| The Ten Commandments of Self-Brain Surgery™ Part I (S12E2) | 08 Oct 2024 | 01:04:22 | |
In this episode, I introduce the first five of the Ten Commandments of self-brain surgery, which guide mental and emotional wellness. I emphasize the importance of rejecting self-destructive behaviors, understanding feelings as chemical events, questioning negative automatic thoughts, recognizing the brain's capacity for healing, and focusing on future possibilities over immediate discomfort. Practical applications are provided to encourage self-reflection and conscious thought alterations. The next episode will explore the remaining five commandments, continuing the journey toward personal fulfillment.

Today’s dose of hope is learning what to do when your trauma, tragedy, or other massive thing has filled your head and heart with harmful thoughts, especially when the harmful thought is based on something true.

| When to Build the Boat (Wildcard Wednesday) | 24 Apr 2024 | 00:38:13 | |
When did Noah build the arc?
Before it started raining.
Look, storms happen in life. Hard times come, but when things get hard, strong people get busy. And when great opportunities come, we need to be ready.
Let’s pick up the hammer and start building that ark. Because the rain is coming. Because something great is coming, and we need to be ready. Something hard is coming, and we need to get our feet on more solid ground, even if we have to build a boat to get there.

| Darwin Has a Molecule Problem, with Dr. Michael Behe (Self-Brain Surgery Saturday) | 13 Apr 2024 | 01:00:37 | |
It's Self-Brain Surgery Saturday! We're all taught in school that Charles Darwin's theory of evolution explains how we got here. But the truth is, modern molecular biology continues to struggle to prove even the most basic elements of that idea. Survival of the fittest is an obvious truth, but survival does not explain arrival, and since Watson and Crick gave us the molecular structure of DNA in the 1950's, the picture has become more and more bleak for the Darwinists.
My guest today is Dr. Michael Behe. He is a biochemist from Lehigh University, and his incredible book is Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution. From Amazon.com:
Naming Darwin's Black Box to the National Review's list of the 100 most important nonfiction works of the 20th century, George Gilder wrote that it "overthrows Darwin at the end of the 20th century in the same way that quantum theory overthrew Newton at the beginning".Discussing the book in the New Yorker in May 2005, H. Allen Orr said of Behe, "He is the most prominent of the small circle of scientists working on intelligent design, and his arguments are by far the best known." From one end of the spectrum to the other, Darwin's Black Box has established itself as the key text in the Intelligent Design movement - the one argument that must be addressed in order to determine whether Darwinian evolution is sufficient to explain life as we know it, or not.
For this edition, Behe has written a major new Afterword tracing the state of the debate in the decade since it began. It is his first major new statement on the subject and will be welcomed by the thousands who wish to continue this intense debate.

| The Opposite of Depression, with Dr. David Carreon | 09 Apr 2024 | 00:48:47 | |
The Opposite of Depression Is Not Just Feeling Better, It's Leaning to Live Better
Dr. David Carreon is a psychiatrist and expert on helping people with depression learn not just to feel better, but to actually learn to live fulfilling lives. And what he's learned will help all of us become healthier, feel better, and be happier in our lives.
Even if you're not depressed, many people are simply worn out and weary. Dr. Carreon's work will offer hope for weariness and those who long to live a life of flourishing as well.
This conversation covers a lot of ground- clinical psychiatry, the perils of depression and weariness, the role of medications, the devastation and risk factors for suicide, faith, the importance of community, and much more.
Dr. Carreon's Book: The Opposite of Depression: What My Work with Suicidal Patients Has Taught Me about Life, Hope, and How to Flourish by David Carreon, MD
Learn more about Dr. Carreon and his work with transcranial magnetic stimulation here.
Book Preview from Tyndale.comThere’s hope for greater satisfaction, purpose and joy in your life, even if circumstances have you down….Stanford-trained psychiatrist David Carreon, MD, reveals what it takes to move from nagging disappointment, dissatisfaction, or depression to a life of thriving. One of the pioneers of the use of an intense form of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in severely depressed patients, Dr. Carreon was astonished by how quickly and dramatically most of them recovered. But he also saw very clearly that just eliminating the symptoms of depression wasn't enough. To live a truly fulfilling life, his patients needed to leave old habits behind and embrace the patterns of flourishing. In The Opposite of Depression, he draws on insights from his clinical experience, the latest research, and his Christian faith to point readers to principles and practices that promote thriving in mind, body and soul. Each chapter offers practical steps readers can take to start moving in the direction of greater satisfaction, fulfillment and purpose.Leave a voicemail with your question or comment!

