It's ok not to be ok!01 Jul 202400:28:30

In this podcast I talk about the 100% happiness fallacy, and why learning how how to embrace your pain and rewrite your story is an important part of being truly happy. This is a replay of a Neurolive webinar I did on my app. For the full webinar AD-free, please see Neurocycle.app or look for Neurocycle on the App Store or Google Play.

Does it feel to you like you must be happy all the time? Often, it feels like happiness and being positive is touted as the wonder drug to solve our problems. It is easy to feel like there is something wrong with you if you are not as happy as other people seem to be! Yes, being happy and optimistic ways can have a positive impact on our mind, brain and body, but thinking happy thoughts doesn't just eliminate whatever we are going through.

SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk about the importance of teaching your child about boundaries. This is part 1 of a 2-part series on parenting, boundaries, and mental health.

From the moment children are born, they are tied to their environment and the people within their environment. They are born into a community which they both shape and are shaped by.

A child’s identity is closely tied to their community – their family, friends, and other acquaintances. Children develop a sense of who they are in relation to who they are with. This has both a huge potential for growth and connection and a huge potential for harm, which is why teaching your child how to have healthy relationships from a young age is so important for their mental and physical wellbeing.

SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk to Alicia, a concerned mother, about helping sensitive children manage their emotions. This is part of a series I am doing on questions you submitted for my new book on children’s mental health.

This was Alicia’s question:

“How do I help a sensitive seven-year-old move on after they make a mistake? I have a very sensitive seven year old girl. She likes to follow the rules. However, she does from time to time need some course correction. When I do so, she instantly withdraws, and becomes very quiet and sad, often for a long amount of time. I have a hunch that she’s beating herself up about whatever mistake she made, and I would love some help figuring out how to help her receive correction without being so hard on herself.”

SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk about embracing “messy” parenting. This is part 2 of my series on parenting. You can listen to part 1 here.  As I mentioned in part 1, it’s ok to be a “messy” parent. We need to normalize, not stigmatize, messy parenting. This means embracing our feelings and mistakes and learning from them, using them to grow and learn as parents. It means using our own struggles to help our children understand how to manage the “messiness” and challenges of life through example and open communication. Indeed, one of the best ways we can teach our children how to manage their mental health is by modeling how we deal with life’s difficulties, including how we parent them and how we embrace, process and manage our own mistakes.

Confronting the “good girl” trap with Elise Loehnen27 Jun 202400:55:51

In this podcast I talk to bestselling author and podcast host Elise Loehnen about being a woman in today’s world, the price we as women pay to be “good” and “on our best behavior”, how this impacts our mental wellbeing, and so much more!

Elise is also the author of the New York Times bestseller On Our Best Behavior: The Seven Deadly Sins and the Price Women Pay to Be Good. This incredible book “weaves together history, memoir, and cultural criticism to explore the ways patriarchy lands in the bodies of women and embeds itself in our consciousness—and what we then police in ourselves and in each other”.  It is about the way we as women are programmed by culture and society to adhere to certain ideas about “goodness”. in many ways, women, from young are programmed to be on their best behavior, while men are programmed to be powerful, which affects all parts of a woman’s life.

SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk to Oyindamola, a concerned parent, about her preschooler’s emotional reactions and how to help him manage how he feels in the moment. This is part of a series I am doing on questions you submitted for my new book on children’s mental health.

This was Oyindamola’s question:

“Why does my preschooler (4 years and 5 months) tend to cry at a range of issues which seem understandable e.g. stubbing his toe or spilling a meal to others less so such as, his nanny leaving before he could say bye, water touching his face during a shower (despite the fact this is part of the process every morning)? It could be said that these examples have in common a perceived lack of agency but they seem to vary in magnitude quite a lot. We try various things: listening to the issue in his own words, asking him to take deep breaths, acknowledging his feelings, and asking him to proffer solutions but sometimes it just doesn't seem to work.”

SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk about something great you can do with your children this summer: getting outside! This is part of my summer series on brain-building activities you can do with your children to help them build up their mental resilience and manage their mental health while having fun.

We all know that getting outside is great for our mental wellbeing. Just think of how you feel when you go for a walk in the sunshine or spend time reading at the beach. Nature has a way of calming us down mentally and physically.

