In this episode, I finish telling you what I would have done differently, 'if I knew then what I know now'.

Is There Really Legionnaires' Disease in My Potting Soil or Compost?23 Sep 201900:33:10

There are so many reasons I don't buy packaged potting soil or packaged compost but there is a new reason and that is Legionnaires' Disease.

Only a few countries have requirements to put warning labels on potting soil and compost packaging.    Here in the US I didn't even know this was a thing!

Yikes!!  Is this really a thing?  Legionella Bacteria is not something that has something I thought I would be talking about in regards to gardening.

I have picked up the phone to let people know that I love that are gardeners to warn them, especially if they are immunocompromised.

Here are just a few of the articles, videos, and posts I saw.

031: How Many Plants Should I Plant to get XX Number of Pounds of...20 May 201900:46:00

Have you ever heard of a Garden Calculator?

On today's episode, we are talking about "Garden Calculators" and I share my strategy for deciding how many plants to plant if you want to achieve a certain amount of yield from your crops.

I know I sort of picked on a little innocent Artichoke today but the list was in alphabetical order and well... it just kind of got caught in the cross-fire.   To all the artichokes of the world, my apologies.

Be sure to email me at nannette@edifulgardens.com if you would like me to send you the modified excel spreadsheet, where I break yield from one plant (according to the 1978 data provided by Smith and Stoner)

030: I Have this Bug on my Plant What Should I do or What Should I Spray on it16 May 201900:21:35

F.A.Q's I was asked this question 4 or 5 times today.  I guess it Tis the Season!

So I decided to do a real quick down and dirty bonus episode today.

I try to be proactive but sometimes we must go into a reactive mode.
.
This is what I do about pests in the garden and why.

I mentioned BT in the podcast as an approved organic pesticide and why I don't use it. Here is one scientific paper performed by the European Food Safety Authority and the U.S. National Library of Medicine Institute of Health.   If you perform your own search, which I highly recommend in any case, I believe you will find there are a lot of sites screaming "The Sky Isn't Falling!"  Well at least in the U.S. anyway.

028: What's the Best Bare Soil Strategy If You Are Starting From Scratch06 May 201901:02:12

On today's episode, we are talking about the best strategy for getting to the bare soil.

This is not a strategy for the fastest way to get to bare soil.
This is a strategy for getting to the best bare soil.

This soil will be rich in plant nutrients - which means no fertilizing.
This soil will hold more water - which means less watering.
This soil will have probiotics that prevent pests and diseases - which means none of the "cides" on your homegrown food.

This soil may take a little longer to get established but it will take less time and work from you, the gardener, over time.

This soil takes care of you, instead of you taking care of it.
