| Why is black wealth dropping? | 09 juil. 2026 | 01:05:00 | |
In this powerful episode, Dr. Boyce Watkins breaks down the cultural forces driving the decline of Black wealth toward zero. He exposes how modern influences—especially hip‑hop culture—have shifted from empowerment to economic self‑sabotage. What began as a voice for liberation has, in many cases, become a marketing engine for consumerism, debt, and short‑term gratification. Dr. Watkins explains how lyrics glorifying reckless spending, luxury brands, and fast money have replaced messages of ownership, discipline, and generational wealth. These cultural cues shape financial behavior, teaching young people to chase status instead of assets. He connects the dots between media programming, corporate exploitation, and the erosion of long‑term economic stability in Black communities. This video challenges viewers to look beyond entertainment and recognize how culture becomes economics. It’s not just about music—it’s about mindset. Dr. Watkins calls for a return to the principles of wealth creation rooted in education, entrepreneurship, and collective responsibility. Through historical context and modern analysis, he reveals how reclaiming cultural integrity is essential to rebuilding Black financial power. Dr. Boyce Watkins is a Finance PhD, founder of The Black Business School—which serves over 300,000 students worldwide—and will join the faculty at Morehouse College this fall. He continues to teach practical strategies for wealth and ownership to audiences across the globe. Learn more at BoyceWatkins.com. | |||

| Why buying black is a necessity - Dr Boyce Watkins | 05 juil. 2026 | 01:12:16 | |
Buying Black is not charity. It is an economic strategy. Every time we spend money, we are casting a vote for the businesses, families, and communities we want to survive. When Black dollars immediately leave our community, they create jobs, ownership, and wealth somewhere else. But when we intentionally support Black-owned businesses, we give those entrepreneurs the revenue they need to hire employees, expand operations, purchase property, and invest in the next generation. A strong community must have more than talented workers. It must have owners. Ownership gives us control over jobs, products, technology, land, education, media, and the stories told about our people. When we do not own the businesses serving our community, we remain economically dependent on institutions that may not prioritize our interests. Buying Black also helps build family wealth. A successful Black business can pay for a child’s education, provide employment for relatives, become an inheritance, and create opportunities that last for generations. One purchase may seem small, but millions of intentional purchases can transform entire neighborhoods. This does not mean supporting poor service or low-quality products. Black businesses must compete, improve, and treat customers well. But we should give strong Black-owned companies a fair opportunity to earn our loyalty instead of automatically assuming that bigger corporations are better. We cannot demand economic power while refusing to practice economic discipline. Marching can raise awareness. Voting can influence policy. But spending, investing, producing, and owning determine who controls the economy. The Black community has enormous purchasing power. The question is whether we will use that power to build institutions we own or continue using it to make everyone else wealthy. Dr. Watkins, a finance PhD and leading voice in Black economic empowerment, breaks down how record labels profit from dysfunction while Black families pay the price. He connects the dots between lyrical content and financial behavior—showing how glorifying fast money and reckless living undermines long‑term ownership, investment, and generational wealth. This video challenges viewers to rethink what “success” looks like in hip hop and to reclaim the narrative of Black excellence through entrepreneurship, education, and disciplined wealth‑building. It’s not about silencing art—it’s about understanding the cost of toxic messaging and demanding better for our children and communities.
