for our convenience) rather than facilitate and encourage it!

During this Live we discussed:

βœ“ What freedom of movement means in the early years

βœ“ Why it's important

βœ“ How we can facilitate it

βœ“ We also had some great questions from viewers, thank you so much!

Episode 82 - Sense of Order in Young Children- Part 1/6 of a series on Montessori Sensitive Periods05 Apr 202200:40:17

The first in my six part IGLives on the Sensitive Periods for #ramadan2022 - we begin with sense of order. πŸ₯° Β

The Sensitive Periods are one of the lynchpins of Montessori philosophy that help us to understand young children, their needs within the early years, and thus how we can support them.Β

For this year's #ramadanchallenge I am excited to be running Top Tip Tuesday on Instagram Live from Tuesday 5th April to Tuesday 10th May as a six part series focussing on these "windows of opportunity".

Here in Part 1 we covered: Β

πŸ’— The Sensitive Periods, what they are and how they are relevant to understanding children. Β

πŸ˜… Sense of order - what does it mean in real life?! How it is important for developing internal order, how order supports sequencing (foundation for mathematics). How a strong sense of order can mean immaculately made beds, folded laundry and neatly lined up shoes! Β

😊 How an intense period of sense of order, coupled with developing language skills in a toddler can manifest as physical behaviour such as hitting, pushing and biting.

πŸ’• How a strong sense of order can be totally misinterpreted by adults as a child being spoilt or bratty. Β

✨ The many ways in which we can support and nurture our child during this Sensitive Period.

Episode 81 Sandtimers - an essential item in your parenting toolkit!29 Mar 202200:29:02

Sandtimers are essential for life with a Toddler (and older children too!) For Top Tip Tuesday on Instagram Live this week I talked through how to use sandtimers:

> Setting loving boundaries - 'you can swing for ten minutes, and once the sand is finished it's time to give this other little girl a turn'.

> Ease transitions - 'in five minutes, once the sand is finished we are going to put on our shoes and jump in the car'.

> Defer wishes. 'I'm going to be five minutes preparing supper, when the sand is finished I'll come and read with you.'

It's simple to implement, respectful (as it meets your child where they are) and effective.
They support a young child's need for consistency, predictability and routine in their life.

*I still use them with my 5 & 7 year olds, so it's not too late if you are past the toddler stage, and I included lots of different examples in the Live above.

Episode 80 - Creativity in the Young Child22 Mar 202200:28:54

For Top Tip Tuesday on Instagram Live this week we talked about Creativity in the young child; how it develops, why it's important and how (and why) to offer child-led opportunities for creativity.

✨ Creative expression is an important part of self-expression for the young child.

πŸ’ž Creativity for the young child is process driven (not outcome driven), so they are creative for the experience, not with the purpose of creating an end product.

β˜€οΈ There are lots of fine motor skills used in creativity and this all supports our child's path to writing.

Introducing the Raise Change Makers Journey12 Jul 202300:24:46

❀️ INTRODUCING THE RAISE CHANGE MAKERS JOURNEY ✨️🌎

This is not your usual eco/green type of community where you’d learn practical tips and do’s and don’ts –

It is much more than that. It is much more than sharing knowledge about sustainability.Β

It is also about raising children using a parenting philosophy that is scientifically proven, time tested and grows us into the best version of ourselves as Parents and Caregivers.Β

It is about self-care, self-love and being a whole human.

Β It is about connection to ourselves, connection to our children, the kind of mindfulness we need within before we could think about being mindful about our planet and the environment.Β

It all starts within us, breaking those inner barriers so that our children grow up naturally seeing and experiencing the connection to the planet and humanity.Β

It is a safe space to support conscious, high-quality bonding between parents and children while raising little change makers who care about all life on Earth.Β

Charlotte from @enrichingenvironments and Ivana @ivybogbu have teamed up to create a comprehensive guide that combines our expertise, ensuring you have the knowledge and tools to raise future change makers who are kind to themselves, others, and the environment.

Episode 78 - Toilet Learning - The Montessori Way01 Mar 202200:29:41

For this week's Top Tip Tuesday we discussed Toilet Learning; usually approached in Western culture with fear and dread, or with a controlling 'the child must not have an accident' mindset.

We had a ton of fab questions from viewers and covered the following points:

😍 In the Montessori way, toilet learning is seen as a natural developmental stage, much like crawling or walking.

✨ We provide the environment, provide opportunities and the child guides their own learning at their own pace.

😻 Less stress, no pressure on child or parent and lots of opportunities for learning and connecting together.

My 90 minute Toilet Learning Online Workshop will be launched in late March so get in touch if you'd like to be put on the waiting list for that.

In the second of our special two part series on Sibling Dynamics, this week we focussed on conflict resolution.Β

During this session we covered the following: Β Β

😊 When/if to intervene. (take a deep breath, recognise what emotions we are bringing to this dynamic between our children).

