It's All-In August!

When life makes your situation seem impossible, you have to have a strategy ready. Here it is.

Self-brain surgery tip #4:

The more you think about something, the more easily it returns to your mind in the future. Synapses that fire together, wire together. This is why negative thinking is so harmful: it automates negativity in your brain. Change it to something positive!

A few thoughts on generational family issues, neuroscience, and the power of Jesus to break chains.

Look for God in the Story, with Tara-Leigh Cobble (Mind-Change Monday)22 Apr 202400:39:47

Tara-Leigh Cobble Changed Her Mind About God

It's Mind-Change Monday, and today's guest is the host of The Bible Recap Podcast. Tara-Leigh Cobble helps millions of people read, understand, and love the Word of God every day. But before she could do that, she had to change her mind. This is a perfect conversation for self-brain surgeons, because you can't change your life until you change your mind, and learning to love God's word is the first step to getting that done.

Check out The Bible Recap website!

Tara-Leigh is also a sought-after public speaker and teacher.

She also founded D-Group International, which exists to help people READ, UNDERSTAND, and LOVE the Bible, as they encounter God in a way that transforms their entire lives.

Darwin Has a Molecule Problem, with Dr. Michael Behe (Self-Brain Surgery Saturday)13 Apr 202401:00:08

It's Self-Brain Surgery Saturday!

We're all taught in school that Charles Darwin's theory of evolution explains how we got here. But the truth is, modern molecular biology continues to struggle to prove even the most basic elements of that idea. Survival of the fittest is an obvious truth, but survival does not explain arrival, and since Watson and Crick gave us the molecular structure of DNA in the 1950's, the picture has become more and more bleak for the Darwinists.

My guest today is Dr. Michael Behe. He is a biochemist from Lehigh University, and his incredible book is Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution.

From Amazon.com:

Naming Darwin's Black Box to the National Review's list of the 100 most important nonfiction works of the 20th century, George Gilder wrote that it "overthrows Darwin at the end of the 20th century in the same way that quantum theory overthrew Newton at the beginning".

Discussing the book in the New Yorker in May 2005, H. Allen Orr said of Behe, "He is the most prominent of the small circle of scientists working on intelligent design, and his arguments are by far the best known." From one end of the spectrum to the other, Darwin's Black Box has established itself as the key text in the Intelligent Design movement - the one argument that must be addressed in order to determine whether Darwinian evolution is sufficient to explain life as we know it, or not.

For this edition, Behe has written a major new Afterword tracing the state of the debate in the decade since it began. It is his first major new statement on the subject and will be welcomed by the thousands who wish to continue this intense debate.

Two Ways of Viewing Reality (Wildcard Wednesday)10 Apr 202400:35:25

It's Wildcard Wednesday!

This idea will help you understand how trauma and tragedy (or any massive thing) can become either A THING in your life, or THE defining issue of your whole life. Choose wisely.

Even if you're not depressed, many people are simply worn out and weary. Dr. Carreon's work will offer hope for weariness and those who long to live a life of flourishing as well.

This conversation covers a lot of ground- clinical psychiatry, the perils of depression and weariness, the role of medications, the devastation and risk factors for suicide, faith, the importance of community, and much more.

Dr. Carreon's Book: The Opposite of Depression: What My Work with Suicidal Patients Has Taught Me about Life, Hope, and How to Flourish by David Carreon, MD

There’s hope for greater satisfaction, purpose and joy in your life, even if circumstances have you down….
Stanford-trained psychiatrist David Carreon, MD, reveals what it takes to move from nagging disappointment, dissatisfaction, or depression to a life of thriving. One of the pioneers of the use of an intense form of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in severely depressed patients, Dr. Carreon was astonished by how quickly and dramatically most of them recovered. But he also saw very clearly that just eliminating the symptoms of depression wasn't enough. To live a truly fulfilling life, his patients needed to leave old habits behind and embrace the patterns of flourishing. In The Opposite of Depression, he draws on insights from his clinical experience, the latest research, and his Christian faith to point readers to principles and practices that promote thriving in mind, body and soul. Each chapter offers practical steps readers can take to start moving in the direction of greater satisfaction, fulfillment and purpose.

Don't Make an Operation Out of It (The Sixth Commandment of Self-Brain Surgery)03 Apr 202400:24:59

It's Wildcard Wednesday!

Today, a look at the sixth commandment of Self-Brain Surgery: I must stop making an operation out of everything.

Scripture: Isaiah 30:15

Article about Dr. Peter Jannetta

Book Mentioned:

The Ten Commandments of Self-Brain Surgery
I must relentlessly refuse to participate in my own demise.