| Break Free from Self-Doubt with Leanne Ellington | 01 Apr 2024 | 00:42:45 | |
It's Mind Change Monday, and Leanne Ellington is going to help us jump into Action April!Leeanne Ellington has an incredible story of chasing healing through silence, and finding God in the process.
In her own words, she describes her faith journey:
Picture this: a skeptical, bacon-loving, Hebrew-speaking Jew, embarking on a quest to explore faith after a transformative 100-pound weight loss and a series of "quarter-life crisis".It began with a whisper in my heart: "I think I might want God?!"
But not wanting to go back to the old days of temple and rabbi sermons, I found a non-denominational church in vibrant Nashville, TN that turned into a miraculous journey that filled a void in my spiritual landscape and met ME in my skepticism, doubt, and curiosity in all aspects of life.
All of a sudden this "God guy" that everyone ELSE was talking about that I had never met, and frankly never cared to meet…
...suddenly appeared to ME --and revealed, completed, and healed parts of my story I didn't even know needed attention.
Leanne has two incredible podcasts, What's God Got to Do With It? and Outweigh. She is an online coach and guide into applying neuroscience and faith to healing from body image and self-esteem issues, and we had an incredible talk.
You're going to love this one!

| Some True Things (Mind Change Monday) | 11 Mar 2024 | 00:27:18 | |
It's Mind Change Monday, and Here Are Some True Things You Need to Remember!1. Your baseline is not your fault, but what you do next is2. People are multidimensional, but your left hemisphere makes them 2-D3. God is a quantum physics God4. You are never stuck- your brain is literally changing its structure every second. All you have to do is decide to be purposeful about it. 5. The way our brains see the world is affected by many factors (culture, genetics, faith, experiences, many others), but that doesn't make it more or less correct, because feelings aren't facts (the second commandment)
Scripture: Jeremiah 23:23 "Am I a God who is only close at hand?” says the Lord.“No, I am far away at the same time." NLT

| First No Harm (The First Commandment of Self-Brain Surgery) | 08 Mar 2024 | 00:21:24 | |
It's Frontal Lobe Friday!Today, the first in a series of looking at each of the Ten Commandments of Self-Brain Surgery in more detail. The first commandment, just like in medical school, is primum non nocere, First No Harm. Self-Brain Surgeons say it like this: "I will relentlessly refuse to participate in my own demise."
Scripture: Mark 12:30-31, Romans 12:1-2, Psalm 19:14
The Ten Commandments of Self-Brain Surgery (Updated 3/8/2024; corollaries coming soon) 1. I must relentlessly refuse to participate in my own demise.
2. I must recognize that feelings are not facts, they are chemical events in my brain.
3. I must recognize that most of my thoughts are untrue.
4. I must love tomorrow more than I hate how I feel right now.
5. I must not treat bad feelings with bad operations.
6. I must stop making an operation out of everything.
7. I must not perpetuate generational thought or behavioral issues in my family or start any new ones.
8. I must love my brain and live in such a way as to improve it.
9. I must believe that what I’m doing I’m getting better at.
10. I must understand that thoughts become things.

Trauma Rounds: Stuck
Tina Tisdale is a Character in My New Book
She is a real person, with enough details changed to protect her family’s privacy. She had a problem that wouldn’t go away, and it forced her to make some decisions that were tragic.
From Tina’s story, we learn the critical importance of learning to accept the reality that God doesn’t always answer our prayers the way we think he should. It’s about faith and doubt, and acceptance.
There’s a little bit of Tina in all of us, but we can learn from her how to change our minds to become healthier, feel better, and be happier.
Scripture: II Corinthians 12:7
