| How to Embrace the Shades of Grey, When ’All or Nothing Thinking’ is Sabotaging Eating Disorder Recovery | 19 Jul 2023 | 00:25:07 | |
A Bite Size episode! It is incredibly common for people with eating disorders to struggle with 'all or nothing thinking'. This frequently leads to 'good phases' and the contrasting, wholly chaotic and distressing 'bad phases' and this approach doesn't support balanced mental and physical well-being. In this episode, I talk about 'all or nothing thinking'. I discuss the ways that it can be so detrimental in recovery and explore how to take steps towards embracing the grey, along with greater contentment and peace. I hope that you enjoy it.

| An Incredible Journey of Parenting Two Daughters with Anorexia and a Mother’s Journey of Overhauling her own Dieting and Body Issues, with Kristi Koeter | 15 Jul 2023 | 00:45:54 | |
Today, I’m talking to Kristi Koeter. Kristi is a former journalist and personal trainer, marketer, and now author, based in the Austin, Texas, area. Two of Kristi’s three children have had anorexia nervosa, and both completed Partial Hospitalisation Programs in the U.S. Her oldest daughter, now 19, has been stable in her recovery for several years, whilst her youngest, 14 years old, is still early in her recovery. When Kristi’s youngest daughter’s weight started dropping rapidly after she came out of treatment, Kristi knew that she needed to take more proactive action. She also ended up having to take a really hard look at herself; her own eating and body image issues. Using the Maudsley Method, and her daughter’s care team, this has really supported her daughter in transitioning in her recovery. In Kristi’s just-released, co-authored book called Show Your Work: Successful Women Share the Bumpy Roads to Their Biggest Wins, she discusses the realization that in order to help her youngest daughter recover from her eating disorder, she had to address her own years of disordered eating and overexercise. She is also writing Almost Sated on Substack, where she is chronicling her transition to intuitive eating and healthy movement. She knows that it’s possible for parents to help their children even if they are struggling with their own eating issues, but she has felt passionate about working on herself to support this whole process. When Kristi’s not writing, she is mountain biking, hiking, or spending time with my kids and new husband. So Kristi and her daughters are on an incredible journey. Kristi herself has had to do some extraordinarily difficult and challenging work in facing her own demons in this process, which she is doing wholeheartedly. I absolutely commend Kristi for her vulnerability and openness in talking about all of this. In the episode today, Kristi talks about: -

| The Limitations of Body Mass Index (BMI) - Eating Disorder Recovery and Wider Health | 12 Jul 2023 | 00:27:29 | |
A Bite Size episode! The Body Mass Index (BMI) has rightly come under increased scrutiny in recent years. It is outdated, not relevant for many individuals and can actually encourage disordered eating behaviours and poor body image. However, it continues to be used in eating disorder recovery and as a general marker of health, albeit a weight-focused one. In this episode, I explore the history of BMI and its limitations, whilst discussing alternative markers of health.

| Understanding More About the Psychology of Eating Disorders | 10 Jun 2023 | 00:16:36 | |
People that develop eating disorders tend to be sensitive souls, who feel their feelings very deeply. Ultimately this is a super-power and means that individuals are hugely empathetic, kind and compassionate beings. But it also means that the world can feel overwhelming and tricky to navigate at times. It can exacerbate issues with low self-esteem, people pleasing, perfectionism and in managing emotions. In this episode, I focus in on pleasing and perfectionist traits to hopefully help those with eating disorders feel better understood and to offer carers and loved ones further insight. Of course, I am generalising in this episode and every person’s experience is unique, so if you don’t relate, trust your inner wisdom and your own path. I hope that you enjoy the episode. I explain how you can begin to tune into your emotions and find healthier ways of coping, rather than restricting or overeating. I hope that you enjoy this episode. | Competition and Comparison with Others and Eating Disorders | 31 May 2023 | 00:19:48
A Bite Size episode exploring comparisons and competitiveness in people with eating disorders. It’s very common that people with eating disorders can feel competitive with one another. Eating disorders are very destructive illnesses and you can almost feel that you are never sick enough. I think the competitive/comparing phenomenon is also rife in daily life with social media etc. It is easy to look sideways and to notice what others are doing/having and feeling a lack. You compare yourself and then you don’t feel good enough. In this episode, I dive into how to manage this. I explore ways to interrupt the competitive mindset and also to look deeper into what lies underneath. Often, envy and jealousy of others can indicate our own unmet needs and give an entry point to considering personal wants and desires. I hope that you find this helpful. Today is an old episode that I am sharing with you again. This episode is about binge eating - a behaviour that can be seen across all the eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and OSFED). I see a binge as an end point coping strategy, following a series of cumulative triggers, which are often out of awareness. The binge can offer relief, escape, numbing, fleeting euphoria and more. Of course, these impacts are short lasting and lead to detrimental impacts on mental and physical well-being. I talk about 5 ways to understand your binge eating better and how to begin to change this. I explore dietary restraint, physical and mental restriction, regular eating, self-soothing and self-care, body image, low mood and developing deeper awareness of your thoughts and feelings. This episode will support you in understanding and unpacking your binge eating, to empower you to take the first steps towards change. Brooke has worked for a nationwide eating disorder treatment centre for three years called The Emily Program. She was an outpatient therapist and partial hospitalisation program coordinator during that time, while also running a recovery support group. She previously talked about over-exercise and eating disorders in athletes. Also, she last talked about the relationship between social media and eating disorders. The links to those episodes are below if you want to listen. Today, Brooke is going to discuss how grief can be a function in eating disorders. She is going to name the different types of grief and the different types of losses you can experience; as grief is a type of trauma. She is going to explain how eating disorders are a form of coping and how a focus on food and body can be soothing or numbing from grief, or even a way to express pain from grief. Brooke explains how an eating disorder can even be a way to not feel as lonely or alone through your own grief She then goes on to talk about the different griefs we might notice in recovery. For example: - . The grief of accepting that you can't do treatment alone and need a community. . The grief of "pausing" on life (school, work, etc) to go to treatment to get your life back. . The grief of realising that your eating disorder doesn’t serve you anymore, even if it did at some point in the past' . The grief of life without the eating disorder. . The grief of your past self when maybe you have lost your authentic self to the ED. . The grief of losing your past body or your pre/post recovery body. I know you’re going to really enjoy this thought provoking episode, as Brooke really dives into the deeper issues and gives wholehearted permission to grieve along the healing road. | Help! How can I Support my Child to Develop a Healthy Relationship with Food? | 12 Apr 2023 | 00:23:16
A Bite Size episode. It can feel like an insurmountable task to ‘get it right’ with your child in helping them to develop a healthy body image and balanced eating habits. On the one hand, we hear daily scaremongering news of the dangers of your child becoming overweight or eating too much sugar. Simultaneously, we are also terrified of our child developing an eating disorder and becoming too thin or disordered eating habits. The culture and environment do not support our efforts, with tasty, processed food available in abundance, whilst we at the same time we continue to be bombarded by perfect social-media images. This discrepancy alone creates an unhelpful backdrop for trying to develop healthy attitudes towards body image and eating. In this episode, I explore some ways to support your child through all of this. I hope that you find it helpful