I must believe that feelings are not facts, they are chemical events in my brain.

I must believe that most of my thoughts are untrue.

I must believe that my brain is designed to heal (Ryker’s Regular Legs)

I must love tomorrow more than I hate how I feel right now. (No Tomorrow Tax! Corollary: I must not treat bad feelings with bad operations.)

I must stop making an operation out of everything.

I must not perpetuate generational thought or behavioral issues in my family or start any new ones.

I must love my brain and live in such a way as to protect and improve it.

I must believe that what I’m doing I’m getting better at.

I must understand that thoughts become things.

Break Free from Self-Doubt with Leanne Ellington01 Apr 202400:42:16

It's Mind Change Monday, and Leanne Ellington is going to help us jump into Action April!

Leeanne Ellington has an incredible story of chasing healing through silence, and finding God in the process.

In her own words, she describes her faith journey:

Picture this: a skeptical, bacon-loving, Hebrew-speaking Jew, embarking on a quest to explore faith after a transformative 100-pound weight loss and a series of "quarter-life crisis".

It began with a whisper in my heart: "I think I might want God?!"

But not wanting to go back to the old days of temple and rabbi sermons, I found a non-denominational church in vibrant Nashville, TN that turned into a miraculous journey that filled a void in my spiritual landscape and met ME in my skepticism, doubt, and curiosity in all aspects of life.

All of a sudden this "God guy" that everyone ELSE was talking about that I had never met, and frankly never cared to meet…

...suddenly appeared to ME --and revealed, completed, and healed parts of my story I didn't even know needed attention.

Leanne has two incredible podcasts, What's God Got to Do With It? and Outweigh. She is an online coach and guide into applying neuroscience and faith to healing from body image and self-esteem issues, and we had an incredible talk.

You're going to love this one!

Some True Things (Mind Change Monday)11 Mar 202400:26:49

It's Mind Change Monday, and Here Are Some True Things You Need to Remember!

1. Your baseline is not your fault, but what you do next is
2. People are multidimensional, but your left hemisphere makes them 2-D
3. God is a quantum physics God
4. You are never stuck- your brain is literally changing its structure every second. All you have to do is decide to be purposeful about it.
5. The way our brains see the world is affected by many factors (culture, genetics, faith, experiences, many others), but that doesn't make it more or less correct, because feelings aren't facts (the second commandment)

Scripture: Jeremiah 23:23 "Am I a God who is only close at hand?” says the Lord.
“No, I am far away at the same time." NLT

Tina Tisdale is a Character in My New Book

She is a real person, with enough details changed to protect her family’s privacy. She had a problem that wouldn’t go away, and it forced her to make some decisions that were tragic.

From Tina’s story, we learn the critical importance of learning to accept the reality that God doesn’t always answer our prayers the way we think he should. It’s about faith and doubt, and acceptance.

There’s a little bit of Tina in all of us, but we can learn from her how to change our minds to become healthier, feel better, and be happier.

Some thoughts about what to do when you're stuck, and a story from my new book about how to see your life again after trauma or tragedy.

If all you can see is The Massive Thing that happened to you, you’ll never be able to see all the other things that are still beautiful. Here’s how to change that.

The Ten Commandments of Self-Brain Surgery (Mind Change Monday)04 Mar 202400:24:36

It's Mind Change Monday!

I've received many requests for a new presentation of The Ten Commandments of Self-Brain Surgery. So, here they are! As I write my next book, tentatively titled Self-Brain Surgery: How to Rewire Your Brain, Reorder Your Mind, and Radically Transform Your Life, these may change or reorder a little as I determine the best way to work them into a format that will fit nicely into book form. But here they are, which is a perfect way to start Mind Change March! These ten principles will help you become healthier, feel better, and be happier in your life.

The Ten Commandments of Self-Brain Surgery (Note: These have been modestly revised as my new book is taking shape; here is the list as it will appear in the book, although in this episode they are slightly different):

—I must relentlessly refuse to participate in my own demise.

—I must believe that feelings are not facts, they are chemical events in my brain.

—I must believe that most of my automatic thoughts are untrue.

—I must believe that my brain is designed to heal.

—I must love tomorrow more than I hate how I feel right now.

—I must stop making an operation out of everything.

—I must not perpetuate generational thought or behavioral issues in my family, or start any new ones.

—I must love my brain and live in such a way as to improve it.

—I must believe that I’m getting better at what I’m doing.

—I must understand that thoughts become things.

It's Wild Card Wednesday, and I Have the Flu.

This one gets deep into neurobiology and biochemistry, with some surprising answers! (Some new thoughts on attention, knowledge, and perspective, and a throwback look at gene expression and positivity).
