Episode 131: Phantasy Star Online Special26 Jun 202401:21:16

You are now dialled in to a brand new DreamPod special on the Dreamcast's ultimate multiplayer killer app: Phantasy Star Online, or - in Lozz's words - "the greatest f***ing game in the world. Period." Back in 2001, PSO broke new ground by bringing an online RPG experience to console, but did you know that you can still play PSO online on your Dreamcast in 2024?

Assembled in The Dreamcast Junkyard lobby this time round are Lozz, Mark (aka MazGamingUK), Brian and Harvey (aka Pizza Hotline) to talk all about what makes Phantasy Star Online's revolutionary console RPG goodness so darn special. They also recount their first memories of the game, think of questions they'd want to ask the game's developers if they had the chance, and take on Lozz's "Who Want to be a Mesetanaire" PSO quiz...

All musical interludes in this episode are songs from the Phantasy Star Online soundtrack.

Episode 3511 Jul 201600:52:34

Episode 35 of DreamPod is here and Tom, Mike, Caleb and Aaron convene once again to talk Dreamcast nonsense. Mike’s been playing Orion’s Puzzle Collection; Tom’s been playing Darius Burst on the Vita, Aaron’s been playing on his Sega Pico and Caleb has been hard at work trying to complete his custom arcade stick. This is a rather news-heavy episode and the team discuss topics including the recent Propeller Arena petition, Yuan Works’ Wind and Water: Puzzle Battles being re-released, early YouTubers smashing Dreamcasts, the Xbox prototype controllers shared on Twitter, Forbidden Planet’s new range of official Dreamcast merchandise and the new Kickstarter project Shadow Gangs. Elsewhere, Caleb does a pretty horrendous impression of an English comic book nerd and Tom confesses to wearing an Atari Jaguar-branded apron while doing the household chores. There are plenty of laughs to be had, so allow us to invite you to sit back with a nice cup of tea or a cold beer and enjoy episode 35 of DreamPod.

Episode 33: Elysian Shadows06 Jun 201601:05:28

Episode 33 of DreamPod is here, and once again it’s a total blockbuster! Regular hosts Tom and Ross are joined by Falco Girgis and Patryk Kowalik, the lead developer and lead artist from indie game developer Elysian Shadows Team. In this episode, no topics are left untouched as your hosts and guests discuss the development of one of the Dreamcast’s most hotly anticipated games - the Kickstarter-funded RPG Elysian Shadows. The pressures of running a Kickstarter, the former team members, those photos with Zoe Quinn, hair transplants, fungal infections, the internet hate campaigns and the real life stresses of running an indie development studio are all discussed with Falco and Patryk. More importantly, the groundbreaking nature of the Elysian Shadows Tool Kit (ESTK) and the power it will deliver to other indie developers; the brand new ElysianVMU visual memory emulator, and of course the game itself, are all explored in depth. Anything you ever wanted to know about the beginnings of Elysian Shadows - and indeed what the future holds - is discussed in episode 33 of DreamPod. You simply cannot afford to miss this one!

Episode 3224 May 201600:41:00

DreamPod 32 is here and Tom, Rob and Mike are here to guide you like leviathans of truth and justice through the latest breaking news developments from the world of Dreamcast! Rob’s been buying new Saturn games since his last appearance on the show and Mike reveals his unbridled love for all things Uncharted. Tom discusses how Super Magnetic Neo is actually incredibly cerebral despite the childish aesthetic, and the shenanigans at the recent Southampton Game Fest. Other topics covered include the Xenocider Kickstarter, ex-Manchester City striker Shaun Goater, West Country cider, the new unnamed FPS update from PH3NOM, Alice Dreams Tournament slipping to later in the year, and the recent Eurogamer article from former DC-UK editor Keith Stuart. DreamPod 32 is slightly shorter than some recent episodes, but it’s every bit as informative and filled with passion for Sega’s final console. Sit back, crack open an ice cold beer...and enjoy!

Episode 31: Shmup Pod11 May 201601:21:09

DreamPod 31: Where bullet heaven quickly becomes bullet hell! Yes, episode 31 is here and your regular hosts Tom, Ross, Mike, Caleb and Aaron are joined by a special guest host in the form of DreamcastHub.com’s Stephen Robinson to discuss a genre that is synonymous with the Dreamcast: shmups. Perhaps the most divisive of all the genres represented by the Dreamcast’s rich and varied library, your hosts take it upon themselves to discuss the very best, very worst and the most obscure games that make up the console’s glittering selection. Ross tries and fails to have a non-Dreamcast game included in the discussion, Aaron reveals some interesting Mars Matrix/Sonic Heroes trivia, Stephen waxes lyrical about The Lost Golem, Tom talks about the Atari Jaguar (again), Mike offends the entire PlayStation community by slagging off the Dual Shock 4, and Caleb treats us to his very best voiceover work. DreamPod episode 31 is here, and we’re ready to take you to a whole new dimension of podcasting awesomeness!

Episode 30: NAOMI Special30 Apr 201601:50:00

Episode 30 of DreamPod has landed, and it’s a NAOMI special! With Tom off on holiday (well, unpacking after his move), the Junkyard’s men in Japan and Australia - Ross and Scott respectively - take over the podcast and discuss the games they’ve been playing in the recent past, and there’s a special guest appearance from Ross’s squeaky chair. Ross moans about the state of gaming on the current gen systems and Scott briefly discusses Leona’s Tricky Adventures, but the main meat of episode 30 is all about Sega’s famous arcade system NAOMI. The guys reveal how they got involved with collecting for the system, the intricacies of the hardware, the games they love and the more obscure side of collecting arcade titles. This could be considered an extension of our ‘Expanding the Dreamcast Collection’ series and we hope you enjoy this in-depth look at the Dreamcast’s bigger brother. Oh, and listen out for the worst impressions of a Mancunian accent you're ever likely to hear!