| How to Overcome People Pleasing with Psychotherapist, Emma Reed-Turrell | 08 Jun 2024 | 00:43:35 | |
Today, I’m re-releasing an old episode from 2021 when I spoke with Emma Reed Turrell – psychotherapist, author, speaker and podcaster. Emma grew up near Portsmouth and went on to read English at Queens’ College, Cambridge. Following ten years working in business, she returned to her earlier passion for psychology and retrained as a psychotherapist. Emma runs a thriving therapy practice alongside training and consulting. Emma guested on the podcast three years ago, to talk about her book 'Please Yourself', which was launched to the world in 2021. Since then, Emma and her best friend, Elizabeth Day had the podcast Best Friend Therapy, which has now ceased but there is a whole backlog of episodes if you want to go and listen. Emma is also launching her own podcast about Friendship and has also released another book called 'What Am I Missing?' in recent weeks. In this episode, Emma talks all about people pleasing. As a recovering people pleaser myself, and having worked with many people with eating disorders who struggle in this area, I was very keen to get Emma on the show. Emma talks about the 4 different types of pleaser that she has identified; gives tips and strategies for overcoming people pleasing; explores eating disorders and pleasing; dealing with social media and lots more. I hope that you enjoy this conversation. | Are You Constantly Craving Sugar? | 08 Mar 2023 | 00:23:38
Another Bite Size episode today! If you are constantly struggling with sugar cravings, then this one is for you. And it can be such a common phenomenon in eating disorder recovery. As a passionate Intuitive Eating advocate, I am certainly not anti-sugar by any means and I enjoy sugar consumption (to a degree!) daily. However, if you are feeling 'out of control' around sugar, this episode will give you some thoughts on how to change your relationship with this.
I hope that you enjoy it!
| A Deep Dive into ’All or Nothing Thinking’, with Amber Romaniuk (Emotional Eating, Digestive and Hormone Expert) | 04 Mar 2023 | 00:43:21 | |
Today I’m speaking to Amber Romaniuk who is a returning guest to the Eating Disorder Therapist Podcast. Amber is an Emotional Eating, Digestive and Hormone Expert who helps professional women achieve optimal health through mindful eating, self-care and overcoming self-sabotage with food. Her podcast “The No Sugarcoating Podcast” has a million downloads, over 300 episodes and is listened to, in over 88 countries. She was featured on TV Personality Whitney Port’s podcast and has also appeared on local TV 50 times in the last three years alone. Amber overcame her own emotional eating, after gaining and losing more than 1000 lbs and spending over $50,000 on binge foods and spending 5 years balancing her hormones and digestion. Now she helps others achieve Body Freedom™ so they have the confidence and health to create amazing lives. In this episode, Amber explores all or nothing approaches to food, life, work, relationships and more. Many of us can identify with an ‘all or nothing’ approach to life. Maybe you’re wondering about the impact of your genetics or environment and understanding why you’re an all or nothing person. Maybe you’re feeling that it’s impossible to change and you are resigned to live like this? Amber does a deep dive into this topic and gives a multitude of tips and wisdom on how to find a more balanced place of harmony and healing for everyone, drawing on her own lived experience and through many years of supporting her clients. I hope that you enjoy the conversation.

| About Atypical Anorexia Nervosa | 01 Mar 2023 | 00:11:05 | |
A Bite-Size episode talking about 'atypical anorexia nervosa'. If you are in a larger body, overweight or normal weight and restricting food heavily, you may have this diagnosis. In our diet-culture world, you may not even realise that you have an eating disorder, if you are not underweight. People who are underweight and then demonstrate ed behaviours often attract concern and worry from others. Whereas, if you are in a larger body, you will be praised for weight loss, even if your life is consumed with food 24/7 and you are struggling physically and mentally. If you recognise yourself here, do reach out for help. You are absolutely worthy of support. 85% of people with eating disorders are not underweight.