Β πŸ€” How to intervene. (listen more, talk less πŸ˜… - cultivating problem solving skills and emotional intelligence). Β

🎈 How to handle proclamations such as "I hate the baby" or "I wish I didn't have a sister". (offering empathy, validation and compassion).

πŸ’ How to create an environment that cultivates patience and understanding from the start; whilst honouring the individuality and needs of all children in the family. Β Β

Episode 76 - Nurturing a strong sibling bond08 Feb 202200:31:26

Developing a deep bond between our children is one of the most rewarding and sometimes tricky to navigate areas in parenting. Β

During this Instagram Live we talked about nurturing the precious sibling bond from the start; from the language we use and the support we offer to each child as they navigate their place within the family. Β

We focussed on three key areas:Β

1) Not forcing siblings to 'share'.Β

2) Nurturing non-competition by not comparing one to another.Β

3) Highlighting to each sibling the importance they have in the other sibling's life.  For example for a newborn and a toddler, we draw to the toddler's attention that baby is always watching and listening to them.🀩

Β Β We looked at how Montessori principles underpin the values of mutual respect and understanding, and offer a framework for parents that can be beautifully applied in the home environment. Β

Part 2 of this special 2 part series on Sibling Bonds will be focussed on managing sibling conflict and will be on Tuesday 22nd February at 8:30pm GST. Β

Episode 75 - hitting, biting and pushing - how to support our Toddlers!02 Feb 202200:28:58

Top Tip Tuesday on Instagram Live last night on physical behaviour in toddlers.

It's normal, it happens! It is our response to this normal Toddler occurrence that is important ❀️🌟

Three years ago I had a biter and a hitter! It was tough at the time, playdates were stressful, my child wasn't coping and the other children involved were upset 😞

In this Live we'll discuss :

Why it happens, why it's normal (brain development, impulse control and language/communication skills)

How to support your child (not blame or shame them).

The hitter/biter is out of control when they do those things; it is a very stressful/scary place for a little person to be in.

It passes! Being on the other side of hitting/biting.

😍 How our empathy and support during these stressful times help to develop emotional regulation in our child.

Episode 74 - Play & playfulness for connection & cooperation25 Jan 202200:31:34

During this Top Tip Tuesday on Instagram Live we focussed on the value of play and playfulness for fostering connection and cooperation with our children. Β

We discussed the following key points: Β

πŸ‘£ All play is valuable, vital in fact, children learn through play in the early years. Β Β Β

✨ Amongst many other benefits, children practise their social skills, process their emotions, problem solve, and have fun - all in the name of play.   😍 Really playing with our children fully engaging in fun, nonsense and often silly behaviour is healing, connecting and joyful.

πŸ™ˆ For the most part, parenting should be us enjoying spending time with our children, absorbing their uninhibited joy for life and their limitless capacity for fun and mischief. Β Β

πŸ’– Play and playfulness as a beautiful way to connect to our Toddlers (and all our children!), whilst supporting collaboration. Β Playfulness dissolves power struggles and helps us move through tricky moments in the day with a greater ease (and less stress!). Β We become detectives to find out what type of playfulness is most effective with our child (silly, walk, voices, dances etc). Β

Episode 73 - 'Sharing is NOT caring'18 Jan 202200:38:01

This week on Top Tip Tuesday we dove
deep into why making young children share isn't appropriate and how we can support them in this.

We covered:

πŸ’•Understanding why an adult’s view of sharing is inappropriate for young children.

🌻Creating a supportive home environment that allows qualities such as generosity and kindness to flourish.

🌸Moving away from shaming or correcting an older child when they don’t feel like sharing.

☺️Trusting that our children's innate goodness will unfold in time.

Episode 72 - Introducing my Montessori Nanny Training Programme16 Jan 202200:19:29

During this IG Live we discussed the curriculum for our forthcoming Montessori Nanny Training Programme: Β

Session 1: Sunday 20th February - 2:30 - 4:30pm Dubai timeΒ

βœ“ Brief introduction to the Montessori approach and the value it offers to children of all cultures around the world.Β

βœ“ Child development needs in the context of Montessori (movement, free exploration, respectful communication).Β

βœ“ Guidance on respectful communication. Supporting caregivers in guiding children in empowering ways. (alternatives to good girl, naughty girl, threats, etc).Β

βœ“ Guidance in respectful interaction (holding by the hand rather than the wrist or arm, respectful caregiving in diapering, honouring a child’s body boundaries, getting down to their level, not interrupting/interfering with their work or play).Β

Session 2: Sunday 20th March- 2:30 - 4:30pm Dubai timeΒ

βœ“ Meals - eating - snacking. Supporting children in healthy eating habits from an early age, developing fine motor skills, hand/eye coordination and concentration through self-feeding and food preparation (even with babies!). Β Β Developing a love a good food and the community of a shared family meal.