Episode 2901 Apr 201600:45:48

Regular DreamPod hosts Tom and Mike sit down once again to discuss the latest news bursting forth from the Dreamcast community. Ross was also meant to be involved, but a slight technical glitch called ‘British Summer Time’ put paid to that (sorry Ross). Regardless, the intrepid duo plough on to bring you the lowdown on the recent charity event the Junkyard was involved with, and Mike explains why F1 World Grand Prix 2 still holds up in this age of HD graphics and up-to-date F1 rosters. The DreamPod has a world exclusive podcast performance of the recent Flappy Bird VMU port, and the Stone Age Gamer/USB-GDROM fiasco is discussed. Later, your hosts take a look at two newly announced Dreamcast indie games and then try to amicably decide whether Dead or Alive 2 is better looking than Soul Calibur. DreamPod 29 is running on a skeleton crew but the content is anything but threadbare. If you have even a passing interest in the latest news from the Dreamcast community…you should probably go and look at either the DC-Talk or DC Emulation forums. Otherwise, hit that download button!

Episode 2813 Mar 201600:56:59

The DreamPod returns for episode 28 and it’s back to business as usual. Tom, Caleb, Mike and Ross reconvene to discuss all the most pertinent issues from the world of Dreamcast, and get sidelined along the way (as usual). Tom speaks a little bit about Noiz2sa - a game that was released years ago but which he has only just discovered; while Ross enlightens the team on the wonders of Sega Hard Girls collectable figures. The VMU gets a good bit of attention as the new demos and prototype games from Instagram user guacasaurus_mex are discussed (along with some memories of VMU games of yore); and the upcoming shooter-cum-puzzler SLaVE gets another update in the form of an email to pre-orderers. Caleb waxes lyrical about the latest release of ScummVM and the trials and tribulations of creating his own adventure games, Mike claims Gloucestershire is posher than Somerset, the team talk a little bit about the recent RetroCollect Video Game Market, and there’s an impromptu appearance from everybody’s favourite ex-Governor and conspiracy theorist Jesse Ventura. Episode 28 of DreamPod has it all, so hit that download button and get on board!

Episode 2724 Feb 201600:32:47

Tom and Caleb convene once again to discuss some (mostly) Dreamcast-related topics. What's the best scrolling beat 'em up on the system? Who did the voice over work in Draconus Cult of the Wyrm? What is a Wyrm? These questions and more are tackled with fervent maniacal gusto, while elsewhere Caleb confesses to having never owned an Amiga or a Spectrum, and this leads on to the recent controversy surrounding the Coleco Chameleon and its alleged Nintendo-based innards. Tom waxes lyrical about PS Vita RPG Rainbow Moon and Caleb does a pretty good impression of George Takei. Ladies and gentlemen, we hope you enjoy this slightly shorter than usual episode of the world's best Dreamcast podcast called DreamPod!

Episode 2612 Feb 201601:04:27

Tom and Mike are joined by Ross, the newest member of the DCJY team. Ross hails from the UK but lives in Japan and so your hosts take the opportunity to discuss some slightly obscure corners of the Dreamcast library. CSK Holdings and their strange Dreamcast/health insurance console editions come up in conversation, as does Tom's obsession with ice hockey games. Mike reveals the additions to the updated Ultimate Collectors Guide, and Digitiser 2000's recent article on Sega's inability to recapture past glories is explored in more depth than is probably needed. Lines of chavs outside the local Job Centre, the levels of urban decay in Bristol and the sheer number of Sega arcade billboards cluttering the neon, rain-swept streets of Japan are all subjects tentatively touched upon. Oh, and there's some stuff about Vanishing Point and some Headhunter music. We hope you enjoy episode 26 of the world's greatest Dreamcast podcast.

Episode 24: DreamPi22 Jan 201600:56:09

Tom, Rob and Caleb are joined by creator of the DreamPi and Dreamcast Now! service, Luke Benstead. While the team are slightly sidetracked by the price of lesser-known PAL games, and Rob's recently acquired liquid cooled Dreamcast, the main meat of the episode is geared towards Luke's outstanding work getting the system back online without the need for a broadband adapter. With little more than a Raspberry Pi, Luke's bespoke DreamPi image and a dial-up modem, the Dreamcast can go back online and the Dreamcast Now! service lets you know which of your friends are also online. If you're a fan of online gaming, the Dreamcast, Linux and more turbo-geekery than you can shake a stick at, then episode 24 of DreamPod is for you!

Tom then goes on to talk about the recently updated DreamConn wireless controller - DreamConn V3; and the embryonic Dreamcast Deluxe project gets a mention too. 2015 was a great year for the Dreamcast in terms of software releases and your hosts deliberate which of the myriad new games was their favourite over the last 12 months. Christmas is here, so join the Dreamcast Junkyard DreamPod team for a festive knees up! Tom, Rob, Aaron and Caleb convene once again to get in amongst the nitty gritty, and are joined by a special guest in the form of a gate-crashing Santa Claus with an incontinent reindeer. Pier Solar also gets a small mention, while your hosts reveal which Dreamcast items they'd like for Christmas if money were no object. Elsewhere Rez on PS4 is discussed (along with the odd vibrating bodysuit), Caleb reveals a bizarre incident with a Virtual Boy that almost ripped his family apart, and Tom insults the entire city of Liverpool (again) with a stunningly bad scouse accent impression. Tom, Rob and Caleb get together once again to grind joyfully through the latest Dreamcast news.
