Send us a text

In this replay of an episode from Season 2, Dr. Jaclyn Smeaton welcomes Dr. Christina O'Brien to the show to dive into cortisol and the HPA axis.

Sometimes a traditional diurnal cortisol test isn’t enough to properly evaluate a patient. With the DUTCH Plus, the cortisol awakening response (CAR) gives additional insight into your patient’s stress response. A “mini stress test” the CAR takes snapshots in the minutes and hours after waking to paint a clearer picture of HPA axis function.

In this episode, Christina O’Brien, DC, discusses the value of the CAR in finding hidden points of dysregulation in patients. She and Dr. Smeaton cover typical cortisol testing procedure and dive into the benefits of measuring the CAR to enhance patient care.

Estrogen Basics with Dr. Allison Smith17 Oct 202300:33:07

Send us a text

Estrogen might make some providers nervous, but estrogen refers to a group of hormones that are fundamentally important to health and well-being. Every cell type in the body has estrogen receptors, and understanding how estrogen is secreted and metabolized gives providers a lot of information about their patients’ health.

With host Jaclyn Smeaton, Dr. Allison Smith introduces us to the different forms of estrogen and sheds light on how understanding estrogen metabolism can offer valuable insights into how our tissues utilize this vital hormone. Dr. Smith explains why estrogen sometimes gets a bad rap and examines the factors contributing to this perception, including the role of environmental pollutants that mimic estrogen in the body. We learn about the importance of screening for and eliminating these xenoestrogens from our lives to promote better hormonal health.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and understanding what happens in the body when estrogen is metabolized is crucial to gaining valuable insights into cancer risk and prevention.

There are hormonal, dietary, and structural factors that contribute to breast pain and providers must investigate the root cause using a comprehensive approach. You can't just take a pill! Healing involves examining various components, including diet, genetics, family history, and lifestyle.

Join us for this eye-opening conversation with Dr. Lauren Young, ND, as we take a holistic and integrative approach to understanding and improving breast health!

Stress, Hormones, and Chronic Disease with Dr. Will Cole06 Dec 202200:32:28

Send us a text

Dr. Will Cole is the featured guest this week on the DUTCH Podcast and he and Jaclyn Smeaton, ND (DUTCH Chief Medical Officer) discuss chronic disease and its relationship to inflammation, stress, and hormone imbalances.

Many patients with chronic disease have some HPA axis dysregulation. And the whole endocrine system is affected by poor cortisol function. Chronic stress can lead to the overproduction of cortisol, which is probably why this hormone is often labeled as “bad”.

In reality, a cortisol increase can be seen as a marker for other issues in the body, such as chronic stress or illness. Dr. Cole and Dr. Smeaton discuss the Goldilocks principle of keeping cortisol levels “just right”.