The same is true for our children. Playing outside is one of the best things they can do to boost their mental and physical wellbeing. This may seem obvious, but consider that the average American child spends 4-7 minutes a day in unstructured play outdoors and over 7 hours in front of a screen. This is a cause for concern, as research shows that that children should play outside for around 2-3 hours, or at minimum 20 minutes, a day for optimal mental and physical development. As much as modern technology has improved our lives, it should not replace the act of enjoying the outdoors and what nature has to offer.

SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk to parent Hannah Baldwin about teaching her children mind management techniques. This is part of a series I am doing on questions you submitted for my new book on children’s mental health.

This was Hannah’s question: “My kids are 12, 10, and 8. I personally have been through extensive brain rewiring and parent accordingly to help my kids overcome toxic thought loops. However my 8 year old loops more often than not and is incredibly spiritually sensitive and is very empathic. I really believe her migraines are stress induced as they almost always follow a tough day at school, being bullied, or when she has had a day of high and happy emotions. While I try to implement as many calming and mind-management strategies as possible, I find myself completely exhausted and burned out as a result of trying to do the deeper mental work with her to help her stay mentally healthy and build resilience to and through tough emotional days. How do I help an empathic 8 year old navigate incredibly intense emotions from a vantage point of giving her tools to use that will help her mental health thrive long term?”.

Screen time is not as bad as we think24 Jun 202400:21:33

In this podcast I talk about screen time, sleep and what the research really tells us about technology use before bed. This is a replay of a Neurolive webinar I did on my app. For the full webinar AD-free, please see Neurocycle.app look for Neurocycle on the App Store or Google Play.

As technology advances, our sleep duration decreases. Or, so we have been told. But, are these two phenomena directly connected? And does this apply to all age groups? When it comes to our circadian rhythm, is screen time always a bad thing?

Podcast 482: Can we be too self-aware?15 May 202300:26:33

Download my new and improved brain detox app here: https://neurocycle.app

SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk about self-awareness, why it is helpful, and what happens when we become too self-aware.  As you have heard me say many times on this podcast, we need to self-regulate what we think, say and do. This is key to living a life of mind management and learning how to deal with the many ups and downs of life. However, it is possible to be too self-aware. This happens when we start trying to intellectualize away our feelings and emotions rather than learning from them. We have to feel so we can heal—trying to rationalize away how we experience life can be as harmful as suppressing or ignoring uncomfortable emotions.

Download my new and improved brain detox app here: https://neurocycle.app

SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk about relationships, communication, sex, and the mind. This is part 1 of a 3-part series. High-quality intimate relationships are good for our health—we all know this! But did you know that sexual intimacy is also good for us? I recently interviewed Dr. Elissa Epel about her work with telomeres and stress, and she mentioned that one of her most interesting and popular studies, published in 2017, was on a correlation she and her team found between longevity and safe and consensual sex. In this study, Dr. Epel and her team observed that couples that are more sexually intimate have longer telomeres, which contribute to our cellular health and longevity.

Download my new and improved brain detox app here: https://neurocycle.app

SHOW DESCRIPTION: In today’s podcast I talk about dealing with draining people while protecting your mental health. Relationships are great and have many benefits, but they can also be challenging, especially when you have to deal with someone who is a drain on your mental energy and resources. Indeed, sometimes the most draining people can be family, friends, co-workers, and even children! It's okay to admit to yourself that you feel drained around someone. You don't have to add guilt to the mental and emotional strain you are already feeling, as this will only make you feel worse. But, once you recognize and honor your feelings, you also need to take steps to help manage the situation so that you can protect your mental health and relationships. We need to acknowledge how we feel to manage how we feel.

Podcast 466: How forgiveness changes your brain20 Mar 202300:21:32

Download my new and improved brain detox app here: https://neurocycle.app

SHOW DESCRIPTION: In this podcast I talk about forgiveness and the mind. Forgiveness is more than just a word or action. It is something that that affects us mentally, emotionally and spiritually. It helps us heal n ways we are only just beginning to understand. This is due to the law of entanglement in quantum physics, which keeps everything in a relationship—toxic or otherwise—entangled, affecting each component. Forgiveness helps us sever the toxic hold someone who hurt us has over us. It helps us disconnect from the source of our pain and find true healing.
