Why the 3rd-5th STEM Planning Workshop is Perfect for You-STEM Spotlight #203 Mar 202300:09:42

How can you make your STEM lessons rigorous and also make those cross-curricular connections?

This structure has changed the way I plan for my upper elementary students throughout the school year. While it does take more work up front, students have PLENTY to work on throughout the week and see the world in new ways.

How can 2-hours of your time impact the way you plan STEM for 3-5 for the rest of the school year?

Join me live, Saturday, March 4, 9:00-am-11:00am MST for this 3-5 STEM Planning Virtual Workshop

You’ll walk away with resources and 2 plans for a grade level of your choice while also building a foundation for future units. Can’t make it live? It will be recorded so you can view in your own time.

Hope to see you there!

65. How Can Students Record a Podcast?27 Feb 202300:21:50

In today’s episode, I share how I plan a student podcasting lesson about light pollution and how we figure that out through the Engineering Design Process. In this lesson, students explore what light pollution is, the effects of light pollution, and possible solutions. They then share all of this information through a mini-podcast. With their podcast, they take on the role of a citizen scientist. This lesson is a cool way for students to share their learning and learn a medium they might not have heard of or tried before.

61. Mindfulness & Self Care Techniques for Teachers in STEM with Jen Rafferty13 Feb 202300:32:38

You may have read the title of today’s episode and thought, how does this relate to STEM? Friend, keep listening because this is a wonderful episode that every teacher needs to hear. Stepping into a new role like elementary STEM can be completely overwhelming. Many of you are like me and have transitioned from a classroom of your own with 25-plus students to teaching all the students in the school with little to no curriculum and lots of fancy tools.

Well, today’s guest completely understands that. Today I am speaking with Jen Rafferty from the Empowered educator. Jen shares about mindset as a teacher, different types of stress, setting boundaries, and self care techniques for teachers. You definitely want to listen to the end and also take notes because she has wonderful explanations of all the topics that we discussed today.

59. 3 Classroom Guest Speaker Ideas for STEM06 Feb 202300:17:25

It's important to have guest experts speak with your students in the STEM space. While the experiences that they are having in your classroom are powerful, you can bring another dimension to their learning by hosting guest experts. In addition, students should be exposed to role models who are different from them so that they respect the ideas, abilities, and potential of others. I'm sharing three classroom guest speaker ideas for STEM in today's episode.

57. The Mars Rover Project and GOOD NIGHT OPPY with NASA Engineer Bekah Sosland Siegfriedt30 Jan 202300:49:50

Today's episode is special because I had the opportunity to collaborate with Wonder Workshop, the robotics company, and EdWeb to interview Bekah Sosland Siegfriedt, a current flight director at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She was one of the featured team members in Amazon Prime's GOOD NIGHT OPPY and got to work with space rovers Spirit and Opportunity.

This episode was a live webinar; the video replay is available and linked in the show notes. At the end of the conversation with Bekah, the moderator for this webinar, Bryan Miller, the Senior Director of Global Strategic Outreach at Wonder Workshop and was a guest on the show last year, asks Bekah some great questions to close out the webinar.

I learned so much in this interview. I am so grateful for this opportunity and so excited to be able to share this with you today. I know you're definitely going to enjoy it.

48. STEM and Literacy Integration Ideas26 Dec 202200:25:18

Even though it's not in the name, literacy definitely has a place within STEM challenges. In fact, I would even say that STEM and literacy are a perfect match.

The audio from today’s episode is from an online summit I presented at in the past at one of the Wonder Workshop International STEAM Summits.

In this episode, I'll be sharing five different ways that you can combine STEM and literacy together and make the perfect pairing in ways that you might not have thought of before.

47. How is Stop Motion Used in the Classroom?22 Dec 202200:25:59

Stop motion requires minimal materials for students to be successful but involves a high level of creativity and critical thinking.

This episode is a presentation from an online summit I spoke at in the past, the Teach with Tech Conference.

In this episode, I provide an intro to stop motion animation, a list of tools to get started, an explanation of student examples, and ways to extend this lesson even further with other resources.

Today is a special episode that you helped me plan. I told you to ask me anything. You sent me questions on Instagram and via email.

I’m answering those questions in today’s episode. Some of these questions are STEM-related, but some are personal, and I’m answering them all.