βœ“ Giving children the freedom and space they need to move, play and explore. How to support their curiosity whilst keeping them safe.Β

βœ“ A simple guide on establishing a daily rhythm, and preparing the home environment in a way that promotes autonomy, exploration and joy!Β

βœ“ Homework and reflections for Nannies to encourage the new skills and principles learnt to become part of daily home life.Β

βœ“ Printable checksheets to display at home to support the whole family in keeping on track!Β

Β Here's what other families have said about the impact this Programme had for them: Β

πŸ’—"Miranda has so embraced the Montessori philosophy since coming to the course on the weekend, it's been remarkable! You are a magician!" (Kate-Dubai) Β

❣️"I’m so happy we sent Liza! She came home so happy, enthusiastic, informed and full of ideas for some changes we can make in our home. I can already tell you covered many things I was trying to explain and muddle my way through, and she really β€œgets” it. Episode 71 - Introducing my Montessori Conscious Parenting Programme16 Jan 202200:22:45

During this session I talked through the main topics of the the forthcoming Programme and how beautifully Montessori aligns with Conscious Parenting and vice versa. Β

πŸ’ž Montessori Conscious Parenting offers us the opportunity to see our children as our teachers, not the other way round.

Β Β β˜€οΈ Montessori Conscious Parenting invites us to speak, to think and to act in a different way, to ourselves, to our children, and all those we come into contact with, following the three key Montessori principles of respecting ourselves, others and the environment. Β

🌍 Montessori offers us the gift of being able to contribute to a more peaceful and harmonious world.

🌺 With a focus on connection, simplicity and healing; we seek to remove any barriers that we have to fully seeing and accepting our children as they are, not how we want them to be.

πŸ’ Within this process of accepting the lessons that our children are here to teach us, we have the opportunity for immense growth and transformation, healing generational patterns of hurt. Β

Episode 70 - How to enjoy the holiday season without becoming frazzled and fed up! πŸŽ„βœ¨16 Jan 202200:31:51

This week's Top Tip Tuesday was on how to enjoy the holiday season without becoming frazzled and fed up! πŸŽ„βœ¨Β

❣️ We looked at how we can approach Christmas (or any other festival) in a way that allows each family member a little, space, time or rhythm (whatever they need according to their age!) to enjoy this busy and sometimes overstimulating time, in fullness.

We talked about: Β

🎊 Preparing our child in advance for travelling to other's houses or receiving guests, what they can expect from Great Uncle Alfred with the very loud voiceπŸ˜‰ Β

🀩 Maintaining rhythm and ritual that provide consistency throughout the season even when away from home or with other family members.

😘'Translating' for our child and the new adults for those awkward moments where a relative may have an expectation of behaviour from your child that they are not ready for.

πŸŽ‰ Explaining our parenting approach to others in a way that is non-judgmental and easy to understand. Β

Preparing ourselves with our partner by setting our intention of our hopes for the holidays and how our child can be best supported.Β

Episode 69 - Cultivating child-led holiday traditions in your family16 Jan 202200:21:52

For Top Tip Tuesday Β this week we spoke about the holiday season! Β Inspired by our conversation on the Montessori Show last Friday with @jeannemariepaynel and @themontessorinotebook; this week for Top Tip Tuesday let's discuss simple holiday traditions that we can start with our children from the early years. Β

We discussed Santa, do we pretend he's real, do we say he's not?Β

How do we maintain the magic of Santa whilst staying aligned with our principles of being honest with our children? Β

I feel that we can really get ourselves unnecessarily tied up in knots about the 'right' thing to say about Santa. πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ Β

The Christmas season is a multi sensory experience for us all, we can enjoy the magic of the sights, sounds and smells for what it is in the moment. Β If we meet our child where they are, at their level of understanding then we won't go far wrong.πŸ’–Β

Sustainable Families - with @ivyogbu - Episode 14- Season 211 Mar 202300:55:53

For our Top Tip Tuesday Masterclass this evening on Sustainable Families. I was joined by the wonderful @ivyogbu to dive into the positive changes we can all make for a more sustainable future for us all. Β Clarity, Practicality and a Call to Action. This is what we need to be able to discuss, expand and move forward with the complex topic of Sustainability. Β We opened our hearts and cleared our minds to have a shift in the way we FEEL about sustainability, and how this can translate to simple, tangible daily actions that become part of the fabric of our family. Β We join hands as we raise this next generation of capable, compassionate, contributors.Β

Β "Sustainable development is about making sure that we can meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It's not just about the environment, although the environment is a big part of it. Sustainable development also involves economic and social factors." Β

Thank you for joining me @ivyogbu.Β
